a little bit different on wednesday first of all it's just me there is no mr steve every

wednesday because steve has to work unfortunately he has to do his little job in his office

so he has no choice about that can i say hello to everyone on the live chat i will say a

special hello in a moment but of course yes we have made it halfway through the week we

have reached that magical point

i'm going to have a david letterman i guess his beard makes him look like father christmas

maybe i could have a beard that looks like james brolin oh who remembers james brolin

from the 1980s so perhaps i could have a beard like him and that is what i said i said can

i have a beard that looks a little bit like james brolin but unfortunately the young lady

didn't know who james brolin is so i had to instead say you know can i have a beard like

like that guy from bareback mountain so so yes so she said oh i know him so can you make

my beard look like his so that's what she did

no i'm not saying that i look like jake gyllenhaal i don't look like him at all i don't think

so he is far more attractive than me i think so so here we go then before anyone else says

mr duncan we like your beard i've changed it again i was starting to think that my big

grey beard made me look too old you see mr steve hates my beard however this morning

you so thank you mr steve for giving me the encouragement by insulting me to change my

feeling very hungry at the moment

because there isn't much food around yes it is still winter here in england so that is

the view right now out of my studio window we might have another look at that a little

that look very similar to each other and those words are historic and historical historic

historical now even though these words look very similar they do have slight differences

in their meanings historic is an important moment of history so when we say that something

is historic we are saying that it is an important moment of time that everyone will remember

for many many years historic and an important moment of history and then we have historical

when we look at historical things we are just looking into the past we are looking at things

that happened in the past so they don't have to be important things they can be anything

that happened in the past do you see so historic is an important moment of history historical

is relating to the past historic and historical are used in slightly different ways historic

means famous or important in history as in a historic occasion whereas historical means

concerning history or historical events as in historical evidence so something that is

found from the past thus a historical event is one that was very important whereas a historical

event is something that happened in the past so we have historic which is something important

and we have historical which is relating to the past so today i suppose you could say

that the 20th of january 2021 is a historic day because today there will be a new president

of the united states i'm sure you've seen the news benjaloon says yes mr duncan today

trump will leave the white house and you may have seen on the news he's actually forgiven

or should i say pardoned lots of people who were accused or convicted of crimes and this

is something that the president of the united states can do he can pardon people you see

normally just before christmas he will often pardon a turkey in fact it is normally done

just before thanksgiving in the united states hello to barong oh last year i bought a red

bird feeder like yours did you really now have you managed to attract lots of birds

into your garden have you had a lot of luck attracting the birds some people do complain

because they find it very difficult to attract certain types of birds into their garden but

one of the problems you see is quite often depending on where you live in the world only

certain types of birds will come into your garden or fly near your house you see so that's

the problem for example here where i live there are no starlings so where i live we

never see any starlings however the place i used to live at the place i lived at before

i don't know why but in that area there were hundreds and hundreds of starlings and every

year their their young would all come into our garden the garden we used to live at and

we would get hundreds of young starlings all coming into the garden to feed and drink the

water and on sunday i might show you some of the wonderful video footage that i filmed

many years ago when i lived in my previous house

meanings the words are frill and thrill firstly the word frill with an f means an attractive

addition or decoration you make something look more appealing by adding frills you might

see a frill on a woman's dress or skirt you might add frills to a pair of curtains so

as to make them stand out more so something that makes an item seem more appealing is

a frill in business you might see frills being added to a particular type of service this

hotel is worth staying at just for the frills the extravagant services added to something

can be described as frills of course the opposite can also be true if a business wants to cut

costs or make something more affordable then they might take away the frills a basic service

without the unnecessary comforts or luxury can be described as no frills the air ticket

to france is very cheap but it comes with no frills you are getting the basic flight

with nothing added as a bonus a basic service is a no-frills service then there is the word

thrill which can be either a noun adjective or verb something that makes you feel a sudden

rush of excitement can be described as a thrill it was a thrill to see bts in concert last

night i was thrilled to be asked to speak at the seminar the sudden rush of excitement

is a thrill you feel the thrill your breathing becomes deeper your heart might suddenly start

racing you are feeling the thrill the thing that gives you the thrill is thrilling such

as a thrilling fairground ride a thrilling movie or a thrilling expedition the thrilling

thing is the thrill the thrill is what you get from the thing that is thrilling you an

excited looking person can appear thrilled the smile on his face told me that he was

thrilled to be there so as a noun thrill names the feeling as a verb you can cause a person

to feel thrilled and as an adjective a person can appear thrilled so there you have it frill

and thrill two similar looking words with very different meanings

it's true that the english language can be quite confusing especially when it comes to

pronunciation good examples of this occurrence are the words lose and loose chose and choose

firstly the word lose means to mislay something it describes the sudden loss of an item or

person the spelling of lose often causes confusion for many when it comes to written english

the word chose is used in the past tense as something that has been chosen you chose it

i chose this dress yesterday whilst out shopping so despite the similar spelling the word lose

and chose are pronounced very differently then we have loose and choose firstly the

word loose means the state of slackness or free movement i have a loose tooth i should

go to the dentist i guess then there is choose which describes the action of making a selection

you select something you choose an item i will choose my wedding dress tomorrow it's

worth remembering that while chose and jews are related lose and loose are not thus proving

that the english language can sometimes be a very confusing thing

let's have a look at some unusual words would you like to see some strange english words

okay then here we go on your screen right now you are going to see some english words

they are real words by the way they're not made up they're not fictitious or fake they

are strange english words that are used sometimes or quite often in the english language so

let's have a look shall we at the first word

the first word is syncopate syncopate now this is an interesting word because it can

also re refer to something that we do when we are using a language so the word syncopate

as a verb means to soften or strengthen a beat in music so if you make the rhythm or

the beat in a musical piece if you make it softer or if you slowly make it louder or

stronger it is called syncopate you syncopate and to shorten the pronunciation of a word

so sometimes when we want to pronounce a word and we don't want to say the whole word we

can actually leave parts of the word out a good example is library library so a lot of

people say i am going to the library to read some books but in fact the word itself is

pronounced library library but people say library library i suppose another good example

is saturday saturday people will say saturday saturday i will see you on saturday so instead

of saying saturday they say saturday

i don't know why i'm losing my voice today i have no idea why saturday so if you shorten

the pronunciation of a word to make it easier to say another good example is gloucester

gloucester so gloucester is actually a different pronunciation to the actual spelling of the

word we will say i am going to gloucester to visit my auntie but in fact the spelling

of gloucester is not as it is pronounced there are extra words or extra letters in that word

that are not pronounced because it's easier to say i suppose another example is lester

leicester which is a large town in the uk in the midlands leicester so it is often true

that we do shorten words we shorten them when we are actually pronouncing them because it's

just easier to say easier to say

andy says i have a problem pronouncing reliable reliable well reliable is not normally shortened

so these are words that are really shortened in general use so i'm not talking about mispronouncing

the words i'm talking about acceptable forms of words when they are actually spoken which

is a very different thing indeed here's another word for you we're looking at some strange

english words this is english addict on wednesday as we approach oh we're coming up towards

three o'clock here in the uk three o'clock in the afternoon here's another word cursory

cursory it is a noun a brief quick action or moment of time so something you do very

quickly cursory so if you do something fast quickly or during a very short period of time

the action is named as a cursory view or a cursory look so you will look at something

very quickly briefly cursory it is a real word and it is used quite often in english

here's a good one a lot of people use this word to describe me quite often this word

is adult adult that is how you pronounce the word it is an adjective and it describes appearing

unable to think so if a person appears unable to use their brain or to remember things maybe

you you could say you seem very adult today mr duncan you seem adult a person who has

difficulty thinking or they appear to have difficulty thinking we can say that they are

adult also another meaning of adult is there it is a rotten egg so an old rotten egg can

also be described as adult so if an egg has been left too long it's gone bad and perhaps

you can no longer eat it we can say that it is adult adult appearing unable to think or

a rotten egg adult

another strange english word for you oh i like this word

this word salacious salacious

this once again is an adjective the word salacious means a sensational or exciting event salacious

or perhaps and more commonly a scandalous story of a sexual nature

so when we talk about a salacious story or maybe something you've heard from another

person we can describe it as salacious gossip salacious a sensational or exciting event

or a scandalous story often of a sexual nature

naughty another one now oh that's an interesting word the spelling and

also the pronunciation is very interesting dichotomy a dichotomy it is a noun and it

names the contrast between two things seen as opposites or as entirely different the

dichotomy of two things so maybe you might say the dichotomy of science and religion

you might say that those two things quite often are opposites they are seen as contrasting

each other quite often in general conversation dichotomy i like that word here's another

one oh another interesting word fallacy fallacy noun it is a noun an untrue or mistaken belief

or an untruth stated as fact so something that is said that is wrong it is incorrect

it is a fallacy it is wrong people are saying something and they believe it is true but

you can say no that is a fallacy it is a fallacy it is not true the thing you have heard is

not true it is a fallacy i like that here's another one oh here's an interesting word

if you are a fan of movies this word was used in a very famous movie starring i think you

know who i mean ditto is the word ditto this particular word is a noun and it means to

state something which has already been said it has been said once and is being repeated

or said again to respond with the same words so quite often we use that in an informal

way so quite often informally you might hear a person say something and you think the same

thing so you will say ditto it means yes i think the same thing the same thing and of

course there was that famous movie with patrick swayze and demi moore called ghost oh my love

my darling

and in that movie demi moore says i love you and patrick swayze says ditto it means the

same thing so he's saying i love you as well

i have a feeling that patrick swayze in that movie had relationship or difficulty bonding

or showing his affection you see i think that was why he said ditto you see because he didn't

really want to say i love you you say in the movie

that's it yes sam didn't say i love you to molly he wouldn't say it yes you are right

so it just means the same thing the same thing the same thing i just you just said i think

as well you respond with the same words without actually using them ditto here's another one

clarify oh i like this word now i suppose over the past four years we have had to do

a lot of explaining and a lot of research trying to find out what is real or what is

the truth to clarify to make something easier to understand to make a point clearer to prevent

a misunderstanding using clarity so quite often if you explain something in a very easy

or clear way we can say that you are offering clarity the clarity is what you are actually

trying to express you are trying to make something appear clear and easy to understand clarify

you are trying to make something appear more understandable here's another word oh i like

this word very similar to one we had earlier

erroneous oh erroneous it is an adjective it is a word that describes an untruth or

a mistaken belief so a person that is saying something that is not true you can say that

it is erroneous it is an error you are saying something that is not true an untruth or mistaken

belief to say something that is wrong or untrue erroneous i like that word so i hope you enjoyed
