So today, I'm gonna teach you

some very useful business English vocabulary

that you can start using right now.

So let's imagine

you are working on a big project

for some very important clients

from the amazing company of Suntory,

the makers of this delicious drink.

Your big presentation for the most amazing clients

it's coming up soon.

Our first phrasal verb.

To come up,

it has a few different meanings,

but in this context,

it means an event or a special date is happening soon.

Like, "Hey, your birthday's coming up soon, right?"

"Yeah, next week."

And the deadline for this presentation

is coming up very soon.

The deadline is tomorrow.

The deadline is when a piece of work

or maybe an application form

must be finished and submitted.

Does deadline translate to your language?

Do you say it exactly translated

or do you have a different word?

And you could also say the presentation is due tomorrow.

To be due,

it means it's expected at this time, this date.

Your boss expects your presentation tomorrow.

It's due tomorrow.

Pronunciation, yes, you could pronounce this like due.

It's due tomorrow.

But that sounds very, very posh and kind of weird.

Not many people pronounce it like that.

Usually people say,

"Oh, this presentation is due tomorrow," due.

So do you have any work that's due soon?

Any deadlines coming up?

Anyway, if you are like me,

you've been putting this off for weeks.

Oh, to put something off means, yeah,

I have to do this work,

but eh, I'll do it later.

You're putting it off.

Usually I put things off to the last minute,

like the day before it's due.

So you need more time to work on this presentation,

so you go to your boss and ask,

"Hey, Mr. Boss,

"can we push back the presentation a couple of hours?"

To push something back,

it means to postpone an event,

make it later.

In this case, give yourself more time.

But your boss isn't happy.

In fact, you face some pushback for this idea.

If you put the word pushback together to one word,

this is a noun.

And it means a negative reaction to something.

To face pushback, get pushback,

receive pushback for an idea or a plan, for example.

This expression is quite formal and businessy

so maybe don't use this with friends,

it might sound weird.

Also when something is out of the question,

it just means no, it's impossible.

To wing it means to improvise in the moment.

So you walk to the office,

The expression to fall flat

means you gave an idea or a suggestion and no one liked it.

But the expression to fall on deaf ears

means they were not listening to

or willing to consider your ideas or suggestions.

They fell on deaf ears.

I'm sorry, but our delicious drinks company

deserves more than this.

You really let us down.

To let someone down means to disappoint them.

So you disappointed the important clients.

This isn't good.

Your boss is furious,

very, very angry.

And he says,

"Hey, you really dropped the ball in there."

To drop the ball,

it means you had a responsibility

but you completely failed at it.

We lost the most important clients in the world

because of you,

and now our company is gonna go under.

When a company goes under, they go bankrupt.

No more money,

they fail, they close.

Yes, individual people can go bankrupt,

no more money,

but we only use to go under for businesses, not people.

No more job.

You already know what this means.

They both mean the same thing,

but this, we have to let you go.

It's a more nice, formal way to say you, no more job.

This one, however, you're fired,

it's more direct,

more aggressive and less polite way to say that.

This is the sad ending.

that they have no words.

the passive voice,

but literally this means to surprise someone

in an extreme way.

So yes, it could be negative in some contexts

like I thought "Terminator 3" was the best movie ever.

I am blown away at how stupid you are.

But usually it means you're very surprised in a good way.

Your boss is so happy.

Wow, you nailed it.

To nail something.

It means you did something that was very difficult

but you did it successfully.

We also use it in things like this,

when someone does a skateboard trick.

Wow, he nailed it.

And actually this is more casual than formal.

It's not rude,

but your boss might say this

if the situation is that you did something difficult

in a very successful way,

then it works.

In fact, you are so good that I'm blown away.

That was so good,

you're getting a raise, well done.

You're getting a raise.

Now, there's a lot of confusion

about the two verbs raise and rise.

First, this is a regular verb.

Raise, raised, raised,

and it's transitive,

which means it needs an object.

For example, if I raise the dead,

I make zombies.

Look how cute.

And we also use this as a noun.

Your boss gives you a raise.

As a verb, your boss raises your salary.

But rise, that's an irregular verb.

Rise, rose, risen.

That is intransitive,

which means no object.

For example, you want to make bread.

You put the dough in the oven and it rises by itself.

You don't do anything.

It does it by itself.

So I could also say

my salary is going to rise to £1 million a month.
