AVOID Common MISTAKES with Travel Vocabulary 🚫 (+ quiz) | Speak Like a Native

where I try to help you get a better understanding  of the English language, explaining verbs, nouns,  

and adjectives that sometimes can be confusing.  Easy for us native speakers, but not so easy for  

you people out there who are learning English  as a second language or as a foreign language.

So, we're here to help you in any aspect to  improve your conversational or business English,  

or even get you ready for those  all-important refresher exams.

Okay, so in this advanced English lesson,  what are we going to look at? Well,  

today we're going to look at all  about holidays and vacations. We're  

looking at vocabulary to talk  about holidays and vacations.

This will help you build up your vocabulary,  particularly if you're planning to do IELTS or  

the CAE exams, because it will help you when  you're talking about those sorts of topics.

Now, the first thing to get understanding about  is that there are lots of words that we use,  

like trip, journey, voyage, travel, and people can  get them confused. There are lots of similarities,  

but there's also some confusion. Trip,  a trip. Journey, a journey. Voyage,  

a voyage. They're all nouns. Travel, we usually  use it in relation to a verb, to travel.

How do you travel to work? I'm going to travel  to the United States next week on business,  

so it's a verb, whereas the others, I'm  going on a trip. I'm taking a journey. I  

would like to take a voyage on a  cruise ship. So, they are nouns.

Now, what verbs do we use when we're  talking about these nouns? Well,  

we can use to take a trip. So, the verb to take.  So, we can take a trip, we can take a voyage,  

we can take a journey. We can go on a trip, we  can go on a journey, we can go on a voyage. So,  

to take and to go. We can make a trip, we  can make a voyage, and we can make a journey.

And then, as I said before, we have the verb  to travel. Now, you can also, of course,  

book a trip. So, there's another verb you  can use, to book a trip, book a journey,  

and book a voyage on that cruise ship  that you're all dreaming about. So,  

they're the verbs to use  with those particular nouns.

Now, here's a little quiz for you. Here  is the sentence: He is used to a lot of  

business trips. So, you'll see it on the screen  there. He is used to a lot of business trips.

Okay, good. Well done. So, he is used to  taking a lot of business trips. He is used  

to going on a lot of business trips. He is  used to making a lot of business trips. Okay,  

so he is used to taking, going on, or making a  lot, but we don't see "he is used to doing." Yeah,  

so we don't do a trip or do a journey  or do a voyage. Make or take or go on.

All right, good. Well done. I remember with  travel, usually a verb, to travel to work,  

to travel by bike, to travel  by bus, to travel in your car.

Right, now vocabulary. Here are words connected  with holidays and these sorts of vacations:  

a cruise. So, when we go on a cruise, it's usually  a cruise ship. It's a cruise in the Mediterranean  

Sea, it's a cruise around the Caribbean islands,  it's a cruise in the South Seas. One of these big,  

massive floating hotels. In fact, from  the pictures I see, they're more like  

floating cities. There's so much to do, so much  activity, lots and lots of restaurants, theatres,  

cinemas, gyms, sporting activities, you have  everything. So, to go on a cruise for two weeks,  

to go on a cruise in the Mediterranean where you  stop off in five different cities in ten days.

A package holiday. To take or to book  a package holiday. A package holiday  

is something where everything is  usually included. You get your  

flights, you get your pick-up from the  airport, you get your accommodation,  

you get your return trip to the airport, and you  might even get a few excursions when you're in  

your hotel. This is generally what we call a  package holiday, everything bundled together.

And if you want to do it separately, then you  unbundle the package. You book the hotel yourself,  

you book a separate flight, you book your  own way of getting to and from the airport.  

But when you put it all together,  it's what we call a package holiday.

Number three: a city break. Well, a city  break is exactly what it says on the tin,  

as they say. A city break is a break for a  few days in a city. We're going to take a  

city break and we're going to travel to London.  We're going to take in a show on Friday night,  

we're going to do a bit of shopping on  Saturday morning, we're going to look  

at a few museums on Saturday afternoon, and  Sunday, if the weather's good, we're going to  

take a trip on the river or we're going to go to  the various parks in London and look around. So,  

we're going to have a city break, and  that break is going to take us three days.

Usually, a city break is short. You've  got a few days, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,  

return on the Monday morning or Sunday night.  But enough time to see around the city. I'm  

going on a city break to Prague before  Christmas to take in the Christmas markets,  

to take in the atmosphere when it's a little  bit colder in the centre of Europe. City break.

A luxury holiday. Well, we all dream of a  luxury holiday. It could be that cruise ship,  

of course, but a luxury holiday could be  that four or five-star exotic hotel in a  

beautiful location. Sun-drenched beaches,  beautiful water, sitting on golden sands,  

getting that massage, whatever  it might be. This is your luxury  

holiday. It's something you've been looking  for, saving up for, for years and years.

Or indeed, you might be really, really  lucky and win it as a prize in some  

competition. A luxury prize of a luxury holiday  on offer for the winner. Okay, a luxury holiday.

Lots and lots of you are doing that now in big,  big numbers, and we're growing it day by day.

Number six is all-inclusive. These are really  popular, particularly when you've got young  

kids who want to eat and drink and do this  and that. So, you go to one of these resorts,  

which is all-inclusive. When you get there,  you don't have to move at all. You've got food  

on the go from morning until night. Anytime  you want a drink, refreshing or otherwise,  

you can get it. You can use the entertainment  within the hotel, you can eat as much ice  

cream as you want. It's all-inclusive, everything  included. When you get to those sorts of resorts,  

they put a little wristband on your arm. And then  anytime you present yourself at one of the bars or  

the restaurants, they know you're staying in the  hotel and everything is there for you. These are  

lots of those wonderful holiday resorts in Turkey,  for example, which are all-inclusive resorts.

The very opposite of that is something  self-catering. "Oh no, I don't want the  

self-catering holiday." Self-catering, as  it sounds, you book an apartment somewhere,  

but you've got to cook, you've got to clean,  you've got to do everything yourself. The big  

advantage is they are usually cheaper. You just  book the accommodation. Perhaps they'll provide  

the pots and pans, bed linen, the towels,  and you have to do everything else. You  

have to cook the breakfast, you have to cook  or make the lunch, cook the dinner. But it's  

a cheaper way to get to see some cities. A lot  of these places now that we call Airbnb resorts.  

You get them cheaper than a hotel, it gets you  access to a city that perhaps you hadn't seen.

But it is self-catering. You have to look  after yourself. So, if there are kids,  

it might be easier because then you can eat when  you want to eat, you can put the kids to bed when  

you want to put them to bed, and it's much easier  to deal with them rather than trying to get them  

to sit still in a busy hotel restaurant, which  is almost impossible. Not so, self-catering.

Number eight: a holiday which is off the  beaten track. The beaten track means a  

holiday area or destination that most people  go to. It could be the Mallorca islands,  

it could be the Canary Islands, it could be  the south of Spain, it could be the north of  

Italy. These are all well-known destinations. But  when you go to something off the beaten track,  

it's something a little bit unusual. It could be a  trekking holiday, it could be somewhere in Borneo,  

it could be somewhere in South America.  Wherever it is, that's a little bit unusual,  

a little bit different than the norm, then  this could be regarded as a holiday off  

the beaten track. Perhaps you're going to go  kayaking and you've got a tent with you. So,  

wherever the river takes you, that's where you'll  stop, and that's where you'll pitch your tent,  

and that's where you'll have your night's  sleep or your cooking by the open fire.

So, it's a little bit offA holiday off the beaten  track means a holiday area or destination that  

most people do not go to. It could be somewhere  unusual, like a trekking holiday in Borneo or  

an adventure in South America. You won't see  thousands of people; you might even be lucky  

to see anybody. This type of holiday offers a  unique and different experience from the norm.

Adventure holidays are usually sports-related  and can include activities like trekking,  

canoeing, kayaking, horse riding, skiing, or  mountain climbing. Some people like adventure  

holidays because there is a certain  amount of risk, a lot of activity,  

and action. If you're a sporty type of  person, you'll enjoy these holidays as  

they leave you completely exhausted but  satisfied at the end of the day. You  

pack your gear in a backpack and set  off for the adventure of a lifetime.

Finally, many young people enjoy  interrailing. Interrailing involves  

buying a ticket that allows you to travel  around Europe. You might start in London,  

Paris, or Madrid and go from city to city,  spending a couple of days in each. With an  

interrailing ticket, you can get on any train  in any country, making it a cost-effective way  

to see Europe. Youth hostels offer cheap  accommodation, making this an ideal option  

for young students, but it may not  be suitable for kids or older adults.

So, we have covered a cruise, a package holiday,  a city break, a luxury holiday, an all-inclusive  

holiday, self-catering, off the beaten track,  adventure holidays, and interrailing. If I  

could go back in my years, I would choose  interrailing because I really love trains.
