Let’s start by seeing different ways to  make and accept suggestions in English.

Let’s listen to two friends talking  together.

두 친구가 함께 이야기하는 것을 들어 봅시다 .

As you listen, think about two questions.

들으면서 두 가지 질문에 대해 생각해 보세요.

One: what language is used to make suggestions? Two: what language is used to accept suggestions? 

하나: 제안에 사용되는 언어는 무엇입니까? 둘째: 제안을 수락하는 데 사용되는 언어는 무엇입니까?

Ready? Let’s listen to the dialogue.

It’s a lovely day. Why don’t we go out somewhere? Sure. Why not?

How about going for a walk? Maybe along the river? Sounds great.

Shall we stop somewhere for some lunch? That’s a good idea.

Let’s try that new restaurant by the park. Great. I’m in!

공원 옆에 새로 생긴 식당에 가 봅시다. 엄청난. 나는 ~ 안에있다! 제안을 하고 수락하는

Could you hear all the different ways to make  and accept suggestions? Let’s look together. 

다양한 방법을 들을 수 있나요 ? 함께 살펴봅시다.

One of these phrases has a different structure  to the other three. Do you know which one? 

이 문구 중 하나는 나머지 세 개와 구조가 다릅니다. 어느 것을 아십니까?

‘How about’ is different, because  you use it with a verb plus -ing.  

'How about'은 동사 더하기 -ing와 함께 사용하기 때문에 다릅니다.

The other three are all followed by infinitive verbs, without 'to'.

나머지 세 개는 모두 뒤에 'to'가 없는 부정사 동사가 옵니다.

course, there are many possible  answers! Here are some examples.

It’s a beautiful day. Let’s go to the beach. I’m hungry. How about going out for a pizza?

I’m free this morning. Why  don’t we go to the market?

There’s a movie on channel 4. Shall we watch it?

Were your suggestions the same as mine?

Now, let’s see phases you can use to  accept a suggestion. In the dialogue, you heard:

이제 제안을 수락하는 데 사용할 수 있는 단계를 살펴보겠습니다 . 대화에서 다음을 들었습니다.

There are many other phrases you could use.  

사용할 수 있는 다른 많은 문구가 있습니다.

You could just say something simple  like ‘yeah’ or ‘yeah, why not?’ 

그냥 '그래' 또는 '그래, 왜 안 돼?'와 같이 간단하게 말할 수 있습니다.

If you want to sound a little less  casual, you could say something like  

좀 덜 캐주얼하게 들리고 싶다면 '

‘I would like that’ or ‘That  sounds like a good idea.’ 

I would like that' 또는 '그건 좋은 생각이군요'와 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

But, what if you don’t want to do what the  other person is suggesting? Let’s look.

하지만 , 상대방이 제안하는 대로 하기 싫다면 ? 한번 보자.

Sometimes, even though it’s a bit difficult,  you’ve got to reject a suggestion have to

say ‘no’ to people.

In this case, it’s important to be  polite, even if you’re talking to a friend.

Let’s see a dialogue which shows you how *not*  to do this. Listen and try to find the problems.

You *could* use phrases like this  to reject someone else’s suggestion… 

이와 같은 문구를 *사용*할 수 있지만 ...

but it doesn’t sound polite.

공손하게 들리지 않습니다.

So,  how could we improve them? Listen  again and see the difference.

그렇다면 어떻게 개선할 수 있을까요? 다시 듣고 차이점을 확인하세요.

It’s a beautiful day. Shall we go out somewhere? I’d rather not, if you don’t mind.

Oh, come on! Why don’t we go  for a walk along the river?

I don’t really feel like it, I’m afraid. Well, let’s go somewhere for some lunch.

Did you hear the four polite phrases  you can use to say ‘no’ to a suggestion?

These are polite ways to reject a suggestion.

이것은 제안을 거절하는 공손한 방법입니다.

The phrase – ‘can I take a rain check?’  – means that you want to do something, but  

'Can I take a rain check?' 라는 문구는 당신이 무언가를 하고 싶지만

not right now. You’ll do it another time.

지금 당장은 아니라는 것을 의미합니다. 다른 시간에 할 것입니다.

It’s a lovely day. Why don’t we go shopping? 

멋진 날입니다. 쇼핑하러 가지 않을래?

Maybe another time. I’ve got a lot to do today. How about going for a walk? Maybe along the river?

I don’t really feel like it,  I’m afraid. I’m a bit tired.

Well, let’s go somewhere for lunch. I’d rather not, if you don’t mind.

When you say  

‘no’ to someone’s suggestion, you can  sound more polite by adding a reason.  

누군가의 제안에 '아니오'라고 말할 때 이유를 추가하면 더 정중하게 들릴 수 있습니다. 대화에서 들은

Can you remember the reasons  you heard in the dialogue?

Like we did before, I’m going to make  some suggestions. After you hear each suggestion,

are some possible reasons you could use.

사용할 수 있는 몇 가지 이유는 다음과 같습니다.

Were any of your reasons the same as mine?

If not, don’t worry! There are  many possible answers here.

Now, you should know different ways to make,  accept and reject suggestions politely in English.

이제 영어로 정중하게 제안을 하고 수락하고 거절하는 다양한 방법을 알아야 합니다.

Are we done? Not yet! There’s  one more important point.

When you’re accepting a suggestion,

intonation is critical. Even if  you use correct, polite language,  

억양이 중요합니다. 정확하고 정중한 언어를 사용하더라도 억양이 올바르지 않으면

you can still sound unfriendly  if your intonation is not right.

여전히 불친절하게 들릴 수 있습니다 .

Compare two answers. Shall we go shopping?

That’s a good idea. That’s a good idea!

Can you hear it? The same words can  have a completely different meaning

When you’re accepting rejecting a  suggestion, try to sound a little apologetic.

거부할 때 약간 사과하는 듯한 말을 해보세요.

Now, I’m going to reject a suggestion  twice, using different intonation. Listen;  

이제 다른 억양을 사용하여 제안을 두 번 거부하겠습니다. 듣다;

which answer has the correct,  apologetic intonation?

올바른 사과 억양이 있는 답변은 무엇인가요 ?

I can’t, I’m afraid. I’ve got some work to do.

I can’t, I’m afraid. I’ve got some work to do. Could you hear? Which one sounded more polite?

못해요. 할 일이 좀 있어요. 들리나요? 어느 쪽이 더 정중하게 들렸습니까?

The first answer had polite intonation. The  second one didn’t, and could sound unfriendly.

첫 번째 대답은 공손한 억양이었습니다. 두 번째는 그렇지 않았고 비우호적으로 들릴 수 있습니다.

Now it’s your turn to practise. 

이제 당신이 연습할 차례입니다.

You’ll hear four suggestions. After each one,

either accept it, or reject it.  Focus on using polite intonation.

easy to judge your own intonation, so you might  want to ask someone else if you sound natural.

자신의 억양을 판단하는 것이 항상 쉬운 것은 아니므로 다른 사람에게 물어보고 싶을 수도 있습니다.

Although polite intonation is important, you  don’t want to overdo it. It will sound weird.

공손한 억양이 중요하지만 과도 하게 사용해서는 안 됩니다. 이상하게 들릴 것입니다.
