Easily confused English verbs

I personally still have to use some logic to remember

the difference between these.

Today I want to share with you four commonly confused verbs that I'm

sure have driven all of us crazy at some point of our learning process.

I have to confess that even now I still have to think for

a couple of seconds about the difference between them.

We have all probably confused these two verbs at some point of our lives.

This confusion usually happens during the use of reported speech,

a tense used to narrate situations and the dialogues of the people involved.

Say focusses on the words that someone said,

report someone’s words literally.

Tell focuses on the content or messages of what someone said,

focussing on the information regardless of the exact words

the person used.

Also, when we use tell, the pronoun comes directly after tell.

We say, Ximena told him and not Ximena said him.

Let's check an example.

And then he said, I'm not paying $50 for that.

And then he told him he wasn't going to pay $50 for that.

I bet you have stopped at some point to think about

the difference between these two.

Hearing is an event.

It is something which happens to us as a natural process.

Listening is an action. It is something we do consciously.

Still confused? Here's some examples. Suddenly, I heard a noise.

Someone was in the garden.

I listened very carefully for footsteps.

The difference between these three is a little tricky.

It focusses on the attention and time we spend doing this action.

See means noticing something using your eyes, and watch is similar,

to look at.

But it usually means that we look at something for a period of time,

especially if it is something changing or moving.

Let's check the difference in an example.

I love tennis but my friend doesn't really care about it.

While I watch the match, my friend looked at her phone.

I saw three matches that day, but my friend only saw other people post.

I personally still have to use some logic to remember

the difference between these.

Lend means you give something to someone for a short time expecting

you will get it back.

Borrow is a regular verb, meaning to get something

from someone, intending to give it back after a short time.

So, when you give something, you lend it.

When you get or receive something, you borrow it.

For example...

Wow, can I borrow those earrings?

Okay, I’ll lend you my earrings if you lend me that lipstick.

Deal.

Those are just a few words that can be very confusing.
