English Learners: Get Fluent, THEN Speak!

right all right let's see if this is working I am  Drew Badger the founder of englishanyone.com and  

the English fluency guide welcome uh I have just  reinstalled the YouTube app again and we'll see

works this time uh but hopefully uh looks like  we're coming in so far I'll keep an eye on the  

chat on the computer as well to make sure it's  coming in uh but hello and welcome this should  

be an entertaining video uh as usual we be talking  about fluency but I thought uh I would answer some  

questions that people have because people all  right it looks like yes good work all right  

dran uh Jacqueline nice to see you there chat is  working now and it looks like yeah they updated  

that again all right joelan nice to see you there  NBA 2K oh my goodness NBA 2K is in the house all

right we'll give a moment for people to

arrive and then we'll get started all right uh but  yeah I'm glad to see chat is working over there  

and yeah now I don't have an issue we'll see what  happens when they keep updating the app though  

all right uh Haley or H Holly if I'm pronouncing  that correctly let me know uh hopefully uh sound  

should be coming in as well I think some people  maybe were saying let's see yeah we should be okay  

should be coming in loud and clear Julian nice to  see you there again all right uh so what I wanted  

to do in this video is actually begin with a story  and this is something I shared with subscribers  

uh a couple of days ago uh and this was just about  me when I was sitting at a cafe so I'm in Nagasaki  

Japan right now and I was sitting at a cafe this  is just a uh just like a local Starbucks uh and  

I'm sitting there uh I was I was sitting there  looking at I don't know just doing some work I  

had my computer out I was doing some work uh and  a Japanese guy sitting next to me was watching  

something on a tablet so an iPad or whatever I  didn't look very closely at it was but it looked  

like he was watching a movie or TV show I didn't  want to be rude and try to stare at him and figure  

out what he's watching uh but I just noticed he  was doing that so I am uh I was sitting there  

working and he's doing that and after a while I  notice he starts moving his hand very quickly in  

front of the screen so he's just he's like this  maybe every few seconds and at first I thought  

oh wow that must be some kind of motion control  technology or something he has on his tablet so he  

doesn't have to touch the tablet so I'm thinking  wow that that's like a really cool idea I thought  

he was uh you know like swiping something trying  to control the video maybe fast forwarding or  

something like that uh and so I'm watching him do  this for a couple of minutes while I'm uh while  

I'm talking or just just doing work on my computer  and I notice after a while that there's a little  

fly buzzing around him and after I noticed the uh  fly so I see this little fly buzzing around and I  

and I realize ah there's nothing special about  the iPad or the tablet he's using there's just  

a fly he's trying to shoe the fly away so I I was  I I I saw that uh and I was just so I don't know I  

I laughed I laughed inside I didn't want to laugh  outside I like laugh you know because he's sitting  

right there uh listening to me or you know if he's  he can hear me if I if I were to laugh um but I  

started immediately writing that story I just told  that story as it happened to uh people on just the  

the subscribers that followed me via email and  uh and I thought it was such a great story even  

just by itself it's just like a funny short story  but it's a really important story and that's the  

reason I thought uh to share it with people the  reason I thought uh it was an important story it  

is an important story is because it teaches us a  lot about how we learn and how we get fluent and  

how we understand information so if I were to redo  that story imagine I'm sitting there and I see him  

moving his hand like that I could just stop and  ask the guy hey are you uh why are you moving your  

hand like that are you using some kind of motion  control technology uh on your on your iPad and  

I was curious because I don't have anything like  that I thought oh wow that's cool you don't have  

to touch the screen you just move your hands it's  like like that old Tom Cruz movie Minority Report  

you know when people do these like technical  things they're moving their fingers in front of  

the screen like there's something there but really  there isn't so I could have asked him that or  

I could have asked him if he had a problem or he  just likes moving his hands there's lots of things  

I could have guessed about what was happening in  that situation and what that means is that usually  

the first time we see something we're not 100%  certain about what it means or what's happening or  

the reason why it's happening or other information  like that but as we get more information that's  

when we start developing more confidence and so  immediately once I saw that fly buzzing around uh  

then I could think oh okay okay now I understand  the whole picture I understand what's going on all  

right hopefully this makes sense uh but the reason  I I share that with people is because again this  

works exactly the same way with how we learn so  when you're trying to learn another language uh  

instead of trying to force yourself to speak this  is what I I could have done I could have I could  

have just start asking him questions about that I  say hey like do you have some kind of cool motion  

technology and then he would just say like hio  like it's just like a fly you know buzzing around  

or whatever and so I I could have just started  speaking and I would have been mistaken okay I  

would have been mistaken but uh as I just relaxed  and got more information about the situation then  

I was completely in understanding I understood  exactly what was happening and then I was able  

to talk about it okay so uh the moral here  or the lesson for you as a learner for me as  

a learner learner of languages uh all of us who  are trying to learn is that instead of trying to  

force yourself to speak like the title of this  video so usually what people think is that you  

get fluent by speaking and in that case like I  could have learned what was happening by like  

asking that guy questions or I could have just  like I did just gotten more information and then  

that's how I was able to understand what he was  doing all right so when you're trying to learn  

a language you don't have to force yourself to  speak to develop fluency you actually develop  

fluency by getting more information so as you  learn and you really feel more confident that  

you'll use something correctly that's when you're  able to use it now I'll tell another quick story  

this happened to me actually last night and this  is something I have not told anyone else about yet  

uh but I was yes so Lucas has it exactly speaking  is an outcome so you can you certainly can force  

yourself to speak but why would you want to it's  not that speaking develops fluency speaking is the  

outcome just like Lucas said speaking is the  outcome of understanding once you understand  

something very well you feel confident that you  will use it correctly and that's when you speak  

so yesterday perfect example of this I came back  from work and my older daughter Arya comes into  

my room and she says Dad what does unify mean  I'll write the word up for people here unify

now instead of just telling her the answer  which you could do uh I'm always asking  

her questions about that to see if she can  figure that out because I want to give her  

more information so really she can discover  the meaning of something herself because if  

she does that then she really feels confident  she remembers it much more easily and she can  

use it fluently in conversations so she said  uh dad what does unify mean and I said well  

well where did you hear that where did you hear  that word and she told me about a TV show and I  

said okay well what was happening in that TV  show uh there's a cartoon she likes called  

miraculous ladybug maybe you've heard of that  show anyway uh she said she had heard it from  

that show and I said well what was happening  when that happened and she said well uh some  

characters were kind of coming together and she  actually moved her hands in this way and I said  

look look that's it right there you've got it  to unify something we we got like a couple of  

different things there coming together to become  one all right to unify something and so just to go  

a little bit further with that I said what other  things do you know that start with uni have you  

heard any other words do you know any other  words that start with uni and she said oh uh

unicor yeah so that's a a horse  you know like a unicorn a horse  

with one horn a unicorn or  you could have a she also

mentioned a unicycle so a unicycle you've probably  seen one of these before here's a little seat uh  

and there's the wheel like that down at the bottom  a unicycle unicycle so this one has just one wheel  

one wheel so different from a bu bicycle that has  two two wheels okay so this is what I'm doing uh  

with my kids at home it's the same thing I do  in my lessons or on these videos with you but I  

really thought just that fly story was a really  great example uh of how people actually develop  

fluency and when you think about it like I again  I could have asked lots of questions of this guy  

I could have spoke you know I could have I could  have spoken to him and said something uh asking  

him questions what do you think about this like  oh here's an interesting thing but if I'm not  

feeling confident about that uh Universe another  good example if I'm not feeling confident about  

that why would I speak all right so an interesting  thing about people and this is not just language  

Learners who are learning as a second language you  know typical people learning languages this is all  

of us most people really all of us we don't like  making mistakes in front of other people this is  

native speakers children it doesn't matter and  this is why we really need a silent period where  

we're trying to get more information so we feel  confident about something so you can of course  

force yourself uh to speak if you don't mind  making mistakes but most people would rather  

uh actually start improving the way they speak  by understanding the language better first okay  

hopefully this makes sense uh one last thing I  will give just as another example of this story  

uh you if you heard me a little bit you could go  back and listen again but I'm going to retell that  

fly story so I'm going to tell it one more time  I'm going to change it a little bit uh and this is  

just a quick tip an additional tip in this video  about how to communicate and express yourself  

better and this is when you're telling stories  even about something that happened in the past  

you can and should tell it as if it's happening  right now and this is just a more interesting  

engaging thing like I'm describing the story as  if it's happening right now so this is perfectly  

fine to do you will hear natives doing this all  the time and often it gets people more interested  

in the story because it makes you feel like it's  happening right now so if you're ever maybe you  

maybe you I don't know you're not feeling very  confident you're not yet confident about some  

past tense or describing something you can just  talk about it excuse me you can just talk about  

it like it's happening right now so let me give  you an example with that same fly story and then  

I'll go back and answer some questions over  here first let me get a drink my uh delicious

water my uh my older daughter AR is actually sick  right now but I not uh we'll see maybe I get sick  

in the future who knows uh but anyway so here I  was like here I am uh sitting here at the cafe  

and this guy is sitting next to me it's just  a Japanese guy sitting next to me looking at  

a tablet and I'm looking at this guy and I think  oh that's interesting he's he's you know watching  

a video or something but he's moving his hand like  this every so often so every so often every every  

so often so every so often and you will hear this  as often or often you will hear both of those so  

every so often he moves his hand like this and  I'm thinking to myself so I'm thinking to myself  

gee interesting I wonder if he has some kind of  motion control functionality on his device and  

so I'm watching that as I'm doing my work so I'm  working at the same time I'm just sitting in a  

chair next to that guy he's looking at his tablet  I'm looking at my computer but I see him continue  

to move his hand like that and I'm really curious  about why he's doing that and after a while I see  

oh there's just a little fly buzzing around him  and he's just trying to move the Flyway all right  

so here I am I I'm now okay like I I I thought  it was like an interesting cool thing about the  

device I was I was almost about to ask him so  I I was almost about to ask him uh about what  

that was but then I saw the fly and I answered my  own question okay so that was just an example uh  

I've already told the story now twice uh but you  can again you hear I'm telling this if you want  

to tell a story and make it just sound more uh  interesting just like it's happening right now  

people will want to listen to it more if they feel  wow look at that it actually feels more like it's  

happening right now rather than you describing  it in the past so that's another great way for  

you to express yourself in a simple way without  having to think about what tense am I using all  

right now I'm going to go back and look at chat uh  but I didn't have like a lot I wanted to cover in  

this video I really wanted to just talk about this  idea and so we can answer lots of questions if you  

have time uh if you have any you'd like to know  about this idea uh or if anyone disagrees with  

this let me know so I know lots of people like  some people will say hey so so we should not speak  

how do we improve our pronunciation or whatever  uh that's probably the most common question I  

get about this but in general your pronunciation  improves as you listen to many different examples  

of different speakers and so if you only listen  to one teacher you are going to sound more like  

that that teacher but typically that teacher will  not be speaking the way they would normally speak  

in a regular conversation so just like this video  here uh it's not really the way I speak in normal  

conversations so I am using a lot of the same  vocabulary but in a regular conversation I know  

the probably you know the native speaker I can I  can change the way I speak I can speak faster I  

can speak less clearly and I can use uh actually  completely different vocabul like idioms and slang  

and movie references and things like that so  that's how I make kind of better communication  

with the person I'm speaking with I have to know  something about them or I learn something about  

them and then I start speaking I can actually give  you another another quick story about this uh so I  

met uh a very lovely couple um it was like a guy  and his wife traveling uh they live in uh Tokyo I  

think uh but they're from the United States and  so they're just out here visiting for a little  

bit uh but they were here and they were actually  this is a different Starbucks actually uh but I  

I was there sitting uh I put my my stuff down and  I went to get uh some here I'll I'll tell you the  

story as if it's happening in the present uh  so I I got my uh my drink I'm standing there  

and I walk back and I see them sitting there and  now it's her and her husband there and I come up  

and I say oh they're making a all sit together and  then I sit next to the lady I said they're making  

us all sit together so the joke is that like you  know there's it's it's we're in Japan and like  

we are the only foreigners uh in the restaurant  and so I was just making a joke just to start the  

conversation so I say uh oh they're they're making  us sit together and the lady said oh really I said  

no no I'm kidding you know but we we were able  to start a conversation that way a very lovely  

couple and I start having a you know just a nice  chat with them for maybe 30 minutes or so before  

they went out I gave them some recommendations  about things to do in Nagasaki and they had a  

nice time anyway it's another quick story for you  but just an example of how you can tell something  

uh in the present even though it happened in the  past all right so now before I lose my train of  

thought here uh again about pronunciation remember  that the way you learn is the way you speak and  

so so if you have a a single example like you're  only learning from one person especially if that  

person is a teacher then you're not going to  be prepared for real conversations and you're  

not really going to hear lots of examples of how  natives would pronounce things so remember there's  

not just one way to pronounce things because you  will hear different people with different voices  

different accents different pitches some people  have a high voice or a low voice and so as you  

get more of those examples you will naturally find  an English-speaking voice that's right for you and  

then you feel more confident about pronouncing  something so in my case like if I come to Japan  

and the first person I hear uh like say good  morning to me like is a or just like even just  

says hello uh is a kid and so that kid says uh  and I said uh I I didn't really hear what he said  

but if I start using that with other people they  they might think there's something wrong with me  

so he didn't say anything incorrectly he's just  you know pronouncing it casually and and quickly  

like a like a Japanese kid would do um oh look at  that there goes MC nice to see you there uh and  

so when I'm when I'm talking with this uh when I'm  talking with this kid if that's the only example I  

get then that's what I think the whole language is  like so instead I get lots of examples from lots  

of different people and I hear oh okay so you can  say k or k you can hear it more clearly maybe some  

people are being a little bit more polite and even  the same person can pronounce the word different  

ways depending on the situation so they might be  more casually with their friends or more formal at  

work something like that and so as you get lots of  these different examples that's how you get fluent  

all right so this applies to your grammar your  vocabulary and your pronunciation and listening  

even if you don't speak and when you feel more  confident that's when you can start saying things  

all right so remember uh if you want to start  speaking before you feel confident you certainly  

can nobody is stopping you from doing that but  you will feel a lot more confident you will enjoy  

learning the language and speaking the language  much more if you get lots of input first and then  

speak all right okay let me go back through uh  comments over here and I see lots of comments from

not working but most people don't complain about  it so it seems like it should be fine I don't know  

why uh it would be working for some people but  not for others but it's the same I'll even show  

you the microphone if I hopefully I don't break  anything if I move this around this is what I'm

using just to just to prove there is in fact a  microphone in front of me and and a large one a

when someone tells a story English what type  of sentences are recommended to use simple past  

present or past perfect uh so just like I gave  examples before you can tell a story in different  

ways or in different tenses even if it's something  that happened in the past so you will often hear  

people say something like so here I am or so there  I was and they will begin the story like that so  

just to get you more excited about it so there I  was sitting there talking uh with this person and  

like a dog tried to bite me all right so there I  was or here I was or here I am doing something I  

can tell it in the past uh or the present either  way is fine I suppose I could also talk about in  

the future that might sound a little bit weird  but uh you could do that all right George nice

month ago I visited London it's quite challenging  to understand the people there because they speak  

quickly it can be a bit frustrating but encourages  me to practice even harder yep that's great always  

let that uh be a a challenge a stepping stone not  a hurdle you know so you can feel more confident  

about doing that remember if you are traveling or  if you're going to be spending more time with a  

certain kind of speaker then get more input from  those kinds of speakers so you're more prepared  

for that so this is the kind of thing we do  in fluent for life like people who are going  

to be living in a certain place or you want  to be speaking with a certain kind of speaker  

we prepare you for that uh Dr s says you are the  best teacher that I've ever seen wow well that's  

too that's too kind over there uh yep m phone is  working properly Kazi Brazil the plot twist yes  

again from Dominican Republic King j--'s pilot  has the best chance to save the people of North  

Korea huh I don't know if that's a question but  thank you for that information let's see we'll  

see what it we'll see what the pilot does uh to  understand brsh shingler sometimes is challenging  

yes all right VES my skills and language seem  so you would say they seem to disappear if I  

stop listening to Native speakers yeah it's it's  an interesting thing uh sometimes I will forget  

English like I'm speaking in this video but  I don't spend a lot of time speaking English  

during my day actually don't spend a lot of time  speaking most of the time uh but you can sort of  

forget things and it's good to get refreshed with  more information as you learn uh D says greetings  

from Serbia nice to see you there what someone  else has that big hand that little pink hand too  

that's nice G how can I find speaking voice uh  I how can I find my speaking voice I watch and  

listen to many different speakers well you would  find something that that feels appropriate for you  

and you can try out different voices so for me  like I could be trying to speak Japanese and I  

could try to sound like a samurai or a little kid  or I don't know a woman or something there's lots  

of different things I could do but my my typical  way of speaking is is like what's appropriate for  

me I'm not really trying to sound you know it's  and you you also have to remember that like the  

inside of my mouth the actual equipment I have is  going to be different from a Japanese person so  

it's going to sound a little bit different too  and this is an interesting thing you can test  

yourself on this I should make a video about this  uh but even native English speakers in the United  

States if you close your eyes and listen to them  you can tell if it's like an Asian woman or black  

guy or white guy or whatever you can usually tell  the difference in the way their voices because  

we're physically different like that all right  uh let's see little white thank you teacher uh

welcome uh let's see David from Boston Elder says  how's it drew yep the people say the same word  

differently in different situations is explain the  hard understanding without listening a lot yeah uh  

let's see yoyou says I genuinely think you're the  smartest person on the internet yeah I don't think  

that that can't possibly be true now maybe if I  made the internet also that might be something to  

think about but I'm definitely not uh and another  thing about me it takes me a long time to figure  

stuff out if I have a good teacher who can explain  something to me and it's like ah okay now I get it  

but often I'm trying to like learn something or do  something that other people don't have the answer  

to and it just it takes me a really long time  to figure it out uh even explaining something  

as simple as like get fluent then speak uh and  it takes a while to explain that and I've I've  

gone over the years of of trying to give people  different ways of understanding that but that's  

really what's going on um but it's I think it's  mostly because we get all of this information from  

from school and from other teachers uh where it's  saying like you have to speak in order to do this  

but if people thought about that wait a minute I'm  I'm I am I'm speaking but I'm not really getting  

more fluent and so the fluency really comes as  you understand the language better and so you  

can do that nice and comfortably and then you can  become uh you know more I guess like find it more  

enjoyable in conversations understand things more  uh and then you will have a lot more fun when you  

speak uh your mic is working good today thanks  a lot yeah I don't the microphone it's the same  

thing I do every time I don't know coming soon  just one day it's amazing can't wait to play  

with it uh Call of Duty Call of Duty 20 coming  soon xdl you got a lot of just like random random  

news today all right let's see uh handsome and  friendly says blue SK okay all right well glad  

to be handsome all right which language do you  speak at home with your children or wife uh I  

speak it depends on who I'm speaking with usually  I will use English at home because my kids are in  

a mostly Japanese environment for most of the day  and so when I when I come home that's my time to  

to talk with them and make sure they get lots of  input you know I get to uh answer their questions  

or I just sometimes they will be playing and I  will just talk with them even if they're not it's  

not like a conversation I'm just explaining things  or telling them a story or something so it I I  

try to give them lots of input uh as they learn  but it was great because Arya my older daughter  

again uh I tell lots of stories about her because  she's just you know learning things uh already at  

a higher level uh and I was excited she used  the word which so she was explaining something  

and then used like a clause in the middle of  the sentence with which I don't remember what  

exactly she said but she was like yeah this is the  person who does this thing uh which really helps  

or something and I thought wow look at that very  good so you know the the lots of little things  

like that and I give her lots of Praise And I say  oh that's like a great and great work on on using  

that and obviously they feel uh more better or not  more better but they feel better uh about using  

things as they understand them better and so Arya  I'm always telling them like yeah if you uh if you  

if you don't understand something you want to get  the answer to that because that understanding will  

stop you from expressing yourself actually another  quick story about Arya uh we were I think reading  

a book or something and we were talking about  different tenses not like a language lesson but  

I was just explaining okay like this happened in  the past and you know we're doing something right  

now we call that the present I think we were  we were actually reading uh A Christmas Carol  

so that story about the the ghosts of Christmas  Past and Christmas present and Christmas future  

or the spirit of Christmas whatever um and I  said well you can talk about these different  

times but isn't it interesting that it's always  now so we we actually never arrive at a different  

moment there's always just right now and she she  really liked that idea for some reason and then  

a few days later she brought that up again uh  while we were talking about something and she  

was like yeah but it's always now so I thought  that was I thought that was entertaining but  

it's nice to see nice to see her her learning  over there maybe when she gets older we will  

play some Call of Duty or something together I  don't know all right let's see uh I can't read  

the hongu but uh I'm am Korean I'm a beginner in  English I'll learn hard all right well hopefully  

if you can understand what I'm saying right  now you're probably not a beginner but also  

uh I don't want to you don't have to learn hard  or like practice hard it's really just sitting  

back and relaxing and getting the input you need  to speak and so if you don't understand something  

you don't need to work harder to understand it  the teacher actually needs to work harder to  

make it uh easier to understand okay so again as  I mentioned the title of this video you should be  

uh learning first getting fluent first and then  you speak so don't worry about putting pressure  

on yourself or trying to speak maybe you have  to or you just want to that's okay but if you  

don't have to then just relax and get fluent  get more information until you feel you're  

really confident you really understand something  and then you can start speaking it and of course  

if you have questions just like Arya was asking  you you can do that as well let's see Opa carile  

if I'm pronouncing that correctly your course has  subtitles uh yes so we've got subtitles in all of  

our programs uh fluent for life also has uh so  we give you the full transcripts of everything  

and uh we built a a specific app that lets you uh  basically we created some interactive uh subtitles  

or transcripts below videos so you can click on  a like a word and it will jump to that section of  

the video or you can repeat certain sections of  the video or uh do quite a few different things  

that make your learning more fun and interesting  but yes so we got subtitles and a lot more that  

we created for the program so Amur gray perfect  teacher glad to hear it Elder says you do nothing  

in a school oh really nothing you do nothing in a  school I don't know what that's referring to let's  

see teacher your course to get fluently in English  Ty subtitles yes I think I answer that right all  

right xdl again let's make a conspiracy well it's  not a conspiracy if you tell everybody you can't  

just post a comment and you got to keep it quiet  you know conspiracy whole point is to be but I do  

like that little it's like a ghost a ghost face or  something put some land mine on the ground get a  

shotgun ready and be a camper in cood just kidding  oh my goodness game over yes I used to uh actually  

used to do back in the day so a long time ago when  I was um so I was in college and I used to play  

Counter Strike I think I played counter- strike  too much but uh but yes and I I will occasionally  

play some uh play some games to relax right now  I'm actually playing not like right now right now  

but uh lately I have been playing a video game  let's see you can guess what it is xdl let's  

see if you can guess what it is all right but if  anybody has any questions let me know but again  

the general idea is that you should be learning  things and feeling confident first and then I CS2  

yeah so again you should feel confident about  things first Mario no I'm not playing Mario uh  

and then speak yeah you got it so venicius has it  exactly yet so uh when do you know if I'm prepared  

it's a subconscious process no it's actually it's  very conscious actually so if I can draw I don't I  

I I really want to make this sound as simple as  possible because it is simple I'm not it's it's  

not like a complicated thing uh you need to think  about but uh usually what happens uh is you are  

learning you are learning something and as you get  more examples like the first time you hear it uh I  

will use the story I told earlier in this video  so I'm sitting there uh like here's let me use

it the red so I'm sitting here uh and this uh the  Japanese guy is sitting next to me he's looking  

at his tablet and I'm on my my computer and I'm  like you know looking over at him watching what  

he's doing and the first time I see him he kind of  swipes his hand like that so there the first time  

I see him do that I think oh that's interesting I  wonder what he's doing over there I didn't really  

think much about it maybe you know some people  just move their hand uh but he kept doing it so  

he did it like another time and a third time  and a fourth and he he continued to do that  

thing and each one of these times each time he  does that it's like an example that's giving me  

more information about what he's doing so at first  I don't really notice anything different and I'm  

I'm just making guesses that's all I can do if I  don't ask him what he's doing so I can only guess  

what he's doing and that's why the first guess I  had was there must be some kind of motion control  

on on his device so maybe I can't see it there's  some little thing on his tablet he can swipe his  

hand like that and maybe pause the video or skip  something or fast forward or whatever I don't know  

what he's doing and so each one of these times  I'm I'm making a guess I'm trying to get more  

information I'm still doing my work over here but  I'm you know noticing him doing this and it's I'm  

curious about it because I think well I wonder if  he maybe there's something cool in like I could  

put that on my tablet as well or whatever but  uh after like after he did that for like a few  

minutes really like it was it was kind of a long  process and at that same time I start typing the  

story to subscribers because I thought that was  like an interesting story and so I'm doing that  

and I'm like why is this I'm trying to figure out  what this guy is doing over here I don't know why  

I was so interested I should have been doing some  work but I'm you know I'm typing the story of him  

doing that but then after let's just say it's like  the 10th time over here I see the fly so I now now  

I notied there's you know like like a little  fly buzzing around around the computer and so  

when I see that ah okay finally this is the aha  moment so it's very it's a very conscious thing  

you actually feel it like when I'm telling the  story you feel it at that same time too so it's  

not like a subconscious thing where you where you  just like keep getting more information really the  

point is just to get more information until you  feel confident about it now the interesting thing  

about this process is that you don't have to have  like 10 examples of something if if this had been  

the first thing if I saw him move his hand and  I saw the fly at the same time then I don't need  

all these examples over here like right from the  first example I know he's moving his hand because  

he's just Shing a Flyway to shoe a Flyway okay so  don't think about it as I need to review something  

20 times it's just how quickly can I figure out  that information so my job as a teacher is to try  

to give you this as quickly as possible I try to  make something as easy to understand as possible  

and it might take a few examples to really make it  strong in your mind but if I can do that quickly  

then you will feel confident you will become  fluent and then you will speak okay so that's  

really the the process like that so we start uh  like just giving you more information if I can  

give it to you right on the first try then great  if not whatever I will try again and again until I  

do it but you will know it works when you feel it  and that's that aha moment of understanding where  

ah okay now I get it now I feel confident about  using that thing but you notice I'm not speaking  

during this time I'm I'm just being quiet I'm  getting more information of course you can ask  

questions if you have maybe you want to try to  help this process out or say like I understand  

maybe this point but I don't understand that one  so you can you kind of work with the teacher if  

you can but a good teacher can just help you  understand things very quickly and that's the  

point is really just like I'm teaching my kids I'm  trying to help you understand something the way my  

daughters do so I don't want to just tell you the  answer when my daughter comes to me and says what  

does this word mean I think okay let me before I  just tell her the answer let me try to help her  

figure that out because if she understands that  process she can also do that uh when she finds  

other words that she doesn't know okay so it's a  very conscious process you will notice it and the  

the the confusion or the lack of understanding  excuse me that's also a conscious process so  

it's very conscious you can feel it when you  don't know something and then you feel it when  

you do know something and so there's immediately  like like it's there's like a switch there's like  

literally a like a switch in your brain where like  ah okay now I got it like the connection is made  

you understand something and now you can use it  so the point is you don't need to force yourself  

to speak before that happens so you should feel  confident about speaking and then you speak all  

right uh let's see uh so Dr let's play CS2 yes yes  I haven't played also my internet is not great so  

I don't I don't play any like Co-op or multiplayer  or things like that uh I did many years ago I  

would play like smash BRS or something or even  I could do that now just on like local local  

co-op rather than uh trying to play people online  because I would always my ping would be too high  

and I would get I would get kicked off the server  but back when when I was in college that was a lot  

of fun CU we had a strong internet connection  there all right uh Jacqueline with the lovely  

starry eyes over there gam yesterday I watched a  video I didn't know I think a radio show in that  

video you spoke Japanese pretty well I'm happy  to hear you got a YouTube logo from YouTube yeah  

yeah that YouTube gives you for Milestones like  100,000 scrip subscribers or a million subscribers  

or whatever uh so they asked me to bring that and  show that to them Mar says James is it wrong to  

say congratulation upon I don't know who James  is but uh can't think of a situation when you  

would say congratulations upon something we  would say congratulations on something though  

congratulations on something congratulations on  your new job or congratulations on your wedding so  

I'm congratulating you about something all right  uh abek says when I have to listen to another I  

can't be able to understand but I listen to and  I completely understand yes if you're talking  

about when you're listen to me if that's what  you mean yes so I'm I'm being intentionally  

easy to understand so I'm making my voice nice  and clear and smooth and easy to understand and  

I'm also not using lots of uh idioms or phrasal  verbs and things that that you would not know so  

I'm I'm intentionally doing that whatas says Ohio  nice to see you there good morning tuasa where do  

you live what what uh what prefecture are you  in are you in Tokyo or let me know let me know  

where you are I will actually be traveling I'll  be traveling next week uh so this video we will  

probably do a video uh next Friday so it not  be next Thursday but next Friday he can I ask  

how many kids can pick up three languages and uh  how how kids can pick up three languages and kids  

speak fluently or do they have an advantage or  that's not true well there I mean you can if you  

if you want to just compare language learning  between adults and children I actually wrote a  

whole article about this that you can find on our  site that talks about the advantages that adults  

have uh but the main disadvantage adults have is  that they learn English as a second language so  

they're hurting themselves by how they learn not  because of who they are all right let me say that  

again they're hurting themselves because of how  they learn not because of who they are so it's  

not because they're older like you know 30 years  old or 50 or however however old the person is  

the point is if you learn a language as a second  language it's going to cause you to hesitate and  

struggle and and have difficulty communicating uh  and children the only way children can learn is by  

getting uh like the language being understandable  like I talk about in my videos so if you think  

about like me teaching a child who only knows  English I can only teach them more things in  

English I would have to use uh if I want to  like you give them translations or something  

like that uh then uh it would be I mean I could  do that I suppose but that would be training them  

to think about translations rather than just  helping them understand so what you should be

doing and it doesn't matter if you were an adult  or a child or if it's your native language or any  

other language you have the English as a we'll  just we'll just use English for the example here  

so English as a second language example so most  people they have a native language here and then  

they're trying to learn through their native  language to learn English but what you should  

be doing if you're learning English as a first  language is you just have the English language  

and you're connecting English with situations so  one example of this like when you're teaching a  

child is just the very simple uh visual like  oh look at that you got a red marker and I can  

compare red marker with a black marker or a blue  marker or something else and with this example I  

can make it it easy for the child to understand  all in English just like you can understand it  

in English as well red marker black marker blue  marker all right or if I do it in Japanese like  

Akai Maka kurur Maka a Maka all right be careful  we got another uh fire truck or an ambulance or  

something as usual okay so uh what you should be  doing is if you're trying to learn a language it  

doesn't matter if you're old or young what what  is important is how you learn okay and you can  

do this anywhere so rather than trying to learn  through your native language if you learn through  

your native language you will think through your  native language when you speak and this is why  

lots of people have to uh translate and hesitate  and think about grammar rules and they just they  

don't understand the language like a native okay  but what you're doing again like the example here  

I learn the English word and I connect that with a  thing or a situation okay all right hopefully that  

makes sense but there there's no there's no like  strong Advantage for having for being a child if  

you if you take a child and an adult at the same  time like let's say I start with a one-year-old  

child uh and a 10-year-old or let's say like a 20  or 30 or even a 50-year-old adult if I can teach  

both of them the same language as a first language  the adult speaker is going to be speaking much  

faster than the child for sure absolutely okay so  the the child doesn't really have an advantage of  

learning what they want to or learning when  they feel interested or choosing you know the  

particular things they want to learn that kind of  thing uh so there are lots of advantages and I I  

talk about those things in that article but the  most important one is just how you learn all right

um uh yo can I okay I answer that one all  right actually typically uh such as a word  

clone we might have learned it on our science  textbook or in our language we can see it like  

people can clone a sheep nowadays in English it's  kind of easy to really understand yeah and that  

just means you're getting multiple examples of  something the first time you hear a word often  

you won't understand exactly what it means that's  you know unless you have like a good teacher or  

you just really understand something because  it's presented very well uh and and this is  

just a problem in human communic it's difficult  to express exactly what you want to say and have  

the other person understand it perfectly that like  almost never happens and so that's why we need to  

give lots of examples and and uh it's the same  way for regular communication and for language  

learning as well all right uh ilder says when I  hear an unknown word in a conversation or video  

it is like an impact to my brain yeah so I try to  learn this word immediately from different input  

sources exactly yes this is a great way to do it  and so I noticed that that too you will you were  

just listening and then ding some additional  word or something you didn't know you weren't  

prepared for that uh and now uh okay you should  you should go after that word then try to get  

more information ah Yokohama okay yeah my uh my  my wife's sister uh she used to live in Yokohama  

now she lives in uh Tokyo I can understand you  99% well that's good to hear venicius Yokohama  

I want you to come to my city okay well go ahead  and make an event and plan and then bring me up

what about the argument says kids's brain are very  malleable compared to an adult but the people who  

make that argument then that was then that means  that you can't learn like any new things or it's  

much more difficult for you to learn new things as  an adult and there's some argument to that because  

like a child it's just like an empty like an empty  cup and you can start filling it with information  

but an adult they already have some information  and you have to be a bit more intelligent about  

how you how you fit new information in there  but there's no there's no disadvantage that  

that also doesn't have a like Advantage with it  so again one example is it might like if it's if  

it is true that people have a more difficult  time learning learning languages as they get  

older and I've not seen like I I've not seen any  credible study about this because nobody has like  

tested this about learning a language as a second  language uh versus learning a language as a first  

language uh and so you would have if if you could  actually test that I would I would be happy to be  

a part of that study so if I took someone who  was like a even a group of people so a group of  

adults starting to learn English uh from zero like  they don't know any English at all uh and you put  

another group in a beginner class like a typical  English as a second language lesson class I would  

I would destroy that class for sure I would I  would be able to get those people speaking and  

they would think wow like I'm an adult but here  I am speaking this other language and it's it's  

quite easy for me and that's just because of how  you learn and so there are even if there are brain  

physical brain differences or whatever uh I would  I don't know I I wouldn't think that's a big deal  

because remember we also learn new things all  the time in our native language and you learn  

even different languages in your native language  so I learn how to communicate at a new job maybe  

they have specific vocabulary that they use for  technical things or just for that company or  

that industry uh or I might speak more politely  to some people or more casually to other people  

or I get into lots of different organizations that  require uh learning specific vocabulary and so if  

I can do all that as an adult there's no reason  why I can't do that uh in a different language

you want people to tip Oh you mean like for super  chatting or whatever like on these on these videos  

super chatting uh if if that's what you're asking  for I don't really I don't like wasting time with  

that I think like there's also like when I when I  watch people who do do live streams and they have  

some kind of tip or do super chats or something  they they feel obligated so they feel like they  

have to uh say something and respond to like a  particular comment and if people don't get their  

comment read they get upset about that or whatever  and so it just and often like you might be talking  

about some and people just want to get to the  content and obviously I'm reading comments here  

that's kind of part of the content of what we do  because I answer questions from people about that  

um but yeah generally generally speaking I just  find it annoying and I don't it's it's also why I  

took off uh commercials so you don't see ads on my  videos if you if you're watching any of my videos  

and you click play and the video just begins it's  because I turned off the ads years ago uh because  

that's it's it's like annoying and it anything  that can stop the learning process I don't want  

that like in the in the thing so I don't know if  you want to just send my happy to get more money  

feel free send me some money but uh I you most  of the time I I prefer if people were just buying  

programs or whatever that that's much easier  uh thing for people to do all right um let's

spend learning English in a day I don't know how  however many hours you like there there's not  

like a specific number of hours that you could  or could not spend it just depends on what you  

do but you can get lots of input and the point  is not like how many hours it's how efficient  

is the learning like the example I gave before  if you have if you have to wait to get a whole  

bunch of examples until you really understand  something or or the lessons are just really  

confusing then of course it will take you more  time and you will waste more time and and spend  

more time and not get fluent so the the point is  just to be efficient and to try to get as many  

good examples that help you understand something  even if it's only one example that's fine so if  

you understand something and then you can move on  from that so don't worry about spending a lot of  

time just worry about uh getting the correct input  that actually helps you understand things uh xdl  

again why people often say say I it don't just is  to say I don't know what you mean re re rewrite  

that there might there looks there's like some  typos or something in there Alexander says hey

the ESL way is faster for beginner no ESL is also  slower for beginners uh and you did there there's  

no there's no time when ESL is better than efl  like if I had to compete with someone on like  

every every level for doing that I like uh maybe  the only thing would be if you're trying to cram  

a lot of information in your head for a test and  you just want to use translations and you think of  

some kind of nemonic uh to help you remember  something for a test maybe that's faster but  

if your goal is confident fluent speech then  no you definitely don't want to do that and  

it's especially important when you're starting to  teach people so if they are a beginner uh they're  

maybe just starting to learn the language you  really want to make it fun and enjoyable from  

the very beginning so that they'll enjoy it and  they'll actually want to learn and if you think  

wow you know language learning is fun and easy  especially for a little kid then they will want  

to continue doing that so it's very easy uh if you  make it understandable for them but what happens  

is that uh often people hate language learning  just like I did I hated language learning and I  

failed for 15 years to learn different languages  until I found out oh you should get fluent first  

and then speak all right and so like it usually  usually it happens that way and if you ask people  

like what subject did you not like in school they  often say language learning and most people would  

like to be able to speak other languages it's like  a very cool impressive thing just like playing a  

guitar or piano or something in front of your  friends if you can go out if I go to a French  

restaurant and I can start speaking French to  the waiter in front of my friends they're like  

ooh la la like oo like you know that's very  cool that you can do that right and so that  

like just as a kind of impressive cool thing  that you could do more people would want to  

learn a language if they could if they thought  it was easy but the problem is most people are  

burned by language learning so they get burned  by that so this great expression to get burned

just like you touch a fire or something and I got  I got burned by that so anything that gives you a  

bad experience uh maybe you don't enjoy doing that  thing and often it's right at the beginning so you  

really want to you want to learn a language  but it's just really frustrating to do so and  

you think that you are stupid or M just language  learning itself is just a pain in the ass uh and  

that makes my job more difficult because they're  all these people that teach English as a second  

language and I guess at the same time that also  creates more people for me to help but it would  

be nice if they would just teach people correctly  from from like the first you know the first when  

they the first lesson I guess all right but good  uh good questions uh everyone here all right let's

you really understand something so if you're  watching Vlogs or whatever there should be some  

kind of focus where you're trying to understand  something it's like an answer to a question you  

have like I want to use this grammar point but  I don't know how to use it so I should probably  

get lots of examples of that uh and will help  me feel more confident about how it works all  

right so yes like you're doing the right thing by  getting more input but it's not just like getting  

um getting like like random input you should  focus on something and get more in uh uh get more  

information about that thing until you understand  it and you will feel it it's a physical thing you

suia says what is the best practice routine the  best practice routine is just getting more input  

I know that it sounds like a like a weird idea  because everyone says you have to speak in order  

to get fluent but the whole point of this video is  just giving you examples and examples and examples  

that you get fluent first and then you speak so  let me draw this up here again to compare the  

English has a second language versus English as  a first language approach people think that you  

learn first so this is the ESL you learn first  and then you practice speaking and so like the  

practice is over here all right and then because  you do this like fluency is the result so they  

think you learn something and most people when  they learn something in a classroom they don't  

really understand it and so they start practicing  that and really practicing in this way it just  

means repeating that thing again and again but you  don't learn more through repetition because you're  

not giving yourself more information if I just say  like blah blah blah blah blah or if it's a phrase  

like B Boo Boo or something if I'm just repeating  that I'm not learning anything I'm not feeling  

more confident about that I might maybe slightly  improve my pronunciation if I'm just trying to to  

do get used to the like the movement of my mouth  or something but this process here is not going to  

get you fluent and this is why so many people they  learn they don't understand it's the teacher's  

fault that they don't understand because they're  just say here's a rule or remember this thing and  

that okay you're not teaching anybody anything  you're giving them information to try to memorize  

and so when they practice speaking they're really  working hard and they feel bad if they don't speak  

well uh and they don't achieve fluency so usually  people are just kind of learning more they develop  

a passive vocabulary they can understand things  when they hear them but they're not developing  

fluency because they just they don't really have  that actual native understanding of the language  

and that's just because they didn't get enough  examples to understand it so what happens with  

the let me draw a line here so the English as a  first language example and this works with any  

language I'm just using English because that's  what we do here uh but really what's happening  

is like here's the learning phase and here's the  speaking phase over here but the practice is all

here so you you don't like spend extra time  over here like practicing speaking the point  

is to go from like we want to get from like zero  understanding to 100% understanding and then we  

speak so this process over here is where the  fluency is built okay so it's the opposite of  

what people think is what you should be doing  so this one is like is speak You're basically  

you're telling people speak uh and that's how  you build fluency but over here it's actually  

get fluent then speak which is the title of this  video okay so that's how it works so if you want  

to practice more the practice is just the uh the  developing or the development of understanding  

that's it so when you feel confident about saying  something I know I will say this grammar point I  

will use it correctly I have the words correct I  can pronounce it correctly I don't have an accent  

or something that I'm worried about that's when  you speak so this process here it creates lots of  

uncertainty and this process is all about removing  uncertainty we want you to not feel worried or or  

nervous or whatever about speaking we want you to  feel uh very confident about that and so you can  

get this input like this learning phase over here  it can come from many ways or many places so you  

can watch something you can read you can listen  but the point is do you understand that are you  

learning each time you hear something you should  be feeling more confident about it so it's all  

a very conscious process you can feel it as it's  happening you know it's working or you know it's  

not working all right uh all right let's see here  all right uh RPS Ruku Ruku if I'm pronouncing that  

correctly I'm guessing that's French are slow  Learners the best Learners in the long run not  

necessarily you could be like a slow learner or  a fast learner whatever but it's just like if you  

if you are a slow learner in a bad process then  you're never going to get fluent and you will just  

be doing it slowly but if you are a a like a fast  learner in a bad process you will you will also  

you know not make progress but you will make more  progress I don't know you will make less progress  

faster I don't know a better way to say that but  the point is like the the learning process is  

the more important thing so if you take someone  like uh for me uh the one of the reasons that I  

like teaching this as opposed to doing something  being like a like a Gym trainer or something is  

that I can actually build your muscle for you  when I teach you properly so if you understand  

something if you listen to a lesson you're like  oh wow I actually understand that and now I feel  

confident using it it's like I just grew that  muscle forward you and I didn't depend on you to  

study harder or try to repeat it to yourself in  the mirror or something like that uh and so the  

the learning process really is the that's the most  important part about the learning it's not where  

you live or how old you are or whatever it's it's  just how how you actually learn Bruno again nice

uh when you go back to America do an experiment  on public and ask people about certain grammar  

rule uh that would be interesting too yeah I've  thought about making videos like that uh I can  

probably find native speakers here in Japan to do  that kind of content with I already know what the  

answer would be it would be entertaining and I'm  sure it would get some views or whatever but just  

asking people like what is the present perfect  or what is a phrasal verb or something and people  

just like I don't know but they will probably  use the present perfect and phrasal verbs in  

their answer uh and that's more for non-native  Learners that's the the lesson there is really  

for non-native Learners that you don't need to  know that information to get fluent so that's  

why I don't don't spend a lot of time like talking  about the names of grammar rules and diagramming  

grammar like that because it it's not really going  to help you it might help a little bit and we talk  

about that in fluent for life just if people  want to have more information or know like the  

specific thing we're referencing so it's easier  to find but really we get fluent uh with lots of  

examples so that's what we do uh EXL again I don't  mean it doesn't mean why people say like former  

I don't mean I don't mean in real conversation  I'm not sure about it but I've heard it so many  

times uh I don't quite understand look this is  a perfect example of of like it's not it's yeah  

you could call it like misunderstanding but it's  more about like incomplete information so I want  

to understand but I'm not getting like a perfect  sentence that makes it clear it sounds like what  

you're asking is if people say I don't mean or  it doesn't mean um in both of those cases if if  

I understand you correctly if I understand you  correctly uh native speakers will often say like  

I don't mean this or it doesn't mean that and you  can you can talk about both of those being I mean  

both of those would be fine and you will hear  both of those in a sentence uh the meaning is  

just slightly different so it's like I don't mean  something or the thing I'm trying to say doesn't  

mean something all right it's you're talking  about the same thing the Nuance is a little  

bit different but you can hear both of those in  conversations C nice to see you again I'm late

context record words from a native English speaker  and sort of most able sort the most spoken words  

yeah I'm sure you can even find lists of that  already uh the thing that would be interesting  

which we have thought about creating as well  Dr uh is like more naturally varied review that  

gives you I think probably if you could combine it  with like you combine uh kind of yish but with a  

thesaurus so a thesaurus lets you get similar  similar words or similar phrases that kind of  

thing uh that would be helpful to like think about  it from a situational standpoint so that's much  

better for people so I wanted to make actually I  kind of still do what what I would call a reverse  

dictionary so often uh like in if you're learning  a language you only have your native language and  

you just think what would I say and then how do  I say that in English but if you could learn it  

all in English from the situation so a better  way to organize the information would be like  

in this kind of situation if I'm angry what do I  say and then you would get examples of different  

things you could say and you would have different  examples of natives saying that kind of thing so  

it's not like even the most frequently used words  that's that's like less uh it's helpful but it's  

less helpful than having specific examples for  situations if that were possible to do so we we  

do that we we just had to do it manually in  uh in fluent for life that's how the lessons  

are organized but uh you could you could make  something like that uh is frustrated I'm trying  

to understand everything read right but not  fluent enough for talking yeah it just means  

Crystal uh that you need more input you need to  get lots more uh but focus on something don't try  

to become fluent in the whole language just pick a  specific thing you're interested in and learn more

messages or comprehensible input or whatever  but basically you just need to understand the  

language better when you understand the language  like a native rather than thinking about rules  

and translations that's when you speak so don't  worry about forcing yourself to speak more or  

that you need more speaking practice you don't  need more speaking practice you just need to  

understand the language better but it's easier  to do this if you find a specific thing you're  

interested in like fixing cars or making I don't  know candy or whatever whatever that thing is that  

were specifically interested in uh but if you have  that just get lots more information about that and  

you will become fluent Naturally by understanding  that information more so what you know well you

you could use both of those the the the situation  the meaning is a little bit different if you're  

talking about like the potential of something like  I would buy everything you want like you're asking

you you could say that both of those are fine uh  I can understand people says I'm guessing that's  

uh maybe Anna maybe I can't read the cerlic uh  I can understand people when they speak slowly  

unfortunately yeah and so again if you if you can  only understand people when they're speaking slow  

it's because you've only had examples of slow  speech from English lessons so part of that is  

me and and like I'm I I don't expect people to  become fluent with one video on YouTube or even  

like 10 videos on YouTube really you need to get  lots of input about the same thing from different  

people that's why we do that influent for life but  the point is that you need to get that input and  

if you want to prepare yourself for how natives  really communicate you need to be more uh or get  

more of the actual way natives are communicating  when you learn yoyou says I watched your video on  

how you use the word on and I was impressed  with how you explain it it's like I found a  

treasure glad to hear yep and so you you will  if I do a good job then you understand that's  

what I'm trying that's the whole point of what I'm  trying to do and often it will take more than one  

lesson to do that so don't be discouraged if I say  something you're like I don't quite know what it  

means you can ask a question or you will probably  get more information about it later uh but don't  

put a lot of pressure on yourself to understand  something immediately if you can that's great but  

often it takes a few examples and then you feel it  so it can be an investment sometimes where you're  

you're kind of getting more examples and examples  and then uh because you had all those examples you  

really need lots of different examples to feel  very confident about something so sometimes you  

don't sometimes you do but that's how it happens  all right well looks like we've uh reached the end  

of the chat fantastic uh everybody is uh doing  a good job hopefully they're learning out there  

remember you don't need to force yourself  to speak just relax get lots of input and  

as you feel more confident you will actually feel  yourself being ready to talk about certain things  

because in a conversation you will talk about  some things or you will use some vocabulary or  

some grammar points or something like that uh  and you will feel confident about using those  

uh but if you if you do not then you will not  use those use those things excuse me so just  

think about what you're interested in or what  things you would like to learn more about and  

then just get more of that information and then  it will help you all right uh Aron says uh nice  

to see you again Aran lots of stuff so simple uh  let's see Ain Zack I'm always mispronouncing you  

guys just have some zany names over there uh maybe  you can use the word digest instead of understand  

Drew yeah but that but so the the problem is  if you if you you have to make something very  

simple that doesn't require more explanation  so if I say oh you just need to digest the word  

then people like well what does that mean then I  have to explain what digest means so it doesn't  

it doesn't really solve the problem but I think in  general people if you this is a particular problem  

that you need to explain negatively and by that  I mean like you talk about what not to do so if  

I say if you're learning it through a translation  then you will think about translations when you  

speak so I'm I'm explaining it negatively it's  like you don't really understand it because you  

need a translation so you should learn something  until you don't need the translation anymore then  

you just understand it in English that's really  the point and so the the most basic way for me to  

explain it to people is just learn English like a  native and so that like I had a whole video it's  

like the most popular video on fluency on English  fluency on YouTube and it's I think it's got like  

19 million views now and that's the the get fluent  with one trick video that I made a couple years  

ago and that was it's the same thing I'm teaching  today which is get fluent like a native like learn  

like a native and you will speak like one but  I have to make I don't know like I I spend a  

lot of time talking about these things because  people don't believe it and even though the the  

traditional way is continuing to to stop them  from speaking it's very difficult for people  

to try something else so that's that's part of the  problem uh let's see but I'll continue yeah if you  

have any other any other ideas that would be great  I mean even the term comprehensible input I don't  

really like that very much because it's just it's  it's like too much it's a very technical way of  

explaining that all right uh abishek says thanks  so much it's my pleasure Ash says I can't speak  

as fluently as the English medium students but I  want to be fluent so be a fluent speaker the way  

they've been I feel so shy uh at that time not  only that I feel helpless and I feel ignorant  

yeah and so those are the typical remember the  the feelings you have those are those are not  

from you you didn't do anything wrong and it's not  your fault it's really just the way you learn this  

is the typical way that most people learn and  that's what causes all the problems so instead  

of trying to learn the traditional way where you  don't really understand things and then okay and  

now I have to force myself to speak so teachers  traditional teachers really put a lot of pressure  

on students to improve by themselves they say  okay well I taught you here's a list of words  

now go practice speaking and that that doesn't  mean anything to people it's like well what do  

you mean like practice speaking but instead like  I want to continue giving you information I keep  

answering questions and things until people  really understand something and then they can  

speak all right that's how it works all right uh  George Chan or Chan thanks nice to see you there

or also for learning in general uh well I think  in general if you understand something you learn  

it that I mean that's the basic idea if you it's  just very specific for language learning uh and  

Lang language learning is such an interesting  example because everybody already got fluent  

you know especially for adult Learners you  already got fluent using this method in your  

native language but people still think they need  to do something different when learning another  

language so the they already know that it works  and it already did work for them but they they  

think they need to do something different so in  general I think people probably don't have that  

same issue uh with most education like if I'm  teaching math or science or something the point  

is to make it understandable but in general um  people will still especially for science or or  

math or something they will try to tell you what  the rules are rather than just help you understand  

how it works all right so if I'm trying to teach  you something really like I I should be making it  

easy for you to understand whatever that thing is  if it's a language or a math lesson or something  

like that but I think I think maybe some people  try to do that now with apps maybe they're trying  

to teach you some science or something like that  uh but in general yes the goal is to understand  

what you learn and when you understand then you  can talk about it or use it or whatever uh we  

tend to think make things more difficult yes uh  we have a it's like a natural a natural process  

of trying to make things more difficult I'm  always trying to make things as simple as I can  

like even the app uh Frederick I made like it's I  don't want to explain to people how the language  

works I don't want to do this and and tell you  what pronunciation for what sound that kind of  

thing I want you to learn it and Discover it and  get lots of examples and then feel more confident  

about your accent and pronunciation because you  did it like that ner says do you teach TOEFL exam  

questions no I do not I don't focus on TOEFL uh  but lots of people do you can find them on YouTube  

just look for TOEFL I I focus on conversational  speech uh which will help you obviously uh for  

taking tests but I'm not a specific test teacher  as uh I can't speak as fluently oh I I read that  

one already all right Juan Carlos again sometimes  is easy to understand but most of the time when  

someone asks me for something uh I just get stuck  and can't answer after a while and when I'm in a  

conversation is over I keep talking in my mind  yeah and so this is another result of learning  

English as a second language the typical way  that people would learn so you have um kind  

of problems that are caused by by this process  where you don't understand something and then  

after the conversation is finished you will think  more about it or try to answer questions or think  

about something better you could have said uh  in that situation but the more you understand  

like this the faster you get flowing nil Beck uh I  miss your lives on Sundays and Mondays uh yeah it  

just depends on when I'm when I'm able to do it  so I think this month and maybe next next month  

uh probably I think maybe only like two Monday  videos I think we'll see uh yes so it'd be it'd

right hi from Russia so I'm still confused about  how we should practice after learning well the if  

you if you feel confident about doing something  like let's say I give you a Japanese a Japanese

lesson MAA Maka AKA AK Maka Kuro Kuro Maka Kudo  AKA a Maka now if I if I just stopped the lesson  

here and I never taught you any Japanese  again then you would forget what I just  

taught you but the first lesson it's like I'm  just helping you understand it the same way I  

would teach a Japanese child the language so even  my own kids I can speak to them in Japanese and  

like teach them something about about Japanese  rather than doing it through English uh but in  

this example the practice comes like as you as  you feel confident that you know what this is

like Murasaki Murasaki

so so I can I can start giving you an explanation  uh but helping you understand things in Japanese  

like we put these two together and like it becomes  purple that kind of thing I could make it more  

complicated and you would start feeling more  confident about using it you would personally  

know when it was a right time for you to start  speaking so if I said like oh what color is this

like so after I give you enough examples and you  remember it you feel confident you're prepared you  

understand the patterns I'm using then you would  start using it in your conversation so you don't  

really require like speaking practice you just  start speaking and you'll notice yourself using  

more things in conversations and this is exactly  what happens with children so they begin they're  

just saying like a word or a color or a shape but  then they start putting words together and longer  

sentences and more interesting sentences and so  it works exactly the same way for adults if you  

learn this way okay hopefully that makes sense all  right so don't worry about like speaking practice  

it's more just like learning and you practice  while you learn and then you speak and so you can  

you can practice more the like you know tweaking  like slightly changing your accent or something  

that's the kind of thing you can do when you're  speaking uh but you will feel confident about  

doing them and you and you will find more words  appearing in your conversations naturally as you  

do that uh let's see language wire at the left  hemisphere how long will it be there you know a  

child can easily learn as many languages as they  want for the wire that's why kids learn faster  

than adults do uh yeah I don't know about that um  and again like lot lots of the testing from that  

comes from from teaching this way and so when  you're a child uh adults will like even if you  

have to sit in a classroom and learn this way as  a child adults will force you to do that you have  

to do that and it's still in in the language that  you learned um like naturally as a first language  

but adults adults could learn this way also uh if  they're actually learning their their language as  

a native language uh speaker would learn it or as  another language but you're still learning it as  

a first language so it's I don't know I I I would  I would not believe any particular studies about  

children being able to do anything better than  adults because the the study itself would not be  

really comparing an accurate version of that  so if you had a a study that had like native  

children versus adults but they were both able  to learn uh English as a first language I think  

adults would do way better so they would be able  to also like practice more they would be able to  

find more information themselves outside of any  learning time as well let see Joe I found it uh  

very helpful listening a lot of native speakers  audio or video like Andrews I listen and listen  

over and over again and not only understand better  but also the way they say things yeah so you will  

notice more the more you listen but the naturally  varied review of hearing these different things  

is better than just straight repetition by itself  David says at least we can make a simple sentence  

we are still able to communicate with everyone  y so when it comes to practice after class and  

good morning Professor all right well I think  that's the end uh I think people get the idea  

here remember uh don't put pressure on yourself  to speak that's really the number one lesson here  

for this video Don't Put pressure on yourself to  speak understand things more and focus so focus on  

a particular thing uh you'd like to learn whatever  that is and that will give you more information  

about that all right let's see uh let's see all  right I'll answer these like last questions how  

to think in English you have to learn in English  that's how you think in English just like I gave  

the example before so if you want to think  in English do this learn English as a first  

language not as a second language so I'm not  uh into the Japanese but I won't forget that

in a store and I'm like ah you know like give  me like something red like which color do you  

like and you hear like AKA and someone pulls  a red shirt you would be like yes I got it I  

understood that and you did it as a first language  and that motivation like the the feeling that you  

get from that is really exciting and that makes  you uh feel a lot more interested in learning  

more fake cleaner is back so we just need to get  more input and understand them and then we can  

speak confidently am I correct yes that's the  idea and if you if you if it's still not clear  

think about the alternative the alternative is  to force yourself to speak until maybe you figure  

something out but you're still going through  that same process of okay I finally understood  

something but you're like forcing yourself to  speak during that process all right so if you  

if you want to get fluent the uh the comfortable  way without embarrassing yourself if that's a  

problem for you some people they don't care some  people can get into a conversation and make lots  

of mistakes and it doesn't matter I mean I I  make some mistakes sometimes as well uh and I  

don't really worry about it anymore I'm at that  uh higher level and I feel more confident about  

that uh but a lot of people do not and so I don't  I don't force people to do that thank you you're

you I don't know why I talk about that when I  recorded my voice I realize they say perfect  

yes but don't don't only listen to me listen  to lots of different people could you please
