Something that you've just reminded me of,

Claudia, to be honest, you've just reminded me that everyone.

Everyone on myself, you sitting there now watching this,

everyone has something to tell.

Everyone has a story that they can share with other people.

And I always say that everyone has a book inside them.

Everyone has a story to tell, but only a few people

have the motivation or the courage

to tell their story,

their own personal life story.

And to be honest with you, I do find

life stories quite interesting.

So I'm not talking about fiction.

I'm talking about real things

that happened to to anyone really.

So quite often in life you can have problems,

you can have challenges, you can have things.

You have to overcome some type

of difficulty that you have to push through.

And I think those types of stories

can be inspirational.

They can inspire people

to do their own things in their own life.

Maybe if you have a certain disability, maybe something you feel is holding

you back in your life and you might find

that you are inspired by that story.

Maybe you read the story of a person who overcame

lots of difficulties and there are many.

We often think of disabilities maybe

the background of our own lives.

Mine, for example.

I don't want to talk about me all the time,

but my mind, my upbringing, my

my early life was quite simple, quite basic.

It wasn't.

I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth.

Let's just say I wasn't.

So I had a very basic upbringing.

My parents were not wealthy and everything was fairly difficult.

Growing up during the 1970s and the 1980s.

It was not a good time.

If you were a family way back then,

trying to raise your children without a family

and earn a living, it was not easy, let's just say so.

I think we all have a story to tell.

Maybe your background, maybe something about yourself,

maybe a certain difficulty, maybe a physical problem.

Maybe mental illness has become

something that more and more people talk about depression,

anxiety, these things, many people are affected by them.

And these days there are many ways of pushing

through those difficulties.

So I think it is fair to say these days

it is possible to find

inspiration from other people,

especially stories, life stories.

So Claudia, who knows?

You might have something in your life, a thing that you could

write about or talk about maybe your occupation,

which for me is very interesting for two reasons.

One, I always find your occupation very,

very intriguing because I don't think it's an easy thing to do.

Also,

I have a slight problem at the moment concerning one of my teeth.

Again, over the past couple of days it has been hurting so much.

I don't think there is anything worse than having toothache.

Your tooth

is something that might cause problem.

One of them, maybe one of your teeth.

Many of your teeth.

All of your teeth.

Well, I have one at the back

at the moment that has been causing a lot of problems.

And over the past couple of days, it has been hurting quite a lot.

Just throbbing

me, you know, the feeling

something is throbbing throb,

the feeling of something hurting

it almost pulsates.

Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop.

It is a type of pain that you feel in a certain part of your body.

Maybe if you've injured a muscle, or as I did

a couple of weeks ago, into my back.

But now I have my tooth problem.

I don't know what is happening.

I think I might be falling to pieces.

It could have something to do with my age.

I don't know. Talking of which,

we are talking about an interesting subject today.

We are going on a journey, but also we are talking about

something called a senior moment.

Now, this is something that is normally treated

in a light hearted or

jovial or frivolous

or light or as a joke.

So you might treat this particular thing

not seriously.

Senior moment.

Maybe a journey can be something real.

you are doing figuratively.

And I know this is something I don't often explain,

but I will figurative something that is

figurative is being used as an expression.

Some things it is literal

is real.

It is actually happening.

You might say that it is physical,

so literal is real, figurative is imagined,

or you are using something as an idiom.

So, Judy, the word journey can be used

both literally as something you are doing

physically or it can be something that is figurative.

So you are showing the way in which something is being done,

even if you are sitting still, you can go on a journey in your mind.

You might dream, you might have a fantasy about something,

that might be something you've always wanted to do or try.

You might start a journey of discovery.

All of that coming up in a few minutes from now because Mr.

Steve is on his way.

I was out walking yesterday with Mr.

Steve, by the way.

My back is much better.

It is slowly getting

better, but I still have to be careful.

I still have to be very careful when I am walking or sitting or bending down.

Can you believe it at the moment?

And I'm very embarrassed to tell you this at the moment. Mr.

Steve has to tie my shoelaces

because I can't bend down to tie them.

So whenever we go for a walk and I put my big boots on, Mr.

Steve has to tie my shoelaces.

It's a little bit like my mother used to

before I went to school.

She would always tie my shoelaces.

So that is something that is happening at the moment.

So Mr. Steve has become my carer?

Well, not completely, but especially if there's

anything I have to do down there by my feet.

So if I have to tie my shoelaces, Mr.

Steve has to do it for me, which is very, very embarrassing.

you will have high speed Internet near your home.

Do you have it now?

Mr. Duncan No, not yet.

So at the moment I am using my my broadband and internet,

but it isn't very fast and that's why

sometimes there is a problem with the connection.

Not always, but sometimes.

However, I did receive a very interesting

email a few days ago from the the company

that is putting all of the new cables in around this area.

And they said that they now have my house on the plans

for the new high speed Internet.

And I have to say I can't wait because between you and me,

I am getting a bit bored with streaming in. 720p

What I would like to do

is broadcast in ten htp full high definition.

Imagine.

Imagine this in full high definition.

It would be lovely, but to answer your question, no, at the moment we don't.

We don't have high speed internet here.

I think the average here is around

about 4040 megabytes a second,

and unfortunately the upload speed

is only

eight

eight megabyte upload.

So download is a little bit faster, but

upload is still very slow.

And of course if you want to do this streaming,

you have to have a very fast upload speed as well.

But I am hoping over the next few months

things will be improved.

I hope so.

Who knows?

One day I might be actually broadcasting in 4K.

Even though I'm not an English teacher.

But it's fun anyway, and we always have some fun.

Mr. Duncan We do have some fun.

Sun sets, I think.

I think I think one of the things one of the best things about learning

anything is sometimes you have to have fun doing it.

And I like to think this is fun.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, especially if I don't feel

too good in the morning.

Maybe there is an ache or a pain in my body.

I've had many of those recently, including my poor little tooth.

Mr. Steve, you look good today.

You look bright, you look cheerful.

I think you've been outside, haven't you?

I've been outside.

I've been trying to relax.

Mr. Duncan, I don't want to get too tense.

My mind has been working overtime, as you well know.

I've got a

tendency for a mind that never shuts down.

Yes, And it's a bit like, as you put it this morning, Mr.

Duncan, My mind's a bit like.

It's a bit like a computer chip.

An old

computer chip that that easily gets overwhelmed with too many thoughts,

Just like putting too many apps up on your computer.

Yeah, well, having too many websites open, eventually it just goes

slower and slower and eventually packs of all together.

This is what I always say then about the brain.

I always say this about the brain.

The brain is a computer.

I know it's not quite the same, but some people,

they have a very old computer chip in their brain

and you have to be careful how how much you you try to get it to do

so. I've been trying to mentally relax, Mr.

Duncan, not worry about planning things too much.

I think it's safe.

So it's safe to say, Steve,

that maybe your chip is maybe

a Pentium one or Pentium two.

I think mine is about Pentium eight or nine.

I need up.

I need an upgrade. Mr. Duncan. I think so.

I need an upgrade to the the operating system of my brain, everything.

And I'm not quite sure what that is.

Maybe it's just doing more

to get those because as you when you do more,

when you think about things and if Pedro reads a lot of books and

you need to stimulate the mind

and to form new connections, see, I think it's the opposite with you.

I think sometimes you will overstimulated.

I think you worry about too many things.

Last night I was worried.

Last night I thought, Mr. Steve, I bet Mr.

Steve doesn't sleep very well because everyone was talking

about what is happening at the moment in the Middle East.

And I thought Steve won't be able to sleep, but I think you did sleep okay.

So full sleep because I went to bed with an attitude that probably the news has,

as usual, turned

sort of serious world events into a spectator sport.

Well, it almost had, which it did last night.

It was just horrible the way the news was reporting what was going on last night.

It was like we were watching some, you know, the Olympic Games or something.

It's like a spectator sport. It was very strange.

There was one news channel and they said, stay with us

because you won't miss a thing.

And I thought, what a strange way of talking about something

that's quite serious.

And if one country is sending missiles

to another country and you are covering that thing live

and you're talking about it almost as if it's a game show

or reality TV, I thought it was very, very poor taste.

It was horrible.

It was like they were saying the missiles are arriving in half an hour.

You know, stay tuned and watch them.

It was just horrible.

Horrible.

Anyway, we went to bed very bad and of course

everything was alright this morning. Well, you know what happened.

Well, I'm not saying it.

I wouldn't say it's all right.

Well no, Yeah it's, it's, it's a long way from over anyway.

I don't want to talk about that.

There is enough of that.

Maybe people are coming here because they want to cleanse their palates

with something nice and fresh, which is what we are when you think about it.

That's your comment, Claudia?

Yes, exactly. Yes. You have to

do something.

But yeah, let's move on.

Today we are looking at journeys, making journeys.

Of course, we can have different types of journeys,

figurative journeys for me

are normally things that you do or something you undertake,

maybe something new that you are learning or doing or something you are pursuing.

So we are talking about that later on.

So even though we often think of having a journey or taking a journey

as going a long distance, a very long way,

we can also use it figuratively.

So we are looking at that a little bit later on.

But right now, Steve, now,

as you might know, as a regular viewer, you might know that we are not

young people and there are things that can happen as you get older.

And there is one particular thing

that people do refer to and we refer to it quite often.

In fact, Steve mentioned this yesterday.

He doesn't know I'm going to do this, but I'm going to do it anyway.

This is something that we often refer to

when we for a moment,

all our mind will go

blue, go blind, or maybe we are trying to do something

or we go somewhere and we can't remember why.

And there is a particular phrase that we use,

and that particular phrase is

to have a senior moment.

Now, can I first of all say this is not attacking

people who are old or older because we are getting on.

We are we are also getting on.

We are past middle age.

So to have a senior moment, senior moments,

okay, can be described as a lapse of thought or concentration.

So this almost goes back to what you were just saying, Steve,

about your brain needing an update or a reboot.

So when we say that you have a senior moment,

it means a moment of time where you

you lose concentration,

or maybe you start to do something and then you can't remember why

or you do something that is rather unusual.

For example, can you give me an example, Mr.

Steve, of what we call a senior moment?

Well, yes, it's you.

You're talking to somebody and this actually happened to me this week.

I had to give a presentation at work and I sort of

was I've been doing it for about 5 minutes.

And then I was talking about something and somebody asked me a question

and then I, I started again.

I couldn't remember what I was talking about.

I lost my train of thought.

But yes, a senior moment.

You just forget maybe somebody name somebody that you know

very well and

yeah, it's a they call it a senior moment.

It's like a it's like a kind of way of saying that, you know, your brain isn't.

But I think a lot of the time is because

there's too much in there going on all the time.

I actually did something quite disturbing the other day.

Mr. Duncan Yeah, when I was getting ready.

Don't know if you describe it as a senior moment.

I'm not quite sure what this is.

Come on, tell us. I will tell you anyway. Tell us.

So I was, you know, got up usual going to do my sort of

get ready in the morning in the bathroom, clean your teeth, have a shave

and things like that, and I clean my teeth.

That's the first thing I do.

And and then

I don't know what happened, but suddenly I was cleaning my teeth again.

for the first time, you.

You were using the toothbrush? Yes.

Because we've got

I've got an electric toothbrush, but I've got I only use that it night

and I tend to use a brush in the morning because I like to do

different things. Yes.

So I clean my teeth and then I was going to have a shave

because that's what I usually do after that.

And then I suddenly found myself cleaning my teeth again

and only realising that I was doing it when I was

putting the 60 seconds in and I suddenly thought,

when I say, you're going a minute, I see my teeth, Steve.

But the second time you use the electric toothbrush.

Yeah, I did, yes.

So that's the big part of the story.

So first of all, you brush your teeth with, with the hand brush

and then

the next moment you take the electric toothbrush and cleaning your teeth.

Again, I started and I suddenly thought, Hang on a minute.

Haven't I just cleaned my teeth?

And sure enough, I had.

So I've done that twice actually, in the last few months.

So, you know, it's time to save up for the nursing home

codes as

Here's a good senior moment example.

I open sometimes I open a cupboard or go into the fridge

and you think to yourself, Why, why, why have I come in?

What have I come in there for?

Because you suddenly forget.

And I think it is because

there's too much going on in your brain.

You're not in the present moment.

I think that's what it is with me.

So I was cleaning my teeth, doing whatever, and I'm thinking

all the time about what I'm going to do today.

Maybe having an argument with somebody about something that happened

a week ago or something like that. Yes.

And all scenarios are going over my head just Yes.

And you're trying to do one thing, but maybe you're doing

two or three other things as well.

Maybe you see your bathroom scenario I think is quite good.

So that is a very good example because you were getting ready for work.

But but maybe you were also thinking about the things you had to do during the day.

So that's what was happening.

You were completely distracted.

So you're your mind was just taking you from cleaning your teeth

with the toothbrush, and then you actually took

the electric toothbrush and started cleaning your teeth again. Yes.

And I think what it is, is I'm not in those moments in time.

I'm not in the present moment.

I'm not focusing on the task I'm doing because obviously, cleaning your teeth,

shaving, it is like an almost an automatic thing.

It's like driving or riding a bike.

You don't need to concentrate on it.

But part of this mindfulness coach

or mindfulness mindfulness technique,

which is designed to sort of relieve stress in the brain,

is is about focusing on those everyday tasks like cleaning your teeth.

Yes, like so

eating.

Let me go back to this, though, to have a senior moment. Now.

I'm going to tell you a couple of mine, because it doesn't just happen to Mr.

Steve and Claudia has told us about her.

So where are the keys? Where did I put them? Yes, exactly.

Yeah. So let me tell you about mine.

Go on. That couple.

One of them is that sometimes I will have a cup of tea or Mr.

Steve will make a cup of tea for me in my lovely

English addict mug, which is now available by the way.

And. And I will forget it.

I will forget to drink it.

So maybe it's still in the kitchen going cold.

So what I will do is I will then put the cup with the tea,

cold tea into the microwave oven

and then I put the microwave oven on for about one minute to heat the tea up.

But then I

forget that I've put the tea in the microwave.

So later on I go into the kitchen

and then I discover in the microwave there is a cold cup of tea.

So can you guess what I do next?

I heat it up again.

And this sometimes happens more than once?

I think so.

I think the most is maybe three times.

So I've actually had a cup of tea waiting for me in the kitchen

and I've heated it up at least three times.

And each time I've done it, I've forgotten it was there.

So I think that's a good example of a senior moment.

I think that with you, Mr.

Duncan, because I think you would get distracted.

I don't think that's actually a senior moment.

I think you just get distracted by something else. But

but yes, the

senior moments, I think, are things like you go upstairs.

Here's another example. Okay.

You obviously you go upstairs and you get to the top of the stairs

and you say, what have I come up for?

There was something you were downstairs.

There was something in your brain

that said you want to go upstairs for something,

and then you

come all the way back down again, and then you suddenly remember what it is.

You have to go all the way back up again.

Or the opposite.

Yeah, but it is. It's.

You just put your keys down.

You just come in the house, you put your keys. I mean, I do this.

You always lose your car keys.

Well, sometimes when say always.

Okay, often.

I wouldn't say often. Okay. Never.

This is just a thing.

This is just a thing. For an example.

Don't worry, Steve, but I think sometimes we're not.

We're not assessing you. I know, I know.

Sometimes there is difference between what is a senior moment

and what is a distraction.

Well, I'm moving on to this in a second.

You say because we

we use the phrase quite often, it doesn't necessarily refer to being old.

So it is often used as a joke.

So it doesn't mean you are old.

It doesn't mean you are going senile.

It doesn't mean that, but it's referring to just doing something

where for a moment, you know, your brain stops working.

For example, sometimes I put cheese

that I've taken out of the fridge, I put it back in the cupboard

and I have on a couple of occasions and I'm

found

the cheese

in one of the cupboards, not for very long.

So the cheese hasn't gotten a rotten.

But I have got I have suddenly remembered that I put the cheese in the wrong place.

So it does happen and I think it can and I think

the best example was the one you just had where you you go into a room

and you walk in the room and you go, Well,

what the hell was I doing?

I came in here for something and then I can't remember what it is.

What was it?

What, what was I looking for?

And as as Claudia says, it's often

because our mind is on something else at the same time.

Yeah, we. We're thinking because I can have.

I can have two or three things going on in my head.

I can have a melody of a song going on in my head,

and then I can be thinking about two other things at the same time.

And that's like, you know, I haven't got a quad core processor in my brain.

If anything, it's probably only three chords.

So I can

be I can be having a conversation about something in my head with somebody.

A tune will be going over there and then you start adding

and then you start adding and then something else is going on

and then you're trying to do your everyday tasks.

Yeah, but this is not that's not a senior moment.

That's.

No, but that, that's just your cringe.

But I think that's what causes the senior moments I think is because

your mind is distracted with other things.

Yeah.

I just think paying attention as well, paying attention to things.

And we've been in situations where where

we might be having a conversation with other people and,

I sometimes

just completely disappear from the conversation.

I'm not listening to what the other person is saying,

and I know it's sometimes happens to you as well, isn't it?

Steve So maybe a person is talking you and you just for a moment,

you know, your mind just just drifts away

for no reason.

What was that? Mr.

Duncan That's it.

You see, that's a very good example.

Well, I was pretending that, in fact, it actually happens to us here

on the live stream.

Sometimes I'm talking and Steve will get

very distracted by the the live chat.

And then I say something and he says, sorry, Mr.

Duncan, what did you say?

And I'm right here talking to Mr.

Steve Beatrice.

Beatrice says, when we don't remember

that thing we went into the room for, we must walk back

and say, and suddenly the answer will come.

Yes, yes, maybe.

Sometimes we remember later.

But the other one is

when you are about to say something

and then suddenly you can't remember what it is you were going to say.

So that happens sometimes.

wait, there I was.

I was going to say something then and I can't remember what it is.

And that's that's a very typical one.

But again, it's because it's because your mind is maybe

doing more than one thing.

Maybe you're listening to another person talking to you

and you want to say that thing,

but then you get distracted by what the other person is saying.

So so that thing just just vanishes from your mind.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing.

I think it's normal.

I think we all have that.

Although sometimes I walk into a room and I look around and I think,

no, that's it.

My mind is now starting to to go.

That's it.

But I think it happens to everyone.

It's nothing to do with age.

I think we all have these these what we call senior moments and,

and you might also say that

it is often used in a facetious way.

So when we talk about something being done in a facetious way,

it is normally done in a very light hearted

or as a joke.

I had a senior moment that

so it isn't really taken seriously.

It is just a fun way of saying you forgot something

or my memory suddenly stopped working for a moment.

So I don't think it's necessarily an insult to anyone

because but it sounds like it could be,

but quite often we use it, don't we, Steve, in a jovial way or as a joke? Yes.

I mean, the phrase senior moment is a kind way of saying to somebody

or they say about themselves that they'd just just had a lapse of concentration.

Yeah, it's probably a which is what it amounts to.

But it's very easy to get into these habits of not being in the present moment.

It's very easy to get into these because it's a habit, isn't it?

Yes, it's a habit.

If you patterns of thought, just like anything, habits

and you can develop the wrong habits, the wrong patterns of thought.

And then if you let it go and let it go, you end up going to the doctor

and he gives you some pills, which obviously

are very helpful to people in certain situations.

But yes, so I'm going to but I always find that meditation, Mr.

Duncan always works for me, but in meditation.

But what I do is I do that for a while,

maybe a couple of weeks.

Everything's fine, and then I stop doing it

and then all the old habits come back. Yeah.

So all my life I've thought, meditation works.

I do it for a while.

I stop doing it, but I've really got to be very disciplined

and just do it even when I feel good and well and everything's

good with the mind, I've got to do it anyway.

Well, I think meditation is not just the thing you do it.

It is.

It becomes a way of life.

And I used to know someone who has a company.

He actually has a company very still, still doing it, quite successful.

And he goes around the world

holding these special retreats in different parts of the world.

Quite often in places like Nepal, for example.

I know he's been there

and he takes a group of people with him and they go and they they just

mindfulness.

It is something that has has been I suppose it's quite trendy

or fashionable now to talk about it.

But I remember him telling me that that meditation is

is not just something you do.

It's not like putting a plaster on on a cut.

It has to become it has to become your whole existence.

It has to almost become your way of life.

It it almost exists through you

a bit like the force in Star Wars.

So it's something that's there.

It is almost like an energy, but I think you create that energy yourself.

So it isn't coming from anywhere.

It's actually coming from you.

You are you are creating that, that way

of behaving or thinking.

And over time, of course, the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

And I think that's what that's what meditation really is.

And I think it is very hard to keep doing it

because life, as you know, Steve, life

can be crazy.

Yes. But I think to develop healthy habits is a very useful thing.

And

Beatrice says hello.

Beatrice says that she does meditation every day.

Pedro says that he used to meditate every day as well, but it is difficult to.

I mean, he's only ten.

You you only need to do it for ten or 15 minutes.

And yet, you know, how much time do I spend scrolling

through the Internet on stories about car cars or some of the rubbish

when I could be spending it developing healthy habits

in my mind and nature.

I'm says from an evolutionary point of view it makes sense.

We developed in such a way to focus on one thing

because that's the trouble with modern life.

It's so relatively, you know, if you think of animals, animals

are always in the present moment out at night

because they're constantly worried about one thing and that's survival. Yes.

Well, most animals, if you're unless you're at the top

of the evolutionary tree and of course, we are the top of the evolutionary tree.

So we don't necessarily have to worry about our survival every day.

But most of us don't anyway, thankfully.

So our minds are then free to go off in other directions.

But the problem is we end up not spending a lot of it in the present moment.

I think so.

And I can go out for walks camp.

We can go out for walks. Mr.

Duncan and I can go into the lovely countryside

and you can literally I mean, I've done this.

I'm on walk and I've not noticed anything.

I'm just in here somewhere

thinking about something or some scenario

going on, and I'm not even enjoying

the present moment, which is very important.

Anyway, we, you know, I think we all have go through periods like this.

I think so.

And the reassuring thing is that

this is something that happens to everyone.

So it doesn't matter if it happens now or the game, it doesn't happen.

It doesn't matter if sometimes you you brush your teeth twice

and then you realise that you've done it.

It doesn't matter if you go into a room and forget why you went in there,

because at some point everyone will do that thing.

It is something that happens.

And as you say, Steve, it is because life can sometimes

get in the way is a thing that can happen.

Claudia Claudia says Good is coming out with a lot of

very insightful comments around this subject.

Our minds do not like emptiness.

That's true.

The mind doesn't.

The mind doesn't like to be empty.

It's active. It's busy.

And when there's nothing for it to be busy with, it will fill it with something.

Yes. And I often find like when I'm doing music, for example,

I find that's the thing that really when I'm really in the present moment

is when I'm doing something I enjoy, like music, gardening.

I can be gardening and mind is going over,

but if I'm, if I'm doing music, singing or doing, I can only concentrate on that.

Nothing else comes in. So that's a great

mental health thing for me,

like playing an instrument anyway, I think.

I think it depends, Steve as well, what you are doing at the time and

and how how those two things come together.

Because I used to find that when I went for a walk, I would often

think of new ideas.

It could give me inspiration for something to talk about

or something to make a make a lesson about.

So it isn't even that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

You can put that energy in your brain to good use.

So even even that, and I think exercise is a very good way of doing that.

Anyway, we've got to take a break.

We're looking at journeys.

So you might say that this is connected

to the subject we were just talking about,

and I think it would be a nice moment for us all

to close our eyes or maybe

watch the beautiful images that are about to come onto your screen.

So let's all take a deep breath together and

enjoy some of the lovely spring sights

that are all around us at the moment.

are looking at a very interesting subject, taking a journey.

So when we think about going on a journey, taking a journey,

we often think about going physically to a place.

So I think that would be a good thing to look at today.

A good subject to to take a look at on today's

English Addict livestream.

So here we go.

Journey a very simple word, quite often used as a noun

to describe the long distance that you are travelling.

Maybe if you're travelling to a long, a long way away,

maybe a distant country, a distant place,

you might describe a journey

as a voyage voyage.

So that would be a physical thing.

A physical thing. You take a voyage.

We often think of voyage as travelling a long way, don't we, Steve?

Yes, Voyage You.

When you use the word, you can say.

I'm going on a journey, a journey indicate something

of an increased length.

You know, if you go on a trip

that could be this.

Yeah, a journey.

It's more than sort of going to town to get the shopping.

Yes, a journey is going.

You know, a reasonable distance, a voyage is is going even further.

The indication is that it's going to be lots of excitement, lots of adventure.

There used to be a television programme called Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

A voyage gives the impression

that you've got maybe lots of hurdles to overcome. Yes.

Maybe you're going to go in a car, Maybe you're going to go in a plane

and on a boat.

Lots of different exciting ways of getting to somewhere,

and it's going to be maybe quite a long thing as well. Yes.

So we have voyage, we have trip again,

the word that is often used when we travel to a certain place.

Trip doesn't necessarily have to be long.

It can just be a journey.

You might take a trip into town.

You might go on a trip, yes.

To another part of your country.

So the trip can be short or long.

But again, the trip is normally physical.

You take a physical journey?

Yes, a trip normally you would You normally use trip

to indicate something relatively short.

Let's go on.

Let's go on a trip to London, for example.

If we wanted to go to London, we wouldn't say we're going on a journey

to London or a journey or a voyage to London.

We would say we are taking trip.

Yes, indicate may be a few days.

It's not that far away.

It's straightforward to get to a trip.

So we also have exploration.

Again, you might have a journey where you discover things.

Maybe you find something you haven't before

or you see something you've never come across before.

So the exploration can also be the journey

you might fly into space and explore

the universe, or maybe travel to a distant planet.

Exploring ocean.

You might go somewhere and you might go on a trip

to France or a holiday or a journey to France.

And then you might explore

certain areas and certain regions or something like that.

So you can use different words there as well.

So exploration exploration is a trip.

It's a voyage you while going a long way, might take a trip,

maybe a short journey exploration.

You are going somewhere and you might see some of the things on the way.

Adventure.

I think life

has to have some sort of adventure.

We all have to have a little bit of excitement or adventure.

So you might say that a journey is also an adventure as well

because you are going on a long trip.

Life is is an adventure.

Maybe you travel a place you've never been to before.

We are hoping to go somewhere later this year that we've never been to before.

So we could have a little trip, couldn't we?

Miss the sea we could go on a on a journey

and have an adventure at the same time?

Yes, an adventure.

You're going to explore a new things.

It's going to be the implication is it's going to be exciting.

Got a couple of words from from other people here.

Can I mention those, Mr. Jones? Yes.

Idris says use of the word excursion

and excursion, which is a good word.

You often use that?

Yes. An excursion.

That just means you're a bit like exploration, isn't it?

Yes. An excursion is normally a trip.

You are.

You are venturing somewhere, going on an excursion.

That's quite an excursion, you might say.

So that would indicate an excursion means something

with a lot of content to it,

maybe a lot of things going on.

Also, we have pursuit.

Pursuit is where you are following something.

So maybe you are following a certain route

or a certain journey that someone else has taken in the past.

We can also use the word pursuit

as a thing we we want to do.

So it doesn't have to be something physical.

So you can see now we are not just talking about physical things,

but also figurative things as well.

Your pursuit, you might try to follow a certain goal

or a certain dream, something that you've always wanted to do.

The pursuit of happiness. Yes.

For example, that probably is the most basic definition of everyone's life.

And as you say, that is a figurative use of the word journey, it doesn't mean

you're necessarily physically going somewhere.

You are on a journey in terms of

you might be on a journey to discover how to relax your mind, a journey of

of learning a new skill. Yes.

And of course, because it's got a beginning and end,

a beginning and an end of lots of things in between.

You call that figuratively a journey, Idris says.

A school excursion.

Yes. That's a good use of the word excursion.

I think excursion probably

gives the impression there's lots of people going along.

Yeah.

So if you're going on on a journey, that's an excursion.

Probably lots of people are coming along.

Lots of children or. Or a work excursion.

Yes, a group of people, a of people are going on a journey together.

The old term that we used to use is sharable and nobody ever

says that anymore.

And I think it's a brilliant word.

You have a Shara bank, which is normally a vehicle

that lots of people can get on and they all travel somewhere.

So I love that word.

I want to make the word. Shara Boing

popular again because

I used to hear it as a kid, but no one, no one ever uses that word anymore.

And I think that's a shame.

You can have a journey of discovery.

Steve This is a figurative use of the word again. Yes.

So you are going on a journey.

You could do this physically.

You could take a journey and find things.

But also in this sense we are talking figurative

so you can have a journey of discovery.

Maybe you find out new things that you did not know before.

Maybe you go on the internet.

You might describe surfing the Internet

as a journey of discovery because there are many things

you can find out, things you didn't know before that you do now.

The journey of Discovery

another type of journey.

Idris is very he putting up a lot of suggestions.

A field trip.

A field trip?

Yes. Often in maybe college or maybe at school.

Your your teacher would take the class

on a field trip,

which means you're sort of going out

the open air, not necessarily a field with crops in it.

It just means you're going maybe on a scientific field trip

or a nature field trip going into the country.

If you are out and about, we normally say you are in the field.

So it's an area and the area that you are exploring, Sufi says.

The camp.

My cat crouched in the grass

in pursuit of a bird.

So maybe if you were hunting something, looking for something,

searching for something, maybe you are following

a particular thing you might be in pursuit.

Maybe the police are chasing a criminal who is trying to get away.

They pursue that person.

So we often use journey figurative, figuratively.

It is important to state that there are two ways of using journey.

In reality and also as an imagined things.

Yes, it is figurative, so

physically it could be a

car journey, a train journey, a plane journey,

but figuratively it

can obviously be described in that way as well.

Here's another one.

Yeah, a new venture.

yes. So we had the word adventure,

but of course, you can just have the word adventure.

A new adventure means starting a journey.

So basically what we are saying there is a new thing something you are starting.

Your adventure is something that you are hoping to get

or some some place you are trying to get to your venture.

And again, we are using this figuratively,

so I'm sure you can think of many ways of using that.

Steve When we talk about venture, yes, you could be starting a new business,

for example, and you've been doing one thing

and then maybe you've been working in an office for years

and you decide to start your own business and you would describe

that as a new venture, something new you're doing.

And it would be a journey, obviously, because you would be

there would be a lot of things involved, not a physical journey,

a figurative journey of trying to become successful

in your new business example, a new venture.

So maybe some of that you are trying to achieve

or maybe a goal you are trying to reach is is your venture.

So whenever you start something new, you are starting a journey,

not necessarily physical, something that is actually happening

in your life, things you have to do, things you have to learn.

And of course problems that you have to face along the way.

I mean, it could be that you just

work for the same company but

do a completely different thing within that company.

So you might have been doing the same thing.

Like, for example,

I might have been doing sales for many, many years, which I have.

I might decide to go into marketing and

that would be a new venture for me because it's something I've never done before.

So it doesn't have to be.

It could be within the same company.

Yeah, but you could

start your own business first because you've got to move on.

Steve The first, the, the first step is often the hardest.

So a journey that begins at one point

always starts with the first step.

And quite often beginning something is the hardest thing of all we have.

can I just mention the web all the way?

I just saw something very interesting come up and now it's finished.

yes. Term owned says.

Have you heard of the famous Chinese story Journey to the West?

Yes, I know it very well.

Otherwise known as the Monkey King,

a group of people travel from one part to another.

They are escorting the young Buddhist monk, Tropicana,

to take her or him, should I say, to another place?

The confusing thing is quite often they remake this story

for television, and quite often the person who plays the monk is a girl.

But there are many other characters there.

The Monkey King, a very mischievous character

who was born from a rock, or some people say an egg.

So yes, I do know that story.

There are many versions of it made for film, television

and over the years, especially in China

there have been many versions of that particular story.

And the first step of any journey is always the hardest, isn't it?

Steve Definitely, yes.

It's like, yes, if you want it.

It's like anything, it's it's inertia, isn't it?

Overcoming inertia.

If you want to do anything, it's often the first step is the hardest.

Like trying to plan a holiday, trying to figure out where you want to go

is often the hardest part of that.

If you want to decorate a room, the hardest part is is getting started.

Yeah, it's overcoming that inertia.

Can I just mentioned Well venture

Rosa it's not the same as

adventure.

No, they're not the same, are they?

Well, I suppose with adventure you are talking about the things that happen.

But if you venture that is the journey taking place,

so your venture is just to move forward.

But the adventure is quite often what happens during that particular movement.

The implication being it would be exciting. Yes.

And a joint venture, etc., You know.

Yes, that's a good phrase, a joint venture.

That's where often that happens in companies

where maybe two companies

come together and start a new business.

So that's a venture, that's something new.

They're starting something something new.

They're exploring in the business world,

but they decide to come together to work on this project. Yes.

And you often call that a joint venture.

Everything

is hard and difficult at the start.

And I think, again, this might sound obvious,

but I still think it is a good thing to say to yourself

you are starting something new.

And I find myself in this situation.

There are many things over the years I've had to learn for myself

because I wasn't trained to do it.

I suppose a good example would be working with computers.

I had to teach myself how to edit videos.

I had to teach myself how to even how to build a computer.

I had.

I had to learn all of that myself.

So all of these journeys started at a certain point

and there is always difficulty.

There is always a problem that you will face.

Everything is hard and difficult at the start,

and I always think sometimes the the the hardest part

of learning anything or doing anything is is absorb the knowledge.

And that's one thing that does happen. Definitely.

As you get older, Steve, it becomes much harder to learn new things.

Well, yes,

I think you're right, because your brain isn't as elastic

as it used to be, particularly learning languages and learning musical instruments

apparently is quite difficult as you get older.

Not impossible, but not difficult.

It's a risky or daring journey or undertaking.

So it's a journey, but it's possibly risky.

Yeah. Or.

Or daring something.

Something big in finance.

Steve We often talk about venture capital. Yes.

So is that would that be fair?

Because I don't know about this subject,

but would it be fair to say that that is the money you're putting forward

to, to in something and it might may or may not work?

Yes. Venture capital is quite a popular I don't know much about it.

It's quite a a a phrase it's put around a lot these days

that people with lots of money,

if you're sort of a multi-millionaire

and you want your money to grow in some way

and you don't want to put it on the stock market,

then you might put it into into venture capital.

So, you know, donate some proportion, not donate.

You will put some of your money

into venture capital, which I think you can have the big funds.

And then these funds are lent out to new businesses. Yes.

To try and help them grow.

But obviously it is risky

because if those companies don't perform as you would expect them to.

So you you're a rich person.

You give your money to somebody

who then lends that out to businesses

and you trust that person to lend it out to the business

and you hope that those businesses grow and grow, the money will grow.

So it reminds me a bit of that, that TV show Dragons Den,

where all of those people are hoping to have a little bit

of money given to them or invested into their company.

So you might say that they are they are giving capital to certain people.

So I think, again, it's a very good use of the word adventure.

Everything is and difficult at the start.

There is nothing you can do about it.

Unfortunately, like any journey,

there will be difficulties.

I think it's fair to say that anything you do,

I'm sure you can think of

something you've had to do, you've had to learn. Mr.

Steve and I always remember one of the one of the most impressive

things you've ever done is when you appeared

in the musical show Return to the Theatre

Forbidden Planet, and you had to learn

a lot of very complex Shakespearean dialogue.

And I have to say to this day, I still I'm still very impressed

and quite

or inspired by the fact that you were able to do that.

So the show is based on The Tempest, which of course is Shakespeare,

but they use a lot of the a lot of the dialogue, don't they, from the original.

And you had to learn a lot of it.

Mr. Steve So I would say that that would be a difficult thing, I guess.

I mean, you need to push yourself, don't you?

I think, yes, I need to start doing that again.

I don't really push myself very much anymore.

I need to start something that takes me.

It's good to do something that the phrase that's used

a lot is take you out of your comfort zone. Yes.

So that's what a new venture does, doesn't it?

It takes if you've got a new venture, something risky, something daring

without

nothing is achieved in life without taking a certain amount of risk.

And I think my my example there, when you did that show,

you really did take on quite, quite a big thing.

And I remember at first you were worried

about having to learn all of this complicated dialogue.

But I've never done I mean, no, I've never done Shakespeare before.

There was a huge amount, but yeah, yes.

Anyway, we're not analysing that.

We're just saying that that was a good example

of something you started to do and I was always impressed

that you pushed through, so you pushed through to the end.

You actually did that and the performance gave was incredible

because you had all of that amazing, complicated dialogue.

And it is one of the hardest things to perform anything with

dialogue or words

is is very, very sadly, there's no recording of that.

Christina Bourne says, Yes, I moved to England and started teaching

Spanish for seven years, then started as a science technician.

So yeah, there we go.

There's a journey of discovery

and that you took there and a science technician.

I used to do that.

Christina I used to work in a in a, in a hospital lab.

Yes. Used to analyse people's blood chemistry.

I'm sure we've had this discussion before, but is that true? Steve?

Steve Yes, that's true.

Used to analyse people's blood and poop and urine and mainly blood.

So quite often when you start something new, there will be problems,

there will be struggles, struggle to struggle

is to fight against something.

Or maybe if you are in a situation that you are trying to escape,

you struggle to escape that thing.

So struggle Hurdle.

I think this is a great word so when you're running,

you might jump over something, you jump over the hurdle,

but of course, figuratively, we can have the same thing, can't win something.

You have to overcome it. Yes.

Is a problem that that is in front of you and you have to get over it.

So if you go on a physical journey, there could be problems.

That could be problems with, you know, late trains or planes cancelled planes,

struggles, hurdles, things to overcome.

But figuratively, if you're going on a journey, discovery

in a figurative way, like learning a language

of somebody pointed out here, you're all if you're watching this,

you're all going on a journey

of learning English and

putting yourself out of your comfort zone by doing something different,

getting you correct connections in your brain going.

So you're you're all on this journey of trying to learn English.

That's a good analogy, Mr. Duncan.

And there will be struggles along the way, pronunciation of words and

whatever it is

that enabling you

to to have difficulty here, adversity struggles.

You know, as I say, that's the word I want to look at because because I think

I think life, whatever you are doing, the moment you decide to do something

already, there are problems waiting for you.

Hurdle is.

Yes. Well, what Can I just go on?

Yeah.

So adversity is the thing that is there

quite often waiting for you. So.

So if you start off doing something you already know, you have to be prepared

that there will be things that will be difficult problems,

Hurdles is a is a word that's commonly used in the UK too,

to indicate that you're trying to overcome something that could be,

I mean, a hurdle is something, isn't it, that athletes jump over.

Yes. In in the hurdle is race.

So it just basically means a thing that has to be got over.

That's it's something you have to get over.

And there could be many hurdles in learning English, for example,

You've got to learn the pronunciation of all the different letters

and then the diction and then and then the meaning of the way.

There's lots of hurdles involved in that.

There could be lots of hurdles involved in becoming successful

in your job, anything and anything.

So that is a good Beatrice says that's a new word for her adversity

is the thing that quite often happens in any pursuit,

anything you are trying to achieve or do

whatever it is there will be some sort of problem.

And I suppose I said that.

I suppose I said that there might be problems that you know

about, but adversity can also be things that you were not prepared for as well.

So the adversity might be just a sudden problem

that that pushes against you and then you to fight that problem.

You have to push through it.

And of course, once once you get through it, then the journey can continue.

You can carry on with the journey.

So adversity is something that does happen.

There will be many emotions as you make your journey.

So it's not always a good thing.

You see anything you do, you have to take the good stuff

and the bad stuff, the rough with the smooth.

So it is something that happens.

There are many emotions.

So it isn't just about doing things, is it?

Steve It's also about controlling your own emotions as you as you do it.

Yes, that's good.

That's true.

Many younger, of course, you don't know what to expect.

So you it. Yeah.

So yeah, you'll have different emotions along the way.

And I mean, I get this all the time with singing.

Singing is it always is a hurdle for me.

I always find it difficult and there are many

emotional.

You get very down when things don't get right, don't go right.

Like if you're learning a new language or an instrument or whatever it is,

there'll be moments when you don't seem to be making any progress at all.

And that can make you down and you might be tempted to give up at that point.

But sometimes there's that good.

There's an adage, isn't that that sort of

bit of advice that says that sometimes when things are really bad,

you could just be you could be, you know, very close to being successful. Yes.

You don't sometimes realise how close you are. Yes.

That almost leads to that feeling of wanting to quit, wanting to give up.

And you could be very close to your goal and you never, ever know.

And I'm going to tell you a story.

I've never told anyone this story.

This is another one from my from my inner life that I've never told anyone.

But just before I became a YouTube

partner many, many years ago

and before everything really started to take off,

I was about to quit.

I was about to delete my YouTube channel.

And this is going way back to it.

Must have been around early 2008

when I became a YouTube partner.

I was actually one of the first YouTube partners on YouTube teaching English,

and I remember a couple of days before then

I was in such a low state, I felt very sad,

gloomy, depressed maybe.

And I was going to to to stop doing it.

I was going to delete it, delete my YouTube channel completely.

So all of all of that that I had started was just going to go.

And then a couple of days later and this is this really did happen?

I had a message from YouTube

asking if I'd be interested

in joining their new partner partner scheme or partnership scheme.

So it just

shows it's gone downhill ever since.

I'm joking.

Mr. Good So.

I could I could have quit there at that point.

I could have deleted my channel and everything, and

I didn't know I was so close to something else happening.

A new opportunity was there right in front of me and I.

I didn't know it was about to happen.

So it shows that you can quit

before just

everything gets better

and that I learnt a lot from that lesson.

And I have to say I've never told anyone because it used

to be used to haunt my dreams and my nightmares

because I used to think, my goodness, imagine so.

Imagine if I had deleted that YouTube channel

and then YouTube were interested in having me as a partner.

And that was way back in 2008.

I were anyway, so.

So nothing would have happened.

None of this would be happening now.

It's incredible.

It sometimes it it blows mind that I almost gave everything up

and we can do it.

So there will be many emotional

feelings.

There will be setbacks,

things that stop you, things that get in the way.

So very similar to hurdles.

Some things it might be like a wall.

And that's the worst thing, isn't it? Steve?

You might be trying to do something and you, you come up to a wall.

There is no way through.

It almost seems as if that said, it

feels as if everything is over.

I've had that feeling a few times here YouTube over the past

couple of years, so there will be things that push you back.

A thing that pushes you back can be

a setback.

In Italy, of course I used to hike into the mountains.

Teaches you a lot about overcoming obstacles,

rocks, cliffs Plains I've learnt a lot from that.

And they often say that's almost like sport, isn't it?

Because sport is often seen when you go for a job,

interviews for certain job interviews.

Certainly in the past I don't know about so much now,

but employers, particularly if you were going to do sales

or you were going to do something that involves you

maybe going out a lot and work and maybe having to work on your own initiative,

They used to like people who had done sports,

particularly team sports like football, rugby, things like that.

They because when you do sports,

you have to overcome a lot of obstacles, a lot of hurdles

because there is a journey involved in becoming good

at your sports and learning how to do that.

So employers like to see people that have done sports

because they see that they're the type of person who is willing to

do something and

overcome the difficulties needed to become good at it.

Yes, And often you do find people in

who are very successful in certain jobs

of often being good at sports.

You have got to sports at a high level because if you get to sports

at a high level, they might have done county sports or maybe national.

It shows that you're a sort of person who's willing to

keep trying and overcoming obstacles. Yes.

Well, they go to a different

to it, to a different level, I suppose, or a different subject.

You might say that that having qualifications from college

or university is a very similar thing, isn't it?

It's, it's, it's you proving to other people

that you are willing to, to,

to put effort into the thing you are doing

so it doesn't have to be connected to the job that you are looking for,

but it shows that you are willing to to learn, you are willing to try.

You are a person who will try to achieve something.

So I always think that's a very good

part of a person's character.

I think so

quite often you might feel like quitting.

As I mentioned a few moments ago, way back in 2008, I nearly quit.

I nearly deleted everything.

I nearly gave up.

If you quit, it means that's it.

I can't do this anymore.

I've decided to stop.

I'm not doing this anymore.

I quit.

I wonder if somebody will edit that and use it.

listen, everyone. Mr. Duncan has quit.

No, I haven't.

But there's another phrase that states sometimes.

You have to know when to quit.

the indication, You know, sometimes you have to.

Or maybe someone needs to tell you.

Sometimes you can be doing something and it's just and it's never going to work.

I mean, it doesn't necessarily mean you

you do something and you must never stop doing it.

Sometimes you have to know when to quit.

That could be, for example, in a relationship that's not working,

not necessarily in something that you love doing

or want to do, like learning English or that because that's something that

you know that you probably can achieve if you keep on trying at it.

Yeah, all the time.

Learning a new language, learning a new skill.

You probably will always get better at it.

So there may not be any need to quit

if you're just if you still got that interest in doing it.

Yes, but certain things a relationship might not be working.

Yes. Example, there is a I don't know what your and but you

and I need to shorten this slightly because we are now 9 minutes away.

Yeah.

So yeah, I'm just I'm just trying to point out the difference

Some things it might not be worth carrying on your life.

I think relationship is a very good yes.

Example of that

because there is a point where you just think we've tried everything.

We've tried hugging, we've tried kissing, we've tried

all the other things as well, going for walks,

and we really don't get along like a job might be another thing.

You're not, okay, The job isn't working out.

You've tried everything. You don't like the boss. It's.

Yeah, it's probably time to quit and get another job.

But things like, as I said, learning English or learning other skills,

as long as you're enjoying doing it, you've no need to quit

because you're always going to you're always going to get better at it.

Yeah, well,

that's actually a very interesting thing because I was talking about emotions.

Of course we can have negative emotions,

but it is also very useful to have positive emotions.

So maybe you are really enjoying the thing you do.

That's why I do this.

I've had many problems here doing this

normally from YouTube, making life very difficult for me, but I've carried on

because to be honest here in here I enjoy it.

I enjoy the feeling of doing it.

I enjoy helping other people.

So that always becomes the thing that I remember.

However, however bad things seem to be,

I always remember I enjoy doing this.

I'm helping other people and that is the most important thing of all.

So whatever happens, I still enjoy doing it and

and having a positive way of thinking is very important.

Almost

what we were talking

about earlier, when you think about it.

So everything is difficult before it becomes easy.

And I know this sounds like a cliché.

It sounds like something that lots of people say, but it's true.

inner strength, courage and determination.

So these are the positive things.

Now, we've looked at the horrible stuff

and here are the nice things, your inner strength.

We talk about a person's courage and you might not realise that

that courage is part of doing something, going on a journey,

doing something new and.

I think courage is something you do need.

You have to take that first step, maybe something you are doing

where other people will see the thing you doing, maybe performing,

maybe you are going to sing or act in front of other people.

So I think there is a certain amount of courage

and you must want it as well.

You must want to do it.

You have determination.

You are sure that you will be successful.

All pursuits are journeys.

You are following something, pursuing something.

Quite often we will use it physically or maybe figuratively.

You are on a journey of learning English.

So even learning English, as Mr.

Steve said earlier, is a type of journey.

We are all on our own separate journeys through life,

and I think learning English is just a good example of that.

So other words, we can use Steve Journey.

You can have Trip Voyage.

QUEST I like that one.

QUEST Maybe something you are trying to find in your life.

You are on a quest

Yes, a quest

sort of is indicating that you've got

something that you really believe in

and you're pursuing something that you really believe in.

It might be a quest for religious enlightenment

or something, or knowledge on a quest for knowledge.

So you go on a journey

of trying to discover something

that involves education,

maybe you could you could say, yes, a quest.

It's sort of like a higher pursuit of something.

You have a goal that's already there, so maybe you can see the goal.

Maybe there is a thing that you are trying to to reach or find you.

We often think of old mythical stories.

Quite often there is a quest for something, maybe an old tablet

with with scripture written on it,

maybe Indiana Jones, for example.

He often goes on quests to try and

find some some hidden artefact act.

Yes, something like that.

So we also have a pursuit that we looked at earlier.

Endeavour, the thing we are hoping to do are starting out on that journey

and of course a long trip.

You can take a long trip that is also a journey.

Pilgrimage.

A pilgrimage?

Yes, a religious pilgrimage.

You're going to

religious knowledge

somewhere, but it might not be religious.

It could be a pilgrimage for.

Yeah, pilgrimage.

What does that indicate you?

That only means you are going to a particular place to.

To receive something in response. Yes.

So the response that you get from that thing

is the thing that you are going

maybe you try to you go on a pilgrimage across a large area

to to climb a mountain and be at the top of the mountain.

So you can you can feel that moment of of achievement.

So a pilgrimage is just basically a journey.

But we often think of it is having some sort

of conclusion or religious connotation.

You place something, you feel spiritually, you feel it spiritually.

Yes, it Could be you might go want to go to the mountains of Tibet

and and and do that or Mecca.

Of course, if you go into Mecca,

which Muslims have to undertake that journey, I believe in their lifetime.

So that's like a pilgrimage in a way.

Well, it is a pilgrimage, a journey,

but specifically a religious journey.

Finally, a journey can also

be used as a verb to travel far.

So basically we talk about nomads.

When we talk about Journey, the journey you're on a journey,

but you can also journey somewhere,

so you can use the word journey as a verb.

So to show that you are travelling,

you journey from one place to another.

So that is an important thing to mention that besides being used

as a noun, it can also be used as a verb.

Normally when we are, we are using it

physically quite.
