Using Tongue Twisters to Improve Your Pronunciation in English

Hi everyone. I'm Jennifer from English with  Jennifer. Try saying "toy boat" five times fast.  

Toy boat, toy boat, toy boat, toy boat, toy  boat. It's not easy, is it? But if I slow down,  

I can do it. Toy boat, toy boat,  toy boat, toy boat, toy boat.  

Tongue twisters can be short or long, but they're  all designed to twist our tongue. We can untwist  

it and speak clearly if we slow down just  enough to stay in control of our pronunciation.

Right now, let's use three more tongue twisters  to work on clear articulation. Tongue twisters  

are fun and, of course, they don't sound like  everyday conversation, but the point is to teach  

your articulators -- the parts of your mouth -- to  move in order to produce clear sounds in English.

Try this one. Rubber baby buggy bumpers.

Find the rhythm. Rubber baby buggy bumpers.

Can you speed it up? Rubber baby buggy bumpers.

Let's say it three times fast. Rubber baby  buggy bumpers, rubber baby buggy bumpers,  

rubber baby buggy bumpers. Slow it down  if you need to. Rubber baby buggy bumpers.

Good.

Here's the next one. How much wood would a  woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Say it slowly at first and find the rhythm.  

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck  if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Then speed it up. How much wood would a  woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Here's a tip. Record yourself two times. First, go  slowly use good rhythm and connected sounds. Then  

go faster. Speed it up. Can you still stay  in control? If not, slow it back down again.

Practice will help you get faster  while still sounding clear,  

smooth, and natural. How much wood would  woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Okay. Last one. Nine nice  night nurses nursing nicely.

This is a fun use of sounds and word  forms. We have "nice" and "nicely,"  

the adjective and adverb. Then we have  the plural noun "nurses" and "nursing,"  

a verb form. It's a participle  describing what the nurses are doing.

Go slow at first and find the rhythm.  Nine nice night nurses nursing nicely.

How fast can you go? Nine nice  night nurses nursing nicely.

It's fun to try it fast, but remember  the important thing is to remain  

in control of your pronunciation.  If you need to, slow back down.

Here's a tip. Think of a word  that's not easy for you to say.

Use a rhyming dictionary to find  one or two other words that rhyme.

Think of words with similar sounds.

Then create your own tongue  twister and practice it.
