hi there I'm drew badger the world's

number one english fluency guide and it

is a pleasure to welcome you to another

advanced listening practice lesson well

today what I wanted to talk about is

something actually I noticed about my

daughter and when you know the way I

teacher I really need to bring her on

again but i do these videos in a

separate recording studio that's quite

far from my house and I don't know we

don't really bring her with me anyway

maybe we'll do that at some point in the

future but since she is now about gets a

year and maybe three months now so she's

starting to learn more and I talked a

bit about in these videos in the ways

that i teach her and speak with her and

I kind of like thought about a third

thing today

now something that like we kind of do

things automatically don't really

realize we're doing them but i like to

try to think about why do the things

that I do because it makes it easier to

teach and help kind of illuminate our

help other people see those things as

well so on this i guess in this video

one of the things that have covered in

previous videos and i'll just mention it

very quickly here is the two main types

of conversation when I'm like teaching

quote-unquote so I'm actually like

making an effort to physically teach

something or to actually teach something

to my daughter

so when I'm sitting with Aria I will

have a some kind of speaking time where

I'm just speaking like this and some

kind of speaking time when i'm actually

indicating a very specific thing or a

very specific word or phrase I want her

to remember so it could be stand up or

sit down and I'm careful to show her the

action while she's doing those things so

i should actually like pick her up so

she's standing up and sit her down so

she's sitting down i'm comparing

different things like this animal or

that animal or this color and that color

so these are the two different kinds of

conversation example practice she's

getting but there's also a third kind in

like I we know it's kind of a natural

everyday thing that happens but I didn't

really think about it so much again it's

just one of those things where you don't

think about it so you don't forget say

anything about it but just thinking

about it recently I thought I would

bring it up here and this is being the

third person in the conversation and

this is where my daughter gets the

chance to just

listen to my wife and I speak whether

we're speaking in Japanese are speaking

in English she's getting the example of

how people actually speak in a

conversation and it's funny that I

didn't really think about this because

this is exactly what we do in master

English conversation lessons so we're

giving you the opportunity or we give

members the opportunity learners in the

program of actually getting to just

listen to what native speakers are

saying in a real situation now you can

get this in lots of different ways you

can go out and as I recommend you do

just like kind of spy on people actually

so me not in like a mean way but when I

would be in Japan maybe going to a cafe

i would get a book and pretend to read

it and sit next to some people that were

having a conversation and I would just

listen to them speaking and i'm getting

the idea of how they're communicating

with one another the words that they're

saying the expressions they're using and

how they're you know the emotion of that

situation how they're expressing certain

things and when you get this this is

kind of like creating the complete

picture of how you would learn something

from a child's perspective so the child

is learning all kinds of things when you

don't actually physically teach them

because they're paying attention all the

time to what the parents are doing or

what other people are doing around them

so you should be thinking about the

language in the same way like it's not

just a particular video you might be

watching right now this is the kind of

learning where I'm specifically trying

to teach you something and i'm also

using a little bit more

speaking in a conversational way so that

you can listen to the sound of my voice

and you can hear the flow of the

language but when I'm in a situation

where I'm speaking with somebody else

and I'm I'm trying to also speak with

learners in the end the conversation as

well so when i do master English

conversation lessons i'm speaking with

the other person we're having a

conversation about their life for their

hobbies or something and don't you know

both of us will sometimes address the

audience we will turn and speak to the

camera and you know say things just to

get people more involved in the

conversation but it's seeing how native

speakers actually interact with each

other in a real way and really the only

way you can get this is you know

something like master English

conversation where you're watching two

people interacting in a real unscripted

situation and you get to see what it

looks like

like this is exactly why we use video

for that and not audio conversations but

again you can just get it anywhere when

you're actually going outside and spying

on people but it gets like a good way

but watching how other people interact

with each other and it's really best to

see this in just an everyday way like if

you have a problem with like what do

people say when they go to the bank to

you know like to get money or something

like that all you would do is you would

go to the bank and just like sit there

at the bank and watch people like

they're like walking up to the you know

the the person the teller this is the

person who would you be giving them

money or having answering questions at

the bank and you would just listen to

what happens in in that situation do the

same thing at a hotel

what do you do when you check in at the

front desk of a hotel when you first

arrived

well I could sit in a lobby of the hotel

and I could just listen to what other

people are saying so maybe i'm going to

go to that hotel and before I check in i

would just listen like I okay it sounds

like people come in they're saying this

they answer these questions and you're

getting the actual situation for what

that would be

and you're also giving yourself a bit of

mental rehearsal so you you watch it and

then you see it in your mind about what

you're looking at now this is different

from something like movies and so movies

are movies and TV shows are here and as

far as like the level of conversation

and the importance of using them for

your learning because they are scripted

so this means that people have taken

their time to specifically time a joke

or they really want to express something

perfectly so they rehearse it a lot and

make sure that the conversation works

really well but real conversations are

up here because that's the actual way

that people speak most times and people

are not perfect communicators i am not a

perfect communicator i make mistakes all

the time even in these videos where I'm

saying something and maybe I meant to

say something better or i could have

expressed it in a better way again I'm

not reading from a script right now and

the reason I'm doing that is because I

want to actually give you a real example

of what it's like to just two dis

practice speaking to just actually see

the conversation unfolding when I'm not

thinking about a pretty

killer thing I don't have a list of

things on the board behind me that says

okay we need to do this and that and

that and when you're in a conversation

you should be trying to let the

conversation flow in the same way so all

of this the important thing to remember

is that like TV shows and movies are

great and if you can learn these things

it really gives you a lot of improvement

they're fantastic for learning but again

the kind of the pinnacle the top of the

mountain the best thing you can learn

with his actual conversations and you

can learn that with a course like master

English conversation or just going out

into the world and really taking your

time to listen but try to focus on kind

of from situation to actually what the

thing is you want to learn so again the

the bank example or the grocery store or

anything else we're seeing how two

different people interact with each

other like a farmers market is a great

thing to go you go to look at a local

public market and just walk around just

listen to people you know if you're like

wanting to buy some fruit let's say I'm

trying to practice some Italian I don't

know Italian at all but if i'm going to

try to practice some Italian for a

specific purpose again that specific

purpose is really important because if

you did say i want to get fluent it's it

doesn't really mean anything for you but

if you want to say i want to be able to

go to a grocery store and talk with the

owner of that store and get the best

apples that they have now that's

something that your mind can really

understand and think okay that's very

clear goal and now we have a specific

thing we need to practice for so in that

case i would go to the farmers market

just some market in Italy and we've got

lots of people walking around and people

talking with each other and I'm just

listening I'm getting the example of

what that would be like in the same way

that a child would be learning so we've

got these three kinds of learning

there's the explicit learning where I'm

trying to show you something specific i

really want to quote unquote teach you i

really want to make sure you understand

something so making it very clear and

obvious

we've got the second kind of learning

where you are listening to something

just to get the overall sense of the

language the flow of the language the

rhythm of the language and then you got

this third way where you're listening to

actually people using the language in

everyday situation and understanding

kind of more of the language in the way

like two people actually have a

conversation so if you're just listening

to kind of lessons by themselves it's

going to be more difficult for you

actually have to watch people

interacting so you get a sense of what

that's like it's obviously more

difficult for you to try to do something

yourself if you have not seen it done

well in person so look for more chances

for actual conversations to learn if you
