Speak English at the Restaurant!

First let’s learn some words and phrases  which you need to use when you’re planning  

먼저 밖에서 식사할 계획을 세울 때 사용해야 하는 몇 가지 단어와 문구를 배워보겠습니다

to have a meal outside. The first one is  a phrasal verb to eat out. If you eat out,  

. 첫 번째는 외식하다의 구동사입니다. 외식을 한다면,

that means you eat outside your home, you go  to a café or restaurant to have a meal. We can  

집 밖에서 식사를 한다는 뜻이고, 카페나 레스토랑에 가서 식사를 한다는 뜻입니다.

also say to dine out, that means to have  dinner outside or to have lunch outside,  

외식하라고 말할 수도 있습니다. 즉, 밖에서 저녁을 먹거나 밖에서 점심을 먹는다는 뜻입니다.

for example – Would you like to dine out together? Now, if you’re going to eat out, or dine out,  

예를 들어 – 같이 외식하시겠습니까? 이제 외식을 하려는 경우, 또는 외식을 할 경우,

before going to a restaurant you need to make  sure if they have a table available for you.  

레스토랑에 가기 전에 테이블이 있는지 확인해야 합니다.

Let’s say you and your friend are going to the  restaurant but you are not sure if they have a  

귀하와 귀하의 친구가 레스토랑에 가는데 친구에게 테이블이 있는지 확실하지 않다고 가정해 보겠습니다

table for you. So what you need to do is to call  the restaurant and… you should make a reservation

or you should book a table. Make a reservation  or book a table means to call the restaurant

and ask them to reserve a table for you Hello, I like to book a table for 2,

for tonight at around 6 pm. Yes, we have a table available for you

And now when you go to a restaurant, the  restaurant may be very expensive or it may also be

reasonably priced. Reasonably priced ? Reasonably  priced means it's not too expensive. It's not too

cheap, but it's not too expensive as well. The  prices are fair. The prices are reasonable.

For example, I checked the menu of that  restaurant, and it’s reasonably priced

예를 들어 그 식당의 메뉴를 확인해 보니 가격이 적당해요.

Now, at the restaurant there  are some people who are working  

지금 그 식당에는 일하는 사람들이 있어요

there. Those people are called the staff. A Waiter/ a Waitress: They bring your food  

. 그 사람들을 직원이라고 합니다. 웨이터/웨이트리스: 음식

and drinks to the table and take your orders. A  server is another name for a waiter or waitress. 

과 음료를 테이블로 가져오고 주문을 받습니다. 서버는 웨이터 또는 웨이트리스의 또 다른 이름입니다.

A Chef: The person who cooks the food. A Host/Hostess: They welcome you at  

요리사: 음식을 요리하는 사람. 호스트/호스트: 문앞에서 당신을 환영

the door and guide you to your table. A Manager: They make sure everything

in the restaurant goes well. Some restaurants have a busser,

also known as a busboy or busgirl. They  clear the table after you finish eating.

Every restaurant has cuisine.

Cuisine is a specific type of  food they serve at the restaurant

It may be Russian cuisine,  European cuisine or Asian cuisine 

러시아 요리, 유럽 요리 또는 아시아 요리일 수 있습니다.

Local cuisine is the specific type of  food you can find in a particular place,  

현지 요리는 특정 장소에서 찾을 수 있는 특정 유형의 음식입니다.

for example in America, burgers and  hot dogs are their local cuisine. 

예를 들어 미국에서는 버거와 핫도그가 향토 요리.

Also, there is a type of food which is called  Continental food. Continental food is European  

또한, 유럽식 음식이라고 불리는 음식 종류도 있습니다 . 유럽식은

food made in Europe, Italian food, Spanish  food, French food, German food, and so on. 

유럽에서 만든 유럽식, 이탈리아식, 스페인 식, 프랑스식, 독일식 등을 말합니다.

And there is a type of food which is  called Oriental food. It is Asian cuisine:  

그리고 동양음식이라는 음식도 있어요. 아시아 요리입니다.

Food from countries in Asia, including  Chinese, Japanese and Thai food. 

중국, 일본, 태국 음식을 포함한 아시아 국가의 음식입니다.

What type of food do you prefer?  I really like Continental food. 

어떤 종류의 음식을 선호하시나요? 나는 유럽식 음식을 정말 좋아해요.

Another type of food is Vegetarian  food. Vegetarian food is a type of  

또 다른 유형의 음식은 채식주의 음식입니다. 채식주의 음식은

food that is made without any meat or fish. And there is Vegan food. Vegan food is food  

고기나 생선을 사용하지 않고 만든 음식의 일종입니다. 그리고 비건 음식도 있어요. 비건 음식은

that doesn't come from animals. It means  no meat, dairy, eggs, or any other animal

products. Instead, it includes fruits, vegetables,  grains, nuts, seeds, and plant-based alternatives.

Now let’s see how to use what  we have learned in a dialogue.

Now when you are at the restaurant, the first  thing you need to do is to ask the menu. It

is a list of meals that a restaurant has. Many restaurants do not offer a menu on paper,

they just have a QR code on the table, you need  to scan it with your smartphone, to see the menu.

Also some restaurants have the drinks  menu that includes the list of drinks

or beverages. Beverages are different  types of drinks such as water, juice,

tea, coffee, soda, and alcoholic  beverages like beer and wine.

Sometimes you can see a section on the  menu which is called Today’s specials 

때로는 메뉴에서 오늘의 특별 메뉴라는 섹션을 볼 수 있습니다.

It is the meal that the chef has prepared  specifically for today. It’s the dish they  

셰프가 오늘을 위해 특별히 준비한 식사입니다.

do not usually have on the menu. It is  something they have cooked for today. 

일반적으로 메뉴에 없는 요리입니다. 오늘은 그들이 준비한 것입니다.

When you’re having a meal at the  restaurant, it may consist of 3 parts: 

레스토랑에서 식사할 때 식사는 세 부분으로 구성될 수 있습니다.

1. Starter: A small dish to begin your meal. 2. Main course: The biggest part of your meal. 

1. 전채 요리: 식사를 시작하는 작은 접시입니다. 2. 메인 코스: 식사의 가장 큰 부분입니다.

3. Dessert: A sweet food you have at the end. You can also have side dishes: These are  

3. 디저트: 마지막에 먹는 달콤한 음식입니다. 반찬도 드실 수 있습니다. 감자

extra foods you can order to go with  your main dish, like fries or salad.

튀김이나 샐러드 등 메인 요리와 함께 주문할 수 있는 추가 음식입니다.

When you're ordering a salad,  you can also ask the server,  

샐러드를 주문할 때 서버에게 '

Can I have the dressing on the side? Dressing?  What does that mean? Dressing is a sauce that  

드레싱을 따로 곁들여도 될까요?'라고 물어볼 수도 있습니다. 드레싱? 그게 무슨 뜻이에요? 드레싱은

you put on salads to add flavor. The phrase ‘Can I have the dressing  

샐러드에 넣어 풍미를 더하는 소스입니다. '드레싱을 따로 먹어도 되나요

on the side?’ means you want the sauce served  separately so you can add as much as you like.

?'라는 문구는 소스를 따로 제공하여 원하는 만큼 추가할 수 있다는 뜻입니다.

Now imagine a situation where you're at  a restaurant with a friend. Your friend  

이제 친구와 함께 식당에 있는 상황을 상상해 보세요 . 친구가

orders something delicious, and when the  waiter comes to take your order, you say,  

맛있는 것을 주문했는데 웨이터가 주문을 받으러 오면 당신은 친구가

I want the same meal that he ordered. Or you can  simply say - ‘Make it two’. Make it two, please.

주문한 것과 같은 음식을 먹고 싶다고 말합니다. 아니면 간단히 'Make it two'라고 말씀하셔도 됩니다. 2개로 해주세요.

Now let’s see how to use all  these phrases in a dialogue.

이제 이 모든 문구를 대화에서 어떻게 사용하는지 살펴보겠습니다 .

Now when you’re having your meal and you  need something, you may have some requests. 

이제 식사를 하다가 뭔가가 필요할 때 몇 가지 요청이 있을 수 있습니다.

You call the waiter or the waitress  but you need to do it in a polite way. 

웨이터나 웨이트리스에게 전화를 걸지만 정중하게 해야 합니다.

For example. Could we have  some extra napkins, please? 

예를 들어. 냅킨을 좀 더 주시겠어요? 테이블에

Could you bring some salt and  pepper to the table, please? 

소금과 후추를 좀 가져다 주시겠어요 ?

When you notice your glass of water is  empty and you would like it refilled,  

물컵이 비어 있는 것을 발견 하고 다시 채우고 싶으면 다음과 같이

you can say - Excuse me, could  I please have some more water?

말할 수 있습니다. - 실례합니다. 물을 좀 더 드실 수 있나요?

Part 3. When you’re going to leave When your meal is finished and you  

3부. 떠날 때 식사를 마치고 비용을

want to pay for it, you can say: Can I have the bill, please? 

지불하고 싶을 때 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다. 청구서를 받아 주시겠어요?

Could you bring us the bill, please? Or May I get the check, please?

청구서를 가져다 주실 수 있나요? 아니면 수표를 받을 수 있을까요?

If you want to divide the cost between you  and your friend, you can ask to split the  

귀하와 친구가 비용을 나누고 싶다면 청구서를 분할해 달라고 요청할 수 있습니다

bill. That means you will pay for your meal  and your friend will pay for their meal. 

. 이는 귀하가 식사비를 지불 하고 친구가 식사비를 지불한다는 의미입니다.

After finishing our dinner, we asked  the waiter if we could split the bill. 

저녁 식사를 마친 후 우리는 웨이터에게 계산서를 나누어도 되는지 물었습니다.

Another great phrase which is commonly used -  It’s on me. It’s on me. What does that mean? 

일반적으로 사용되는 또 다른 멋진 문구는 바로 It's on me입니다. 나 한테 달려있어. 그게 무슨 뜻이에요?

If you want to treat your friend to  a meal or buy something for them,  

친구에게 식사를 대접하거나 뭔가를 사주고 싶다면

you can say "It's on me." This means you're  going to pay for it and they don't have to.

"It's on me"라고 말하면 됩니다. 즉, 귀하는 비용을 지불해야 하며 상대방은 그럴 필요가 없다는 의미입니다.

Now let’s watch a conversation  where a customer is paying the bill.
