Lesson 107 👩‍🏫 Basic English with Jennifer - TOO and ENOUGH

Hi everyone. I'm Jennifer from English with Jennifer let's study basic

and Andreia. They learn new words and new grammar

through conversation with me. Are you ready?

Before we talked about "me too." Like, "I like chocolate." "Me too."

"I love animals." "Me too." Now we're going to use

"too" for problems. Right? My shoes are too tight.

My...the earrings are too heavy. That's not good.

And how do we use it? We use "too" + an adjective or you can use an

adverb. Right? I like movies, but they speak

too fast. That's a problem. Right?

It's funny, but it's a little too fast.

I like music, but...

again, they sing too fast. So "too" is creating a problem. Too fast. Too slow.

I get angry when someone drives too slow. "Go faster!" I get upset. That's a problem

for me.

All right. So, I will describe a situation.

Listen and tell me what the problem is using "too." Amy has a suitcase.

She's going on a trip. She packed her suitcase.

The suitcase won't close. What's the problem? This with suitcase

is too full. Too full. It's too full. Yeah. It's

probably going to be too heavy. Okay. Um, Ben is eating soup

and he burned his tongue. Right? Burn. Ouch!

He burned his tongue. Why?

Because the soup is too hot.

Exactly. Right? Rick's neighbors are having a party.

Rick is trying to study, but it's hard. Why?

Because

the people are speaking too loud.

Yeah. Maybe they're speaking too loud. It's a party. Yeah. What else?

What else is too loud? The sound. The sound. The noise. The music. I'm sure there's music.

The music is too loud.

The noise is too loud.

Ideas? What should they do or what should Rick do?

He can't study. Ideas?

He should study in another place.

Maybe. Maybe he should go to the library. Or?

He should call the police.

If it's really loud. Yes. Oh yeah. Um, should he call the neighbors?

Should he talk to the neighbors? Or no? Yeah.

No. No? Yeah. I wouldn't.

Julia and Paul have three kids and only two bedrooms.

Why don't they like their apartment?

They think it's too small. Right?

Ben wants to take a short trip, but airplane tickets are over two hundred

dollars. Why is he upset?

He's upset because the tickets are too expensive.

Allison can't hear her professor. He has a soft voice, so what's the problem?

He speaks too softly.

Okay. Let's think about another word in English.

"Enough." What does it mean? How do we use it? Listen.

So, we know that "too" is a problem and "enough" isn't perfect, but it's

okay. Right? Fast enough. Hot enough. Warm enough.

Okay. So, let's make some comparisons between the US and Brazil.

Life here. Life back home. What's one difference?

The cold. For me. Okay. The winter. Yes. The winter.

What's wrong? Here it's too cold. It's too cold. It's too cold. Is the

winter too long? It's too long. Okay. So, winter's too cold.

The winter's too long. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Um, do you like the food?

Which do you like better, the food in Brazil or the food here?

The food in here...The food here...here ...not "in here." The food here. The food here

is good enough.

So, it's not too bad. It's good enough. But you have to be careful because if

you say "good enough" it's like...uh.

So, some people might be like, "What?!" It's like you have to be very careful with,

um, a compliment. If you say, "Is she pretty?" "She's pretty enough." That's not good.

So, if you say, "How's the food?" "It's good enough."

You're saying it could be better, so people can get angry.

So, just think of like, um, you know the girl. "Am I pretty?"

"You're pretty enough." Oh! No. That's not good.

Remember we use "too" + an adjective or an adverb: too hot, too slow.

We use an adjective or an adverb before the word "enough":

hot enough, slow enough.

Your turn! Answer my questions. Here's a sweater for you. It's size small.

Is it big enough for you?

You can visit me in Boston this winter. Here are some gloves for you.

Will they be warm enough?

When you watch a TV show in English, is it too

fast or do they speak slowly enough for you to understand?

There's one more use of "enough."

"Enough" + a noun. Right? "Enough" + a noun.

So you're saying if i go to a restaurant in Brazil,

it's going to be more expensive. So, if I go with my husband, there's two

of us, and we have a nice dinner, we get dessert...if i go with

forty dollars, is that enough money for two people to have dinner?

In Brazil? In Brazil. And I go to a Brazilian restaurant with forty dollars. Is forty

dollars enough? Yes. Yes. For two people? Yes.

And if we order glasses of wine? It depends on the restaurant. Is thirty dollars enough? No. No. No.

So, $30 isn't enough. I won't have enough money.

Yeah. Okay. So, you could also do a sentence like this. That's enough.

That's not enough.

So, if someone is pouring you juice or tea or whatever, and I'm pouring, and I

stop there, I could ask

"Is that enough?" Yes. And then I give it. Yeah, that's enough.

Right? Maybe you don't want the full glass. Say, "Jennifer, that's

enough." Stop. That's enough for me. I don't want to

drink more. Is that enough? That's enough. That's not enough. And the

question: Is that enough? It could be anything in terms of size,

number, whatever. Enough money. Okay. Let's say I'm

going on a trip to Brazil, and I want to buy

sneakers. like this. I'm gonna go with fifty dollars. Is that enough?

Yes. It's enough. It's enough. Do you agree? Maybe? Dollars. In dollars, it's enough.

$50 is enough? For good sneakers. Yeah.

Okay. I want to go and buy, um, a very nice swimsuit in Brazil,

and I have $20. Is that enough?

That's not...

That isn't enough. That isn't enough. That isn't enough or

that's not enough. Okay. How much do I need for a nice

bathing suit?

In dollars?

$50?

Or more. Or more...oh! A very nice bathing suit, huh? Yes. A hundred dollars?

Really? It depends. It's expensive. Yeah. I think if I see a swimsuit and it's $200,

that's too expensive. It's too expensive. That's

too expensive. Yeah. I can't spend $200 on a swimsuit.

Me too.

Ah! I can't spend...I cannot. Me neither. Me neither. Good.
