Do you see them? There are three "that" clauses.

Now listen.

Is it okay to say:

Maybe you know Flavia and Andreia are from Brazil.

I think these are two lovely ladies.

Flavia and Andreia understand mistakes are okay.

Yes, I can say that. It's okay to say the word "that."

It's okay to take the word "that" out.

Let's practice more now with Flavia and Andreia.

Hey Flavia. How are you doing? Good. And you? Pretty good.

How about you, Andreia?

So-so. So-so?

I know that you were sick. Are you sick now? Are you better?

Yes. A little better? A little. A little better.

I'm sorry. What hurts? Does your head hurt? Does your throat hurt? Throat. Say, "My throat hurts." My throat hurts.

I'm sorry. Drink tea. Yes.

Tea with honey.

Yes. Tea is good.

Do you hear what I said? I said,

"I know that you were sick."

I know that...you were sick. We can use know,

think,

believe, feel...THAT.

Right. With an idea. You were sick. I know that you were sick.

And we can say,"I know that you were sick."

Or "I know you were sick."

were sick.

And I can do with or without. I know that you were sick. I know you were sick.

Oh. Yeah.

And other verbs with "that" - - you could say:

know

think

believe

"Believe" is similar to "think."

feel

+ THAT

And then this is a whole idea. Do you see [subject + verb]?

"I know that you were sick" or "I know you were sick." You can use any of these verbs.

Know, think, believe, feel.

So we can practice with these verbs.

I think we...you guys know each other very well. I know you. I'm starting to know more. Let's remember

two or three things that we know about each other using "know that."

Flavia, I know that you're married. I know that you love coffee, and I think you like the beach.

Yeah. What do you know about Andreia?

I know that she likes dogs and cats.

Yeah.

I know...

that she likes to sleep. Oh! I know that she likes to sleep on the bus. Yeah. Yes.

If you're thinking, you think, "I think..." if you're not sure. Maybe yes. Maybe no.

I think...

that she misses her family.

Yeah. I believe that.

What do you know about me?

I know that...

you play the piano. Mm-hm.

I know that...

you like dogs. Yes.

I think...

I know that you [are a] good person.

Aw. Thank you!

I know that you're a good person. You're a good person.

I know that you're a good person.

Thank you.

I believe that you're very sweet. Both of you.

Now it's your turn. Look at the photos and make sentences.

Use "that" with a full idea, a full clause.

subject + verb

Say your sentences out loud.

Note how the word "that" has a short a sound. That. /æ/ That.

In fast speech, Americans often change "that" to "thet."

Listen. I'll speak slowly and then I'll speak faster. I'll change "that" to "thet."

I know that /ðæt/ you're a student.

I know that /ðət/ you're a student.

I think that /ðæt/ you're doing well.

I think that /ðət/ you're doing well.

Did you hear a difference?

So we can do "know." We could also do... If these are verbs...

We can also do adjectives.

For example, I'm happy that...

I'm here.

And again, with or without. I'm happy that I'm here. I'm happy I'm here.

I'm happy that...

I'm here. But again, you need a subject and verb. Subject and verb. It's a whole idea.

I'm happy that I'm here. What other adjectives? You can do happy...

sad...

+ THAT

Right? Adjective + THAT

So think of things that make you happy. What makes you happy?

I'm happy that it's a sunny day.

I'm happy that it's warm. I'm happy that it's not raining.

Me too.

I'm happy that it's Friday.

Yes.

"Can" today. "Couldn't" in the past.

Today. I'm happy that I'm going to New York. I'm going to New York today.

Nice. Right? Some things can make us sad. You can think not just today, but

all the time work or in general.

I'm sad that I'm getting older.

I'm sad that I'm getting gray hair.

Sometimes. I'm like, "No!"

This makes me sad. So I'm sad that sometimes I find gray hair.

What makes you sad?

Say, "I'm not sad about anything. I'm happy."

No.

I'm sad that I...

I saw

abandoned animal or animal abandoned?

Abandoned.

And very good. Today I see. In the past -- saw.

I'm sad that I saw an abandoned animal.

I'm sad that I saw an

abandoned animal. A dog? A cat?

You could also do "angry." You know? I know you guys don't like the bus.

You can tell me about the bus. Say, "I'm happy that I can ride the bus every day!"
