How to Use "Though" Correctly in English 👩‍🏫 Learn 2 uses!

Hi everyone. It's Jennifer from English with  Jennifer. Let's talk about the word "though."  

Though. This word has two different uses, so we're  going to make sure you understand the difference.

First, we can use it like "although" or  "even though." It expresses a contrast.  

We use "though" to introduce a  surprising or contrasting idea.

We form an adverb clause with "though,"  which means "though" functions as a  

subordinating conjunction. It joins  ideas together. Here's an example.

Though I know too much sugar isn't  good, I admit I have a sweet tooth.

I can also flip this around and  say, "I admit I have a sweet tooth,  

though I know too much sugar isn't good."

The adverb clause is part of a complex sentence.  

There's an independent clause  and a dependent clause.

In this example, I can also use  "although" and "even though."  

The words do the same job. Although I know too  much sugar isn't good... Even though I know  

too much sugar isn't good... All three words,  all three conjunctions express a contrast.

It's useful to know different  structures that allow you to express  

basically the same ideas. Can you  rewrite these two sentences using "but"?

Here's how I'd rewrite them. I  really love chocolate and pastries,  

but I try to limit how much sugar I eat.  

Cake isn't healthy, but it's okay to treat  yourself to a slice every now and then.

Now here's the second use of "though." We can use  it like "however" -- another word of contrast.  

In this use, we place "though" at  the end of a sentence. Take a look.

I enjoyed the dinner a lot. I didn't eat  much, though. I had eaten a big lunch.

I see my neighbors almost every day, I  haven't seen Mr. Riley in a few days, though.

Quick quiz. Listen to these two statements.  

One. I'd love to watch that movie. I'm a little  tired, though. Maybe tomorrow night? Two.  

Movies are entertaining. However, we must not  forget the value of reading quality fiction.

Now which statement is more  typical of spoken English?

One. Right? The first statement is what I would  say. The second statement is what I would write.  

Both "though" and "however" express a contrast.  

"However" is something that we use more in  writing, and it sounds a bit more formal,  

so think of "though" as a contrast  word used in spoken English.
