REPORTED SPEECH. Direct Speech and Indirect Speech in English

I’m going to explain everything step by step. Let's get started. Take a look at direct speech. 

모든 것을 단계별로 설명하겠습니다. 시작하자. 직접적인 연설을 살펴보십시오.

The speech is, I am hungry. Next,  there are a few simple rules to follow. 

연설은 '나는 배고프다'입니다. 다음으로 따라야 할 몇 가지 간단한 규칙이 있습니다.

Firstly, we need to include a reporting verb. Secondly, we have to backshift our tenses by one. 

먼저 보고 동사를 포함해야 합니다. 둘째, 시제를 한 단계 뒤로 이동해야 합니다.

Backshift in tenses means changing  the verb tense in reported speech to  

시제의 백시프트는 보고된 음성의 동사 시제를

match the time when it's spoken, so that  the statement is shifted back in time. 

발언 시간과 일치하도록 변경하여 명령문이 시간상 뒤로 이동하는 것을 의미합니다.

And number three, we have to change the pronouns. This sounds very complicated. Now we’re going

If we want to change this sentence into  reported speech, she said that she was hungry.

We've added the reporting verb, she said,  we've back shifted our tense, am, was,

and we've changed the pronouns, I became ‘she’. Another example, “I go to the gym every week",

We added the reporting verb, she said,  we’ve changed our tense, go – went,

and we’ve changes the pronouns, I became she. I'm planning to visit Paris next summer.

She said that she was planning to visit Paris  next summer. We added a reporting verb ‘said’,

we’ve changed our tense, Present Continuous  became Past Continuous am planning – was  

시제, 현재 진행형이 되었습니다.

planning, and I was replaced by she. I was walking along the street. She

said she had been walking along the  street. I hope everything is clear.

We changed Past Continuous –‘was walking’  to Past Perfect Continuous – ‘Had been

explain how to backshift tenses in detail. Now let’s talk about the reporting verbs.

The most common reporting verbs are "say"  and "tell," which become "said" and "told." 

가장 일반적인 보고 동사는 다음과 같습니다. "say" 와 "tell"은 "said"와 "told"가 됩니다.

Please don’t forget to use your reporting  verbs when using reported speech. 

보고된 음성을 사용할 때는 보고 동사를 사용하는 것을 잊지 마세요.

I’ll give you some examples. He  said that he enjoyed the concert. 

몇 가지 예를 들어보겠습니다. 그는 콘서트를 즐겼다고 말했습니다.

You can choose to include "that" or leave it out. He said that he enjoyed the concert. He said  

"that"을 포함하거나 생략할 수 있습니다. 그는 콘서트를 즐겼다고 말했다. 그는

he enjoyed the concert. You can use both options. 

콘서트를 즐겼다고 말했습니다. 두 옵션을 모두 사용할 수 있습니다.

She said she finished the book. She said that she  finished the book. Both sentences are correct.

We can also use the structure ‘say to someone’, My brother said to me that  

say to someone'이라는 구조를 사용할 수도 있습니다. 남동생이 나에게

he was going to study abroad. Or She said to me that she had lost her keys. 

유학을 갈 예정이라고 말했습니다. 또는 그녀는 나에게 열쇠를 잃어버렸다고 말했습니다.

When we use tell, we must always remember  to mention the person we're reporting to. 

Tell을 사용할 때 보고 대상 사람을 언급해야 한다는 점을 항상 기억해야 합니다 .

We use the structure tell  plus who we're reporting to. 

우리는 보고 대상을 알리는 구조를 사용합니다 .

She told me that she enjoyed the movie. They  told us that they had arrived at the airport. 

그녀는 영화를 즐겼다고 말했습니다. 그들은 공항에 도착했다고 말했습니다.

Now I’m going to explain  what backshift in tenses is.

When we use reported speech, we're telling  someone else what someone said. English has

12 main tenses, that can be divided into  three groups: past, present, and future.

We don’t need to change the tense here. The future tenses are also really easy. They

all use will, and will just changes to would. I will come to the party tomorrow. She said

and phrases that we need to change when using  reported speech. Take a look at these examples.

this → that these → those 

이 → 저것 → 저것

now → then, at that moment here → there 

지금 → 그때 그 순간 여기 → 거기 오늘

today → that day ago → before 

→ 그날 전 → 일

a year ago → a year before last night → the previous night 

년 전 → 일 년 전 어젯밤 → 전날 밤

yesterday → the day before, the previous day the day before yesterday → two days before 

어제 → 전날, 전날 그저께 → 이틀 전

tomorrow → the next day, the following day the day after tomorrow → two days later 

내일 → 다음날, 모레 모레 → 이틀 후

You need to remember these phrases so  that you can use indirect speech properly.

이 표현들을 기억해야 간접 화법을 제대로 사용할 수 있습니다.

And what if we have a question in reported speech? “Will you help me?” I said. 

보고된 연설에 질문이 있으면 어떻게 됩니까? "당신은 날 도움이 될 것입니다?" 나는 말했다.

I asked them if they would help me. We used the verb ask, and we changed  

나는 그들에게 나를 도와줄 수 있는지 물었습니다. 동사ask를 사용했고

will to would. Also, we removed a question  mark and used "if" because this is a question. 

will을 would로 바꾸었습니다. 또한 질문이므로 물음표를 삭제하고 'if'를 사용했습니다.

Another example. 'Do you work from home?' he said. He asked me if I worked from home. 

다른 예시. '재택근무를 하시나요?' 그는 말했다. 그는 나에게 집에서 일하는지 물었습니다.

We can also use "wanted to know": He  wanted to know if I worked from home. 

'알고 싶다'를 사용할 수도 있습니다. 그는 내가 집에서 일하는지 알고 싶어했습니다.  다시 한 번

Once again guys. We added a Reporting  Verb: "asked" or "wanted to know."

We changed the Tense: The present simple tense  "work" changed to the past simple tense "worked." 

시제를 변경했습니다. 현재 단순 시제 'work'가 과거 단순 시제 'worked'로 변경되었습니다.

We changed the pronoun: "You" changed to "I" And we Removed the question mark and add "if".

대명사를 변경했습니다. "You"가 "I"로 변경되었습니다. 그리고 물음표를 제거하고 "if"를 추가했습니다.

When we have the present simple  in the direct speech, we change  

현재 단순형이 있으면

it to past simple in the reported speech. For all of these sentences, I'm going to say I,

and you have to change it to Kate said that she. So the first one, I want to live in a big house.

You need to start it with Kate said  that she. I'll give you a few seconds. 

Kate가 말한 것부터 시작해야 합니다 . 몇 초만 시간을 드릴게요.

Kate said that she wanted to live in a big house. 

케이트는 큰 집에서 살고 싶다고 말했습니다.

We shifted back in time.  Present simple to past simple.

우리는 시간을 거슬러 올라갔습니다. 현재 단순에서 과거 단순으로.

When we have the present continuous  tense, we change it to past continuous. 

현재 진행형 시제가 있으면 과거 진행형으로 바꿉니다.

I am writing a script for the video.  I'll give you a couple of seconds. 

저는 영상의 대본을 쓰고 있어요. 몇 초만 시간을 드릴게요.

Kate said that she was writing  a script for the video. 

Kate는 동영상의 대본을 작성 중이라고 말했습니다.

When we have present perfect,  we change it to past perfect. 

현재 완료가 있으면 과거 완료로 변경합니다.

I have finished my breakfast. Kate said  that she had finished her breakfast. 

나는 아침 식사를 마쳤다. 케이트는 아침 식사를 마쳤다고 말했습니다.

When we have past simple in the direct speech, we  change it to past perfect in the reported speech. 

직접 연설에서 단순 과거형을 사용하면 보고된 연설에서 과거 완료형으로 변경합니다.

I cleaned the bathroom. Kate said  that she had cleaned the bathroom. 

나는 화장실을 청소했다. 케이트는 자신이 화장실을 청소했다고 말했습니다.

I had finished my homework before dinner. Kate said that she had finished  

나는 저녁 식사 전에 숙제를 마쳤다. 케이트는

her homework before dinner. Remember that we can’t change the Past Perfect  

저녁 식사 전에 숙제를 마쳤다고 말했습니다. 과거완료 시제는 변경할 수 없다는 점을 기억하세요

tenses. There are no changes in this sentence. Now let’s practice with will and would.

I'll bring a cake to the party. Kate  said she would bring a cake to the party.

But there are some exceptions. With reported speech, we usually don't change the  

tense if the information is ongoing, like a habit. I love my job. Kate said that she loves her job. 

I still love my job. This action is ongoing.  So we might keep it in the present tense.
