are having a super duper day we have made it all the way to the end of another week

and we've all managed to survive almost it's sunday

yes here we are again we are back together and i hope you are feeling super duper today

we have lots of things coming up today we have the sentence game of course a lot of

people like playing the sentence game sometimes i am criticized for making it too hard and

sometimes i am criticized for making it too easy sometimes in this life you can't win

whatever you do even if you try to please everyone quite often you end up pleasing no

one so i will try my best today i will try to make you all happy in my own special way

first of all once again sorry for being late sometimes when i'm preparing my live stream

the time actually goes by very quickly i don't realize just how fast time goes when i'm preparing

my live stream on sunday especially during this month because of course during february

i'm also doing some special daily live streams as well 28 days of february or as i like to

call it you may have noticed i like to refer to this month as february very nice so that's

what i'm doing during this month i'm doing actually live streams almost every day i don't

know how i'm doing it but i am and it's been a very hectic month so far we are only seven

days into this month and already i feel as if i've had enough to be honest i really need

a very long lie down on the floor i hope you are feeling super duper wherever you are in

maybe he has accidentally poisoned himself with his own food last week mr steve cooked

the most amazing meal would you like to have a look at what mr steve made last week in

our air fryer because we have a new air fryer that mr steve bought for me and gave to me

last christmas so this is what mr steve cooked the other night can you guess what it is though

what is the meal that mr steve made the other night and i think maybe this meal has made

mr steve unwell i don't know why because i'm perfectly all right

there it is on the screen right now so that is the meal that mr steve made for me the

other night i think it was i think it was wednesday night he made this for me very nice

very nice meal i enjoyed it but steve the next morning was complaining that his stomach

wasn't feeling very good so i don't know what happened i was perfectly all right so what

is the meal that mr steve made for me the other night can you see what it is oh okay

we we would appear to get yes we we have a lot of answers coming through already very

quick i keep forgetting that there there is no delay anymore so we used to have almost

30 seconds of delay but now of course it's only around seven seconds thank you very much

well yes meatballs meat balls is what mr steve made last week with some lovely lamb and also

lots of herbs and spices and i like them to be honest i thought the meatballs tasted lovely

spot the white van all you have to do is spot the white van so we see as soon as you see

easy it's so easy anyone can play all you have to do is see the white van going across

the road driving along the road in the distance but of course i'm always very strict with

any more white vans i think i just saw one go across the screen yes it is a little bit

misty today however in the east of england they are having very heavy snow can you believe

it so over towards the east of england they are now under a lot of snow although here

we are not having any snow very little snow at all has anyone seen another white van i

think we had one a few moments ago we are going to wait for a few more moments to see

if we can have another white van on the screen come on white fan where are you

i can't wait

of course it is sunday and i would imagine that there aren't many white vans driving

around on sunday because during the week the white vans are very busy doing lots of things

like delivering parcels i will wait for a few more moments oh i think that was a cyclist

that's unusual is that is that someone on a bicycle did you just see someone go by on

a bicycle then i thought that was a bicycle it can't be

maybe the cyclist is riding a penny farthing

oh come on this is very disappointing i think we've only had one van so far it must be a

white van

yes we have we are having a lot of storms a lot of snow storms coming in from the east

at the moment blowing across parts of germany also across the netherlands and then right

over to england so at the moment in the east of england a lot of people are getting heavy

snow although looking out of the window at the moment we are not having much snow here

in fact this is the view right now outside of the windows this is the view right now

at 28 minutes past two on a sunday the 7th of february and we are live from much wenlock

in england in shropshire a lovely scenic part of the world and there is the view from my

studio window right now so i can definitely confirm that we have no snow not a single

flake of snow has fallen

around here in a few moments we have mr steve joining us on the live chat yes we do have

a look at one of my full english lessons would you like to have a look at an excerpt from

one of my lessons so here we go this is taken from full english number 26 and yes there

are literally hundreds of english lessons on my youtube channel hundreds i'm not joking

is an excerpt from full english number 26 and then after this hopefully i'm keeping

i don't know about you but i love hearing gossip to gossip is to talk freely about another

person's life the things you have heard about another person regardless of whether you know

it to be true or not the word gossip can be used as a noun or a verb a person who gossips

is a gossip they like to gossip about other people the things said are the gossip you

can hear gossip from others gossip can be described as hearsay title tattle rumor scandal

you will often find that very small towns and villages will have local gossip a person

who seems to know all about what is happening in the surrounding area is the local gossip

be careful what you say to her she is the local gossip around here so gossip can be

the person spreading the rumors or the thing that is being said some people like to read

about celebrity gossip on the internet or in magazines a gossipy person will often be

have you ever seen a prefix in an english word well in fact there are lots of them in

fact there might be more than you realize there are many occurrences of prefixes in

english words that serve to dramatically change the meaning of the original word for example

the prefix pseudo before a word denotes something as fake or artificial for example pseudo science

refers to a practice of science that has not been accredited or qualified it is seen as

untrue and meritless another good example is the prefix quasi which defines something

that appears real but is in fact the opposite for example quasi-political an action appears

to be stating an opinion but in fact is doing the opposite you might say that these two

examples have similar meanings another example of a prefix is retro this particular prefix

means to go backwards or regress for example retro migration which means return to your

place of origin migration back to a place of origin the prefix an before a word denotes

an opposite meaning such as unapologetic there are many prefixes in the english language

some of which take the form of combining words such as anti auto and omni

have you heard of the internet every ugly i think my uh housekeepers deal with all that

sort of thing it's where common people come to look at pornography oh we don't say common

people they're just mere workers on my estate you know they will help out i pay them you

know a living wage that's good yes well it's absolutely this is a fascinating experience

mr duncan i i'm not sure i've ever been how do you say it online you are online yes um

certainly on something fascinating well my driver dropped me off later so earlier on

this morning mr duncan what car did you use oh i think you just used the range rover i

think some kind of you know four-wheel drive thing i've never driven it myself what's happened

is is the rolls-royce in the garage uh i don't really they're a bit vulgar these days rolls-royce

says i think you'll find that uh sort of landed people like myself like to drive around in

something where all four wheels are driven okay well well in a pale sort of a dark sort

of highland green would you like to say hello to the great unwashed out there because where

are they mr duncan they're out there watching on their their devices i can't see them see

them but they can see you oh maybe i need my binoculars so that i can see them you certainly

need something oh well so far so good i can't see anyone though this is the problem they

can see you okay well let's assume that that is the case so and i will say uh hello goodbye

and all sorts of stupid things of course we are known for being a bit silly you know i

feel that the character is starting to slip i can't keep this up forever mr duncan i've

noticed you know it was it was going really well and then i could i could slowly tell

that mr steve's character was slow i might slip in and out of it i need to draw attention

to it mr duncan do you ever watch a terrible movie and and the people in it the people

in the movie are trying to to put on accents but but during the movie the accents slowly

disappear and i think that that's what was happening then with you when i grew up mr

duncan i was we i had a very posh accent in fact uh we ought to get out the recordings

of when i was younger hello by the way everybody this is me now it's it's no longer lord steve

but that hat i said this to steve a few months ago i said this a few months ago steve you

look brilliant when you are wearing this sort of clothing it really does suit you and we

have this slight fantasy don't we one day we are going to buy some clothing and we're

going to walk around much wenlock like country gentlemen and everyone will have to bow well

you'll have to you'll have to follow a few steps behind me i think yes so you can be

lord steve and i can pretend to be your servant i can be your servant sort of bowing behind

you so maybe i'll drop in and out of character because i understand mr duncan that you are

uh the theme of today's live stream is being posh is that right yes we are looking at some

words and phrases connected to being posh and it is an interesting word i always think

the word posh is used in many ways so we always think of something that is high class or something

that might be sophisticated but posh is often used in many other ways as well if we are

describing something if we are trying to impress someone with something we we had a neighbor

who lived around here she's gone now she's moved away so i can talk about her but we

had a neighbor and everything she did mr steve everything she did everything she bought everywhere

she went it was always somewhere posh posh and that she would say that she would say

oh i went away last weekend i went away to a very posh hotel it was never an ordinary

hotel never ordinary or oh yes last weekend my my uh my children came and we went to a

very posh restaurant very posh we all know people like this so that she could never go

anywhere or do anything without it being posh i know i mean there's a chain a very well

known chain of department not department stores food shops called the co-op in the uk okay

that's a bit low brow well the co-op is it's just it's just a grocery shop yeah it's a

supermarket chain supermarket chain average sort of chains very popular here in the uk

i don't know about other countries whether you have co-ops there or something called

the co-op anyway it's just an ordinary shop and uh she said well i went to um went to

my shopping the other day i was in this area and i went to a co-op oh but it wasn't an

ordinary co-op it was very high class very high class everything's got to have that i

i don't think there is such a thing as a high-class co-op oh that's right but we all know people

wasn't she moving somewhere else well we've got to be careful what we say well it doesn't

matter now she's gone but she might be watching us she didn't even leave her forwarding a

dress that's true she didn't you know when a neighbor moves away quite often they will

give you a contact address

there was absolutely no way that this particular neighbor had any intention of staying in touch

with us she she kept refusing to tell us where she was moving to she wouldn't tell us where

she was going or anything however she did say oh where i'm moving to has a very posh

co-op can i just say there is no posh co-op there isn't i keep forgetting there's only

a three second delay or is it five seconds today yes we have about yes it's very quick

well that happened earlier because i was i was doing something earlier and i suddenly

realized all of the replies were coming up straight away so i'm still getting used to

the fact that there's no delay anymore so this is virtually spontaneous there is no

actual delay anymore i just as you know i like to to read comments off the live stream

before i come on we've got somebody new called norfolk dash cam yes norfolk dashcam is i

believe in norfolk and i think they are very fond of dash cams i think well um it might

be it might be worthwhile today because they're expected to get a lot of snow they already

have really yes the east of england is now under snow yes they haven't had any yet but

it's on the way oh i see it and where it depends where you are in norfolk because norfolk's

a bit further north than kent yeah we've had no snow nothing anyway norfolk dash cam hello

voice with this hat on by the way have you started it's unusual is this still your posh

voice well when i was at school because we moved my parents came from very humble beginnings

you know they didn't come from posh families or anything but we moved from one part of

the country to another when i was a young child and if anyone if you were a child and

your parents moved to another area a long way away from where you were originally born

then your accent is not going to be the same as where you move to and for children this

can be quite traumatic yes so this was this is my voice i used to speak a lot more poshly

when i was when i was a child i said hello mummy uh mommy is tea ready mother i'm not

joking that's how i used to speak and of course we went to school we moved to a very rural

area okay in gloucestershire but i thought gloucestershire was posh no well there are

posh areas but if you go to a normal state school then the vast majority of people are

just ordinary people who were born there and grew up and they had the local accent i think

steve wants to say come on i'm not saying that i'm just saying that if you grow up in

an area you adopt the accent don't you yeah of that area that's it so in a rural area

there's a very different accent willow

accent and they're all like you know they're speaking like that and i was going hey hello

nice to meet you and you can imagine the reaction i never lived it down i was i was called a

snob i was called posh all sorts of names and i had to live with that all through schooling

but of course being tough and resilient as i am i won them over with my charm and humor

wow but i anyway anyway you punch up a few of them and they soon soon get you soon get

respect i can't imagine you fighting anyone oh i used to get into fights mr duncan all

the time i think so i did i did you used to fight the girls did you pull their pigtails

yes but yes so that's it so if you move from one area to another and you've got a different

accent okay then you know in a school environment we're talking about teaching then it's going

to be something that the children will pick out those differences and use them against

you and mock you well you know because that's what children do yeah children are horrible

children can be really mean and spiteful i mean they would call me names they would make

me cry and i would run all the way home and that was just last week that was just a few

days ago valentina says something funny here maybe we should call me sir steve sir i don't

think so well yeah but no but it worked that's what they call me at work really yes i think

they're being ironic no because because they so because i've got obviously follicly challenged

shall we say

i look like a certain actor don't i yes well which one uh the one that uh patrick stewart

patrick stewart or or bruce willis patrick stewart i think you look like bruce so they

used to joke that i look like patrick stewart who was in uh star trek and various other

films that's what he's known for uh and so they at work as a joke they call me well i

don't i don't think i look like bruce willis anyway you're ruining what i'm saying say

i can't i don't know what bruce willis says

but so if he a yipi oh no you can't you can't say that they used to at work they think i

look like patrick stewart so they call me as a joke sir steve so saturino you're um

you are right okay to call me valentina sorry to call me cersei i that's how i'd like to

be addressed yes okay

we are talking about being posh so there are lots of words you can use steve lots of words

you can use to describe a person who is posh or maybe appears posh so can i just say we

are not judging anyone we're not judging people or ourselves and and to be honest with you

we are like the odd couple for various reasons one of us is so steve comes from a posh family

no they weren't your family was posh your father steve's dad in the 70s used to go to

a restaurant and he'd open his wallet and all of these credit cards would fall out there

would be about six or seven credit cards that is true and then he would know more than that

he would show them to everyone in the restaurant so yes yeah in the 1970s if you had a credit

card you were considered very wealthy which is it's kind of ironic really yes that borrowing

money that isn't yours was considered to be a sign of being wealthy well it was in the

1970s because i mean these days anyone can get a credit card in the 1970s you had to

have a certain income and be quite heavily vetted by the credit company before they would

give you a credit card have you been vetted yes i've had my worming tablets mr duncan

yes if someone vets you it means they they look into all your history and your financial

detail to make sure that you know everything you say about yourself is true well nowadays

they call it a credit check so they will check to make sure that you are worthy of borrowing

money however these days especially these strange days need i say more a lot of people

are being given money lent money credit is much easier to come by at the moment well

i like what tomic said oh okay he's prostrating that himself before me frustrating frustrating

don't you have to have your finger up your bum to do that that's a different thing all

together mr duncan oh okay then prostrating prostrate not prostate prostate prostrate

you've got to get that that reminds me i've got to have my prostate exam next week yes

if you if you were to take the r out of prostate it means a whole different thing yes literally

literally a hole yes if you prostrate yourself in front of somebody it means you you bow

down okay then now down and probably get you you get down on on your knees okay and like

that in front of somebody i like the sound of this it's a subservient gesture okay so

if you are bowing or if you get down on the floor and and you are showing i suppose it's

a sign of respect well i know it's yes so yes i suppose it could be i think so because

if you if you go to some countries and maybe if you go in front of the monarchy maybe the

king or queen or remember the royal family quite often you will have to bow down or sometimes

you will have to get very low down on the floor yes but it's these days certainly in

this country you would you wouldn't do that you might just sort of do that you know bow

a bit good morning women may curtsy before royalty but uh you wouldn't go right down

on the ground on your knees and you know do all this this is something i said right at

the very start seems very demeaning sorry i'm talking stuff i was just finishing

i love it when steve you must defer to me

can i just say something steve just please let me say something i can't remember at the

very start of the pandemic i said that instead of shaking hands because of course people

don't like to shake hands anymore because of all of the germs and the bugs but we could

bow instead so i said that that would be a brilliant idea so instead of shaking hands

we can just show respect by bowing a bit like in japan you see people bow in japan and and

i think other asian countries as well quite often people will bow as a way of showing

respect yes but that's fine um i don't remember you bowing when i came on though but never

mind uh atomic's now lying face down uh before me so i like this i like the way this is going

you know so if others want to follow then this sounds like some sort of this sounds

like some sort of message he's sending

no no we're going to look at that later we are jumping ahead slightly can do we have

flanks of the world coming up in two minutes for all those fans of flags of the world so

very quickly steve because we are running behind time

are we rich so when we think of people who are posh the the the first thing we often

think of is rich they are rich they have money so a rich person might be seen as posh although

it's not necessarily true although you will often do that you will think posh equals rich

yes but not necessarily because i think you can have a little money or some money but

still be posh so maybe you still have a nice house and it's clean and tidy maybe you have

you have a nice new carpet in your living room maybe you have some nice furniture so

the house can be posh but you're not necessarily rich so that's what i think anyway oh yeah

that's that's very true you can pretend to be rich by acting in a posh way so you can

you know have a have a certain accent yes uh you can dress in a certain way yes and

appear to be rich and posh so they're not necessarily be that's it you have the appearance

of beings of being posh a little bit like mrs bucket in keeping up appearances that

sort of thing we are 20 seconds away from three o'clock steve so we'll come back to

this topic in a moment because it is coming up to three o'clock you know what happens

at three o'clock don't you steve um yeah no oh okay is it the sentence going it is not

the sentence game that comes a little bit later on but yes it is three o'clock now and

it's time for flags of the world

and we're back we didn't prepare me for that that was subtly done this to do didn't you

see us fading up no i was i was thinking about something else so what i said earlier is we

are a little bit like the odd couple so steve comes from a a wealthy family and i don't

come from a wealthy but but your fam okay well don't don't keep saying no but in comparison

well that's what i'm saying in comparison steve steve now don't say anything when i

say this steve comes from a wealthy family and i come from poverty basically so we are

like the odd couple in real life so steve his father bought the house he had a speed

boat a speedboat does he have a boat well a yacht a yacht

oh okay he didn't have a speedboat he had a yacht which which sounds even more posh

don't like to talk ill of my father but yet my father was a sort of person well that's

not right that uh likes to appear to be wealthy uh but you know i'm not necessarily i'm not

gonna say anything else but you know let's just say debt was a was it was a a word that

was commonly used you are you are ruining my lovely illusion as well so st steve came

from a snooty family and i came from a common family well we were definitely posh yes you

well yes we were definitely posh we've already talked about that even though we weren't wealthy

yeah we were definitely i mean you were common i mean look at this this is steve on his first

day at school i mean look at that there is mr steve oh yeah that is me yeah that is mr

steve he's off the boarding school i think it was eaton uh or was it taro or was it harrow

yes it must have been very harrowing so there is mr steve there is mr steve he's packed

his bags yes he's off he's got his little cane and his top hat and he's going off to

school so that is actually mr steve how i've fallen since those days just just to show

just how snooty mister and this is true miss steve used to have his friends come around

at the weekend and they would play croquet it's true i wish i was joking they would play

croquet in the garden whereas i i was raised on a council estate we didn't own our house

we we we had to rent our house from the council sometimes we would have to hide behind the

curtains because people would knock on the door after money and we wouldn't have any

and i remember one time we had so little money we actually went inside all of the furniture

the sofas the sofa and the the armchair and we took everything to pieces trying to find

money i'm not joking i wish i was joking about that so i come from i come from a poor background

and steve comes from a wealthy background so we're not wealthy just let me do me a bit

please let me do my best it's going to be accurate so we are the real odd couple in

comparison well income why do you keep arguing did you did your television have a coin box

on the back of it steve i'm not uh no no ours did we had to put money into our tv to make

it work and we had to put 50 pence so if we wanted our television to work we had to put

some 50 pence pieces in the back of the tv yes i mean it's true that my parents obviously

had had a higher income coming in than yours but my both my parents came from very humble

backgrounds they didn't have wealthy parents or anything you know my father my father worked

very hard and and uh you know made it good for himself so you come from new money yeah

well it's not even money they never really had very much money anyway it's it's the illusion

that i'm just creating yes that's it okay fine this is a live stream by the way can

i steve takes this far too seriously can i just say yeah but i want it to be accurate

it is accurate i don't want people to get the wrong impression that picture was not

me it is mister it was not me it is that it wasn't me that's mr steve so uh there is mr

steve he's even got a little carnation in his coat that actually that's an actor isn't

it it isn't an actor who is it then it is it somebody from i can't remember where i

don't i've seen that picture before just an actor from anywhere this is this oh steve

just let me explain it's not me yes so so this is definitely mr steve just before he

went off to boarding school and and that is that explains why mr steve is the way he is

nowadays you know this that explains a lot because we know what happens when you go to

boarding school you know what happens you you get

what extra jelly at the weekend and we're not talking about the meals i don't know what

you're talking about mr duncan uh but yes we've got to come clean no currently if you

come clean it means you you you admit that you were lying and now you're telling the

truth yeah this is come clean this is this is a famous photograph actually and i will

show you the whole photograph so i'm glad you said that steve because i am going to

show you the whole picture in its entirety so there it is there is the photograph but

now i'm going to show you the rest of the photo

so this is actually a very famous photograph and it shows the differences between the classes

and when i say class i mean the types of people and there you go you see steve so this is

actually a very famous photograph from many years ago so you can see that's you on the

right is it yes this is what i'm trying to do but you kept interrupting me so there is

mr steve's upbringing oh yes and there is mine so that's me over there commoner so that's

me that's mr steve and that's me so i i was one of those lads and and steve was was that

one there but those aren't pictures of us but they are representing where we came from

mr steve me mr steve me god blimey mate cool blimey man if you've got experience any change

steve somebody asked somebody asked earlier on for for for a london accent cockney accent

yes who was it yeah yeah how are you doing how are you doing how's the old how's the

old uh uh indoors i'm going up the old apple in pairs ah we're gonna teach you some fabulous

nouveau rich no i mean no not really my my parents really grew up in a time when britain

was starting the middle class the middle classes who never existed in in britain or in the

uk before the 1906 really there wasn't really a middle class no there was only there was

only wealthy people and everyone else wealthy people and everyone else you were my when

my mother and father grew up they came from very you know ordinary humble beginnings and

uh there was 98 of people were just fairly low income okay and then the middle classes

came in the 1960s 70s okay and 80s and my parents of course i grew up in the 70s so

that's how my parents were typical middle class white collar worker you know dad went

to work with a shirt and tie okay in management uh and uh the middle classes were given became

prominent yeah so we have lots of money to spend i should explain okay steve we've got

we've got your whole family history now middle class is an interesting word that is used

a lot because we now see the middle class as the majority of this country so if we are

talking about england quite often when we talk about the middle class it would sound

as if the middle class is just a small part but in fact i think it would be fair to say

that middle class is the majority of the class in this country and those with lots and lots

of money those who are really genuinely rich only have they they are only a very small

percentage of the of the country of the wealth in england so it's very interesting to look

at that can we look at some words very quickly steve of course because we are so behind time

can i just say as well it is no you can't very quickly uh please don't say class and

this sort of thing is is not unique to the uk but it's very you know these stratas in

societies middle class it's very much a british thing levels levels and in america but but

it you know this is what people associate like british people i think i think it exists

everywhere well i know it does to a certain extent but i'm just saying what we're talking

about today that that sort of the classes it's typical british sort of way of life people

people always associate that with it's true i think i think certainly if if you are if

you are seen as upper class but also middle class maybe as well but i think nowadays there

are many classes there are many levels in society of people who have a certain standard

of living so i don't think there is just three classes anymore lower class middle class upper

class i think there are actually lots maybe dozens of different classes people who all

have different levels of living so i think so yeah we've got to look at the word steve

come on then for goodness sake i it's a big subject actually we could talk about it all

day yes but this morning mr steve was lying on the bed moaning and groaning because because

of his tummy oh yes last week it was constipation this week it's stomachache yes can't seem

to get a break there is always a medical emergency with mr steve thanks again for sharing all

my medical problems with millions of people millions i wish it was here we go another

one steve so here's another interesting word something that's classy yes again it doesn't

necessarily mean posh but something classy maybe it would appear to be sophisticated

a classy restaurant so just because the tables look nice and they have candles on every table

and the menus come with that little little piece of it always has a little thing coming

out the back of it that hangs down a little tassel so just because the menu has a little

tassel hanging out the back it doesn't mean that it's necessarily high class it just looks

classy it is classy so yes class is associated with something you respect yeah somebody is

somebody a classy person is somebody who

they present themselves in a way that is is is very you know self-effacing they're not

they're not overly they're not overly showing off they're not nasty to people they're just

nice people who behave well towards other people okay steve uh that's a classy person

okay moving on refined we've got to get through this steve we can't we can't put the words

up we can't give lectures for every word refined again a person now when we talk about being

refined we often talk about the way a person behaves so so this word actually refers more

to a person's behavior find like for example lord steve earlier you see so when lord steve

appeared he he appeared refined yes a person who loves the fine things in life maybe art

music fine wine you see they are refined because of because of their manner or their their

taste in certain things they'd never swear they'd never they'd never do something that

uh that made them look bad in society refined person talks very well very precisely and

uh you know it ignores things that are uh unimportant and trivial and okay and don't

have any uh we would never we ignore someone for example who was being nasty to them yeah

we would just resist that okay that's it we've got to move on steve only 20 seconds per word

god found me who's got yeah i'll come to that later polished a person who is polished so

again this can also refer to a person who has changed their way so you might describe

a person who is polished as a person who has changed their manner or maybe the way they

dress so so polished can be refined or something that has been changed to appear better or

of better quality so polished if you were a polished english teacher yes it would mean

that you were very good at what you did you had lots and lots of practice yes and training

and training expertise you are polished yes here's a good one steve i'm not sure if this

applies to us culture well it certainly applies to me cultured a person who is cultured yes

if you are cultured it means again you like the fine things in life maybe you like listening

to classical music or maybe you like going to the theater the opera or maybe you you

like to watch the ballet you appreciate the the higher accomplishments of of human behavior

and an activity like art ballet opera you appreciate that so you don't listen to jay-z

or justin bieber common you listen to rachmaninoff and a little bit of brahms or a little bit

of mozart or maybe a little bit of elgar oh especially if you live here we do like the

elgar in the uk an educated person might also seem posh especially in the way they present

themselves with what they know their knowledge you might describe a person is educated so

it is strange once again how we we put these things on different levels so we often think

an educated person must also be sophisticated and maybe also maybe they come from a wealthy

family but that again isn't always necessarily true so it is it is strange a lot of these

words are actually used but they don't necessarily or they don't that they're not used necessarily

accurately or they don't paint an accurate picture i think so oh here's a good one now

some people say that i am like this i am a little bit chic chic do they oh yes sophisticated

fashionable fancy pants we haven't had a fancy pants today shall we have a fancy pants oh

fancy pants

come on steve join in don't expect me to join into that do you mr duncan's a bit below me

i would say fancy pants fancy pants if you say something's below you you would somewhere

you would say someone would accuse you of being a real snob yes wouldn't they hiroco

is going good night hiroko i know it's very late in japan very late there hiroco is going

another one so we had sheik yes a person who is sophisticated maybe in their taste or in

clothing the things that they like to wear sophisticated you see a sophisticated person

is a person who is knowledgeable educated maybe they like the finer things in life we

know a few people who are sophisticated we have some friends and they are really really

wealthy they are they are loaded well yes as your mum would say but they wouldn't say

they were sophisticated no well that's what i'm about to say you said okay oh you see

so just because but but they are quite down-to-earth people especially the the the man that we

know we're not going to say their names because i think they would be very embarrassed but

they are wealthy there but they're quite down-to-earth down-to-earth people however they they do

have some sophisticated tastes for example wine they love their wine don't they so they

so they buy wine and it's not it's not five pounds a bottle it's sort of 50 pounds there's

the sign of a posh person yes who who doesn't buy five pounds supermarket wine yes if they

spend a posh person will spend more than 10 pounds on a bottle of wine yes so yeah if

you go to somebody's house and they've just got five pound bottle of wine from the local

supermarket they're not posh now we're not not judging people here well this isn't about

judging we're just explaining words so a sophisticated person has has the appearance of of liking

the fine things in life but fine dining yes that's it anyway here's a good one now this

is one that is often used when we are talking about very wealthy people from good stock

now this sounds like we're talking about animals doesn't it well that's where the phrase comes

from i think yes so we might talk about a person who comes from good stock how would

you describe that that means that well if you're talking about animals for example cows

or horses for example good stock means that the parents of the of the children uh are

genetically have very good genes so they might have very good genes for intelligence or looks

uh and so that when those two parents so i mean that's why there used to be lots of arranged

marriages in the past because parents would like to pick if their son or daughter was

say very beautiful or very intelligent uh they would want to pick somebody from a another

family who had similar qualities so that the good stock is the good stock of jeans at the

gene pool from those two people coming together and the chances are you will then get very

good children intelligent children beautiful children and you do see that you definitely

do see that in families so when we talk about the aristocracy the aristocracy is are those

that in the past of course used to own most of the land in this country so when we talk

about the aristocrats we are talking about people who have lots of money lots of land

and quite often they want to keep their families it's very hard to talk about this without

sounding awful but they don't want their blood to be tainted by anything that might not be

as good as them you see so it's all about the bloodline we often talk about the bloodline

it means the quality of of that person and it's awful really i mean i don't like even

talking about this i feel slightly awkward talking about this but that's what it happens

that's what you would do if you wanted to breed the best racehorse yes uh that's what

you would do or or or the best cows or the whatever uh you you would you you would pick

the animals that looked the fittest and healthiest and that of course health would have come

into it a lot yeah i mean if we're going back 100 or 200 years you would want to be married

to somebody who came from a family that was strong genetically to resist disease that

would be quite important of course it is it's a natural thing we don't do it so much now

we don't think about it so much these days but of course you would be thinking about

that a lot 200 years ago before modern medicine and things like that you would you know you'd

want to you'd want to marry somebody who looked healthy yes and wasn't sick but there was

always good but there was there was always that that slight feeling of superiority so

you wanted to keep the blood pure i mean these are horrible words i hate saying these things

but that's straying into no but but this is it i mean this is why in the past royalty

often royalty would marry into other royal families not necessarily here in this country

so there are many occurrences where the royal family would would marry other members of

royal families from other countries and it happened a lot here during the well we're

going back to a couple of hundred years 300 years it happened quite a lot sometimes the

marriages were arranged when the the intended people were only children and that's how that's

how it happened sometimes it was almost like a fair exchange to keep everything pure so

so so it wouldn't be tainted it's very strange but the only problem is sometimes the health

problems could come from those things especially if you had bad genes in both families so you

could actually end up having a worse effect so you end up marrying your cousins yes and

it did happen and have a good uh yes you see if you marry yes it would it would they used

to marry in their own families and it doesn't turn out very well a couple of more an upper

class person is their behavior a person who seems upper class like lord steve today at

the start of mr steve when he first came on so you should have your nose in the air plumbing

sort of accident that sort of thing feels like sounds like you've got a plumber stuck

in the back of your throat hello there hello you do it better hey well of course that's

how i grew up with my father and mother that's how they talked all the time you know

can you say hi old sport hi old sport well i wouldn't say hi i'd say hello okay well

hi is is a bit common really so yeah hi old sport but you said hello hello alex paul hello

hello i can't do it you see the thing is in uh nobody really talks like that in the uk

anymore no but we we've often watched television programs in the 1970s because we like watching

things from the 1970s and it's amazing you people were being interviewed randomly on

the street and that posh accent was very common amongst lots and lots of people in in england

um in that time but it's gradually gone lewis makes a very interesting point and i've been

trying to get a word in edge where it's all right that in europe he says uh the middle

class has disappeared all but disappeared bit by bit since the 1970s and the same thing

has actually happened in america the middle classes have been obliterated uh through uh

redistribution of wealth and taxes and things like that yes played a massively important

part in reshaping society completely we've had it a bit in this country but i think in

in the uk that the the class structure is broken down people don't defer to to to sort

of upperclass you don't really think about that anymore but it's still there i think

probably more than uh than uh in other parts of europe that would be an interesting conversation

to have lewis yeah about what has happened well it's also interesting that that luis

mendes is now living in france and let's let's not forget that the aristocracy the ruling

class were pretty much

it's not approved of almost well it certainly wasn't during the french revolution a lot

of a lot of people literally lost their heads yes uh says did i have high hopes that were

accomplished well that's a sore point uh i don't think i've achieved everything i want

to yeah we're we're sort of joking a bit here today aren't we what i think what palmyra

is saying is that have i underachieved because of meeting mr duncan have i have i sort of

married below my class that's what they'd say in this country wouldn't they well first

of all first of all we're not married i know but you know what i mean if somebody married

you see my in a way my my uh grandparents my my mother's uh my mother's parents even

though they both and my father's uh my father's parents thought that my father had married

beneath them by marrying my mother at the time even though really there wasn't that

much difference because they wanted they wanted my father to marry somebody who was very educated

i hope your mother wasn't watching because my father was very intelligent sorry sorry

steve's mum but you weren't there my mother's told me the story i see you said that she

she weren't the first choice she felt as though she wasn't really liked by her uh parents

in law because that she wasn't uh didn't come from a good enough uh home and didn't have

the proper education and all that sort of thing and it is true this is something else

that i don't mind saying it is true that that mr steve's dad did not approve of me

never would have approved it middle yeah they see valentina says another point here it's

not that funny uh but there'd be other reasons that would be more prominent than that but

you're not a millionaire yes you know what i mean liberal class is disappearing more

and more and uh yet these times in particular have weakened the middle class and the gap

between the wealthy and the poor is becoming wider yes i mean that this is often debated

now that we are returning to sort of the feudal times almost when there was no middle class

there was only rich and poor yes i mean let's face it the middle classes are disappearing

but they're not going towards the richer and they're going towards the poor end yes well

i think poverty poverty is something it's always there but as as the middle class grows

and then shrinks i think poverty also grows and shrinks so as the middle class becomes

narrow the the the poorer class become well it increases you see so so i come from a poor

background my parents didn't have any money and my mom had to work and she had a lot of

difficulties in her life she was disabled and my mum still had to work she had no choice

because she had three hungry mouths to feed including mine and can i just say my mouth

my mouth is a very hungry mouth indeed mrs t did girls get the same education as boys

when your mum was at school

well the opportunities weren't there no for women back in my mother grew up in the 1930s

and 1940s uh and back in those days women the women's place was definitely in the home

women were only expected to get married and have children and be housewives of course

that's totally changed i mean the the the opportunities for women have changed beyond

all recognition uh now yeah which of course is a good thing because i think the revolution

started at the end of the 1960s so we've seen this progression anyway so as as people earn

more money as the the economy grows the standard of living slowly goes up so even though i

live in england or we live in england there is still poverty around there it still exists

so not everyone in england is is a millionaire i mean we're not wealthy i wouldn't describe

us as wealthy i mean i can't go out now and buy a solid gold watch i can't i don't own

in fact i don't own anything that's valuable i think the only thing i have near to me that's

valuable is mr steve what about your camera well yes cameras but those are things for

for work so that those are things that i use in my work so all of my valuable things all

of the things that i see is valuable are are to do with this it's very strange so i don't

really have anything jewelry gold earrings or gold teeth nothing i would say the most

expensive thing you've got is it your computer i think my computer must be the most expensive

thing i own and that's that's what you're watching now this is coming through the computer

which you your wonderful viewers contributed towards many years ago and when we did a fundraiser

about three years ago was it it's almost three years since we bought that computer together

yes yeah it's true anyway we have some negative words to do with being posh here's here's

a good one steve if i can just get my other thing back up on the screen posh words so

here are some negative words how about this word snoot snoot yeah somebody who looks down

upon other people and thinks that they're better than them see that's that's the danger

of uh that you can become somebody who thinks that you're if you're snooty it means you

look down on other people uh and and you think you're better than them i've already said

that yes i have just repeated myself i thought that was an echo uh yes and it's a it's a

very it's a nasty trait trait something that something you do a lot of it's something that

you commonly do a life habit a habit a trait yes yeah a snoot somebody who looks down on

other people and thinks that they're better than them um for whatever reason it may be

just that you think you've got more money than somebody else yeah and therefore you

think you're better than them yes it could be that you think you're more attractive and

therefore you're better than them or it might be that and quite often this comes from the

parents so if your parents are like that often you you'll be like that snoot they used to

say i was a snoot at school but i wasn't because they thought and that's the thing if you're

posh don't just assume that because you're posh which i was posh yes not going to deny

that that you're also snooty yeah sometimes they go together but which comes back to a

query somebody said early asked us about before is posh and snoot the same yeah they can be

a posh person can be snooty but a posh person can also not be snooty if there are two different

things altogether yes by the way tomek we haven't forgotten utomik tomek asked what

about the word swanky something that's swanky is just high class so something that is swanky

maybe you can have a swanky restaurant so it's used as a sort of adjective to show that

something is high class or sophisticated something that is swanky we went to a swanky restaurant

we went we stayed in a swanky hotel swanky it is lovely yes high-end something that is

seen as sophisticated fazizito says yes does snoot mean snob no he doesn't no but quite

oh snoop means snob yes yes it does yeah that's the same it's very interesting that the word

snob is also used we often use snob even nowadays so if a person seems to be too full of themselves

even if they're not wealthy they might appear or they might pretend they might feel as if

they are superior to other people like like our neighbor one of our neighbors they don't

live here anymore but they're gone snoot yes so you can be a snoot or a snob you feel as

if you are superior i believe the word comes from from the word for nose you see so you're

snoot you are snooty your nose is always pointed upwards because you feel superior if for example

you somebody invited you to a party and your parents thought that or you thought that they

were maybe not in the same class as you uh you know and uh you might say oh i'm not getting

i'm not going to their party no uh you might say to a friend or you know why your friend

somebody might accuse you of being a snob or a snoot yes because you didn't want to

go to a party or somebody who oh their parents haven't got much money i'm not going to their

party that would be snooty and snobbish you're judging people what what you're effectively

doing if you're a snoot or a snobbish you're judging people really on their wealth yes

and how much of it they've got yes i haven't got and maybe also their class as well so

even if they're so if you send your children to the wrong school you might be seen as is

not as sophisticated so maybe if you don't send your child to a private school they just

go to a state school instead you might look down on them but yes it's a there are people

like that around i think it's fair to say that there are people who who do like to look

down on other people people that are posh people that feel superior to other people

if they have money or even if they don't have much money they can still have that that character

of looking down on other people so interesting yes interestingly enough going back to lewis's

point and somebody else about about the middle classes uh the current new um government in

america apparently are going to try and restore the middle classes because i think i mean

because they think it's very important for the economy and just for the just for society

in general they want to move people from the poverty end back into some kind of wealth

or yes you know a better standard of living in order to because i mean potentially if

that gap keeps widening then there's going to be a revolution at some point certainly

okay they can't keep widening the gaps in the rich and the poor at some point there'll

be a revolution probably probably best to keep that to ourselves but that's what happens

in all societies after january the sixth what's happening on january the 6th no what happened

there was that they stormed the capital building in in the usa oh yes but that was a different

reason yes but i'm just saying we don't want to sort of start talking about that because

it's still a little sensitive yes of course yes and of course anyway let's not get into

politics no well i wasn't really talking about politics anyway i was talking about just class

so class isn't really politics what is contained within the heads of a human being isn't necessarily

to do with class so that thoughts and opinions are not necessarily the same thing so your

outward appearance or your outward character can often define you people think that i'm

posh some people think that i come from a wealthy family as i said earlier i don't i

don't come from a wealthy family at all my family were very far from wealthy maria points

out that says that she still has students she has students that still can't buy books

um of course when i when i grew up i don't know i don't know if if it's the same now

i think funding for schools has dropped because you know we we could always get books and

pencils and yeah anything you wanted when i grew up the school would supply everything

yes so when i was at school even my my school not steve steve's posh school but my school

yeah we would have everything supplied books textbooks exercise books writing books pens

pencils so everything would be supplied by the school nowadays even here in the uk and

certainly here in england people now have to pay for their own things so they have to

buy their child's exercise books they have to buy their children's pens and pencils and

everything well even school meals it's amazing which when we grew up all school meals were

free everybody got free school meals but that's not the case now yes uh and when i first used

to get free milk you used to go to school you had got a bottle of milk and used to drink

it i don't know when you used to drink it but it wasn't a big bottle by the way but

you would get milk a little tiny bottle of milk we used to have every day they took that

away uh and of course during this lockdown pandemic we've seen we've seen families who

were used to sending their children to school where they get because some families if with

lower income families would have got their school meals for free and they weren't getting

them and there's been a big campaign for for people staying at home now because all the

schools have been shut yeah for them still to get the free school meals i think being

a big campaign the original the original argument was during the school holidays so during the

six six week holiday that schools close for six weeks normally in a normal year but but

if you had free school meals then you wouldn't get those meals during the school holiday

but now the government have to change their mind after a lot of pressure and there they

are still doing it of course class in this country is very the reason it's so prominent

and talked about a lot is because we've got a royal family and that makes that that obviously

if you've still got a royal family you're likely to still have classes in society and

valor asks will the uk become a republic i would say that's highly unlikely very unlikely

that will ever happen i mean even in australia which is a commonwealth country not so long

ago they voted to keep the queen yes and that's not even the uk yes uh so i would say every

now and then you don't see we haven't seen anything for years about trying to form a

republic in the there are there are people that would love that of course can i just

say in my lifetime in my lifetime i've never known it i've never heard ever anyone ever

talk about having some sort of uprising here and getting rid of the monarchy so i i've

never actually even heard of it the only thing people often talk about is the next in line

so a lot of the debate quite often is about who should take over so this is one thing

a lot of people are talking about at the moment here in the uk is who will take over when

the queen and she will sadly it's a matter of fact that the queen will die and then someone

will have to take her place some people say prince charles but he's not very popular i've

never quite understood why prince charles isn't popular but he does have some rather

so there is always i think having the monarchy gives us something to look up to and that's

why australia still loves the royal family the the uk royal family is still loved in

australia it's very strange even though thousands of miles away and no real connection anymore

because they're they are independent but still they are part of what we call the commonwealth

it's interesting yes i mean you you do get the the thing with the royal family in this

country is they have adapted uh you you've got to hand it to them they've adapted in

order to remain popular so they've become more approachable um you know i mean if you

go back 50 years uh or more you the the the the royal family were very remote they didn't

really contact they had very little contact with the public well queen victoria was famous

for really not liking the public very much at all so and and the interesting thing about

victoria she was the first queen to actually start publicizing herself so after her husband

died she did actually disappear from public life for many years and then came back into

the public eye but then because of the the revolution of photography queen victoria began

to to be seen everywhere you could even buy picture albums with queen victoria inside

she was the first demonic to actually be photographed a lot in fact some people believe that she

is the most photographed person or one of them in the world ever yes the reason we've

still got a royal family is they've been very very clever in adapting themselves to remain

popular uh but of course when there there are occasions when people think the royal

family are overstepping the mark um and becoming irrelevant like when princess diana died there

were calls then to abolish the monarchy yeah there were at the time because they didn't

think that the royal family responded in the right way to that and they had to adapt and

change after that in order to remain relevant and as long as they can remain relevant i

think we'll always have them that's it so from my point of view i think i think that
