We're going to start by talking about one of the main questions that you're asked in
1
12000
4680
00:16
a business context, and that is, "Where do you work?"
2
16680
4120
00:20
OK?
3
20800
1000
00:21
There are a number of different ways in which you can answer this question, and they all
4
21800
4560
00:26
involve the word "work," of course.
5
26360
3200
00:29
So for example, you would start by saying, "I work," but after that, you have a number
6
29560
5720
00:35
of different prepositions that you need to use depending on what you want to say.
7
35280
6520
00:41
So we're going to review some of these, and then I hope you'll have a better understanding
8
41800
4940
00:46
of what to use and how to answer this basic question.
9
46740
4260
00:51
OK?
10
51000
1000
00:52
So let's get started.
11
52000
1560
00:53
So the first one is, "I work in."
12
53560
4160
00:57
"I work in" can be used for a place.
13
57720
4520
01:02
For example, "I work in a school," "I work in an office," "I work in a factory," right?
14
62240
8600
01:10
There are many other examples like that.
15
70840
2760
01:13
You can also use "in" to describe the city.
16
73600
4240
01:17
"I work in Toronto," "I work in Paris," "I work in Montreal."
17
77840
7240
01:25
OK?
18
85080
1260
01:26
So you can use it for cities.
19
86340
2340
01:28
You can also use it for the country.
20
88680
2040
01:30
"I work in Australia," "I work in Japan," "I work in India," OK?
21
90720
7040
01:37
Another way you can use "I work in" is with the department.
22
97760
4320
01:42
"I work in the marketing department," "I work in the accounting department," OK?
23
102080
6760
01:48
You can also use it to describe the field that you're in.
24
108840
4080
01:52
For example, "I work in computers," "I work in education," right?
25
112920
6960
01:59
So you're using it to describe the field that you're in, the professional field.
26
119880
5320
02:05
Or "I work in accounting," for example.
27
125200
3360
02:08
Or you can use it similarly to describe the industry.
28
128560
3760
02:12
"I work in the hospitality industry," "I work in the tourism industry," OK?
29
132320
7600
02:19
So yes, the preposition "in" covers a lot of different possibilities, OK?
30
139920
7020
02:26
Let's move on from there to the next one, which is "on."
31
146940
4580
02:31
So let's look at how we can use that.
32
151520
2800
02:34
"I work on a farm," "I work on an oil rig," "I work on a construction site."
33
154320
9600
02:43
These are some specific examples.
34
163920
2480
02:46
You can see that they are a little more specific.
35
166400
3080
02:49
It's used not as often, OK, it's used more rarely, so "in" is more common.
36
169480
8060
02:57
You can also use it to talk about the area or field that you're working on.
37
177540
5260
03:02
So for example, "I work on software development," "I work on educational policy," OK?
38
182800
8080
03:10
That's another way you can use "on."
39
190880
2800
03:13
Now "at" describes a place, and you might be wondering because I mentioned "place"
40
193680
7160
03:20
so far in three different places, but here it's a little more specific.
41
200840
5600
03:26
For example, "I work at home," "I work at the downtown branch," right?
42
206440
7880
03:34
"I work at this location."
43
214320
3000
03:37
So you're usually talking about a more specific place or branch or location, alright?
44
217320
8040
03:45
Now we come to another one, "with."
45
225360
3120
03:48
So "with" is used to talk about who you work with, right?
46
228480
4960
03:53
"I work with John," "I work with the French clients," "I work with several wonderful
47
233440
8400
04:01
colleagues," right?
48
241840
1000
04:02
You're talking about the people that you're working with.
49
242840
4760
04:07
And last of all, but perhaps most important, because this is what people may ask you first,
50
247600
6960
04:14
right?
51
254560
1000
04:15
They might ask you, "Who do you work for?"
52
255560
3080
04:18
So in answer to that question, you could say, "I work for Diplomat Language School,"
53
258640
6120
04:24
"I work for Microsoft," "I work for IBM," and so on.
54
264760
6760
04:31
Or you could say, "I work for my uncle," alright?
55
271520
4160
04:35
It could be a person as well, but usually we're going to give the name of a company.
56
275680
6040
04:41
And in case you're a self-employee or you're an entrepreneur, you can also say, "I work
57
281720
4960
04:46
for myself," okay?
58
286680
2680
04:49
So I know there's a lot of different possibilities here.
59
289360
4200
04:53
I know that prepositions can be quite challenging to master, so the only way to really learn
60
293560
6280
04:59
them is to listen to a lot of examples, to write out a lot of examples of your own using
61
299840
6960
05:06
these prepositions, and through repetition, eventually you will get them, okay?
62
306800
6360
05:13

05:25

65
325200
2000
05:27
Bye for now.
