I've been lying on my back

trying to recover.

My back has been very painful to the point where I couldn't move.

So over the past couple of days, I've been trying to make

my back better again by fixing it.

I've been doing some exercises, but also I have been

lying still

flat on my lovely electric blanket.

And I have to say, I feel much better.

Not 100%.

I have to say I am not in the pink.

I am still a little bit and well with my back.

It isn't as bad as it was at the weekend.

Thank goodness.

I don't know what's happening today

because I haven't used my voice much.

Suddenly I'm finding it very hard to speak.

now, this is a criticism

that I've heard quite often from people saying that

men are not as health

conscious as women may be.

Women are more aware

of their health and the needs of their health.

But men quite often are not very health conscious.

When we say that someone is health conscious, we mean that they are constantly

all always aware of keeping fit,

but also they are always aware of how well they are.

General DeLay your general health.

So are men health conscious?

And I've heard this a lot in the past that men would rather suffer

and not go to the doctor or do anything about it.

They would rather be unwell or feel uncomfortable

than get medical advice.

Is that true, though?

I'm wondering if that is a real thing or whether it has been made up.

But some people do say that men are not very health conscious.

And of course, women sometimes say that men

often suffer more or they appear to suffer

more when they get things like flu

or maybe the common cold.

So I'm not sure.

You see, I think sometimes I do

neglect my health,

especially if I'm busy and maybe that's one of the things.

Maybe men are too busy to take care of their health.

Maybe that's the reason why, but I'm not really sure.

So what do you think?

very well at the weekend because of my painful back.

But I didn't go to the doctors and I still haven't.

So I've tried to put this right.

Men quite often will avoid

everything

concerning their health.

They won't go there.

They won't go to the doctors.

They don't want to admit that they are unwell

because maybe it is seen as a sign of weakness.

Perhaps.

Maybe some men don't want to appear weak or unwell,

so maybe it is something

that is generally accepted.

But I think sometimes men are like to be brave.

We like to be macho.

We don't like other people to know that we are unwell.

So maybe that's part of it.

or idioms connected to the colour yellow.

There aren't.

I can only think of one which is yellow,

describing a person who is a coward or afraid.

So a person who is easily scared or afraid

might be described as yellow,

just like the daffodils that are out in the garden.

lots of bumblebees buzzing around as well.

So today's subject, we are looking at words and phrases,

lovely idioms connected to colour.

Before that, we will have a look at some lovely colours

that occur in nature at this time of year

because it is spring time.

The spring

colours are in the air and everything is looking quite nice.

To be honest,

English addict is with you

for this Wednesday the 27th of March.

We are coming towards the end of another month.

I can't believe how fast this year is going by already.

It seems as if it is going by very quickly indeed.

Today we are looking at words and phrases,

idioms, ways of using colour.

One of the things I love about my studio, if you look around my studio,

you will notice there are many colours vivid,

clear, bright colours.

We have red, we have blue.

There is even a little bit of green here in there

and they just happen to be the main colours

that we are talking about today.

We are looking at idioms, phrases and expressions

connected to colour, colour, idioms

and there are quite a few.

So when we talk about colour we are describing the appearance of something.

But of course there are many other ways of describing

how something looks when we look at something

light will reflect off the object.

Whatever it is we are looking at, it will reflect back towards us.

We might see colour, we might see the hue.

And I love that word, something that appears in a certain shade

or a certain tone.

We can talk about the hue.

What colour does it have?

Maybe it is a combination of more than one colour.

Sometimes you can mix colours together to produce a new one.

Also we have shade as well.

How bright something is, how dark it appears.

So not only do we have colour, we also have hue shade.

And I suppose we can say that sometimes

a thing will glow as well.

If something is extra bright, you might find it will glow,

especially when the surrounding area is dark.

You might find

that a streetlight at night will glow.

Maybe a person can appear to to glow

if they look well or if they look stylish or fashionable.

So quite often these days, a person who who makes themselves look beautiful

or maybe they try to improve their appearance

and they want to stand out in the crowd,

we might say that that person will glow.

So there are many ways of describing colour

and also shade as well.

Not only colour, but also the differences between

light and dark.

When we talk about colours,

we often refer to the main colours red,

green and blue, quite often with televisions sets

or computer monitors or even mobile phones,

you often find the screen will be based

on those three colours red, green and blue.

They are classed as primary colours,

so they naturally reflect light

as as the human eye can also see the colour as well.

So quite often we have televisions and also computer monitors.

The things you are watching right now

the main primary colours are red, green and blue

and everything else you can see is a combination of those things

and then

you can see on the screen right now you have r, g,

B, which is red, green and blue.

And then we have something called C and Y K,

which is a different thing altogether.

That of course refers to different colours

which can be used in a specific way quite often with printers.

So when you print something on a piece of paper

that is using other colours, other

specific colours as well,

I will show that once again very quickly.

So red, green and blue are the basic colours primary.

And then we have cyan, magenta, yellow and black

and they are often used when we want to print something.

That is the reason why when you buy printer ink,

those are the colours that your printer will use.

I hope that's being useful.

The colour of something.

when we look at something, maybe a flower,

maybe you might look at some colourful

clothing that a person is wearing,

how something appears to the eye,

because that is where it all happens in the eye,

the colour, the light, the darkness, the shade, the tone.

Everything is perceived by the eye.

That is where it all goes on.

Some colours are sent directly to the eyes

whilst others reach the eyes through reflection.

So not direct colour.

And of course the eyes are amazing.

I remember at school being fascinated by the human eye.

I used to love studying biology

and the eye always fascinated me because it is such an amazing part of the body.

It really is so many small things

inside the eye, all working together

so we can see it is the most amazing thing.

The primary colours are seen through cone cells,

so the back of your eye is called the retina

and at the back you have different types of cells.

You have cone cells and rot cells.

And each of those things are sensitive to different types of light.

For example,

the cone cells

can can get colour, they perceive colour,

the cones see colour,

the primary colours are seen through cone cells in each eye,

shade is seen through rods,

cells, those which are sensitive in low light.

So in darkness different cells

are absorbing the light.

So I think it's a very interesting subject

looking at parts of the body who we might do this again, actually in low light,

we see in black and white because the rod cells in

the eye do not process colour.

So that's the reason why if you go out on a dark evening

and you look around, there is no colour.

Everything appears in shade.

You can only see dark and light, you can't actually see colour.

And that is the reason why certain cells in

your eyes can only see in black and white.

There is no colour being processed, only shade.

Some people are not able to

see colours accurately, so there are people who are unfortunate.

Maybe their eyes have some problem,

some people are not able to see colours accurately.

They are referred to as Colour-Blind.

A person who is colour-blind cannot see colours

or perhaps they see certain colours but in the wrong way.

So maybe certain colours will appear different to what they actually are.

Some animals as well have colour blindness.

They cannot see colour dogs, I believe dogs

cannot see colour.

They can only see in black and white.

And there are other animals as well who cannot

see colours accurately.

By the way.

I suppose should mention straight away that the word colour

is spelt differently in American English.

In British English you can see that

the spelling in British English has the letter U.

In American English

it is spelt without the U.

So that is the spelling in British English.

And there is the spelling in American English.

Sometimes these two different ways of using

the English language can have some slight differences.

Sometimes times in the spelling of certain words.

The word colour can be used

as a noun and a verb.

The colour of something

is the noun to colour something.

Maybe you are changing the colour of something,

maybe you are adding colour to something.

So we can say that you colour something as a verb.

So it is possible to use the word colour as both a noun

and also a verb as well

as an adjective.

The word colour describes something utilising or using colour.

A very good example, of course, being the colour, television,

colour, televisions utilise or use colour

that is part of their function.

So it is a way of identifying that particular

thing visually as an adjective.

The word colour describes something utilising

or using colour such as

a colour television.

Something possessing

colour might be described as coloured.

Now this is a very sensitive word

because some people don't use this nowadays

because it can be used in a negative way.

Something possessing colour might be described as coloured,

a coloured t shirt.

So maybe if a t shirt has

a certain colour or many colours

we can say that it is coloured.

So a thing that has one colour

may be a very bright colour or lots of colours.

We can say it is coloured.

If it has many colours we can say

something is multi coloured,

it has many colours.

So maybe if you are wearing a type of clothing

that has lots of different colours,

we can say that it is multi

coloured, it has many colours,

There are

many idioms in English

that use certain colours in express form,

so there are in English many ways of expressing colour,

but using it figuratively.

So maybe you use a certain

colour to describe the way you feel

or your mood.

Yes. What are the most common

forms of colourblindness is between red and green.

You are right. Yes.

Here is our first idiom for today.

Someone is feeling in the pink

If you are in the pink, it means you are feeling well.

You feel fit to be feeling unwell and fit.

You feel healthy.

You feel as if your body is strong

and you feel very well.

We can say that you are in the pink.

I am in the pink today.

You might say that a person looks in the pink.

You look very well.

You look in the pink.

It means that person is looking well.

I think it actually refers to the skin colour.

So maybe if a person looks radiant or healthy,

you might say that someone looks in the pink.

Then we have another phrase, tickled pink.

Tickled pink

to be tickled pink is to feel pleased about something.

You feel very pleased.

You feel happy about something a certain thing occurs

and you feel tickled pink.

I'm tickled pink to have been chosen.

Maybe you have been chosen to take part in a contest or a competition,

or maybe you have been chosen to represent a certain group of people.

You can say that you feel proud, you feel great, you are

tickled pink,

you feel very happy about something.

I am tickled pink to be here with you today.

Here's another one using the colour red.

Now, if you are in the red,

I'm sure from time to time we have all been in the red.

I know I have.

If you are in the red, it means you owe money to the bank.

Maybe you have no money in the bank.

You have borrowed money from the bank.

So you have no credit.

There is no surplus of money in the bank.

So instead of having lots of money in the bank,

maybe have lots of debts in the bank,

you are in the red, you are in debt.

You owe money to someone.

You are.

You have no money in the bank.

You are in the red.

You are losing money.

So sometimes a business at the end of the year,

a business can decide whether they are

making money or losing money.

So if they are in the red, it means they are losing money.

They have no credit.

Another one using the word red

to see red.

If you see red, it means to become angry

or enraged by one thing.

That news made me see red.

It did.

I was so angry.

It made me see red.

So when a person sees red,

it means they become angry, outraged,

or enraged by something.

They see red.

Here's another one using the colour red.

You might have a great day where everything goes

well, you might receive a nice surprise as someone might come to see you.

Maybe you have some good news about a job

you were applying for.

Maybe you find out that something nice

is about to happen to you.

You can say that this is your red letter day.

The red letter day is a special moment when something good happens.

It's been a red letter day for me.

Maybe everything has gone perfectly.

Maybe something nice has happened.

You can say that today is a red letter day.

It means everything is going quite well.

Something nice has occurred.

Here we go.

Another one.

There seem to be a lot of idioms using the colour red

and I don't know why, but I'm sure

there are many reasons for it.

But Red does seem to be a very common colour when we are expressing things.

And I think it's because Red of course

is seen as a very expressive colour for anger,

love,

hate.

Quite often red is associated

with those particular emotions.

So maybe that is the reason why

if something is described as a red herring,

we can say that it is a false assumption

from a misleading clue.

So may be something you think is important

and then you follow it or pursue it,

but then you find out it was meaningless.

Or maybe someone did that to mislead you.

We can say that that thing is a red herring.

It is something that is there to mislead a person

or to make them follow the wrong trail.

The fake letter was just a red herring.

Something that is a red herring is that is placed

or is there to mislead a person

to make them come to the wrong can.

Conclusion.

Here's another one.

Maybe if there is an emergency, something goes wrong,

something goes badly wrong, maybe something happens.

And lots of people have to be warned to leave the area.

Very quickly,

you have a red alert

and and and a type

a type of sudden warning in the form of a sound or alarm.

So quite often when we have a red alert, normally there will be something

telling you that a thing is

happening, something dangerous, something bad,

something terrible is approaching

and you have to get out of the area.

You have to run away as quickly as you can.

We call it a red alert.

Quite often there will be a sound and sometimes there will be a light

flashing as well to tell everyone

to get out, to run as fast as you can.

A very stern warning,

normally given in the form of a sound

or some sort of alarm, a red alert siren.

One woke up the camp.

So maybe early in the morning, maybe an alarm started going off.

A warning siren telling

people to be alert,

quite often used, especially these days,

green with envy.

We have another colour now, another one of our lovely prime colours to be jealous

or to be showing signs of jealousy.

We can say that a person is green

with envy.

When someone is green with envy, we are saying that

that person is showing jealousy.

That person is jealous, they are envious,

they feel envy towards another person

to be green with envy.

He was green with envy.

When he saw my new car.

He was looking over the fence

and I could tell from the look on his face he was jealous.

He was green

with envy.

He was jealous.

So quite often we will express the emotion of jealousy

as green with envy.

A person might be described as green,

a person who is new at something.

Or maybe they have very little experience.

They are inexperienced.

A person who is inexperienced

is someone who has little or

no experience at all.

I am green when it comes to dating.

I am green when it comes to dating.

That means that person has never tried it before.

They've never tried dating.

They've never tried to meet someone

that they would like to get to know better.

Dating

a person has to start at some point,

and when you begin something new, we can say that you are green.

You are green, you are new, you are in experienced.

You have no experience of that particular thing.

You might be feeling blue.

If you are feeling blue, then it means you feel sad.

You feel

unhappy, maybe you feel gloomy

about something to feel sad or unhappy.

A general feeling of unhappiness.

We can say that someone is feeling blue.

Maybe you are feeling blue about something.

A thing that is on your mind, making you feel sad.

Maybe you've received some bad news

and now you feel blue.

I am feeling blue about failing my driving test.

I took my driving test and I failed.

And now

I feel blue.

To feel blue is to feel sad, upset

and unhappy.

You feel blue?

here's another one using the colour blue

a blue joke

When we tell a blue joke

or if we hear a blue joke

that means a person is telling a joke

that is rude.

Maybe it has some bad language

or maybe something rude is contained within that joke.

So when we say that a comedian

is telling blue jokes,

we can say that that person is telling rude jokes,

naughty jokes using swear words.

Perhaps I walked out because of the blue jokes being told.

Maybe you went along to a club and

there was a comedian on stage telling jokes

and maybe some of the jokes were a little bit naughty.

You can describe them as blue jokes.

Here's another one.

This time we are using the colour black.

Black, I suppose, is a colour.

It is a shade from light

to dark, from whites

to black.

We have black sheep, I'm sure, in our families.

Your families, My family is everyone's families.

I am sure we all have at least one

black sheep in the family,

a relative who has brought great shame on their family

can be described as a black sheep.

That person is the black sheep of the family.

There is always one person in the family.

Maybe they did something bad, they did something wrong.

Maybe they went to prison for a crime.

We can say that

that person is the black sheep of the family.

My brother is the black sheep of the family.

He's done something very naughty and now the whole family

feel ashamed because of it.

So I think it is fair to say that

everyone has at least one black sheep in their family.

It's a very expressive term.

Here's another one once again, using the colour black

blacklist.

Have you ever been on the blacklist?

I don't think I have.

Although maybe I am.

Perhaps I am on the blacklist and I just don't realise it

because sometimes you can be on a blacklist but you don't realise it.

Names of people or companies that have been blocked

or banned.

He was on the Hollywood blacklist for many years,

so way back when there was a lot of tension

in the United States about communism.

There was a period of time where people,

if anyone, spoke out in support of communism, they were immediately

blacklisted, especially people in the entertainment business.

Hollywood, for example, so many people who appeared

to have some sort of sympathy for communism

were often singled out, and quite often

they would end up on a blacklist.

It did happen.

Of course.

These days we see that particular period as unfair

and unjust.

Some people say that it was a period of paranoia.

Then we have whitewash.

Maybe there is something that you have done or your company has done

that you want to hide, you want to cover it.

Maybe you will try to distract people with something else,

or you try to cover up the thing that you did

that might get you into trouble.

You whitewash something to cover up a scandal

or bad deed by hiding it.

You cover it.

Maybe you have to give a report about your company.

Maybe you will cover up all of the bad things

and you will exaggerate all of the good thing.

So then people will not look

at the bad things you did to cover up a scandal

or a bad deed by hiding it

or trying to cover it.

They whitewashed the report to avoid punishment,

so you might whitewash something

to hide all of the bad details.

All of the bad things are contained within.

Here's a good one.

A person at work, I'm sure you know someone who is like this

a person who always wants to make their boss happy.

Perhaps they they want a promotion in their job.

Maybe are looking for something from their boss.

So they have to be nice to him.

They have to be kind to the boss.

They have to always

say nice things to get some favour.

A person that seeks favour by falsely

being nice to the boss.

So that is actually an example.

I'm using that.

So maybe in a work situation

someone will always be nice to the boss.

They will always say nice things to them.

They will always try to please them.

We can describe that person as a brown

nose, a person who is a brown nose

is a person who is always

trying to please the boss or the supervisor.

They are always trying to get their favour.

If you want that promotion,

you will have to do some brown nosing.

So a person who does?

Brown nosing is a person who will creep.

They will try to cajole their boss.

They want to be seen as the good person

in the company, so they will see lots of nice things to the boss

to try and get them to do that.

It does happen quite often.

There are there are always people in the office maybe,

If you are in the black,

it means to have money in your bank account

that is yours.

So money that you have that belongs to you, it is your money.

It is not my money.

It is your money.

And you have lots of money in the bank.

You are in credit

and you have money.

So you don't owe the bank money.

You have money.

You are in the black.

Maybe a company will describe profit.

So if a company is making profit,

they are making money instead of losing money,

we can say that they are in the black.

The business will be in the black next year.

That means we will be making money.

It means we don't have to owe money to other people

because we are in the black.

Finally, you might give someone

the green light to give someone

the green light means to allow something to go ahead and be done.

You approve of something,

so maybe you have to look some plans.

Yes. Yes, I look so.

Okay. You give it the green light.

You say that thing can go ahead.

You give it the green light.

Quite often when you are waiting at traffic lights, traffic

lights will go on red to stop you.

Then eventually they will go on green, which means you can go.

So when you give someone the green light, it means you are saying

that they can do that thing.

You are approving something,

You are saying that thing can go ahead.

The government have given the green light to the project.

That means they have allowed that thing to go ahead.

They have approved that thing.

There are many colour idioms in the English language

and those that we have looked at today,

I would say they are the most

popular ones from the whole list.

That is almost dates for me for today.

We do have a subject coming up on Sunday, so we are going to talk on Sunday

about being able to joke or laugh about things.

Have we lost our sense of humour?

Have we lost it?

Is there a point in time where people stopped laughing?

These days everyone seems so sensitive about certain topics.

It would appear that most people are afraid to make jokes

just in case they upset another person.

that there will be lots and lots of hot

cross buns to eat as well.
