back baby hello and welcome it is sunday it is a fun day it is a beautiful day in fact

here in england right now and oh i have to say it really does feel as if spring is in

the air

what is it about the season of spring that makes me want to dance and sing is it the

colour bursting out with glee or the first buzz buzz of the bumblebee the daffodils waving

their colours as they sway what a joy to be out on a springtime day the nights become

shorter and the days grow long the birds begin calling their mating song spring is to me

a time to give birth a time to replenish the air and the earth so take in a deep breath

and i'm sure you'll agree that spring is a glorious season to see

hmm it is true and as a way of proving that look outside there is mr steve right now in

the garden so that is that is actually steve outside right now and you can see he's working

very hard he couldn't resist going outside because the weather is so nice today in fact

there he goes he is now wandering off bye bye mr steve oh no no he can't make up his

mind oh oh i think i think steve has a runny nose that's what's going on there we will

be seeing steve a little bit later on go on steve that's it off you go here we go again

you happy are you feeling happy today i really hope so it is a glorious day i can't quite

believe how nice the weather is at the moment outside it is amazing it really does feel

as if spring is in the air and the daffodils are starting to open their beautiful yellow

buds and soon they will all be in flower it really does feel as if spring is in the air

here in england and i hope it's nice where you are it's a glorious day sunshine is all

around and well there it is i think this particular view speaks for itself the sun is shining

it is still cold i have to be honest with you it isn't warm it's not warm outside but

it is nice anyway so i'm not going to complain i know what happens quite often with us english

people living in england we often like to complain about the weather but i'm not going

to i am not going to say anything bad about the weather today it is absolutely lovely

it's nice to have you here today yes we have made it all the way to the end of another

have you missed me have you missed me at all have you i hope so i hope you've missed me

well maybe just a little bit i have had a lovely week i've been arresting myself i've

been trying my best to get my voice working again for those who have been watching and

certainly if you were watching last month you will know that i was struggling with my

28 days of live streams last month i made it through although my voice did not so i

have been resting my voice i've also been preparing some new lessons oh i'm not sure

if i'm going to tell you about it today but there is something that i'm working on right

now and it is keeping me very busy so new lessons coming up i have to film them i have

to edit them and then i have to put them here on youtube so all of that takes time unfortunately

because it's just me you see it's me by myself i am on my own steve has gone back into the

house now because he will be with us a little bit later on in fact if i'm if i'm very careful

i might be able to to to put my camera actually in a different position let me just see if

i can do that because i want to share the beautiful nature today that we are enjoying

outside let's see if i can do this live i don't normally reposition my camera when it's

when it's broadcasting live but i'm going to try and do it now so just a moment you

will see what i'm about to do hmm oh very nice

there you go was it worth it was it worth the wait i'm not sure so out in the garden

you can see that the daffodils are slowly coming out it's still very cold but at least

the sun is shining and before anyone asks i'm not going to tell you what is wrong with

my face

something very strange is happening to my face can you see i don't know what this is

by the way i still think that this is something to do with my beard but i have all sorts of

strange things on my face after i shaved this morning it was very painful and sensitive

i don't know what's going on i've put some of mr steve's cream on my face to try and

soothe the pain but it's still there so i don't know what it is anyway enough of my

face

the english language is a very interesting thing it would appear that many people nowadays

have become very interested in the english language so that's one of the reasons why

i do this english addict for all those who can't get enough of this beautiful language

a week every sunday from 2 p.m uk time there are some new lessons coming so what i'm doing

at the moment during the week i'm actually preparing some new lessons and that means

i have to do a lot of writing which i hate it is the worst part of anything i i think

most people even if you are a writer for movies or tv quite often people will say that writing

writing is the hardest thing to do if you are sitting down and quite often you have

to have some sort of inspiration something to inspire you and sometimes it is very hard

to find inspiration when you are going to create something in writing so yes i also

have the same problem i i don't like sitting down and writing or typing i i find it sometimes

very exhausting and maybe i'm very similar to other people when you have to do something

sometimes i will put it off i will put it off again and again i will do it tomorrow

i will do it next week i will do it next month and you put things off so that is something

i often do especially when it comes to writing i don't like preparing scripts i find it's

sometimes very frustrating but once i've done that i can do the fun stuff so the fun things

include filming and editing and of course presenting so i love those things but the

thing i really hate is writing preparing scripts i find sometimes my brain goes completely

dead and i have nothing there it's not the first time anyone said that about me by the

way it's not the first time hello oh can i say hello to victoria nice to see you back

as well have you missed me by the way have you missed me did you miss me how much was

it this much or was it this much please tell me please please give me some sort of idea

that's what they say they say that when you miss someone your heart becomes swollen with

for a while and then they come back then you often feel very glad very happy to see them

again absence makes the heart grow fonder very nice of course it is march and march

is always an interesting month for me i always like to think back to my time in china because

that is when i went to china i went to china to teach english as a second language in march

2003 18 years ago so today we are going to take a little bit of time to look at some

photographs some memories of my time in china and that is coming up later on also we will

have an excerpt from one of my full english lessons and maybe we will have another look

at some more springtime views what about where you are how is the weather how is it is it

changing is it becoming nicer is it becoming milder does it feel as if a new season is

approaching because it really does here i have to say it really just feel as if a new

to say the weather today is absolutely amazing in fact i feel like closing my eyes and drifting

off to one of those classic spring days that we often have in england

very nice and there it is right now looking out of the window the daffodils have not come

out yet we are still waiting for the daffodils to open but you can see they are now coming

up and they are preparing to open their beautiful yellow flowers and the view today is amazing

the world hi my name is junia and i hope you are doing good i want to improve my english

well one of the reasons why i do this live is to give you a chance to write and type

and also listen and share your love of english with everyone else around the world that is

the reason why i do this in fact i have been teaching english here on youtube for nearly

15 years and 18 years ago i went to a very special place now 18 years ago it was very

unusual to travel to places like china so way back in 2003 not many people were going

to china it was still a place that people were not willing or able to go to for various

reasons however i went to work in china in march of 2003 so i'm going to share a couple

of photographs and then we are going to have a look at one of my full english lessons then

mr steve will arrive then we will look at some more photographs and then we will be

playing the sentence game as well so would you like to see the first ever photograph

taken when i arrived in china now first of all the quality isn't very good but you get

the idea so there it is that is the first ever photograph taken on my mobile phone when

i arrived in china and if you can see if you can look very closely you might notice that

i'm standing in a certain place i am in tiananmen square and i was talking to steve about this

last night when i first arrived in china when i first stepped into tiananmen square surrounded

by hundreds of people it was the most amazing feeling i'm going to be honest with you whatever

your political feelings are whatever your attitude is i still remember that moment when

i i stepped into a a place that i'd seen so many times

in my geography lessons and history lessons at school but i never dreamt that one day

i would actually be standing in that place so there is the first photograph ever taken

of me when i arrived in beijing in march of 2003

18 years ago and i suppose it's worth mentioning that i also started my youtube channel whilst

i was still in china so i actually started doing this on youtube whilst i was still teaching

in china hello to wilson yes my phone was a nokia phone you are right i can show you

the actual phone would you like to have a look you are right wilson yes it it is a nokia

phone or it was i don't have it anymore but one thing you will notice i look very young

i know what you're going to say mr duncan you look so young well it was 18 years ago

we have all got a little bit older in 18 years but yes wilson you are right it it was a nokia

phone that i took that photograph on i don't know how you knew that how did you know that

that was very well spotted now i do know that way back in 2003 i think nokia phones were

the first phones to have high quality cameras am i right i think so i'm almost certain that

nokia phones were the first phones to have high quality cameras although they are nothing

compared to the cameras we have nowadays to be honest with you the technology has come

on a very long way mr steve is going to be with us in a few moments but we are going

to take a short break whilst i show you one of my full english lessons and yes can i say

something now i'm going to say it

this is the news this is the big news

i am going to make another series of full english lessons that's it that's the news

so that's what i'm working on at the moment i have some scripts in development i am going

to do some filming hopefully if the weather stays nice i will be able to do it outside

and there will be some new full english lessons i am going to make another 10 full english

lessons so that is coming up over the next few weeks right now we are going to take a

look at a classic full english lesson these are some excerpts from full english number

six and we will hear about many things including compound words what is a compound word and

then after this it's mr steve

there are words in english that have been formed by joining one or more separate words

together these are called compound words to compound is to push and mix more than one

thing together to form something new a compound word is the result of joining two or more

words together many other languages besides english have compound words in them there

are many compound words in english commonly used compound words include inside upon into

because another cannot without a noun can perfectly describe the use of something as

a compound word dog house bird cage fish bowl tow boat dishcloth worktop screwdriver a compound

word can be formed by using more than two words examples include insomuch notwithstanding

counterclockwise plainclothesmen aforementioned henceforth nevertheless it would be fair to

say that compound words are commonplace in english you might even say that they are everywhere

you may have noticed that many words in english have more than one meaning or use a good example

of this is the word sense at first glance this seems like a simple basic word but in

fact sense has many connotations we can make sense of something which means to understand

it we can sense that something is wrong which means to feel or perceive an approaching danger

or event we can be senseless or do something senseless this means that the action has no

motive or justification a senseless act is an action that is irrational and unreasonable

to say that something makes no sense is to express bewilderment and confusion none of

this makes any sense to me then of course we can express the opposite and say that something

makes perfect sense that action is justified it all makes perfect sense to me

can you see what i'm playing with here these are foxes well in fact they are just models

but i really like the way they have been made the person who made them has really captured

their character we can describe a person as being foxy this means that the person in question

can be sly and cunning just like a fox there is even the phrase as cunning as a fox which

describes this type of person perfectly a sly and cunning person might also be described

as sharp sneaky shrewd wily crafty and devious that person is as cunning as a fox by the

way a young fox is called a vixen and a group of foxes can be referred to as a skulk or

a leash

can you see what i'm carrying here i have an arm full of logs these are for the wood

burner in my house i burn these logs in a log burner the word log can be used in many

ways as a verb it means to record the details of something normally in writing you write

down the details of something you log it a journal can be described as a log to chop

down trees on a large scale and then sell the wood is logging to sign in or enter your

password on a computer is to log in or log on then there is the noun that describes the

pieces of wood that have been chopped up a single log a log pile or an arm full of logs

all ready to go on the log burner so as to keep me nice and warm during this cold spell

if you are a regular viewer then you will know that i love food can you guess what my

most favourite snack is the thing i like to nibble on the most the one food i often get

a craving for okay i will tell you my most favourite snack is cheese yes it is true i

love to nibble on cheese there are many reasons why i love cheese firstly there are so many

varieties so many flavours of cheese from mild to extra mature cheeses can vary in shape

and colour too some are round and white while others can be square and red some cheeses

have a strong odour

cheese is made from the milk of a cow or goat each type of cheese has its own name this

name normally relates to where it was originally produced for example cheddar cheese was first

made in cheddar somerset which is in the uk red leicester cheese was first made in leicestershire

and is red in color one of the smelliest cheeses must be the variety known as stinking bishop

this cheese is also produced here in the uk in the county of gloucestershire country has

its own famous cheese france has its camembert cheese greece has its feta cheese which is

made from goat's milk italy has its parmesan cheese which is normally grated and sprinkled

onto pasta or you could try some mozzarella cheese which is used to make pizza topping

there are many hundreds of varieties of cheese around the world all of which i would love

to try but sadly i cannot as i would put on weight and get very very fat when people take

photographs of their friends and family they normally ask the subjects to say cheese as

it encourages everyone being photographed to smile cheese i must say all this talk of

cheese is making me feel quite hungry

that's it okay steve when i tell you not to go any further but if i say a word i like

to explain it you see i don't know what's happened i think this is all related yeah

to when i shave when i shaved after having a beard and something very weird has happened

to my skin we were looking at some old photographs earlier because this month i always i don't

know why whenever march comes i always think of

love no i think of my time in china because march was when i went to china i always remember

because it was the same day that the us invaded iraq that is true it's the same day so i was

i was going off to fly to china on the same day that the iraq war started in 2003 or should

i say part two of the iraq war because yes that was two things for me to worry about

i didn't like the fact that you were in the air in an airplane yes uh flying well i presume

the plane must have gone round that area of the world but it was a potential risk so you

were going and there was a war going on which was yes well a war had started it started

on the same day i don't know what it is about me and aeroplanes whenever i go in an airplane

there is always some drama some sort of drama or disaster and that's all i'm saying about

that but yes it'll be 18 years can you believe 18 years since i went to china it's a long

time mr duncan has a lot of water under the bridge okay since then yes a little idiom

i thought i would throw that one in okay they're free good so on this a lot of life has passed

that time it certainly has 18 years there are probably people i i think there must be

people watching at the moment who are younger than 18 maybe and and so so it's it's for

it's longer ago than your life well that's interesting uh because um at work okay as

we know yes okay steve just referring back to the fact that i have reached a significant

age okay um and i've been my job is sales which i've been doing for 33 years now 32

33 years now a long time and there are people at work who are younger than that so you know

their entire there are some people you know they weren't born when i started uh my sales

career 32 years ago so it gets a bit frightening when when people start to say how long have

you been i wasn't born then and it's a bit of a shock to the system it is i still look

younger than them though well in your opinion

very very modest but yes it is strange well it's always weird when we think of ourselves

at our age that we could have children who are in their maybe in their late 20s or or

even in their 30s so i always find that quite amazing when you meet meet people of our age

and they've got like three or four children but they're around our age and suddenly you

think that's incredible so so i'm old enough to be maybe the father of two or three kids

so that's the thing that always blows my mind a little bit to be honest although i have

no kids come here as far as i know palmyra points out that uh interesting you should

mention iraq pope francis is currently in iraq i think it's the first time a pope has

ever visited iraq yes so that's quite a significant event well i think all the wars will stop

i think everyone will join together in peace and happiness because the pope is there and

i think all of the fighting all of the wars will stop because because he said come on

stop it stop stop fighting so they will they will i think i think that's it all the pope

needs to do is to travel around the world everywhere and tell people stop it just just

stop it and and within three or four weeks we will have world peace well religion's caused

enough wars over the uh over the centuries so it's about time they actually try to stop

one in your opinion yeah i think i think uh it's not just my opinion oh yes um interesting

i like to read the comments that are on the live stream before i come on okay people are

talking about uh well santorina mentions daffodils daffodils yes we have some daffodils coming

out in the garden would you like to see them so this is the live view of some actual daffodils

in the garden right now and this is the area where mr steve was working earlier but look

at that isn't that lovely some lovely daffodils opening their little heads and yes there are

many different varieties many different types of daffodil i've got a comment okay from saturino

about daffodils something i didn't know the the name of a daffodil is that narcisso we

call it narcissus here narcissus narcissus or narcisso and i didn't realize that that

is the greek named after a greek god who fell in love with himself he was so beautiful that's

that's where narcissists can sit so a person who is a narcissist is a person who can't

stop looking at themselves they are in love with their own reflection of of course there

was a greek god and i and he he he fell in love with his own reflection and it didn't

it didn't end with it very well well those daffodils don't last long do they it didn't

last it didn't end well i don't know what it is about greek mythology but quite often

if you think you're having a bad day you want to see what these greek gods had to go through

they were always having some sort of problem or calamity or they were they were flying

up too close to the sun or they were they were falling into a river because they tried

to to hug their own reflection well you know the times were tough back then thousands of

years ago but i mean you know a daffodil uh doesn't last for long does it no when it's

out they only last about a week and then they've gone but isn't that the same with all flowers

i i think flowers are are a very very interesting type of of organism oh i like that word organism

something that exists lives grows as an organism so i always think there's something slightly

sad because you have all of that effort for the plant to push through the earth and open

slowly and then you can see it's beautiful flower but it doesn't last very long so quite

often you will find that some flowers they will certain flowers will just open and then

they will wither away quite quickly and daffodils is one of them if you try to cut daffodils

out of the garden and put them into a vase in your house they don't last for very long

intelligent says is there a word for dry flowers that have been cut uh so yes you can you can

cut dried flowers cut flowers and dry them and you can keep them they're preserved i

suppose you would say just preserved you just call them dry flour there isn't a another

word that i know of yes uh preserved just dried flowers there isn't really another word

for that not as far as i'm aware but yeah yes it is common to to take flowers and then

you'll leave them in a place or or even heat them you can dry them out artificially and

then they stay preserved forever they don't look as nice i'll be honest with you they

don't look as nice as fresh flowers my mother doesn't like dried flowers no reminds her

of death your mother is very fussy about flowers she doesn't like lilies either or either but

but but lily's i have the same thought as your mum they're very strong pungent something

that's very strong is it gets up you know it's a pungent they've got a very strong smell

and they're often used at funerals here in the uk at least yes you often see people throwing

them onto onto the funeral car i don't remember that yeah but just in churches and things

they often have lilies and uh so you know you don't want to be reminded of death then

don't put lilies in your house well you've done it three times so that's good plus also

that you can get the the the stamens in a lily okay uh can really cause problems because

the the pollen drops off and it has a strong dye in it okay like a color yes it's like

an orangey color so it can stain your clothes it can stain things it might look as if you

you're a heavy smoker yes exactly we've got two people from mexico today hello to mexico

we also have sebastian as well can i can i say can i say hello to someone no can i say

i believe yes i think so i think i think international women's day is coming up so i thought it was

today i know i know it's sometime this month so i'm sure this month it is also international

women's day

so we won't say hello to the women today but we will save it for when it actually is women's

day going back to flowers in the uk next sunday it's mother's day uh so i know my mother isn't

watching so i can safely say without fear of her knowing that i've ordered some flowers

for her through the internet and they will be delivered uh they won't deliver on sunday

so they will deliver them on saturday and there's some chocolates in there as well because

of course we still can't visit our families i'm not in the bubble of my mother so my sister

is because she lives nearby but i can't visit so i've ordered her some flowers online with

a box of italian chocolate now i don't know what those are like it didn't say but uh all

i do know is there's alcohol in some of them i'm jealous i know i can't wait i am a little

bit jealous i'm going to be honest with you i feel jealous i wish i was a mother i really

do well some people do do refer to me as a mother but i think that is a different context

according to my wife daffodils are different from narcissus uh oh i'm not sure about that

i think it might be the same group yes similar flowers have to look that one up mr duncan

i did talk about this in my spring lesson and there are many varieties many different

types many different colours as well some there are white daffodils there are yellow

daffodils there are even dark red daffodils and sometimes you can have them of different

colours so maybe part of the daffodil flower is one colour and then the other part is another

colour so so yes there are many different varieties of daffodil gustavo's in argentina

are flying around in the sky i am going to get a ticket not not first class i can't afford

that but i'm going to maybe i will smuggle myself onto the plane inside a suitcase or

be honest i am intrigued very intrigued by your wife's cooking we saw we saw the pizza

the other week very nice and now we have another type of cake another another type of food

that i would love to try steve guess what can i just say one thing intelligent uh says

what do you call those little flowers i think you mean that strike through the snow in a

forest i think you're probably talking about snow drops are they white uh we might have

a picture of snow drops yes we might we might not but now mr duncan now it's three o'clock

and yes for all those who are fans of flags here are those lovely colourful flapping flags

of the world

i hope you enjoyed those flags of the world yes although zershid thinks there's one missing

from uzbekistan so we'll have to look into that i'm going to have to you know you know

what it would be very difficult can i just say how difficult it would be to to find your

flag and also put it into the video but i might try i will have a look just to make

sure i need to check and verify to make sure that i haven't missed uzbekistan out of the

flags of the world if i have i will try to put that right and if anybody else thinks

their flag is missing please let us know because you know it's an ongoing work of art i would

say i was mr duncan's flags of the world i think i tried i tried to include all of them

but but you know sometimes you just forget or you you don't actually recall every single

flag that exists in the world but i tried at least i tried steve would you like to see

a photograph of me in china on on one of my first days have i already seen it well you've

already seen it yes i think you've seen it well go on then here we go so there i am sitting

in my in my little chair and this is this is just a couple of days after i arrived who

is that did you say that it's me can you believe it 18 years ago your adam's apple is very

prominent okay that's good uh that adam's apple that's that that's the that's the most

you can actually take from that photograph is my adam's apple anyway so one of the things

that is interesting about the area in which i moved to is well we often think of chinese

ghost towns as being something that came around in the late 2000s but in fact there were chinese

ghost towns before then in fact the place where i was living was one of them so you

can see here lots of new buildings but these buildings were all empty there was a whole

area of brand new buildings but they were all empty and they stood empty for around

two years before anyone started moving into them so it is interesting to note that those

ghost cities that people sometimes talk about and we often think of it as something that

happened after china became more developed or more open and more prosperous but in fact

they did exist as far back as the early 2000s there were so-called ghost cities and there

is another photograph so the area in which i lived there were lots of lovely new buildings

however there was there was no one living in them and they were they were referred to

as ghost towns or ghost cities well uh we should have bought a load off of mr duncan

we'd have probably made a handsome profit i don't know by now well unfortunately we've

been allowed to no we can't foreigners are not allowed to buy property in china well

did you know that so you probably didn't but now you do maybe we should have found a proxy

yes well you normally do it to buy them for us yes you normally do it through a chinese

company you have to go to a chinese company say i want to buy the property they will manage

the property and take a load of money off you and that's how it works but you can't

just privately buy property in china if you are a foreigner do you miss china says mosin

do i miss it yes i do of course yes it was a big part of my life and i suppose you might

say that it led to what i'm doing now would you like to see a photograph of me in the

classroom mr steve go on look at that so there i am in front of the blackboard and for those

who don't know what that means on the board that is actually my name that is what my name

looks like in chinese deng ken denken so that is actually my name yes have you still that's

a nice white top you're wearing mr duncan okay uh yes i bet you had all the girls after

you there in china mr duncan wearing that uh uh that tight white top not only the girls

not only the girls we won't go into that and here's another one this is my first ever lesson

here i am teaching my first ever lesson and can i just say i was so nervous i was petrified

i was so scared in fact you can see how nervous i was because i've written everything in giant

capital letters on the board because i felt so nervous i was so scared that that maybe

that they wouldn't be able to read my writing so i made the writing on the board really

big and one of the students put their hand up and they said mr duncan you don't have

to make the writing so big we can read it and then everyone laughed and i did feel a

little bit just a little bit embarrassed what does that say above the blackboard do you

know what that says i'm not quite sure but quite often there are there are mottos or

things to encourage students with their studies or to give them some sort of motivation here's

another one and there i am talking to one of my students and and the young girl looks

as embarrassed as me i think we were both a little bit awkward because this this was

my first ever class that i was giving wow way back in 2003 who took that photograph

he was one of the teachers in fact it was my personal assistant okay i also had my own

driver isn't that nice so that you were safe i was safe even though i did not like living

in the school when i first started working at the school i did not like living in the

school because it was always very noisy so i eventually i did move out of the school

i i got my own little apartment and lived away from the school and that's where i visited

you yes you actually came to see me eventually in 2006 steve actually came all the way to

china to visit me there so so yes it's pretty good and and yes i did enjoy my time in china

it was a great experience and you might say that it changed my life quite a lot here's

another photograph a couple of more and there i am in beijing outside one of the many many

mcdonald's there are many american fast food chains there was kfc mcdonald's you would

often find them all over the place there was actually a mcdonald's in tiananmen square

as well so i did i did see one in tiananmen square talking of which there i am in tiananmen

square in front of the famous forbidden city so behind those walls is a place called the

forbidden city although it's not so forbidden nowadays because because the tourists can

go in there and walk around what was the average age of your students as uh alexandra the average

age well i taught from around the age of 17 to 19. and 20. so they they normally started

around the age of 17. we also had some younger as well but that was the average age around

17. mostly girls as well so i would say 85 of the students in my school were actually

girls and how long are you were you there so says jorday or silver just over four years

i was in china i worked there and lived there as well and also i went on one or two trips

the school would always take me somewhere and here i am with my two beautiful brides

look at that i bet you didn't know that steve i actually got married i went to the mongolian

grasslands and i actually got married to these beautiful young ladies so maybe you have got

children yes maybe i have you see what would they look like do you think i don't know they'd

be very tall okay then uh so they're you know very tall wouldn't they be yes they are probably

basketball players now yes but there i am in the mongolian grasslands and i don't know

why but whenever my school took me on any trips they would always make me wear clothing

traditional clothing and quite often they would make me sit on a large animal for example

on a camel here i am dressed as as a chinese emperor and and also riding on the back of

a camel and that that is the only photograph of me in existence sitting on the back of

a camel that's very funny that hat it it almost looks sort of uh mexican or sort of spanish

yes it's a traditional chinese hat often wore by by emperors no emperors male that's male

that's male clothing how dare you and i suppose we can't talk about china without mentioning

food

so i was in china when sars broke out okay so that's interesting i was actually there

when when sars was detected and then suddenly everybody went into lockdown in china so what's

that picture then who's that that is me with one of my students who later became a teacher

so he actually became a teacher after he left the school and we were very good friends he

was actually going out with the the the president of our school's daughter oh right at the time

so that was interesting yes so he was actually dating the the president of our school's daughter

did that help him in his career do you think not really but the interesting thing you can

see we are wearing masks because this was when sars broke out in china many parts of

china went into lockdown sars kovid one i think it's called isn't it yes so this is

the first coronavirus outbreak way back in 2003 and yes i was in china at the time in

fact i was virtually the only westerner left in the city where i was staying because everyone

left yes that i remember that i was quite frightened because you were there during that

uh that that outbreak but thankfully uh that was quite well contained by the authorities

there wasn't it yes uh sars and it turned out that it was uh quite deadly but didn't

really spread very well that's between people well the worst affected area was hong kong

which is where it originated so it did slowly spread but yes yes a lot of parts of china

went into lockdown all of the foreign teachers and workers that they all evacuated china

they they all got on the first plane out of china and they all disappeared and and i was

virtually the only westerner left in the city where i was staying it's true i'm not joking

i was very worried at the time because how long were you you had to stay in the school

for how long in the school grounds i'm going to be honest we didn't have to stay in the

school even though many people were supposed to stay in one place but yes you are right

steve the schools did close down so all the schools closed many of the restaurants closed

does this sound familiar by the way it sounds very familiar you've gone through one lockdown

already i've lived through this already and what year was that mr duncan 2003 2003 sars

covered one i think it was called wasn't it well it wasn't called one then just just but

it was it was very closely related to the virus that's causing the current pandemic

it's amazing uh it was it was a corona virus um so very interesting and there have been

other outbreaks haven't that there's one there was another one was it mers was it called

covid mers i think not sure there's been another one since then uh but of course because a

lot of countries like china have had experience in dealing with these types of infections

they've done very well it containing it this time listen this is interesting actually steve

because a lot of people aren't mentioning the fact that china has a lot of experience

in the past with dealing with these sorts of outbreaks which is one of the reasons why

they they dealt with it so well because that's what happened in 2003 the same thing happened

exactly everything went into lockdown no one could travel the buses stopped running restaurants

closed so the same thing happened in 2003 as what happened in 2020 because it wasn't

as infectious it didn't spread very easily from person to person it was very easy to

contain it and stop it yes whereas of course that's not what we've had this time i always

think that's a little bit more of the story that people don't talk about though the fact

that china has has experienced this already and many other um countries nearby as well

i think um taiwan's also experienced at singapore so they've all got experience at handling

these types of in infections that have happened in the past you might even say recent past

you might even say because of the way china is actually ruled and governed that it's easier

to get people to do things like stay at home and not break the rules valeria says how long

was the lockdown the lockdown lasted for over two months two months so i arrived in china

i started working for about two weeks and then sars came along and then they said i'm

sorry we're going to have to close the school so the school stayed closed for two two months

and they and so i stayed there i had nothing to do i had no work and my school carried

on paying me my full salary this is this is incredible so two months later i start back

to work the school reopens and then about three weeks later we have our big holiday

during the summer so we have two months off for summer so i during my first year in china

i only worked about i don't know maybe a month two months in total in total so no wonder

you've handled this lockdown very well because you've already been through one when you were

in china it is it is amazing how little about that my first year in china i didn't do much

work i wasn't teaching much however when the school did reopen they made me work very hard

i could tell you now what did you do says uh valentina well of course in those days

we didn't have sort of facetime or or being able to video call somebody on on the internet

you couldn't do that then yes it's easy to forget how basic the internet was in 2003

and i showed the picture earlier of my phone that i that i was taking pictures on when

i first arrived so have a look so there it is my old nokia and that was the first phone

to actually have a camera a high quality camera built in so that gives you an idea so in 2003

that camera that is in my hand the phone in my hand in that photograph was actually the

highest quality photograph that you could take on a mobile phone in 2003. yes so we

could we couldn't communicate could we i think i've called you it was even difficult to phone

you because we did home lines weren't very relevant we had email emails we kept in touch

with each other with email yeah and of course you could send photographs as well so that's

that's fine but it's it's very easy to forget just how how basic the internet was even in

2003

and it was it didn't it didn't spread uh it was easy to contain because it wasn't a virus

that was particularly easy to spread from person to person it wasn't anywhere near as

infectious as the current uh version of it so uh if you get an infect if you get an outbreak

it's very easy to uh to contain it and to trace the people that had it and then contain

it in that way whereas if it's spreading as rapidly as this one does it's very difficult

to contain a virus like that just as it is with a cold or flu um i mean um what's that

that nasty virus ebola oh ebola ebola virus in a lot of african countries is another example

of a of a virus that is very deadly but is relatively difficult to spread from person

to person so it's not easy to spread it yes so when if you get it it's very deadly yes

but it doesn't spread you know like a cold or a fluid i must point out that ebola and

coronavirus aren't related no well i didn't either i didn't say you did of course the

biggest fear is that by by virologists okay and health experts around the world is that

one day we may get a virus that is very very deadly okay and spreads very easily yeah okay

steve get those two things combined and it's good night okay steve that's great that's

that's steve making stuff up i'm not making anything up well it could happen yes it could

happen but it doesn't exist so you are making it up yeah you don't want you don't want uh

you don't want you don't want coronavirus and ebola to to mix up uh together and come

out with a brand new version of themselves i think i think ebola kills why'd you laugh

at the end of that sentence i think if you get a boner it's like a fifth one 50 50 chance

of surviving so it if you get it i think it's it kills one in every two people okay whereas

with coronavirus it's only about one in a hundred thousand or something but yeah happy

then if you're not careful you can accidentally block people yes steve has it done that before

steve does it a lot anyway talking of coronavirus yes you have some news it's not big news a

lot of people did guess it well it's big news a lot of people guessed it i i'm going for

my injection i have been called by the nhs to go and have my vaccine because i've reached

a significant age okay and i'm now in the group so i went online today online what what's

that is that is that the is that the sign language for online i went online online my

appointment to book my appointment interesting rosa says of course there are many different

synonyms for injection and rosa to use the word jab and she says what's a jab jab it

just means well if you jab someone it means you stick something in them rapidly i'm going

to jab you with a knife or jab you with a fork if i was to if i were to get this pen

what and jab you in the arm like that that's a jab and of course an injection is a similar

thing isn't it it's like you're being jabbed with a needle i don't like that phrase because

they use that a lot on the news here in the uk people going for their jabs well i think

that could put people off because it sounds like it doesn't sound like a nice procedure

if you just say you're going for your injection or you're going for your vaccination or your

or your needle stab yes but you don't want to say i'm going you don't want to hear people

say if you're frightened of needles which a lot of people are you don't want that word

jab to be used because that's going to make you feel oh i don't want to go for that i

think the bbc and other news agencies need to be careful about using that word and they

keep showing we get we get the news have you noticed we do get we do get the news and they're

showing people being vaccinated aren't they they're showing people being vaccinated and

you know i i don't i'm not needle phobic if you're phobic if you've got a phobia it means

you you don't like something yes you have an irrational fear of something that's it

too if you're needle-phobic it means you you have a fear of needles which i'm not but i

keep watching people on television having their injections okay and it's making me think

oh i don't know if i want that i will have it but the way they do it that they just prolong

it they just actually see the nurse sticking the needle right into the patient's arms where

do you want them to put it no but they don't need to show that they don't need to show

in great detail a needle going right into somebody's arm in close-up you know every

five minutes on the news i don't think they should do that because that could put some

people off who might benefit from having well you talking about it now might put people

off

you're just as bad steve's just as bad as the news but i think it does so yes you can

use jab vaccination inoculation vaccination yes injection vaccination is probably the

best word i prefer needle i prefer needle stab i think n needle stab uh so mr steve

is going for his needle stab tomorrow they're going to stab him in the arm with a giant

long piece of thin metal it's going to go into is it's going to hit the bone it's going

to they're going to inject it right into his eyeball belarusia says said a lot earlier

and i wrote this down um that they haven't started giving them yet in argentina belarusia

in argentina i don't know i'm not oh i see i oh well belarus here hello belarusia in

to stay in the commonwealth that means that they are very quite royalist i think i think

most people are quite royalists yes i think most people are in you know in favour in the
