and because of that I have decided to stay in the studio today so today I will

talk about patriotism or flags it's always a very delicate subject because

some people might think that the flag represents one thing and some people

might say that the flag represents something else

it's perfectly fine and I think during the World Cup there's nothing wrong with

putting up an England flag because it shows a bit of patriotism is getting

people all thinking together and rooting for the team an excitement family

get-togethers watching the match having a few beers that's what it's really all

about and then put them away afterwards for another four years mainly it's about

drinking beer and going and forgetting all the worries of everyday life

can still smell the garlic on your breath it was a delicious curry and I

think they must have made lots of lots of improvements to the restaurant

because it was about as far away as the experience we had 5 years ago as it

could possibly be yes look it so we will be going there again

so no longer do I have to make a curry on Friday which I do every Friday yes

although I will be because it'll get rather expensive going out for curry

very moved by all of the effort that you've gone to not only filming and

traveling but also you made some special t-shirts as well with my face on I don't

think anyone has ever made a t-shirt with my face on before ever in the world

no that's quite incredible and I would like to also add I think it's amazing

what your what the teacher has done for her students there to take them on that

wonderful trip and the fact that you've inspired them to do it yes I think is

even more amazing but it also reminded me just watching that of how wonderful

Turkey is how beautiful everywhere is and reminded me of our trip to

Chevallier Island all those years ago because we've been we've been to Fethiye

Chevalley island and also a place called cash as well so we've been to Turkey

twice and both times we had an absolute fantastic time food amazing people warm

friendly absolutely amazing so two of the best holidays we've ever had in our

lives absolutely absolutely definite and and

then to get a tribute it must be wonderful mr. day yeah it feels amazing

I I'm I'm I can't talk too much about it because I feel very moved by it quite

emotional in fact if you feel inspired by the way by that video maybe you can

president I'm not sure about name of school after you I'm not sure if I want

to have such responsibilities anyway we mustn't let your head get too

big mr. Duncan no it isn't I mean the good thing about me is I don't really

have an ego as such a lot of people say I'm a bit of a show-off or a big head

especially my mum thanks for that by the way get you junket my mother thinks I'm

a big head a jumped-up get a know-it-all so that's really really nice thanks a

lot for that but it really does my confidence the world of good but in fact

I don't really have an ego I'm quite a shy very reserved person quite often I

can be very very introvert and shy your are most of the time so I'm not a person

who flaunts my ego I am just a person who happens to teach English in an

interesting way and that's it that she does love doing it this is the thing

mr. Duncan loves teaching English that's why he does it I'll give your overriding

driving factor yes is that you love teaching English and imparting your

knowledge on to people who want to learn that's certain that's what you were

doing in China and that's what you're doing now continuing your work across

the world with your inspiring English videos yes

so so I was doing that in China and that inspired me to teach lots of other

people as well through the internet and that's the reason why I love this

Steve I believe we have some football words coming up so these are words to do

with football and of course we love football especially at the moment

because it looks as if England are going to get through to the final

oh my goodness didn't we have some fun there mr. Duncan we had a great time

this morning making that video it was it was absolutely boiling hot that's the

reason why we were late starting today because we were so exhausted after

filming outside in the boiling hot Sun so we made that this morning and I think

it's the most exercise that I've done in a long time all I can say is I really do

appreciate just how much work and effort goes into becoming a professional

footballer that's all I can say but they're still not worth two hundred and

fifty thousand pounds a week yes some football players some football players

get a million pounds a month maybe actually get to know wrong maybe we all

should I think all I can say is I think I'm going to improve my football skills

a little bit more and maybe during the next World Cup I might be playing for

England yes who knows so mr. Steve so mr. Steve has some words

connected to football but also they are terms that can be used in everyday life

as well they can indeed so let's kick off haha let's kick off with kickoff

kickoff is in football or in a lot of games is where you start the game by

kicking the football from the center of the of the pitch

so that's kickoff everybody knows what kickoff is in football but when any

event a game meeting or a discussion starts it means that it's you kick it

off saying if you have if you've got a group of people together and you're

trying to get them to talk then when they start talking somebody will start

it and that's kicking off the discussion hmm so it doesn't have to be just about

football so to kick off is to start something to get something underway we

could also sometimes use it if there is treble or violence or a fight

we can say that we can say last night in the pub or in the bar some people got

very angry with each other and then suddenly it all kicked off it means it

means they started to fight and hit each other which often happens in football

anyway so even that is connected to football it is it is so you're right

there mr. Duncan you've got one on that I haven't got on my list here back of

the net the show kicks off mr. Duncan's live English kicks off at 2:00 p.m.

every Sunday it's an would be an example of a

sentence where you could use that phrase okay you can kick off your shoes you can

kick off your shoes it means you can shake your legs about and your ankles

until your shoes fall off it is a fun way of removing your shoes that's it and

you can force somebody to leave an area you can kick them off so if somebody

comes onto your land and you don't want them to be there

you can literally kick them off get off my land that's just another way of using

get off my land you might not literally kick them off but you could literally

kick them off and push them off so there we go kick off these uses of the word

there mr. Duncan so you added an extra one so to tell someone to get up get off

your land or off your property you you kick them off you kick them off

I suppose in another way you can also say kick out so to kick out someone if

you kick someone out it also is very similar you kick them out you get rid of

them you kick them out another one please Steve another one a booking a

booking it's a formal warning a punishment to a person who's been

suspected or accused of an offense so you get a booking it's the same word you

could use the word caution as well there so if somebody fouls somebody else or

doesn't play by the rules in in the game you give them a booking so it literally

means you write their name in a book what are you doing mister don't

grumbling mr. Steve towards me come on come

wait okay there we go okay so you give somebody a booking so the referee comes

over to you gets out his notepad and takes your name

down and you're booked because you've broken the rules in the game that could

be football of course it could be other games as well so and often they will

give the the player a yellow card yes hey so a yellow card is a warning and if

you get a red card you have to go off the field you are sent off your book for

a specific or on offense and that's what you would use that phrase for in that in

that connection when it comes to football but it's also an arrangement

that you make when you reserve something so if you want to book a table at a

restaurant that also would be a booking so you phone up and you say I want to

come at 12:00 at 8:30 for a meal with five people and that is a booking at a

restaurant so a reservation if you make a reservation you can book something and

then that is put aside just for you and that could be of course anything it

could be seats at a theater it could be a train ticket you could book a train

ticket in advance or a hotel room many things like that so that's a booking

also an engagement for the services of an actor or a performer you booked

somebody to perform a certain task for you

a booking any others mr. Duncan you can yes well a reservation is probably the

most common form of that word so a booking you booked something so to book

is to reserve you booked something it is put aside and we describe that as in

noun form a booking means it's literally written in a book yes

so to book something is the verb you booked a holiday you booked a

hotel room it means you contact the holiday company or the hotel and you ask

them to reserve the holiday or the room for you you booked the holiday you

booked the room it is a booking although these days it would go on to a computer

and unlikely and in football it is a warning awarding and you a policeman

might stop you and pull you over for speeding and say that and you would say

to your friends I've been booked for speeding hmm he might say I'm booking

you for speeding no there we go another one Steve one more and then we all do

something else shall we oh wait here's an interesting one aggregate Oh or

aggregate score okay then an aggregate score is two combined or what aggregate

means to combine or collect things into one or a hole so an aggregate score

means that you add up all the different scores say that you're playing five

matches and other teams are all playing matches and you add up all the scores

for all the different games that's the aggregate score is the is

that you've added them all up together and you come up with one score so that's

the aggregate score so in football and in other matches teams play lots of

matches against each other all over the country and the winner is the one who's

got the most points so you might play one match and get one goal you might

play another match and get three goals or no goals and you add them all up

together all the other teams have been doing the same thing that's the

aggregate score you add everything up together you can get an aggregate Det

so if you're in debt for example you might you might owe money in a credit

card you might owe money for your house or your car repayments if you add them

all together that would be the aggregate debt you've added them all together and

just come up with one figure but it also means other things mr. Duncan it means

loose particulate matter for example stones and gravel and sand

all mixed together is called an aggregate

yes what a mixture of things all mixed together and then you mix it in with the

cement and you end up with concrete yes so again it's similar isn't it so

aggregate can be the portions of things that are added together to make one

thing that's it sand so much gravel mix them all together with cement and you

get concrete synonyms could be added whole gather or combine hmm aggregate

aggregate it's a very strange word and we've ever used that word before mr.

dink aggregate but of course it is using football as well when they are trying to

work out who won the game when there's no definite winner yes it's it's if

you're having lots of different competitions everywhere doesn't work in

the World Cup is just whether you've beaten somebody or not but you might

often have games where the scores are added up from all the different matches

that are taking place and the team that's got the most points wins and

that's called the aggregate score that's it and the thing I like about the World

Cup is each match even if there isn't an exact result at the end there is no

clear winner they just carry on until someone wins and I love that idea so

first of all they have injury time or extra time and then they go and play 15

minutes each way until someone wins and then if that doesn't happen they go into

what they call a penalty shootout nobody likes the penalty shooter no it always

seems like a disappointment because you've sat there for 90 minutes and then

you've had to sit there for another half an hour and then after that you have to

have all of the suspense and the drama of the penalties so everyone gets a

chance to kick the ball in until someone wins but often often that that's an

indication that the teams are so closely matched to each other though they're

neither team of there's very small differences between who is the better

team and the only way of really doing it it's

the shootout but it was disappointing because everybody wants to see a clean

win if that doesn't work they have a talent contest where they get all of the

football players to sing the song and then there are some judges by the

football pitch and they give their scores for each song that the

footballers have sung and then if they can't come to a decision then they have

trivia questions where they have to answer questions on geography history

and also science and then if there's no clear winner there then they just go

into the middle of the pitch and they all have a fight and the last person

standing whichever team they belong to they are

the winner sounds good to me be very entertaining great what about a fight to

the death maybe a fight to the death that will be good like in Star Trek what

comments have we got on that well you always tell me not to do that because

then only we can see it until he put it on the main screen but now everyone can

see it drama it's injury time or added time the

15 minutes is called extra time that is correct

hmm mut toto hello I'm tai how are you doing very

my grumpy today no that's perfect as I went to visit my family yesterday not

England for the World Cup thank you very much isn't that kind and also at the

moment if anyone has any updates or any news on the young boys that are being

rescued at the moment from the cave apparently two have been rescued

successfully and they are still doing it right now

so yeah there you go Mina is here what is the reason for the red

sign in the England flag well that is just that the design that they chose it

is the George Cross it's called but some people get it confused with the Union

Jack which of course is the flag that expresses Great Britain or the United

Kingdom which is a combination of the English flag the Welsh flag and a

Scottish flag it's a combination so there is a difference between those

flags Pedro says they sent you a video he did yes Pedro Belmont sent a video

about two years ago that I played at the start of one of my lessons did you yes a

long time ago I don't remember that mister maybe well I wasn't doing the

videos with you them so perhaps I didn't see that yes I remember Pedro when you

sent the video you were outside you're outside looking very very cool and yes I

remember very well yes I still have that video I still have it somewhere in my

archive any War were a couple here mr. Duncan mr. Steve has another one so fire

away cap right so of course we know about caps because mr. Duncan is wearing

a cap so it's a sort of flat hat with a peak on the front and that's called a

cap for example a baseball cap but there are many other types of similar hat that

look like that and my father used to wear one many people used to wear sort

of peaked caps in the olden days but now the course everybody wears baseball caps

and we get very strange looks when we go into town when mr. Duncan is burying his

baseball cap because everybody thinks that if you wear a baseball cap then

you're a bit dodgy you might be a bit of a criminal you might be trying to steal

something if a person is but another use of the word cap if a person is chosen to

represent their country in a team that means that they've got a cap you say

that they've got a cap he will win his first cap for England on Saturday in the

match against Italy I've just an example we're not

playing Italy on Saturday I've just used that as an example so

that player may be a footballer if we're talking football teams it's the first

time he's played for England he's got his first cap but that that's just it

really a phrase that we use in England if somebody has played for their country

for many times you might say for example that they've been capped for England for

four times or five times or six times that's just an expression that means

that they've been chosen to play for England in a team but if you put a cap

on something there's another use of the phrase if you put a cap on something it

means that you set a limit so for example the council budget was capped at

1 million pounds per year if you're setting yourself a project and you don't

want to go over a certain amount you might cap your budget so if you're want

to buy a new car for example and you don't want to spend more than ten

thousand pounds you might say my cap is ten thousand pounds I'm not going above

that level a cap of course is also the lid on a bottle and mr. Duncan is very

conveniently taking the cap off his bottle as we speak so there we go so

that's four uses of the word cap but there are in fact lots of others as well

it's a small amount of explosive as well a cap often used in in guns for mock

guns up but we have them when we were boys growing up yes caps they make a

loud bang so any any small explosive that doesn't cause any damage so it

simulates the sound of a gun without firing a bullet it's a cap but I think

that you also have the think that is described it might be part of a bullet

that the first bit that ignites the ignites everything else I think

called the cap as well it's also for example mr. Duncan if you somebody

knocked your teeth out in a fight or you have diseased teeth you would cap them

or cover them with something new so if you have your teeth capped it means you

have nice bright sparkling new white teeth because a fake covering is put

over your old team or even if you rock you if you are a glamorous film star

like George Clooney you might have horrible teeth all yellow and in in miss

shapen and horrible but then you can go to the dentist and they will put some

new teeth over your old horrible stinky teeth like George Clooney or that that

woman from ghosts or that guy from James Bond they've all had their teeth kills

all that that woman from Star Wars what about who was the the woman that sang

the theme from Titanic that would be Celine Dion Dion her teeth if you look

at Celine Dion videos before she was famous her teeth were very wonky at the

front Celine Dion had everything changed and then her teeth suddenly were perfect

so she had them capped she had a chip off she had everything done she had a

teeth change than those changed in fact I have a feeling that they just they

just replaced the whole of Celine Dion's head with another head another use of

the word cap this one's slightly complicated

it's the final event in a series of events that was the same as the others

so for example and that can be good or bad so if you for example you're a

footballer and you have a very good season so in all the matches you've

played you've maybe kit that scored a goal in each one and then the final game

comes along and you score the winning goal and you can say that that player

capped off his season with a goal in the final

game so that it's like the final action the final action yes but it can be used

in the negative as well so if for example you had a very poor season you

didn't score any goals or it was cricket and you didn't score using you kept

missing all the catches you could say sarcastically he capped off or the team

capped off their season with another lost match so you can use it positively

and negatively but again it's the final action the final final action yeah

and of course matches everything that's gone before to cap something is to is to

also stop something from becoming too expensive or maybe you control the price

I've said that already of something oh okay I was busy around the corner

deleting some people not listening to a word I was saying no I wasn't I was

actually getting rid of I was getting rid of some of the people in the live

chat who were writing rude things was they I didn't see that doesn't surprise

me - good job there's a delay he's he's the

final one I found this is a nice little word dribble dribble that's something

you do when you were asleep that's one of the examples I've got here Oh an old

man when he goes to the toilet he'd be alright and let me carry on whenever

pre-empting what I'm about to say mr. Duncan an old man can I switch you off

he dribbles football in football and basketball

if you move with the ball kicking it or knocking it gently to keep it away from

another player moving kicking or tapping the ball that's called dribbling you're

dribbling the ball in order to out outwit one of the other teams members of

the of the other team so he dribbled the ball past all four defenders would be an

example of that so dribbling so as mr. Duncan has

already alluded to dribble is a liquid a liquid that drops slowly or flows in a

thin stream is called dribble so if a person dribbles it means they've got

saliva coming out of the corner of their mouth or a dog of course can dribble or

rule a dog yet the dog would drool but a person would dribble so if you fall

asleep on the set E then you might have your mouth open you might start

dribbling from the corner of your mouth like mr. Steve does when he goes to

sleep sometimes when I'm watching telly I'm watching the television and mr.

Steve has fallen asleep he starts to dribble all down his t-shirt you can

have even have dribbles of sauce as well if you're cooking something you can

dribble little bits of sauce into the into the ingredients so it's a small

amount of liquid that drops it's a thin stream but if you dribble the ball of

course the dribble the ball is just kick it in front get as we were doing you

kick it in front of you but not too far away you dribble so small kicks small

gentle kicks you keep the ball nearby but you kick it you dribble to try and

outwit to try and get the ball past somebody else that's it so one of the

other players and you can use that same phrase in basketball apparently and of

course if something is coming out very slowly

maybe the water is not coming out very quickly from the tap you can say that it

is just dribbling out dribbling as we had last week when the water was cut off

in turn the tap and the water was just dribbling out mmm wasn't a nice fast

flow just small amounts of water coming out and of course some men of a certain

age when they go for a wee-wee they might find that they don't have a big

fest flow of wee-wee maybe it just comes out a little bit at a time maybe at

night very slowly certain men of a certain age

when you get to a certain age your your wee-wee only it just dribbles out it

takes about five minutes to have a wee I don't know anything about that mr.

Duncan me neither I'm not old enough no me neither

but there we go that dribble so five phrases there I think there may be five

there that are used in the world of football that also can be used

in everyday English so there you go thank you very much and that useful it's

very very useful it was useful to me because it filled 20 minutes of my

livestream very useful oh we could be on all night as you all know it's as we get

going it's a gorgeous day by the way look at the view today look at that

isn't that stunning that is a live view out of my studio window the camera is

right next to me just to prove it oh you just put your fingers across there yeah

there is a live view looking out across the landscape from the studio and also

another view as well okay oh my goodness isn't it a glorious day we are really

the word set oh I see so so when you give an example of the word set you have

to shout I do is that a rule it's a rule yes warm weather is set to continue

which means it's just going to go on and on

to stay nice for at least another two weeks it's set yeah the weather is set

mr. Duncan its thickness yes we get its thing to go on the way it is we

understand a long period of time okay we get that one

we understand that use of the words game one in every live stream mr. don't don't

wing of live talking of live what did we do yesterday what did we pick up from a

shops now for those who have been following the story we have some live

tarantula some big spiders staying with us at the

moment now there is something that we didn't think about when we agreed to

look after these spiders and that is that they need feeding we have to give

them food apparently you have to give them live food so food that is actually

still alive which is something that I don't feel very happy about and orders

Steve but we had to do is to Steve to you but we had to do it so we have no

choice so yesterday we went to a shop whilst we were visiting your mum and we

found a place that sold live crickets so not not cricket like that the sport not

that one so cricket as in the small insects with the long legs that make the

difficult grasshoppers crickets crickets so we have some live crickets at the

moment and we have to unfortunately feed these crickets to the tarantulas so they

have something to eat my friend said that you don't need to feed the

tarantulas for months we were feeling a bit sorry for them well I read I went to

a website that tells you how to look after these giant spiders and apparently

you have to feed them twice a week yes now so no wonder they've been trying to

get out of the cage they haven't looked very I must admit they have not looked

very happy during the past having a couple of weeks maybe we'll film that

and show it I don't think anyone wants to see that including me to be honest we

are going in a moment so one last look at the live chat before we go Andrew

says is there any cure is that do you mean for dribbling is there a cure for

dribbling yes a giant bucket you can put a bucket underneath the person's mouth

and then they can just dribble into the bucket apparently the the boys who are

being rescued I saw something just I think six

six of the boys have now been rescued if I saw the message correctly six yes

according to Reuters six boys have now been rescued in Thailand thank you Alex

for letting us know and Ying there is used a of just to go back slightly yang

has used another example of a cap cap of the university tuition fee that's right

so whatever the fees are they won't go above a certain amount so they've put a

sort of a limit so there is a limit on the amount that people have to pay to go

to university so well done ying-ying hun so that's great yes some good news today
