whenever I talk about the weather,

but we are having a wonderful day.

What a super day.

And yesterday we were out walking Mr.

Steve and myself and we have the most amazing time.

Not only that, but we saw something

that I've never seen in my whole life,

ever.

Well, I suppose I've seen it on television

and I've seen it

written down and talked about and written about,

but I've never seen it happening for real.

The most amazing spectacle.

So when you describe something as a spectacle go,

it means something you see something you observe.

Quite often

when we are talking about something that is memorable,

maybe something that is outstanding, a thing

that you can't believe you saw.

So yesterday we were out and we saw the most

amazing thing happen yesterday,

something that happens around this time of year

in the countryside, something that farmers do

to the animals at this time of year.

I wonder if, you know what it could be.

Well,

we have made it all the way to the end of another week

and we are just over half

way through the month of May.

June is approaching.

Yes, it's Sunday.

decided to go for a walk during the week,

and we had the most amazing time.

We went out for a walk

and it was lovely.

The weather was nice.

I was suffering from hay fever slightly,

but we had the most amazing time.

we went too far

with some of the things that we said

and Steve agreed with me.

but it was good, it was interesting.

It was certainly different.

you have to do.

Or maybe if you feel as if you must have some sort of

activity or something you should be doing.

Quite often people feel as if they should always

be doing something, some sort of activity.

There are people who are not very good

at sitting still.

I know one person who was like that,

and I'm sure you can guess who that person is.

Also today

we are looking at words and phrases connected to loss.

Not necessarily a bad thing,

not necessarily a sad thing.

Loss.

The word loss and losing can be used

in many ways in the English language.

What else are we talking about today?

Countries.

There are many countries around the world.

You live in one.

I live in one

and there are many others

besides the one that we are native to.

But

sometimes there are countries that we forget about.

We almost forget about them

because no one ever mentions them.

So if we have time,

we'll be talking about that as well.

And we have Phil in the blanks.

Some people like it, some people enjoy playing it,

some people don't enjoy it.

A little bit later on, we will be playing that

as well.

Actually feel as if I have something else

I should be mentioning.

school.

Who remembers their school day?

I know I do.

Many bad memories.

If I was honest with you

and I know I've mentioned this before, I did not

enjoy school very much.

I didn't have a very good time at school

from some of the teachers and also

some of my peers at school.

That's an interesting word, actually.

If something

if someone is your peer,

it means they are on the same level as you.

They are your equal to a certain degree.

We often describe people who are all on the same level

as your peer group,

so maybe your classmates in school,

people who are the same age as you

or associated with you in some way

we often describe as your peer group.

But at school I did not get on

very well with all the other students.

Not a good time.

But today we are looking at people

you used to hang around with.

And there is another interesting phrase.

It would appear that we have quite

a few interesting phrases to look at today.

If you hang around with someone,

it means you are with them.

Maybe they are your companion

or maybe you are their companion.

You hang around with them.

Maybe during your lessons at school

or maybe during your break between classes.

So that's

another question I'm asking today.

and when we are talking about cooking,

we often talk about people who cook for a living.

Maybe chefs may be, well known chefs,

cooks, people who love cooking food,

and quite often they will have what we call

speciality dishes.

that they are very good at making,

or maybe something they enjoy making.

Maybe it is their favourite type of food.

Steve has his own special hearty meal

and he made it last night.

Chilli con carne, spicy,

lots of tomatoes, plenty of garlic

and it was lovely.

And guess what? We had it

with some Mexican style chips as well.

Nachos, I'm sure you've seen them.

They are triangular in shape and they are lovely.

So chilli, chilli con carne

with Doritos or nachos.

Absolutely amazing.

And I have to say, Steve does make the most

amazing chilli con carne.

I believe in reheating food that you have left over.

In fact, we've done it with yesterday's chilli

con carne.

We've actually got some still in the fridge.

So on Tuesday,

Tuesday night, we are going to have some more of Mr.

Steve's lovely chilli

that we put in the fridge last night.

So yes, we will also do that as well.

We love reheating food sometimes.

I don't know if you've noticed this,

but sometimes reheated food

actually tastes better.

So Susan, types of food when you reheat it,

so you cook it and then you let it go cold,

you keep it in the fridge

and then maybe a couple of days later you reheat it

and you eat it again.

You eat,

you eat the rest of it, you eat the last of it.

And quite often it does taste better.

I think it's one of the last countries in the world

to be classed as a as a Royal Duchy.

So that means that there is a Duke or duchess

ruling that particular country

just like it used to be many years ago.

So they used to be duchess everywhere.

and Luxembourg is one of those particular countries?

Does that mean they're ruled by royalty?

Yes, but a duke or duchess.

So they are normally the ones in charge.

So I think it's one of the only ones left.

Also, Luxembourg,

if I remember rightly, Luxembourg has the best

or the highest wages in Europe.

We always heard about it when we were growing up.

I think it was

because we joined Europe, didn't we, in the seventies.

And so everything was Europe, this, Europe,

So for some reason it was always mentioned a lot

I think it's probably when we were growing up.

But Luxembourg was always being mentioned.

We ever have anybody from Luxembourg watching us,

I think

it also has one of the highest GDP rates in the

in the world.

I'm sure it's the second or third

the for the size of the country.

I'm sure it is four per

I think it's per capita if I if I remember rightly.

But there are lots of very interesting facts

about Luxembourg, even though

even though you don't really hear about it

very often anymore.

But I remember growing up in the seventies

when when politics in Europe was very active

because the European Union

was being formed in the early 1970s,

and then it was all being decided how these rules

would be would be set.

And I think Luxembourg was also involved as well.

But it's interesting, isn't it?

The Benelux?

That's it.

The Benelux, Yes, the Benelux.

It was a formation of a very small trade group,

and I think there were three just three countries

involved in that.

I wonder how that's going. Hmm.

Of course,

there are all

sorts of trade groups setting up all around the world.

There's one involving sort of India here and

a lot of Asian countries all sort of trying to group

together, have been trying

to try to form their own sort

of can't remember what that's called.

Now, what is interesting

at the moment, Steve, is there is

there is a slowly because at the moment there

there is a big G7 summit taking place in Japan, Japan

once again is hot property.

Japan, it's hot.

It's a hot place.

And I'm not talking about the weather.

I'm talking about the fact

that a lot of people now are hoping to do trade.

So there is a strange division taking place now

between lots of countries. You have China

getting very deeply

involved with with African nations.

In fact,

they've been involved for about the last 15 years,

slowly building up their relationships with

African countries.

And I'm as you know, I used to live in China

and I'm very fascinated

by that, that particular aspect.

So there are people grouping together.

And when I say people,

I mean countries all grouping together,

but not necessarily

in the places that you would imagine.

So China and Africa now have very strong trade links.

Of course, they're trying to break

the U.S.

dominance on travel and trade and the dollar being the

the world's reserve currency

and all that sort of thing.

They're trying to break that in

in various parts of the world.

It's is probably not going to work.

Or if it does, it's

not going to have much of an effect

because at the end of the day,

no one's going to really trust these other currencies

because the dollar is always trusted

that it will be it'll be stable.

So, I mean, who would buy you when, for example,

and hold that in the hope that, you know,

it could go down 50%

next week or it's not stable enough yet.

So I don't think there's much risk there.

Of course, Japan,

their economy has been dreadful

for about the last 30 years.

They had a big crash and it's never fully recovered.

No, I think I think a lot of a lot of countries

in Asia did suffer slightly in the in the late 1990s.

But now Japan is the hottest place

and there is a lot of trade.

I think this is all relating to technology.

Again, there is another giant leap

in technology about to happen.

It's going to be happening

over the next two or three years.

So this is not I am not talking about that.

I'm talking about just hardware.

So not software, but actually actual hardware.

So I think there is there is going to be a big leap

as we often get with computer processing.

And I think Japan wants to be part of that group.

And of course you have

all the problems at the moment

between China and Taiwan as well.

Now there's a lot going on, Mr.

Duncan and all of that, but I all be out of a job.

But what I'm saying is

Taiwan is is probably the most important

or one of the most important countries in the world

when it comes to computer technology,

chips, microchips, processors.

So all of that stuff.

And I think in the future,

in the next couple of years,

you might see more

and more people

talking about that particular situation

as all of these trade agreements are signed

and sealed.

You have that trying to America

are trying to wean themselves off of that trade

because they realised it's a huge risk.

So yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

It was very funny actually.

I mean, everyone's trying to trying to to

de-risk themselves when it comes to places like Taiwan

and energy from food, Russia and things like that.

Yeah, the European Union have invested 30

billion in chip technology

and apparently 30, I think 30 or 40 billion

over the last few weeks

they've announced investment in in chip technology,

all companies

involved in the development of new hardware,

as you say.

And the UK announced with a big fanfare

that they were going to

to invest huge amounts of money.

Guess how much we invested?

But it won't be much.

It was 1 billion

and apparently it's so pathetically small

it won't have a sign.

We will be highly dependent on Taiwan for many,

many, many years to come.

But I don't think that's necessarily a problem

as long as stability or situation stays the way it is.

And that's

that's what I well, that's literally what I just said.

And that's why Taiwan is going

to suddenly be the hottest country again.

I don't mean temperature.

I mean with with the desirability

of doing trade with them, because there is

is definitely something

happening in the world

of computers and processors and microchips.

All of this is about to take another leap

and when that happens, people are going to be falling

over each other

trying to to invest in those companies.

I think so.

And that's it, really.

So countries you never really hear about Luxembourg.

It's always that country that

that I remember from my childhood.

You from my from my days as a child,

because it was always being talked about.

even if it's fairly mundane things like, for example,

last night I wrote down that I wanted to trim that

big conifer bush outside our front door.

And you did it, and I did it.

But if I had written it down,

I probably wouldn't have done it.

I find if you write something down,

somehow it becomes more real

and you sort of if you think,

oh, tomorrow I'll cut that conifer tree down

and then it doesn't really happen tomorrow, I'll tidy

room tomorrow, I'll clean the bathroom.

That's not really what I'm asking though,

but I'm just.

I'm just asking

if you find yourself in a moment of time

that you have nothing to do.

Yeah, I think a lot of people feel as if

they still should be doing something

or they need to find something to do

instead of just sitting down.

Well, that's me.

So it's very different from making plans,

making plans or things that you intend to do anyway.

But you might find yourself

suddenly in a situation where you have some free time.

How do you spend that?

And unexpected free time?

Anyway, there's one particular channel

I like to watch.

Every week

they give a sort of financial update

about what's going on in the markets around the world.

I know it's boring, but I like to watch it.

And they were asking this question about air was

what effect.

Second, I have and this investor chap, you know,

he owns a company

that involved is involved in investing people's money.

And he said, well I, he said

in theory that's going to

should make companies very profitable

because they're not having to employ so many people

and thus their profits go up

and thus their share value goes up.

But the problem is if they, if,

if that, if they are getting rid of people

and these people are on the dole, who's

who is going to buy the products that they make.

I mean, if people are made unemployed because of AI,

the companies to get more

efficient are laying off their workers

and then there's nobody

to buy the products that these companies make.

So the value of the company might actually go down

something up.

Well, basically you have surplus human labour surplus

human beings

who are

who are no longer required

to do the job when it happening.

This is all happened.

This is why I'm not panicking, to be honest,

because this happened in the 1980s

and everyone was worried.

They were all worried about machines taking over

and automatic machines automated assembly

and there was some impact,

but we all carried on and people still had jobs.

So every time technology comes along

and makes changes,

I think I think it's not always a bad thing, but

there is always

something that is effective

that might be a, you know, transition period.

But then it yes, it slowly levels out a period of time

when an adjustment needs to take place.

But I think before

when Internet came along in computers,

it wasn't so much replacing anyway, I,

I don't know enough about it,

but we'll have to see what happens in in years

to come.

As I said earlier,

the next big step will not be software,

it will be hardware.

The hardware is the next revolution, not software.

Japan is is trying to get in with the group

who all about to to invest money

into microchips and processors

because that's the next big thing again

there's going to be another big, big leap

Chip power hasn't grown

that much now as they've

the limits of you

is they're on the cusp on cusp, Yes.

Of of developing, going, taking the next step up.

A lot of people have problems with their

with their thyroid glands in my mind.

Used to swell up when I was a kid. Really?

I don't know why is to get swollen thyroid gland.

That might explain why you were so skinny and thin

when you were younger because

thyroxine isn't that near term or no,

and that's what regulates your metabolism.

So if you've got an overactive thyroid,

you lose weight.

Yeah, your heart rate goes up,

you burn up a lot more energy.

If your thyroid is underactive,

then you tend to put weight on more easily.

This did happen to me when I was a kid.

I used to have very high metabolism

and from time to time

my thyroid gland would spell slim,

but they've gone down now.

Obviously I can't feel them anymore.

Well, I didn't know that.

That's something you had to have learned.

Something new about you that I didn't know.

And we all found out at the same time that,

I mean, they weren't huge.

They weren't like too giant

golf balls hanging from under my chin.

They were they were just slightly enlarged.

But it was noticeable to me when I touched them

hypothyroidism hyper means

more increased.

So yes, he's got that.

people when they get older they go, it is don't

My mum had one where your thyroid sort of

doesn't necessarily mean it's not working properly,

but you can get growth on your thyroid

and you get these sort of lumps in your neck

and they call them go. It's become huge.

So yeah,

I think it's in our family a bit actually that

I think mine's definitely underactive that,

that would explain why I'm always half asleep like.

But when,

and you were on the bed snoring.

We always look at the new generation

and say that they are the worst ever. Even now.

People say that young people nowadays

are the worst generation and when I was at school,

everyone who was older than me was saying

the same things about all of the kids

the same age as me.

When I was at school,

we were all the worst generation ever.

So I think it always happens.

What happened over those 20, 30 years?

Did you turn out to be,

you know, the best generation ever?

I well, I don't know.

Well, I suppose some will in, some won't.

Yeah. So but we always do that.

We always generalise when we talk about

the current young generation.

They are always the worst, they're always lazy

or maybe they,

they're not interested in things they should be.

But that's just young people.

That's what young people do.

It doesn't matter if it's 50 years ago

or 20 years ago or even now.

Young people are often seen as the worst,

the worst generation ever.

They tests, yes, the Beatles hairstyle.

I mean, that probably wasn't the Beatles.

So that was probably more sort of

a lot of pop groups have that sort of, but it sort of

went along at the front

and then dad looked down at the sides

I wasn't allowed to grow

my hair long and I had lovely hair when I was younger.

I escaped from my parents

and I could do what I wanted.

It started falling out.

So it was too late. Yeah.

My I lost my chance to ever have long hair

because it started falling out of my early twenties

and it was too late to grow it. So you know?

And that's the one thing I hope

I manage is to figure out

how to make you not bald anymore.

Well, there are lots of ways.

The latest one the way is it's a big craze now in in

Asia, where you just take a little bit of hair

and it and you stick it to the front of your head.

You've probably seen the commercials on the Internet

because they are everywhere.

But this is something that's very big in Asia,

because apparently

and I remember this from when I was in China,

the worst thing that can happen

to an Asian male,

especially if you're young, is to lose your

it's apparently it's one of

the worst things because very few Asian guys.

Well I don't mean that in a derogatory way

I'm just using the word Asian to mean people

around Asia China China anywhere

but yes to lose your hair is

is almost I suppose it's almost shameful.

So it is a big thing.

Whereas here it's very common to see

men who are losing their hair even if they're young.

But yes,

there are many ways you can go to Turkey, of course,

and have a hair transplant very cheaply.

Yeah,

I saw

a very funny picture the other day, Steve, of people

waiting in an airport to leave Turkey.

And clearly

most of the men had just had hair transplants,

maybe because their heads were bright red

and some of them had bandages on

and and there was lots of them in the queue.

So there is a big it's a huge industry,

but for men who are losing their hair,

they go to Turkey

and they have

they have a hair transplant and then they come back

and they have to

they have to treat their hair very carefully

because you can get a very bad infection

and you don't you don't want that.

So next time we go to Turkey, maybe we

maybe we should have a hair transplant. Yes.

I don't think I would want to go through that.

I mean, what happens

because they take it from the back of your head some.

Do you get patches at the back of your head?

They take the hazards individually

and they plant each one end with a needle.

They they push the hair into your scalp.

It does not sound very nice how long it takes.

It takes a very long time.

And they have to put each hair individually.

But it has to be perfect.

They they make little holes in your scalp

and then they plant the new hair in those holes.

But then afterwards, you have to be very careful

because you can get an infection.

And if you do, you you could be in big trouble.

I'm not going to bother.

I'm going to wait

for the

the solution that you rub on

and then it magically reappears, which because I think

all my hair follicles are just there,

they're still there, they're just dormant.

And the right stimulus

in the form of some wonderful new

chemical nature

is developing something secretly in his lab.

And it always amazes me that they can't solve that

anyway.

I mean, you can transplant somebody's heart,

you can do all sorts of things.

You can go to the moon,

but you can't cure baldness, which amazes me.

They haven't cured that.

I mean, I'm over it now.

I spent 30 being depressed about it,

but I'm over it now.
