English Phrasal Verbs with CATCH

Now today we're going to be learning all

about phrasal verbs. We just did one

didn't we Chris? We did indeed on the Learn

British English Free channel; we've had a chat

about phrasal verbs to do with sleep.

Sleep which is very important and very

regularly used. As we sleep on

a regular basis, hopefully, if we're lucky.

Every day! So today we're looking at

phrasal verbs that use the word catch.

There's quite a few of them and if we're

not careful it can catch us out.

Very good, you know i think that might be

one of the main ones we need to learn. It

is definitely so to be caught out means

to be and caught in the act of

wrongdoing usually, not always in the act

of wrongdoing but sometimes you can be

caught out, just taken by surprise. For

example, the CCTV; which is a monitoring

video system; might catch out the robbers

when they're committing a robbery. Like

when someone tries to steal something

from shop, the shop will often have a

camera and it can catch out anyone who

tries to do that.

Yes it's being caught in the act. What

else do we have that uses catch? I wanted

to talk about catch on.

Oh and there are two uses of this verb

in particular. If someone catches on, it

means they understand something

so for example you might have a really

bright student, very clever student, he

catches on quickly.

Yes I know that lots of you catch on

quickly because you're always

demonstrating that you understand the

lessons that you've learned

on our videos, absolutely. And another

similar one is to describe when

something becomes popular. Right! So it

might be a new trends and new topic of

interest, it catches on, so it becomes

popular quickly?It does indeed yes.

Cool so that's catch on and catch out;

Finally we're going to look at the

phrasal verb catch up. Now there are many

uses for this phrasal verb

the first one is in a very physical way.

So you might need to catch up with your

friends if you're all walking down the

street in a big group, but some of them

move ahead because you're too busy

nattering, then you might look ahead and

realise they're quite far ahead, and you

have to maybe run to catch up to them, so

catch up in a physical way. I see. Another

way we can use catch up is when we become

equal with someone else.

For example when you're grown up you're

actually becoming taller as the years

go by, you might have an older brother

and after a while you finally become as

tall as him say you catch up to him in

height. You do. Another thing could be if

you're working, maybe someone has done

more work than you

they are further ahead in a particular

task and one day or one night, is more

likely, you you work really hard and you

catch up with them in terms of the work

load. So to catch up academically and

to catch up physically in terms of like

height or to catch up in a very physical

sense to literally get closer to

somebody. Now you can also catch up with

people, so my friends will regularly call

me and say "hey" they don't talk like

that, but "hey when are we going to have a

catch-up" and this means to sit and

discuss, and bring each other up to date

with what's going on, so to learn all

about what they've been doing recently

and just their general news

so you're having a catch-up, bringing

each other up to date.

That's right so you can catch up with

someone and it can also be used as

a noun to have a catch up with them.

Yes so let's meet up and have

catch up. Alright I think that covers all

the catch phrasal verbs that we're

talking about today so that was catch up
