Oh hello there can you smell what is in the air there is a certain aroma floating around in

the place in which I'm standing right now right behind me there's lots and lots of fresh

garlic growing all over the place and I must admit the aroma is quite strong it is a Super

Sunday and of course we are live today yes we are coming up today we're talking about

lots of things including saying sorry do you find it easy to apologise do you find it easy

to say that you are sorry and also do you have a special person in your life to whom

you can tell your deepest fears and your worries is there a special person with whom you can

share your fears in this thing we call life mr. Steve will be here as well joining us

live despite the fact that he's been feeling a little unwell this week he hasn't been very

well isn't that a shame hopefully today he'll be much better and of course you are more

than welcome to join in on the live chat as well because it is a Sunday afternoon it's

just after two o'clock here in the UK and this is English in your ear live.

yes it's a beautiful day we have had some glorious weather over the past few days and

you know I'm going to show you some of the sights we've had such a lovely lovely day

let's have a look at the spring view this is the view that greeted me this morning so

this is early this morning when I open my window this is what I saw oh I do like the

spring weather I'm going to be honest with you I know I say this almost all the time

during this time of year but I love springtime I really do and there you can see on my little

damson tree there is now blossom coming out on that particular tree so it looks as if

Spring has definitely sprung I think so also there are lots of newborn lambs popping out

around the area which I live and as you know I love the animals I really do I love watching

nature so we have a few nature video clips to show today also mr. Steve has been doing

something very important I don't know why but Steve always gets very excited at this

time of year he always gets very excited because when the weather gets better it means you

can go out into the garden you see so Steve has been busy doing things in the garden yesterday

he was very busy we will take a look at the thing that Steve did yesterday a little bit

later on also coming up lots of questions for you I tell you something there is one

question I would like to ask and that is will brexit happen it's been a very dramatic week

once again with the plans for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union it was supposed

to happen on the 29th of March that has been canceled we will now not be leaving on the

29th of March but it looks as if we might be leaving in mid April or even late May so

it depends it depends on what happens next week because there is yet another vote to

decide on whether or not to go ahead or to extend the time needed so many things going

on and today so this is now breaking news mps members of parliament here in the UK are

now pressuring Theresa May to resign can you believe it so we might actually have some

breaking news today just in case Theresa May says ok I'm leaving I will sort bricks it

out and then I will leave so who knows but a lot of people now putting pressure on tourism

a saying that you must go you have made a mess of brexit that's what some people think

however others disagree so lots of things going on politically at the moment I don't

normally like to talk about politics but sometimes it is interesting especially when the things

in question when the politics concerns your own country so lots of things going on here

also around the world is well including France lots of things going on there also in Venezuela

we've had some terrible news stories coming out from Africa also we have some awful news

stories that have occurred over the past few days from New Zealand so lots of terrible

things also in Holland as well but here on the live stream everything is happy it is

nice to know that there are still many many nice people around in the world and by that

I mean you yes you I don't know why but before I do my live stream before I go on air I always

like to put some aftershave on I don't know why because you can't smell me you can't you

can't tell how I smell but I do like to put a little bit of aftershave on can you see

this this is something called Old Spice and this is an aftershave that virtually every

dad in the world used to use many years ago I remember growing up and my father always

used this particular brand of aftershave and I don't know why but before I go on air before

I go live I always like to put some aftershave on does that make any sense because you can't

smell the aftershave you're on the other side of the screen it doesn't make any sense mr.

Duncan we don't understand what you mean by that let's have a look at the live chat of

course we are here for the live chat oh by the way outside let's have a look at the outside

view first of all so that is now live outside looking across into the distance you can see

the rican hill rican that is the name of that particular hill and that is a live view right

now outside the window as you can see it's a little cloudy it's a little breezy it's

not very warm but it is incredibly sunny it's a beautiful spring day by the way did you

to Friday but last week mr. Steve was taken ill he wasn't very well so so I actually missed

a couple of days last week for which I apologise but mr. Steve wasn't feeling very well so

he had a couple of days off work and I took care of him it's true a tiller is here hello

say that there is no Belarusian this week because Belarusian has gone to a party however

I do have something to show you that I received during the week from Belarus eeeh would you

right although I don't know why I look a little bit fat in that drawing am I really that fat

I'm not sure but thank you very much Mae fee for that I will definitely continue my diet

if I look like that I think I will continue with my diet for at least another five years

and there is mr. Steve I must admit I like the drawing of mr. Steve he looks quite good

actually I do like that yes that's that's that's quite nice thank you very much mavey

thank you for reminding me that I need to stick to my diet I think so lots of things

coming up today lots of questions including do you have a person who you confide in if

you confide it mean means you say something or tell something to a person who you trust

a person who you can rely on to keep the thing secret so do you have a person to whom you

like to share your deepest fears or your deepest worries maybe it is a member of your family

perhaps a friend maybe a friend who is very close to you or some people of course like

to keep Diaries they like to write Diaries now when I was younger I used to keep a diary

I used to write Diaries all the time every year I would write all of things down including

the bad stuff and to be honest with you there was a lot of bad stuff so I used to keep a

diary many years ago but I don't do it anymore I suppose in a way you could use social media

is a kind of diary especially websites like Twitter so quite often I like to record things

that I've done make a note of them on Twitter and then I like to go back and have a look

at the timeline I like to see what I did on a certain day in the past talking of which

would you like to go back in time right now to 2013 on this day way back in 2013 take

a look at this so this is the view that was outside my window six years ago today yes

and there you can see lots of snow on the ground and that is the site that I saw on

this day in 2013 around about two months after moving into my house and that is the view

that I saw on this day in 2013 we had such a lot of snow six years ago today here is

another view look at that but today what is the weather like today outside well this is

what it looks like today a little different a little Karma and as you might have seen

no snow on the ground whatsoever so that's pretty good I like that I like snow but sometimes

I also like the sunshine as well talking of outside we went for a lovely walk yesterday

mr. Steve and myself and we we met up with some lovely furry animals would you like to

see them these are some animals that we met yesterday whilst walking around can you see

these are young highland cattle and as you can see they very long hair their hair is

very long because they normally live in Scotland and for those who know Scotland you will know

that during the winter it gets very cold and very snowy so there you can see a couple of

lovely animals our and these are babies so these are young highland cattle they're not

adults they are actually young ones and as you can see they are a little hungry because

they are eating the straw but I think they are so lovely the only thing that worries

me are the horns I wouldn't like to upset this particular animal I think I might get

hurt because those horns look very sharp so there it is one of the lovely animals that

we met yesterday some Highland cattle normally they live in Scotland but there you can see

these particular ones are living in much Wenlock in England which is where I am at the moment

for those who are wondering my name is mr. Duncan and I live in England and I teach English

here on YouTube and that is what I'm doing today we are live by the way absolutely 100%

2013 we were surrounded by snow I can't believe it no no says I think it's global warming

in a person so an interesting word confide if you confide in someone it means you say

something you tell them something because you trust them maybe it is something very

personal or private or maybe something that has been on your mind for a long time mr.

in time mr. steve is lying on the bed meditating preparing to join us on the livestream let's

have a look at something very interesting now this is an excerpt from one of my full

english lessons and then we will return with mr. steve

can you see what i'm wearing over there these are overalls we normally refer to them as

a pair or set an overall is an item of clothing that is worn so as to protect a person's body

and clothing from damage caused by such things as paint or grease some overalls are designed

to cover the entire body while others only protect certain parts in general overalls

are designed to cover and protect you they are very easy to put on and take off some

overalls have lots of pockets on them so as to allow you to safely carry things around

with you the material used to make overalls can be thin and lightweight or very thick

and heavy the thicker overalls offer better protection from things like grease and oil

and can prevent skin damage caused by a knock or fall you can wear lots of clothing under

your overalls so as to keep you warm or if it's a hot day you can be completely naked

under them and wear nothing at all these overalls are so comfortable I wish I could wear them

when a project you have been planning for a long time goes awry to go awry refers to

go awry which means however much work and preparation you put into something there is

live chat while I was waiting to come on saying that they thought I was in bed really why

do I seem to have this reputation of somebody who spends a lot of time resting or in bed

well I understand that mr. Duncan I think I know why Steve I think I have a feeling

why because lesson that we did a while ago when I was in bed for the whole of the live

lesson no it's because during the week I told people that you were unwell you weren't feeling

very well on Thursday and Friday you you were a little under the weather but I must say

you look great today no thank you you're looking SuperDuper I do feel better mr. Duncan I do

feel a lot better I had a bit of a stomach problem yes let's just believe it at that

yes maybe it was that Chinese meal we went for that was delicious mr. Duncan we went

out I think it was Tuesday wasn't it Tuesday night yes we went out with a fellow thespian

friend of mine what's that fellow lesbian thespian Oh thespian mr. Duncan this is English

in your ear and your ears must be blocked if you couldn't understand what I just said

what's a thespian Oh somebody who's on the stage somebody who likes to perform and we

are in the in the same local amateur dramatics society okay and we met up and the three of

us went out for this lovely Chinese meal yes actually we almost didn't have a meal because

the place we were going to was actually shit but we managed to find another place not as

good though although having said that their spareribs were really nice very strange in

that we've got a local Chinese restaurant here which we often go to maybe on a Thursday

sometimes for a takeaway and like meal so we don't have to cook us and that particular

place is always shut on a Tuesday yes so we know not to go there on a Tuesday and we this

is in much Wenlock we were going to see meet up with my friend in Wolverhampton which is

about half an hour's drive from here and we joked on the way that that Chinese restaurant

would also be shut on a Tuesday and when we got there it was shut yes it actually was

shut but fortunately we found we found another place to go to and the meal was alright but

it wasn't it wasn't as nice the other place so I thought maybe that was the reason why

you had a poorly sporty stomach but it could have been I never thought I mean poison yes

well I think I think it was more because you overrate I didn't really over eat mr. Duncan

but I don't know it was very strange we've got to do some research to see if Chinese

restaurants in the UK are always shut on a Tuesday or the majority of the mo because

it's strange if we found two that are shut on a Tuesday it's obviously not a busy night

of the week for them I think that's my favorite that's my theory my theory is that maybe on

Tuesday not many people go out to have a meal in a restaurant or maybe a Chinese they might

not go for a Chinese meal or an Indian so perhaps they stay closed on Tuesdays because

not many people go out in fact we were in that Chinese restaurant and we were the only

people in there we were so that might that might actually prove the point and evidence

to our theory so the live chat is on we had a lovely day yesterday we went for a lovely

walk and we saw some lovely Highland cattle let's have another look here they are on a

lovely they're a long way from home mr. Duncan yes normally they live in Scotland for people

that don't know Scotland is about 400 miles north of here I would say 300 miles maybe

yes it's a long way it's a long way it would take about four five hours to drive to Scotland

and then you would only be on the edge of it and of course it's renowned for its very

cold barren sort of geography landscape and as you can see those are particular creatures

are very well adapted to living in cold windy wet climates even their eyes are covered by

fur yes don't know how they can see out they are they are very hairy creatures very hairy

and you we've often remarked that even in a strong wind gale or a hurricane they look

so sturdy that they would remain standing hmm I think even in the most severe weather

I would like to argue with them no but I think in the summer we've seen them here in the

summer with all that fur they must get very hot indeed because it's significantly warmer

where we are than it is in Scotland I think cows have hair don't know sorry I think cows

have hair they do yes but those have got a lot of hair even covering their eyes which

is a remarkable yes but those particular ones are babies as well they're baby ones you should

see the adults they're huge they gigantic you wouldn't want to argue with one of those

would not now yesterday Steve did something very special we'll have a look at that dynamo

in a moment yes of course you did that you remember I don't remember much about yesterday

mr. Duncan as you know I don't remember much about what happened five minutes ago yesterday

yesterday oh you were in like you were in the garden yesterday weren't you yes that

you remember being in the garden was in the garden yes don't say what you were doing coming

back to me now good I've often I often say mr. Duncan takes pictures of everything and

sometimes annoys me that wherever we go whatever we do mr. Duncan has has his camera ready

yes to either film or take pictures of things that's often annoys me at the time but it's

very good because we're able to look back and it jogs your memory about things that

happened in the power and without all these photographs over the last 30 years I probably

wouldn't remember anything yes I've got photographs taken of us when we first met years and years

ago in and there are things that when I show Steve the photographs he can't remember what

we were doing at the time it's like a distant memory so that's the reason why I always like

to take photos when we go out somewhere when we're walking anything and I know in the past

I used to annoy Steve a lot because sometimes sometimes for example we're in a restaurant

yeah and the meal arrives and I just wanted to start eating and mr. Duncan monsters aren't

taking pictures of the meal yes I fill that always sort of and of course I just want to

eat so I have to wait five minutes while mr. Duncan takes lots of pictures yesterday on

the way in to much Wenlock we walked in yesterday and mr. dunk we were late anyway I just wanted

to get into town and into the restaurant mr. Duncan spent five minutes filming those Highland

nearly said sheep highland bulls would you call them highland cattle highland cattle

yeah they're a form of carillon though so yes so mr. Duncan always films everything

everything and anything that moves so here's something interesting to show you Steve this

is on this day this very day in 2013 look at that Wow you showed me that this morning

and I couldn't believe looking at the weather outside today and what the weather's been

like for the last few weeks that six years ago we were under heavy snow yeah look at

that just shows you how late the snow can arrive in the UK yes and just to give you

an idea of how deep the snow was look at this Steve this is a great depiction Wow look at

that look all the cars were covered in snow we we had to walk into town I remember this

day very clearly because we had no electricity the electricity went off I thought maybe it'll

be off for days maybe that's what happens because we'd we'd only been living here for

two months yeah so we walked into town we bought some stuff from one of the hardware

shops that we never used by the way and we walked all the way back home but by the time

we got back home the electricity had actually come back on yes we bought a little a burner

a small caligastia a camp stove camp stove that we could cook with and and light the

house with because we thought the electricity might be off for days and one of the neighbors

laughed at us he must have thought we were idiots but we didn't know we'd only been here

for two months and it was extreme weather so we were prepared mr. Duncan yes well sometimes

you have to be prepared that's what they used to say when I was in the Boy Scouts I used

to be a Boy Scout and we always used to say a Boy Scout should always be prepared very

true very true means different things today than it did 40 years ago anyway it's nice

I don't know what that means bother what do you mean I'm intrigued and you leave that

to your imagination I actually don't know what you mean by that I don't I'm not prepared

to go into it okay I mean I mean my mind is like a sewer and even I don't know what you

run about it's a joke just a joke okay let's move on mr. Duncan would you like to have

a few times this year we've had a cold but last one in three years but last week was

days off work which is very unusual for me yes but I'm on the mend as we say on the mend

hello mr. Duncan I'm from Venezuela but at the moment I live in Chile hello to you also

emma is here as well who thinks you are on the bed and she said that both I don't know

what I'm intrigued by what Chou cat Ali says both old men making the people fool I don't

know what you mean by that I mean I I'm strangely intrigued by that s s Stannis Lao says after

living for 13 years in London now that I'm back in Tenerife I still have to listen to

my sister telling me that I not used to having travelled long distances like people in mainland

Spain well when you travel around the UK it doesn't take that long when you think about

it even if we drove from here to Scotland Steve yes we don't take about maybe six hours

it would take about yes to get into the sort of Central Scotland yes it used to take me

three hours to drive to Carlisle which is right near while car not Carlisle sorry yes

Carlisle which is No where am I thinking of now I don't know yes I can't think yes it's

about three hours to get to the border of Scotland I would say that's it and probably

to get to the Highlands of Scotland it would probably take you about six hours that's it

we've often thought about going on holiday to Scotland but the big downside is it takes

you such a long time to get there you really are cut off you can buy very cheap property

in Scotland and have a lot of land and it looks wonderful hmm but you are cut off from

the rest of the UK really yes I buy a very long drive I would love to go to the Glen's

we will go there one day mr. Duncan I will hire an s-class Mercedes I okay and we will

cruise around the Highlands of Scotland no I won't be doing that mr. Duncan will be doing

it in my new Ford Mustang yes that's what I thought I wonder what was going on then

I thought for a moment your memory had been completely erased completely a raised of all

the memories of a Ford Mustang your intention I'm in a bit of a dilemma over that now mr.

Duncan oh why well because they're going to bring an updated version out next year okay

so I was planning to I've been saving it for some time and I was planning to order myself

one maybe in two years time okay they're going to do an update next year which means the

current version won't be available probably in 12 months time and I'm worried that they

will restyle it and it won't look as good as the current model and they'll no doubt

put the price up so I'm in a bit of a dilemma shall I wait two years and risk the new one

looking okay or shall I would just wait say six to nine months and buy one now but I don't

want to buy one now because I really haven't got the money I can't really afford it you've

got nowhere to put it we need we haven't got nowhere to put it either so I'm in a bit of

a dilemma maybe I will buy a second have to be have to put up with buying a secondhand

one yes mr. Duncan any way that we've really strayed off what I was actually talking about

which was distances because in some countries six hours is just around the corner I remember

when I was in China to get from one place to another sometimes it would take about three

days to get there especially if you were driving I know I've told this story before but I once

went with with the guy that owned the school that I work for and he wanted to take me to

his hometown which I thought wasn't that far away but apparently it was it was about it

was over 70 or 80 hours drive not 880 can you imagine being in a car for 80 hours I

know it's horrendous it's the same in America isn't it the probably Russia as well all these

big countries where there are vast distances in order to travel of course you can't fly

but flying to Scotland you can't do that people do but we'd have to go to Birmingham Airport

which is probably an hour away and then you'd have to wait two hours before you got the

flight then it would take you probably 45 minutes then another half an hour to get out

of the airport they never hire a car so you've had as well just drive well I feel like I'm

really taking that trip sorry you're asked but when when when I was in China I actually

I actually abandoned my plans I actually I told my boss I said look don't take this the

wrong way but I didn't realize this journey was going to be so long so we stopped in Beijing

and that's where I I got out the car I got out the car in Beijing and said look Tata

bye but I don't think I want to spend another 50 hours you know of course the other thing

was you were stuck on the back seat there were five people in the car yes so you were

the thing I was going to mention I this is your dream to to actually own a Ford Mustang

but they're not exactly the most economical when it comes to fuel which which I was quite

surprised by I was surprised that you wanted a car because sometimes you are quite obsessed

but by the the economy especially especially the car that you've got now you're always

obsessing about it I've always been obsessed with fuel economy and I get some kind of people

say it's a bit of a sick pleasure but I love to go on a journey and see how best I can

drive to get the most economy out of the out of the out of the engine okay so I I make

sure the tires are perfectly pumped up so that I'm not there's no extra drag I I'm always

which annoys drivers behind me so when I see a junction coming up or or a roundabout I

come off the accelerator a long way before so the car is effectively sort of coasting

up to the same about for example of the traffic lights whereas most people will drive and

then break at the last minute I'm just letting the car sort of gradually slow down so that

I've barely used the brake cells the secret to good fuel economy okay so what's the voiding

using Sarang so what do you get at the moment then from your car now well if this is a my

I'm slightly disappointed well no let me right so the last car I had was a diesel okay Oh

a car and I used to get and that was an eight year old car and I used to get about 51 to

the gallon average from that which was quite good this one is a bigger heavier car and

it's petrol but I'm averaging about I would say about 42 to the gallon 4 to 2 miles for

each gallon of which actually is pretty spectacular for what is a big heavy car hmm and usually

you get about of 25% worse fuel economy with a petrol compared to a diesel ok I'm boring

people already I can tell yes you're boring me but I know drivers behind me because they

they they don't expect me to they expected me to go right up to the traffic lights and

then brake stop well before sometimes people pass me so so did you answer the question

I know it would seem completely at odds the fact that I like to get the most economy out

of a car but I would be buying a car that has a 8 cylinder petrol engine I will only

do about 23 miles per the gallon but then I will probably what I will be doing is trying

to get the most from that which is completely ridiculous this is a sports car you're not

supposed to worry about it no well that's the whole point of having a sports car it

looks gorgeous nothing you know we're not gonna buy a sports car and then worry about

the fuel can say no do you know what really annoys me people that buy sports cars with

diesel engines ok anyway let's not go you do that I'm trying to and try to add I'm trying

to cut this this subject a bit it's turning Italy people I've got to say this first so

some people buy a car with a soft top car okay now that you can take the roof down and

then you notice it's got a diesel engine in it I think the whole point of having us you

don't want to hear a rattling noise e diesel engine I mean if you if you've got the money

to buy a soft top car at least put a decent engine in it not a diesel what are you worrying

about fuel economy for but a v6 or a v8 in it because he doesn't actually over there

over the year if you add up if you do ten thousand miles a year and you're getting 10

miles per gallon less by putting a petrol engine as opposed to a diesel you really gonna

cost you about another two hundred pounds a year not quite sure what any of this has

say that to their children don't they yes will you listen to me ever anything I tell

you it just goes in one ear out the other so do you have a person Steve in your life

who you like to share your your deepest worries with or your fears who do you trust now I

know you have a of really good friends you like to chat with don't you yes and but but

who else would you say that you you trust you made a confidant a confidante confidant

somebody who I trust a person with with with whom you can share your woes your worries

your fears maybe something you are uncertain earth is there any person who might spring

to mind not really yeah how about some very good friends that I may confide things in

oh you mean you mr. Duncan what i confide things in you well I think so we've known

each other for 30 years I think that I can tell you pretty much anything okay quite everything

but nearly everything I think we all need to have some little secrets don't we yeah

we can't tell our loved ones everything I think we have to have some or do we I don't

know maybe do you trust your partner with everything or do you keep some little secrets

back yes that you don't want to tell them about actually you might have done actually

Lillian mentioned the skeleton in the closet so maybe there are some things that we we

have done or something that we've said in the past something that we don't want to share

with other people so we have things that are still locked inside us each person has a skeleton

in the closet all that could be at some point someone could open that cupboard door and

that secret could be revealed for all to see and quite often if you've done something bad

in your past for example politicians get caught out with this a lot them they because politicians

have to be seen to be perfect and and not and being good and not and not saying anything

bad or doing anything bad but often in their past particularly when they're younger or

their teenage years a lot of politicians are now being caught out because somebody finds

some bit of film or something that they've said done in the past which is controversial

and let's face it haven't we all set things in our teenage years which we probably would

wouldn't say now yes I think I think the main thing of course nowadays is is typing things

on Twitter and then you forget that you said it and then years go by and then you become

famous and all of those things you said all of those things you wrote on Twitter are still

there and what happens now and this is part of modern journalism many journalists will

spend hours looking at a person's timeline they will go down the timeline and they will

go way back in time to their early years or their early posts on Twitter just to see what

they've said in quite often you will find there are things on there that are a little

embarrassing things they've typed in the past maybe in the heat of the moment so this is

something that happens a lot in modern journalism I call it lazy journalism because you may

have noticed recently that there have been a lot of events taking place around the world

and you will find that journalists often get their information straight from the internet

maybe from a Facebook page or maybe from a Twitter account and sometimes they get the

information wrong but that is one of the things that journalists do now they will go straight

to Twitter or to Facebook to try and find some information about this person's background

or their early life because many people now have been on the internet or on the social

media sites for years I've been on Facebook for over 10 years but of course even if even

it might not even be that it could be somebody could find something that you've said or done

or politician in his fifties hmm that when he was in his teenage years maybe or early

twenties before you probably formed all your opinions and and already thought about the

world and what it all means we've all said and done things haven't we there could be

a photograph with a view with dressed in inappropriate uniform or inappropriate clothing yes that

somebody might then say oh look he's racist she's racist or something like that and what

you find now is they cringe cringing Lee these politicians are going on television and having

to apologise for things that they did and I'm not sure that that's fair because I mean

somebody like Donald Trump would never apologise for anything that he's done no but that's

a different situation get away with it yes but that's a different situation because now

he's he has power where you can do anything so that the wealthier you get or maybe the

more power you hold that the more you can actually get away with and I think that is

true in many walks of life in business or in certain industries but what that's quite

interesting actually what you just said because there are a lot of cases especially in the

United States everyone is looking at each other's social media timelines to try and

find something that they said or they're going back to maybe their their College yearbook

yeah there are photographs that maybe maybe now would be inappropriate but in the past

wouldn't have been so I think yes yes this happens a lot so so maybe I you know what

I'm gonna do tonight Steve I'm going to check I'm going to check my Twitter just to make

sure there's nothing on there that I've said in the past that it might get me into trouble

everyone was probably looking right now yes I bet they're all going there now it's having

a look no so yes the question really is when when should you apologize for something nobody

interestingly enough we were watching something yesterday Bill Maher show weren't we and there

was a politician on there which is an American show sort of chat show isn't it and so I can't

remember what the phrase was now there was he was asking when should you apologize for

something you've done in the past and some somebody they had on a politician said I apologize

when I've done something wrong but then he said but not when he said something after

and I can't remember what it was now okay he said I apologize if I've done something

wrong but not for something in the past that was sort of behavior that that was might not

be wrong then but is wrong now because it's a different time isn't it you don't have to

keep apologizing for things you've done I'm obviously if you killed somebody oh robbed

or something like that yes but we're not talking about that there always no we're not we're

talking about things that are that are minor or things that you may have done when society

was different yes that's the thing so if you do something 3040 years ago and then someone

says all you did that you you're a bad person I'll use were different yes and you could

have you could have been drunk at the time you might have been with a group of friends

and everyone's egging each other along well certainly if you're a teenager yes because

let's face it are I did some stupid things when I was a teenager and I'm sure you did

as well Steve yes so that's it so sometimes I think it's a little unfair and people have

to apologize for everything nowadays saying sorry Barbra Streisand can you believe it

Barbra Streisand was in trouble yesterday for comments she made about some of the young

men who have come forward now talking about Michael Jackson and she said something yesterday

that she has the right to an opinion but some people disagreed some people agreed but that's

just the way it works so you don't always have to say sorry for things you've said but

on the other side of the coin sometimes you have to say sorry and it's not the easiest

thing to do is it Steve that's true some people think it shows weakness just to say you're

sorry and that it puts you in a weak position yes Albert and other people think it's a sign

of strength and I think that's what you said earlier about people like Donald Trump who

never apologize because they do see it as a sign of weakness yes because whatever they

did at the time it was it was they don't regret it and so they weren't apologized for it and

some people never will because if they apologize they do see it as a sign of weakness but I

think it's a sign of strength if you've done something genuinely wrong yes I think that's

what that politician said on Bill Maher's show he'll apologize if something's wrong

but not if it's an opinion if it's if he's making an opinion about something yes and

people are offended by that he's not going to apologize about that he's gonna apologize

if he's done something wrong and I think that's a fair point yeah because it's you know you

should be able to express your opinion on something and not have to apologize for that

people might get upset about it but you shouldn't have to apologize unless you've you know you

know unless you saying something really offensive yes well that's it if just giving an opinion

about a subject if it's not what everybody agrees with it doesn't mean you have to apologize

I think if you are inciting hatred or violence if you are encouraging people to do something

like that maybe go out and commit a crime if you are encouraging people to do bad things

then that's a different thing altogether but I think opinions should always be shared you

should never be in a position where opinions are suppressed certainly when we talk about

society in general and I could mention I suppose I could mention some countries that do have

very strong censorship laws China is a very good example of that they censor everything

especially the internet so that there are instances where views and opinions are suppressed

but in many countries now of course you can say what you think within reason as long as

you're not encouraging people to do bad things yes I think that's what it comes down to exciting

racism or something like that so the live chats are law the live chat is very busy today

Steve it is indeed a look well yes if you say something that really upsets somebody

but if it's your opinion about something then you don't necessarily have to apologize for

that I don't think but if you if you do something wrong against somebody then then obviously

you know you can do but we're not really discussing that well well I've got lots of words to do

with use of the words sorry yes which I can share with later and also use of the word

trust and we are looking at the live chat right now now is it easy to say sorry Pedro

says there is a song it's hard to say I'm sorry yes there is there is I think it's by

REO Speedwagon so yes there was a famous song called hard to say I'm sorry but Tomic makes

a point there which we just touched on beliefs and opinions that's hate and wrongdoing yes

well there are laws against that hmm and probably quite rightly so you're not allowed to make

racist comments or comments about yes comments about religion that might incite some form

of violent backlash for example yes and and Teresa may our Prime Minister has got herself

into into a bit of hot water ah and a sort of not quite apologize but sort of have had

to well I think she has kind of apologized because she went on if anyone's been watching

that this week Teresa may rent live on television this week to make a statement directly to

the British people it was very short a very short statement which has where she basically

criticized the MPs for not making any decisions over brexit and basically saying it's not

my fault it's the MPs fault and that has got into a lot of hot water or a lot of problems

and it's caused a bit of a backlash and in fact some MPs have suggested that she could

be inciting people to take violent action against politicians yes I think this is what

she's blaming them he's blaming politicians for decisions on brexit not being made and

some MPs have had death threats since she made that statement and I think she's now

having to she's now regretting what she said yes she's been encouraging people to turn

against against MPs MP could you know what happens if somebody got seriously injured

or murdered as a result of that hmm and this is what politicians do they blame Donald Trump

a lot for this for sort of not exactly saying directly he talked directly to the the public

right a lot and people say well you could read between the lines what's he really saying

there is he inciting people to behave in a certain way well he's a clever person he knows

how far he can go yes without actually seeming as if he's encouraging people to do bad things

so this is it but that's that's one of the things about being a politician or someone

who speaks for a living you know how far to go you know the things you can say in the

things you can't say so it's all go as I showed on the screen just will bricks it happen because

we're all still in suspense so it might be next month it might be two months from now

so who knows no one knows at the moment we are still in the dark by the way did you see

the news report this week Steve there is a great news report with people talking about

one of the things that might be affected yeah yes do you remember yes because if if we leave

Europe without a deal and there's what they call the hard brexit there could be shortages

of certain items I mean you would think that food and medicine were the important things

but in fact they've been talking about the possibility of a shortage of toilet paper

there might be there might be a shortage of toilet paper what a disaster that would be

yes so if brexit happens and we don't have a deal then we won't be able to wipe our bottoms

and that well certainly I know I know for mr. Steve mr. Steve that would be a very bad

thing indeed I know what you're suggesting yes I mean this is this is the level of debate

that we now have in the UK that we have to talk about shortages of toilet paper yes by

leaving Europe mean that that shows you the sorry state of affairs that we are now in

but I was genuinely genuinely alarmed I was actually quite nervous so I'm going to to

go into town tomorrow to the local supermarket and I'm going to buy is much toilet paper

as possible I'm going to well I'm going to put it all in the garage so tomorrow Steve

when you come back from work the whole garage will be full of toilet paper you joke mr.

Duncan but in fact that has been happening around this country since that report came

out people now believe there is going to be a shortage of toilet paper and apparently

the shops have been selling out a toilet paper yeah because people are stockpiling it I mean

of all the things to be worried about its toilet paper well I think is a big thing well

you know maybe get your medicines sorted or maybe have a few cans of beans in or something

like that but I'm you know there's always something you can do if you haven't got toilet

paper you know so so what would be the the best alternative then so so if you can't get

toilet paper so so what what's the next thing you could use Steve newspaper Oh Timmy I don't

use that because nobody buys newspapers anymore can't use newspapers what about leaves leaves

yes you have used leaves the leaves are coming on the trees now so we're all right there

yes no the problem is we left we'll have to wait till summer maybe we just don't go to

the toilets until until they've sorted out the chairs your toilet you know I don't want

to walk around with you no we're not joking people think we're joking but we're not people

have been stockpiling toilet paper okay because they think we're going to run out of toilet

paper Ahnold says Connell says we don't use toilet paper here we just use water okay then

well that's it in a lot of countries that's a lot of information well when we to Malaysia

if you remember mr. Duncan they have very good facilities if you have to go for a number

two then there's the hoses which is a very very high genie because toilet paper isn't

really a very good way of maintaining anal hygiene shall we say good well it's not toilet

paper is because it doesn't get rid of everything does it whereas if you have a good squirt

with a hose you clean you know that's I think is is a much more hygienic way of keeping

your nether regions were clean you talked like my auntie nether regions in other words

your bottom you know you know the worst thing Steve is well the worst thing is when you're

using toilet paper and then and then your your finger goes through it Duncan how disgusting

your finger goes through the toilet paper and you end it with little poo on your finger

that's disgusting yes so lots of countries and we've been to them have hoses by the side

of the toilet so you don't use paper you just you know get the water flowing and there you

go yes sir you could just go out into the garden and wipe it on the grass you can wipe

your ass on the grass so saying sorry it's not an easy thing to do we all have to do

it from time to time I personally don't worry about saying sorry sometimes it is a sign

of strength it is people have said that yes I think so it's a it's a car it's a sign of

paper might cost 10 pounds we'll just have to be economical because let's face it when

you when you know you've got a lot of something in stock you tend to waste it don't you if

you think oh I've got ten packs of toilet paper okay you tend to when you go to the

loo you tend to use more of it it's like if you know you've got a lots of water it's as

a water shortage like we had last shakers the hot weather yeah you you you you automatically

use less water so you don't waste as much you take less time in the shower when you

know you've got a big supply of something you tend to waste more of it hmm and when

you know there's a shortage of something you tend to use it more economically yes all right

it's it's like a state of mind that you're in I think so so we're coming up to we're

coming up to Harper's three Steve we're going to have a little break because yesterday well

it it's spring it's definitely spring and yesterday mr. Steve was out in the garden

doing something very special oh hello there spring 2019 has arrived and

as usual it is a very busy time of year especially for mr. Steve because he has to do lots of

chores outside in fact right now as I speak mr. Steve is in the garage doing something

very technical shall we go and have a look and see what he is up to come on then let's

go come on don't be shy let's go oh hello mr. Steve oh hello mr. Duncan so can you tell

us what you are doing today it looks very interesting well this blade has been sharpened

because it was a bit blunt for the lawnmower so I took the blade off myself took it to

this place and they've sharpened it for me they did it for free which is very good because

I bought some oil off the minute and a new spark plug and now I'm going to fit it back

on again and then I need to cut the glass because it's getting a bit long so I'll put

this back on having determined which way round it goes we think I've disconnected the spark

plug for safety just we don't there's accidentally going off although there is no petrol in it

because I haven't used it yet this year but nevertheless we don't undertake any risks

what's that particular thing you've got in your hand now that's a socket wrench and that

can be used for it's a very handy tool for undoing bolts and also for taking the spark

plug out tell us a bit more about the sparkplug mr.

Steve what exactly does the sparkplug do the sparkplug is a very important part of a petrol

engine because as the name suggests the spark goes across the gap in the spark plug and

that ignites the fuel the petrol going into the cylinder and in this particular lawnmower

there's only one cylinder so we only have one spark plug but in a car you might have

four or five or six or eight if you're lucky and so that ignites the the fuel and air mixture

which powers the whole machine is it important to get the gap in the spark plug correct it

is you need to have the correct gap because if it's too wide you won't get a spark at

all and if it's too narrow the spark won't be bright enough or powerful enough and then

you'll lose power in the engine so you need to get it just about right there's a little

bit of tolerance there so it's you don't have to be absolutely spot-on but you have to try

and get it accurate and you also have to have a nice clean spark plug otherwise it won't

fire properly I would clean the spark plug using a small wire brush so what tool do you

use to make sure that the gap on the spark plug is correct I use a feeler gauge so by

using the feeler gauge you can actually tell whether the gap in the spark plug is correct

that's right because the feeler gauge has a whole different range of sizes here which

you can put between the gap and if it fits perfectly you know it's the right gap if it

isn't you can widen it all all or narrow it so this is in millimeters so I've got 0.63

which is that one and then I've got point five about half a millimeter I've got point

two and you can stack them up together but to get the right gap so the gap in that sparkplug

needed to be between point six and point eight milliliters so I've got a point six three

which would have been fine but I just put it added on a point zero four to it just to

get it nearly up to seven point seven which is just where I think it needs to be oh it

looks as if mr. Steve is now ready is going to start mowing

the lawn so now we know why mr. Steve is so excited it's because yesterday he was outside

cutting the lawn [Music] here to Sunday and we have another 25 minutes to go you are more

because it didn't fly off yesterday and you know what that proves that proves once more

how important it is to to film things and take photographs and then you can refer back

to them to remember how you did something to jog your memory mr. Duncan can I show a

word you can't a phrase where we use the word sorry okay and because that relates to what

I was just doing with the lawnmower because obviously we use the word sorry to say you're

apologizing for something but we can we also use the word sorry not to mean you're actually

apologizing but for other reasons so this is a use of the word sorry when you're not

actually apologizing and that is to be safe that better to be safe than sorry so that's

an expression that you use when you're spending what you're what you're suggesting is it's

better to spend time and effort being cautious with your actions than feel regret about being

careless later on so it's it's a phrase that's used to guard people against being reckless

or irresponsible with their behavior so for example when I was putting that blade back

onto the lawn mower you might have looked at that and said all mr. Duncan mr. Steve

you've got the you've got petrol in the machine and the spark plug is still connected surely

you'd better do something about that isn't it better to be safe than sorry so what you're

saying is don't be lacks in your preparation for what you're doing because you might regret

it later here's another use of the expression you'd better secure that ladder properly before

climbing onto the roof it's better to be safe than sorry so you might have been you might

have decided that you wanted to go up onto the roof of your house to fix a tile but you

just wanted to do it quickly so you just put the ladder against the wall I'll just go straight

up there but you didn't properly secure the ladder and it could have fallen you could

have fallen off a ladder and severely hurt yourself because you didn't spend time preparing

beforehand I'm going to really research all my retirement fund options properly before

I invest it's better to be safe than sorry so you might have people often use this expression

with with saving money or investing money because you might just because people don't

know a lot about investing money most people don't so you might decide that you want to

oh I'll just put it into that fund without researching properly so it doesn't have to

be relating to actually safety can also refer to other things like investing money is better

to research where you're going to put your money before because what happens if all the

the stocks drop and you haven't properly prepared so do the research or get somebody else to

do it for you it's better to be safe than sorry in other words in the use of the word

sorry here means is is is regretting regretting later on about something ok yes that's quite

good to be sure to be sure and certain if you are sure and certain then that particular

phrase could be linked to it it is better to be safe than sorry so make sure you are

certain and when you are certain when you are completely sure 100% then there you go

you can go ahead and do whatever it is don't skimp on the preparation for example if you

wanted to do some electrical work if you wanted to repair if there was something wrong with

the television for example in you so I'll just take the back off the television and

and just try and fix that but you hadn't unplugged it oh I'll tell you what's another one people

always say to you know if you're going to change the bag on your on your vacuum cleaner

ok the instructions they'll just tell you to unplug the machine first because or there

might be some some bits of string or something caught up in the blade in the in the in the

carpets we in the blades of the vacuum cleaner and it might stop working and you might just

want to go and pull that obstruction out but what happens if you don't unplug it first.

You might have an accident you might get an electric shock or it might you might accidentally

the machine might start up on its own so you might say it's better to be safe than sorry

make that effort unplug it from the machine first and then you won't mr. Duncan's laughing

I'm not quite sure why I wanted to hear the end of the other story what still taking the

back of the television well you can't do that anymore I was more interested in the story

about taking the back of the TV that's probably not a good year okay can I just finish what

I'm saying I'm more interested to hear about taking the back off the TV then you changing

the bag on the vacuum cleaner to be honest okay TV's don't have packs anymore they don't

you can't you can't take the back off a television anymore okay mr. Tim can I get it it's a bad

example here's another example no no it's your your toaster though it's a good story

you use your toaster for obviously making toast bread turning bread into textures like

a miracle but it gets stuck in there doesn't it sometimes they the bread doesn't come up

and so the temptation is to stick a fork in there to try and get it out but that's dangerous

you might get an electric shock so someone might say to you better to be safe than sorry

turn unplug it first just just eat burnt toast it's not exactly but it doesn't have to refer

just to safety issues it could be like investing money and you might do it recklessly without

properly preparing you know I'm remembering where you put your money I'm remembering the

time when televisions had backs remember these debate have a big thing on the back it was

like it was like made of pressed cardboard yes and used to undo that and then you'd stare

inside the television and it was like another world of wires and circuit boards and valves

valves yes bowls no backbone we haven't got much time you said oh now I've got a lot of

words to get through here that's alright so Steve you have some words to do with being

sorry I believe yes and also to do with trust as well here's another way we can use the

word sorry but we're not using it to apologize because you associate the word sorry with

apologizing but in these phrases it's not used in that context so I'm sorry to say is

an expression that can be used in two ways the first way is when it is used to politely

introduce some bad news or some upsetting or disappointing news so you want to say something

to somebody that's maybe it could upset them or disappoint them or it could be bad news

but you want to say it in a way that doesn't upset them too much so you use the phrase

I'm I'm sorry - sir here before you say the phrase and that almost prepares somebody for

the bad news so you're sort of apologizing for giving them bad news but it's not your

fault that you're giving them bad news so you might say it's to soften the blow of bad

news really so I'm sorry to say that we are going to have to make redundancies in the

company so you're making redundancies it's bad news but you're trying to soften the blow

a bit by abusing the phrase I'm sorry to say in front of that I'm sorry to say that Peter

has been badly injured in a car accident and won't be back to work for two weeks but it

can also be you to say that something is disappointing that so that's when you use the phrase at

the beginning of a sentence I'm sorry to say that and then you're going to give a bit of

bad news but if you use it at the end of a sentence it's more more regretful more that

you disappointed in something so you might say he didn't accept the job I'm sorry to

say you might say the play should have been very good but the acting was very poor I'm

sorry to say so that's not that you're really giving bad news it's just that it's something

disappointing so you say that you use the phrase I'm sorry to say at the end of the

sentence rather than at the beginning I'm sorry to say mr. Duncan won't be on next week

if I regret having to say yes you are on next week but that was just an example yes I am

here next week I'm sorry to say that brexit is a mess now don't be sorry about that you

can use the phrase I'm sorry to hear that it's an expression of regret and consolation

is when you want to sympathize with somebody we use this a phrase a lot English people

use this phrase an awful lot oh I'm sorry - I'm sorry I can't read I think if I can't

read the screen anymore I'm sorry to hear that John's cat died last week oh I'm sorry

to hear that I bumped my car on the way into work oh I'm sorry to hear that we English

people use that a lot to sort of console people and and to make it look as though you're empathizing

with them actually people often say it quite insincerely it's like an automatic thing that

English people say isn't it mr. Duncan oh I'm sorry to hear that you don't probably

really mean it but you just want to make people feel better hmm I'm sorry to hear that my

my dog is not feeling very well at the moment I'm sorry to hear that mr. Jenkins my dog

isn't feeling very well he feels a bit rough that was it that was a joke you see I know

it was a joke but you talked you talked all over it I lost my job last week oh I'm sorry

to hear that that's what we say as people say that a lot Steve is that your sincere

face I'm sorry to hear that but quite often people would say that but really they're not

interested and if they were to if they were really sorry they might then follow it up

with other questions to find out what what what really happened and to sympathize with

you maybe offer advice but quite often we don't it's like when you meet people in in

in England in fact we've got a neighbor who's American and and she often says that when

you meet people in the UK the first thing they usually say is hello how are you we say

that a lot how are you how are you and we say it automatically we don't often really

want them to say anything back it's when you phone somebody up you say hello how are you

and they say I'm fine how are you and I say yes I'm fine too it's almost like convention

you've got to say that in the UK you don't necessarily mean it you don't really interest

it but you just say it anybody if I think that's okay it's there's nothing wrong with

that I think it's as you said the other week it pushes the oil move the oil in society

which is a phrase aren't trying to reintroduce it moves it keeps the wheels of society carry

that's it yes it's just a pleasantry a pleasantry I'm sorry I asked is a sarcastic comment that

you use when you don't really mean it when you're bored or upset or if you're upset somebody

so it's a you ask a question to somebody you ask a question and then because of the answer

that you get from them you regret it you don't really you didn't expect them to say what

you expected or they went on far too long and then you actually regret it so you would

then use the phrase so I'm sorry I asked or if they say something say you ask something

about somebody and you might say oh oh um how's your job at the moment and then they

come back with the reply and they start sort of shouting at you and and and and being very

upset and always you know blaming you for what you the question you've asked you might

turn around to them and say oh I'm sorry I asked yeah you can say aye well it's kind

of saying I regret asking yes you would get asking them if somebody might somebody might

you might say well um how you know what's your relationship like with Jane now you know

is it better and then they go off into this long rambling story and you get bored stiff

and then you might turn to somebody after they've got and you might say I'm sorry I

asked no bit like earlier when I when I asked Steve about cars I was really sorry that I

asked it's a sarcastic comment is made sarcastically here's another one a sorry state or the full

expression a sorry state of affairs it's a particularly unfortunate unpleasant or upsetting

situation or series of events or or an event a sorry state of affairs the business has

been in a sorry state of affairs ever since that new boss took over a sorry state of affairs

so the businesses is is is not doing well it's it it's gone into unfortunate situation

things aren't going very well the government is in a sorry state of affairs over brexit

so it's a it's a pitiful sort of regretful situation that we're in over brexit and the

government are in a sorry state of affairs over it I said the other day mayhem mayhem

I thought that was quite funny yes that's a joke nobody's used that no I haven't heard

anyone say that bricks it is mayhem mayhem mayhem Teresa mayhem you see anyone say that

I might be the first person in the world to ever say that so a sorry state of affairs

to sort of events but if you're in a sorry state you can you that expression is more

used towards an a person or an individual so if a person is in a sorry state it means

there are a pitiful poor sad condition Alex has been in a sorry state since his wife left

him so he's sort of probably deceptor Chevrolet is not eating properly he's not shaving he's

taking time off work he's sick he's in a sorry state so he's sort of you might feel sorry

for him you look in the right sorry state what's the matter so if you look in a sorry

state you'll be sort of you can might look sad or upset or a bit disheveled and shaven

that's sort of well if you're a man and you were he of course you can feel sorry for somebody

and that's got two meanings if you feel sorry for somebody the first meaning is to empathize

or feel compassion for another person and their problems I feel sorry for Alice since

she lost her job so you feel sorry for her you're upset because she's probably got no

money she might have lost her place where she lives some you know you feel sorry for

because you know she's upset I feel sorry for all the victims of the terrible typhoon

that happened this week so you're genuinely feeling upset so you're not apologizing again

the use of the word sorry here is not to apologize it's just to to feel compassion for another

person or people but it also can mean to pity somebody as well so if you pity someone and

you're not really showing any empathy or compassion because it was their own fault so if something

happens it's their own fault you pity them and then you might use this phrase correctly

to them I feel sorry for you you don't really feel sorry for them but you might say it I

feel sorry for you how can you hope to change your life when you're still taking drugs I

feel sorry for you you don't really feel sorry for them because it's their own fault that

you just used the expression in that way it's almost like you'll be nasty to them any thing

you'd like to add about that mr. Duncan no that's great no I think so far yes sorry is

is one of those expressions and also emotion don't forget so so apologizing feeling regret

is also emotion so it's not just a word it's not just something you you say or you show

but also it is an actual genuine emotion to actually be sorry to feel sorry yes you you

offer your apology you apologize for something so maybe you are late I'm sorry I'm late so

maybe in that sense you are just saying I'm sorry I should have been here sooner but unfortunately

I am late for which I apologize I am sorry sorry that I'm late but in the expressions

I was using there you're not apologizing the word sorry is is not used to apologize it

in those situations no so we're just users using the words sorry sorry to mean yes you

you feel compassion or you feel pity for somebody but if you use the you can use that expression

on yourself you can feel sorry for yourself hmm if you feel sorry for yourself that's

that that's a state of mind that you're in where you pity yourself and you're being quite

self indulgent something's happened in your life and you go into a state of reflection

and you're constantly talking about how bad that thing is that happened to you and you

get very emotionally upset and down but often it's it's it's a bit overdone it's exaggerated

you're you're feeling sorry for yourself are you feeling upset but over something that's

happened and really it's a bit out of proportion to the event and so people will often try

and break you out of that by saying will you stop feeling sorry for yourself it's a month

since you broke up with your girlfriend it's time you got over it and moved on lots of

people break up with their boyfriends or girlfriends just get over it so you can overdo it in terms

of getting upset over something and quite often we do that don't we we feel sorry for

ourselves something bad happens to us and we pity ourselves and we want other people

to feel sorry for us and give us compassion and people will only do that for so long they

expect you to move on and get over it so if you lost your if you if you lost your job

for example you might get people and will feel sorry for you for a period of time but

then if you don't bother going out to look for a new job and you just sit in the house

and you're constantly phoning up your friends and moaning and groaning and saying or everything's

gone wrong since I lost my job or I can't believe that happened and oh and you want

people to get around and feel take you out for meals and all that sort of thing and after

a while people will people will get sick of that and they'll say oh stop feeling sorry

for yourself it's time you did something about it and moved on recall it self-pity self-pity

that's right so that's that's uses of the word sorry when you're not really apologizing

and I have three other things here okay that to do with trust because we were talking about

that earlier yes shall we have a quick look at the live chat because there are a lot of

people on there so I think it's it's also nice and fair to have a little look at the

live chat so let's see who is on lots of people are chatting away mayhem Oh Massimo likes

the word mayhem mayhem chaos confusion to create a probe where no one knows what is

going on there is mayhem that's a great word yes Sergio yes that's fine I'm sorry to hear

that I'm fine I'm sorry to hear that the Jeff says mr. Duncan will pout and sulk until Steve

says his sorry I say yes you might be right there actually says where is everyone sure

what he means by that I think I think he's I think Pedro was concerned that not many

people were talking on the live chat but everyone's concentrating on Steve they're all hanging

on every word yes you were saying maybe they're feeling sorry for me well that makes a change

right I think there are lots of alternatives but they are ephemeral mr. Duncan has 13 years

teaching English on the Internet we are all his followers I don't know what that is about

but people are saying that your globe is spinning the wrong way of course it's spinning the

wrong way it's it's a brexit globe it's going the wrong way it's going backwards that's

the reason why the reason why it goes that way is because it looks better on screen if

it goes the other way it doesn't look as good because I wanted it to go the same way as

the can you see the text going across the screen at the bottom oh yes so I wanted the

globe to go the same way as that the writing as it moves underneath mmm so you see what

I've done there so that's the reason why but in fact that isn't the way the earth actually

rotates so we all know that we're all very aware that the the earth rotates the other

way I I do know that it isn't a mistake now the chat is very busy says Pedro a lot of

people we have laser or less are watching in Kazakhstan oh that's very by the way Steve

it's Mother's Day next week I know are we going to go and see your mother on Saturday

we're going on Saturday not Sunday they're going to mr. Steve's we're going to see mr.

Steve's mother somebody might say oh I'm sorry to hear that yes we're going to have a day

with mr. Steve's mum it might be suggesting if we go if we if we said to if somebody said

oh I've got to go and I've got to go and see my mother next week and you might say well

I'm sorry to hear that that's a bit of a joke because you probably know that your friend

doesn't really want to go and see their mother and but you might say well I'm sorry you're

you're empathizing with them that they're having to do something they don't want to

do not that I'm suggesting I don't want to see my mother I'm not suggesting that at all

hmm even though it sounds like it yes so three quick words of that trust mr. Duncan okay

then Pedro likes the flags of the world so phrases that have the word trust in them he's

the first one there we go not to trust somebody as far as you can throw with them Laura's

all right hiya I can't read it now not to trust somebody so if you don't trust somebody

as far as you can throw them it means you don't trust them at all because if you were

to try and pick somebody up and throw them you wouldn't be able to throw them very far

so that phrase is used to indicate that you don't trust somebody at all so the use of

that in a in a sentence for example don't tell John about our plans I wouldn't trust

him as far as I could throw him so you mean that you've got some plans but you don't want

to tell John because he might reveal them to somebody else because you don't trust him

so it's just a phrase to really push home the fact you don't trust if you say to somebody

I don't trust you as far as I could throw you it's an it would be an insult because

you don't trust them because they've proved in the past to be distrustful in some way

the equivalent phrase of that you could use the phrase I don't trust somebody an inch

an inch of course is a measure that we use in the UK about two and a half centimetres

so I don't know whether on the continent they use the phrase I don't trust you a centimeter

but we use the phrase here I don't trust you an inch so in inches about that much as I

said back to now centimetres so if you don't trust somebody that little bit it means you

don't trust them at all I don't trust you an inch I don't trust you as far as I could

throw you which isn't very far so you don't trust somebody at all so that's quite a commonly

used expression earth I don't trust politicians as far as I could throw them you know when

you were giving your example of something that's one inch long yes I wasn't sure what

you were going to show it's just an expression mr. Duncan do you have anything else you can

show us if you take something on trust it means you believe or have faith in something

without any real evidence or proof to take something on trust for example bill owes me

a lot of money but he wants me to take it on trust that he will pay me back so bill

owes you a lot of money and he's got no proof these that I ever pay you back but he's just

saying you'll just have to take it on trust that I'm going to pay you back you'll have

to trust me in other words that I'm going to pay you back how do you know how do I know

that you will complete compile start again how do I know that you will complete that

job on time well you will just have to take me on trust or take it on trust the equivalent

another equivalent phrase to use though would be to take someone's word so I if you could

replace the phrase take it on trust with take my word for it or take me on my word have

faith have faith either is a controversial one to end with don't convert like this one

this is a phrase that people sometimes use have you ever heard people say trust in God

and everything will be all right that's an idiom I know but you he'd do it people say

that but here's an idiom trust in God but keep your powder dry okay you heard of that

one mr. dunk what's your traveling God and keep your powder dry rest in God and keep

the powder dries I like underwear I know it refers to gunpowder okay so what that phrase

is saying is give yourself over to a higher power to trust that something will happen

that you want to happen but be prepared to act when it does happen so in other words

it's actually saying you've if you believe in a higher power to help you in your cause

whatever that might be it might be to get a new job it might be to win a battle but

that isn't everything you've still got to be prepared to do something yourself as well

you know you can't expect a higher power God to do everything for you you've got to do

something so that phrase was used by apparently Oliver Cromwell many many hundreds of years

ago so it's so yeah gunpowder is obviously something that's used to in guns to presume

bullets a gunpowder used to be used over in old flintlock guns but if it was wet it wouldn't

work so it was just saying you know if you want to trust in a higher power you can do

so but be prepared to act when conditions become favorable for you so that's it was

so glad you explained what gun power directly well I know but maybe some people don't because

because you know it's it's so ambiguous I'm worried about my job it interview tomorrow

well trust in God but keep your gun sorry I don't think I think so it must be an expression

that you leave I don't know what books you're looking at but there are no dictionaries this

say that it is a well-known expression mr. Duncan okay do you want to know anything about

Oliver Cromwell well you know all about Oliver Cromwell yes Oliver Cromwell he was he was

a pesky bugger that's right were you used to work in a National Trust property he didn't

like Catholics he didn't like Catholics no it wasn't a fan but he was he was he was a

sort of a politician and military leader wasn't he and so he said that to his troops and so

it's so it's so we are led to believe it might not be true so the whole thing the whole message

is keep your gun powder dry if you remember nothing about today's lesson remember that

so so after the lesson has finished going check your gunpowder and make sure it isn't

in a damp room but Oliver Cromwell of course was alive in 16 you know sixteen forties that

sort of era wasn't he so right they used to use gunpowder then instead of bullets okay

and so what he was he was going he probably into battle and he said to his troops you

know we could win this but you know because they used to believe obviously very religious

people trust in God that we win this battle but be prepared to keep your gun powder dry

I actually I've never heard anyone use that expression but I did find it on the internet

so I thought I would I would I would actually give that example out next week when we were

in town we will use that where we go to the local supermarket we will reintroduce that

expression they can I have a can of beans please and don't forget trusting God keep

your gun powder dry now you might say you know you might be going for a job interview

more than you and you might say yeah somebody but you might say one word about my job interview

tomorrow I'm not sure if I'm going to get it and somebody might use that expression

trusting God but keep your gun powder dry in other words if a higher power wants you

to have that job you will Burt you've got to be prepared for the interview to to answer

all the questions that might come up yes you might be saying this if if it was the 18th

century exactly what I found it so maybe in some maybe we don't use it in England anymore

but perhaps they use it in other countries is anyone let's have a one last look at the

got about ten years supply of food yes I think it must have been very excited when it first

realised that it was going to live next door to half a tonne of peanuts so there it is

though has to go mr. Duncan you do realise I'm sorry - same as Duncan but I'm going to

have to remove that Mouse you can't take the mouse away Mouse T we'll have to go I've already

told you all you have to do is leave the door open as the weather gets warmer and warmer

then the mouse will go oh it's quite nice outside I think I will go outside again and

run around I don't think it will mr. Duncan it's found itself a nice little home with

lots of food don't you dare kill it I won't kill it I won't kill it but I will catch it

and put it outside yeah all you have to do is just just take the logs away and I'm sure

it will just run away yes well it's gonna do it together we kind of mice living bonito

but don't forget to do it when the weather is nicer because a lot of animals are still

hibernating you see so that one that one should actually be hibernating but it isn't it's

awake I want to know how it got in yes it was just sneaky and PC it must have sneaked

in in one day anyway it's time to get out to go it's go to past four we've run well

over yes don't worry I'm sorry to say don't worry about it we still have lots of people
