How you say words matters!

Hi. How are you? Hello. How are you? Hi. Did you know that even the simplest of words in

English - yeah, you're learning English, you learn some words, and you know the word "hello",

you know the word "yes", you know the word "no", you know the word "really", and you

probably know the word "but". Knowing the word is not enough. What you have to do is

know how to express yourself by using a very short vocabulary that you might have right

now, and that's okay. If you don't know a lot of English vocabulary words, it's alright.

Maybe even more important than knowing the words is knowing how to express yourself by

using the simple words. Let's take the first example. When I first popped up, how did you

feel? Did you feel like, "Oh, hey, what's happened to Ronnie? Why is it... Why doesn't

she want to talk to us?" Now, if you don't want to talk to someone or you want to express

anger or you're mad, what you're going to do is you're going to say this word quickly

in a very short time. "Hello." If I'm on the street and I see someone, "Hi", and I'm very

expressive and happy, and the person says to me, "Hello", I know right away, "Hmm, something's

wrong here." Okay? Because they used a very short way to say hello... Uh-oh. They might

be having a bad day, they could be angry or mad, or they don't want to talk to me. That's

fine, I don't care, but you have to be careful the way that you say hello to people, and

you have to decide. Are you angry? Do you want to talk to the person? If not, a short

"Hi" or "Hello" is good. But if you want to be friendly or warm, what you're going to

do-very easy-is you're going to extend your word. So, you're going to make your word long,

and it's only one word, which is cool. So instead of saying "Hello", you're going to

expand and say "Hello", or you can expand the "L" part, "Hello". It doesn't matter what

part of the word you expand, you just have to expand it. So, I want you to practice.

You're angry, "Hello". You're happy and friendly to see someone, you want to warm, "Hello".

Smiling is always good. And if you're kind of like... If you're just saying it like a

word, I guess we could say it at a normal pace, like "Hello". Don't forget, it's a lot

to do with your facial expressions, too. So, when you want to seem happy, extend the word

and smile. "Hello". And you might be wondering, "Ronnie, what? Why are you teaching us this?

Why is this important?" And the reason is I found this out through my friend. When people

came to her house, she just didn't say, "Oh, hey. How's it going?" She had the most warming,

welcoming, long "Hello", and immediately people felt welcome. It's one word, but that one

word can mean so much.

Now, another example of a word, very short word, you probably already know it, is the

word "really", r-e-a-l-l-y. So, for example, if somebody tells you that you made a mistake,

you're like, "Really? Did I really spell'surprise' wrong?" Oh, I did. If you want to convey to

the person that you're kind of angry about their... What they've said to you, then you're

going to use the very short way to say, "Really?" If you're surprised about something, like,

"Oh, really? Oh, I spelled'surprise' wrong." S-u-r-p-r-i-s-e. Now, is that right? Did I

spell "surprise" right? Did I really do it right this time? If I did, then I would be

like, "Really? I got it. Yay!" So, when we say the word "really", if you make it short

and strong, it's like you're angry, like, "Really? I guess I'll have to change this."

But if you make it long and more beautiful, it makes the person more comfortable. If somebody

tells you information that you think is kind of cool or exciting, for example, "Oh, hey,

Ronnie, yesterday I went to the store and I bought you a present." "Really? Really?

Woohoo!" This makes the person feel, "Oh, Ronnie's excited. I bought her a present."

By the way, Ronnie doesn't want presents; Ronnie wants money. Hit the "donate" button

at the bottom and give me money. "That's your present to me. I will be really surprised

if you give me money. Woohoo!" Okay. Or a car. But another way you can help yourself

using this word is if you make it into a question. So, again, somebody's telling you information,

and if you go, "Really?" When it's short, you're telling the person, like, "I don't

care. Don't talk to me. Your story's boring." But exact same word in a long reply, "Really?"

as a question will make the person want to tell you more automatically. You don't have

to worry about struggling for conversation, like, "Do I talk? What do I say? Oh my god.

What if the conversation stops?" You have to say, "Really?" and then the person will

continue automatically the conversation. It's magic. Mm-hmm. Magic, ladies and gentlemen.

Now, really good example, probably the first English word that you knew and you love is

the word "fuck". Now, one of my favourite words because it can mean so many things.

You probably know we use it when we're angry, like, "Fuck!" You get... It's an angry face,

and you say it loud, and you say it in a very short way. "Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. I dropped

something. Fuck." Now, sometimes it's not appropriate to say these bad words, so you're

going to substitute words. You can say "fick", you can say anything you want, really. "Fudge".

But it doesn't matter what you say; it's how you say it again. If you're angry, it's a

short word. Check this out. "Fuck!" What emotion are you getting from that? Do you think I'm

angry still? I've said the word "fuck". No, I'm not angry. I'm friendly, or I'm surprised,

or I'm excited about something. If you tell me, "Hey, Ronnie, I just sent you $10." "Fuck!"

"That's amazing. Thank you." So one little word is going to change your communication

style with people.

Always, the very, very short words that we learn in English, "yes" and "no". Now, I'm

guilty of this myself. When somebody asks me a stupid question, if my answer is short,

"yes", and I get in the face, this is communicating to the person, "Don't talk to me. I'm angry.

Your question's stupid. Don't do it." Sometimes we're not conscious that we're doing this,

but if you're in a social situation, if you're at work, yeah, people are going to ask stupid

questions, but just try and make it a nice "yes". "Yes, stupid person." You don't have

to say "stupid person" under your breath, but if someone asks you, "Oh, yes", it makes

the person happy that you're doing it like that. Short and fast, "yes", the person knows

you're irritated. It's okay to show irritation, but sometimes it's not appropriate. And of

course, the word "no". So, are you enjoying this video? No. Oh. I know by your short,

fast answer, "Don't talk to me, Ronnie. You're angry or you're mad." If you want to say "no"

in a surprise way, you're telling someone the opposite. Are you enjoying this video?

"No, I love it. Cool." So, it's not what you say, it's how you say it. Five short words

in English that can change how you communicate with people. If it's short, bye. If it's long,

bye.
