Together Flavia, Andreia, and I have filmed over 50 basic English lessons.

I remember back in the first lesson we started with, "Hi. How are you?"

Now my students know a lot. They know the simple present and simple past,

the present progressive and past progressive. They know basic uses of modal verbs, including CAN, COULD, MAY, MIGHT, SHOULD, MUST.

They know quantifiers like "many" and "much." Comparative and superlative adjectives like "better" and "best."

Indefinite pronouns like "someone" and "something." And quite a lot more!

I hope you got a lot from the past lessons, and I hope you're enjoying this learning experience. In 2020, things changed.

Flavia, Andreia, and I stopped meeting because of COVID. We took a long break. Then not too long ago, we met on Zoom.

This lesson will look a little different, but hopefully, you'll still find it useful and interesting.

Right now, let's practice agreeing. Do you know others ways to say "me too" and "me neither"? Listen.

Hi ladies! Hi. So good to see you, but I'm sorry because I cannot hug you.

I'm sorry. Virtual hug. Virtual hug. Virtual. What does "virtual" mean?Virtual.

Ah, when we stay in different locations.

Yes, and we're on Zoom. It's online, so virtual hugs. Yeah. That's what I'm sending to you.

And there are so many things that we can talk about, but one thing I think we all know is that it's sad. It's sad because things are different.

Things have changed, but we find ways to continue, and so here we are. We can study together. But I'm a little sad. And do you remember what we say to agree?

If I say, "I'm a little sad." And you say, "Yeah, me too." Me too. Yeah. There's different ways to say that. Um, we could say, for example, "I use Zoom a lot."

I use Zoom every day. I use Zoom every day. And you could say, "Me too." Me too. Or, "So do I." So do I.

And we use "so do I" also to agree. It's positive, affirmative. So, you can use "me too" or "so do I."

So, for example, Flavia, if I say, "I love animals," you can say, "me too" or "so do I." So do I. I know Andreia loves animals too.

Um, Andreia, I read books. So do I.

Flavia, I read magazines. Yeah, so do I. "So do I" or "me too." Uh-huh.

Andreia, I enjoy watching movies. So do I. Uh-huh.

I watch romantic movies, Flavia. Oh, me too. "Me too." "So do I." Okay. So do I Me too. But what if I start changing it?

So, for example, "me too" is nice because we can just say "me too, me too," and it's good for present, past, future. If I start changing the time

with "so do I," you have to start changing the verb. For example, I ate dinner last night. I ate dinner. You can say, "Me too." Or you'll have to change DO to the past tense.

Oh, did. DO becomes DID. So, instead of "So do I," you're going to say, "So did I." So did I. I ate good food, Andreia. So did I. Yeah.

Um, I cooked dinner, Flavia. Uh, so did I. Yeah, good, you didn't buy it. Right? Okay.

I watched some TV last night, Andreia. So did I. Yeah. I just watched a little bit of this, a little bit of that. Some old movies. Some old movies.

Okay, so now I'm going to throw in a different one for Flavia. Instead of the simple past, I'm going to switch it to past progressive.

At midnight, at midnight, I was sleeping. You could say, "Me too." But...

I was sleeping. What is the helping verb? I WAS sleeping. Oh, so WAS I. So was I.

So if I have a helping verb, like WAS or AM or WILL, that's the verb you use. Think of the helping verbs you use to make questions.

Were you sleeping? Yes, I was sleeping. Ah, the helping verb is WAS/WERE. Past progressive. I was sleeping at midnight. So was I. So was I.

Andreia, at 5 o'clock this morning, very early, 5 o'clock, I was sleeping.

So was I. Yeah. Good. Too early. Were your cats sleeping? No. No, they were awake. But you were sleeping.

Flavia, was Lila sleeping this morning at 5 o'clock? Yes? Yes. Does she wake you up sometimes? Uh, she sleeps a lot. She sleeps a lot. Yeah.

Sometimes my dog wakes me up. The dog...if the dog hears something, she's like "Rrr!" I'm like, "Okay!"

But now we're going to switch it to something else. Talking about the future. Again, think about the verb that I'm using.

Tomorrow I am going to do something. I'm going to take a walk. Flavia. Just say, "Yes. Me too." [laughs] Tomorrow I'm going to take a walk. So...

am I. Yes. So am I. And we say it fast. So am I. So am I. And really fast: So am I. Not, "So...am...I." But, "So am I."

So am I. It happens really fast. So am I. So did I.

You'll hear it, and it's very fast in conversation. Tomorrow I'm going to take a walk. Oh, so am I. So am I. Mm-hmm.

Andreia, next week, I'm going to enjoy the nice weather.

So am I. So am I. Yeah. We all will.

Right now....today it's a little chilly. I have short sleeves, but I have a sweater. Yeah. You're in long sleeves, huh, Flavia? Yeah. You were cold this morning?

Uh-huh. You're always cold. Always. Yeah. I still sleep with socks sometimes. I sometimes sleep with socks. Do you sleep with socks?

Yes. So do I. So do I. Yes, yes. Because it's present tense. Right?

So, most verbs will use DO, DOES, DID. But if it's the verb TO BE, you use the verb TO BE. I am tired. So am I. I'm excited. So am I.

Your turn. Respond with "So do I." But use the correct verb.

I like pop music.

I enjoy good food.

I studied science in high school.

I'm busy right now.

I'll take a shower later tonight.

Good. So we have two ways to agree: Me too. So do I. Do you know a third way?

How do we use "too"? Listen.

Tell me about your glasses. I wear glasses. I need my glasses. I need my glasses. Andreia?

I wear new glasses. Okay, but she just said, "I need my glasses." And you agree? Uh, me too.

Me too. Or? So do I. So do I.

So do I...sometimes.

They have...Can you see they have the blue light? It filters the blue light. I don't know if you can tell. So, when I'm at the computer for a long time, it helps with the blue light.

Yeah. So, I wear them too. Ah! I could also use "too" at the end. Watch that. Look how interesting. Okay, so you know "me too."

Um, watch what's happening. We have three ways to agree. The easiest? Me too. But if you use "so," you have to be careful with the helping verb. So do I. So did I. So will I.

Right? Or you can use "too" at the end. I wear glasses. I do too. I am too.

Three ways. "Me too" is the easiest. But "me too" is kind of informal. It's very casual. With friends, right?

Tomorrow I'm going to exercise, Flavia. Agree three ways. Tomorrow I'm going to exercise.

Me too. So do I. ...So am I. And, um, I am too. Yes! I am too.

Mm-hmm. Listen for my helping verb. If I have it, use it. Right? So, tomorrow, um, I will... What will I do? I will call home and say hi to family.

Tomorrow I will call home and say hi to family. I will call. Try that, Andreia.

So will I. It's just three words. SO + (verb) + I. So will I. So will I. But if you want to put "too" at the end, you say, "I will too." I will too.

And you can't use contractions here. That's so short. You can't say, "I'll too." Uh-uh. I will too. I will too.

Your turn. Respond and agree three different ways. I'm thirsty.

I'd like a glass of water.

I was tired last night.

What about agreeing with a negative statement? Do you remember "me neither"? Let's practice other ways to agree. Listen.

I don't like the cold air. I don't like the cold breeze. That's negative. I taught you to say, "Me neither." Me neither.

That's easiest. Again, like "me too"..."me neither" -- you can use it for past, present, and future. Right? But again, we have the choices.

Instead of "so," what we say in less...I guess slightly more formal conversation, "Neither do I." Neither.

You'll hear /ˈniðər, ˈnaɪðər/. Doesn't matter. /ˈniðər, ˈnaɪðər/ Okay?

And again, you'll have to pay attention to what verb tense I'm using. Past? Present? Let's start easy.

Flavia, I don't have a million dollars. Me neither. Me neither. Or? Neither do I. How sad. Andreia, I don't lift heavy weights.

Me neither. Me neither. Or? Neither do I. Neither do I. Yeah. I have, um, two-pound weights.

Yeah. I can lift two pounds. Ah, Flavia, I don't like snakes.

Neither do I. Yeah. Andreia, I don't smoke. Me neither. Or? Neither do I. Good job. Yeah. Do your husbands smoke?

No. No. Good. Maybe in the past, but not now. I don't know. Flavia, does your husband smoke? No. That's good. That's good. Healthy family. Healthy household.

Okay. Let's switch to the past. Again, pay attention to helping verbs. I'm in the past tense. Andreia, I didn't drink orange juice this morning.

I didn't drink. I didn't drink orange juice this morning. Neither did I. Neither did I. Neither did I. Uh-huh. Me neither. I didn't watch a movie yesterday, Flavia.

Neither did I. Yeah. Neither did I. Again, fast...neither did i. Neither did I. [repeats]

And you hold out the "I." Neither did I. Try it, Andreia. Neither did I. Neither did I. Neither did I. It sounds like music.

Ah, neither did I. Andreia, last night at 9 o'clock, I wasn't sleeping.

Neither was I. At 9 o'clock this morning, I wasn't exercising, Flavia. Neither was I. Yeah. Neither was I. Mm-hmm. Good, good, good.

You're catching on. I'm not listening to music at the moment. Neither am I. Neither am I. I'm sitting. I'm not standing now, Flavia. I'm not standing.

Neither am I. Neither am I. Yeah. You ladies have Zoom lessons, I'm sure, quite often, so you're sitting a lot. Yeah? Yes. Is it hard?

Uh-huh. What do you do? Do you stand up? Do you exercise? Do you walk? What? I...stretch. You stretch. Yeah, it's good to stretch even for a few seconds.

They also say you should look out a window. Because I'm in front of the computer a lot too. And they say looking at the computer for a long time...it's not great,

so I also remember to look out the window to help my eyes that way. Yeah. Things are different.

Okay. Your turn. Respond with "Neither do I." But use the correct verb.

I don't have a sports car.

I can't fly a plane.

I didn't travel much last year.

I wasn't sleeping at 9 o'clock this morning.

I'm not tired.

So, we have two ways to agree with a negative statement. Me neither. Neither do I.

And by the way, you may hear some American English speakers use a variation: Me either. So don't be surprised if you hear that.

Now, there is one more way to agree with a negative statement. How do we use "either" with a verb? Listen.

"Neither" is negative. If you use "either," you need to use a negative verb. Not + either. I'm not either. I don't either. I won't either.

You have to have a negative verb, and then use "either" at the end. I don't have tea. There's three ways you can agree, Flavia. I don't have tea.

Me neither. Yeah. Neither do I. Don't either. And you say "I." I don't either.

So, me neither, neither do I, I don't either.

I'd say, "I don't either" might be more common. I don't either. Yeah, I think I'd say that more than, "Neither do I." To my ears, "neither do I" sounds a little bit more formal. Yeah.

And again, it's very easy to agree with "me too" and "me neither." It works all the time. It works all the time. Okay. Try something negative. Um,

I'm not wearing a sweater. I'm wearing a t-shirt. Andreia, I'm not wearing a sweater. Me neither. Okay. So, me neither. And the next one is going to be...

Neither was I. Present tense? Neither am I. Neither am I. If I switch to the past: Yesterday I wasn't wearing a sweater. Neither was I. But right now? Neither am I.

The sounds is, like, difficult. Neither am I. [repeats] Neither am I.

And the other way? So, I'm not wearing a sweater right now. Me neither. Neither am I. Flavia? I'm not either.

So, when you use "either" at the end, the verb has to be negative. Which verb? The helping verb. The helping verb. Okay?

I can't cook lobster. Try that. Neither can I. Yes. Or? I can't too. Negative? I can't either. I can't either.

Good job. Yeah. Listen for those helping verbs. Sometimes helping verbs are modal verbs. Okay?

Okay. Your turn. Respond and agree three different ways. Me neither. Neither + (verb). And (negative verb) + either.

I don't want to stop learning.

I can't find enough time to do everything.

I won't say goodbye.
