in the uk but i hope where you are the sun is shining even if it is only shining in your

heart at least it is bright and sunny in the best possible place here we are yes we are

back together live and this is english addict coming to you now right now at this very moment

in time from the birthplace of the english language which just happens to be england

do you have your smile i hope you are smiling right now hi everybody this is mr duncan in

england how are you today are you okay i hope so are you happy i really hope you are feeling

happy today it is a lovely day we have a little bit of gray sky but also now and again occasionally

there is a little bit of sunshine coming through the clouds as well right behind me live from

england and yes i am a little bit late today although i i do have a good excuse it's not

a very pleasant excuse but it is an excuse it is a reason why i was slightly late a couple

of nights ago not last night but the night before mr steve and myself we went out for

a curry and let's just say my stomach is still recovering from the experience of having all

of those delicious spices and all that lovely food inside my tummy you know what i'm talking

about sometimes it can happen sometimes if you have a very heavy rich especially in my

case because i had the most delicious curry with lots and lots of butter that's all i'm

saying and lots of spices as well we might talk about that a little bit later on but

yes my name is duncan i talk about the english language you might say that i am an english

addict and i have a feeling that you might also be an english addict as well so thank

you very much for joining me today it is another live stream perhaps you've never seen this

before maybe it's your first time if it is please let me know please say mr duncan it's

my first time here on the live chat and i do get lots of requests for the time of my

live stream and i know that in different parts of the world there is a time difference so

the time to remember here is 2 pm uk time just in case you are watching the repeat of

this and you are desperate to catch the actual live broadcast 2 pm uk time all you have to

do is check the time difference between where you are and where i am and then there you

go you have the answer so that's when you can catch me on sunday which is now normally

i am with you on wednesday but can i just say i think it's a good opportunity right

now to say i will not be with you on so this wednesday the wednesday that is coming i will

not be here there will be no live stream because we have a special guest coming to stay this

week the person is arriving tomorrow so we are making some preparations including here

in the studio so this is going to be converted into a place where our guest is staying and

that's it that's the reason why i'm not with you on wednesday but don't worry we will be

back with you next sunday however we have a lot to talk about today some things that

you might want to chat about some things that you might want to give your opinion on and

of course we have mr steve here as well yes we've made it all the way to the end of another

weekend and another week in fact we only have another week of the month of august and then

we are in to september yes today it's sunday

i'm sure you don't want to know about that i'm pretty sure that you do not want to know

about the after effects of a wonderful night out with one of our friends the other night

can i just say something because i know in different parts of the world we are all now

in various stages of lockdown here in england lockdown has been almost completely eased

so here things have almost returned to normal and just to show that on friday night as i

just mentioned we went for a lovely meal in a place in the west midlands a place called

walsall with one of our good friends and we had the most amazing meal and also we were

surrounded by people other diners other people eating their food as well and it felt as if

things had gone back to normal there were no masks being worn there was nothing like

that even though i must admit they did they did bring a huge bottle of hand sanitizer

to the table the biggest bottle of hand sanitizer that i've ever seen so you can keep your hands

nice and clean that's the only thing that told us that we were still ever so slightly

still having certain precautions because of coronavirus but it was very strange and everyone

in there were all of the people were polite and i get the feeling that a lot of people

feel maybe liberated or relieved that life has returned to normal albeit with a few provisions

so there are some things that we still have to do for example if we if we go into the

shops now we still have to wear our masks and if you go into a place where there are

many many people you have to wear a mask and of course nowadays uh here in england especially

a lot of people now have been double vaccinated so that is probably one of the reasons why

everything has been relaxed quite a lot here in england so it was a very interesting experience

on friday night going out and sitting in a restaurant full of people none of whom were

wearing masks very strange including us so in a place where you are eating you don't

actually have to put a mask on very strange yes very interesting situation and it was

amazing how how serene and pleasant the atmosphere was in the restaurant so i do get the feeling

that a lot of people off are experiencing i don't know what the emotion is i suppose

it's a little bit like being in the house for a long time and then you can suddenly

go out and run around and have freedom it must be a little bit like that it must be

like coming out of prison and then suddenly finding yourself back amongst the population

so it's a very interesting experience and a lovely meal as well so here we are then

mr duncan what have you seen the news about afghanistan it might be a good theme for us

to study well i suppose it depends on what point of view you have so some people have

a certain opinion about what is happening there and other people have another opinion

so i think it's more about opinions than an actual subject to be honest and i suppose

the subject we might refer to could be history i suppose the history of a certain place especially

when things change or maybe things change dramatically as they are at the moment in

certain parts of the world but it is a good suggestion i like it i don't know why my finger

is very sticky i don't know why my finger is sticky but it's making it very hard to

joining already thank you very much so as i said we have mr steve we have some subjects

today we are talking about holding a grudge another subject that we are going to talk

about is money now when i say money i don't mean money in general i mean a certain type

of money money that you can hold money that you can use and spend in the shop physically

so quite often we will describe that type of money the money that you can hold the money

that you can put in your wallet we describe that as physical money it is money you can

touch and hold but of course since coronavirus came along a lot of shops a lot of businesses

have been very reluctant they have been reluctant to actually take money physically so quite

a lot of shops now and that includes here in england a lot of shops do not want to take

cash physical cash they would prefer it if you paid with your payment card maybe a debit

card or a credit card and of course nowadays it is possible to pay for something without

touching the machine or anything you can just move your card next to the machine and it

will do it automatically and of course a lot of people nowadays also can pay their bills

in the shop with their phone so a lot of people use their phone in their fingerprint to identify

themselves when they are paying for something so is it happening where you are what about

physical cash so that means coins and notes things that you can hold in your hand some

people prefer to have money that they can hold they like to have it because it feels

like it has more value it is very strange nowadays especially when you get paid so maybe

you work for a company where where your your salary is paid straight into your bank account

and that is very common nowadays it's been common for maybe the past 30 years so i remember

many years ago way back in the 1990s i also used to get paid through through my bank account

so i never actually saw cash and that's going back maybe 30 years so it does happen it did

happen many years ago and it's happening more and more so what i think is happening now

you see because lots of people don't want to touch cash money because you don't know

where it's been you don't know where the person holding the money has been they might have

all sorts of germs and bugs so people have become more aware of physical cash and many

shops now are reluctant they don't want to take physical money which of course has had

a very strange side effect and the strange effect is that fewer and fewer people are

now using physical money even though it still exists i mean um one of the things that's

just happened here in the uk we've just introduced a new note the 50 pound note has been changed

and now there is a new person a new historical figure on the 50-pound note the only problem

is very few people ever see 50 pound notes i can't remember the last time i saw a 50-pound

note i can't i really i literally can't it must be ma it must be many many years since

i last saw a 50 pound note so very few people ever get to hold a 50-pound note even though

they do exist so it's interesting that physical cash is becoming less and less you see less

cash you see less real money around it is all done electronically so we'll talk about

that a little bit later on with you as well there are many ways of paying for things in

your everyday life alessandra is here hello to you adele says pix is an online pay without

the card only with a numbered person so maybe you enter a number on the machine a pin number

yes i think that is that is quite common nowadays i would imagine that the card the card payment

card debit card or maybe a credit card i think that is very common now you always see people

just so they don't even have to put the card into the machine you just wave the card around

and it takes the payment even though there is a limit i think the limit here is 40 i

think it's 40 pounds so you can't have contactless you can't have a contactless payment of more

than 40 pounds for obvious reasons in case your your card is stolen that is the reason

why mr steve will be here i thought we would do something slightly different today i did

have a couple of requests asking about my my coffee break do you remember when we used

to have a coffee break well i thought it would be interesting to have a look at one of my

coffee breaks and the way in which i enjoy my coffee when i'm feeling a little thirsty

and also a little tired as well there is one thing that coffee is good for and that is

to pick you up when you are feeling lethargic maybe you've lost your energy maybe you need

a little bit of energy to get you going in the morning quite often people will turn and

they will go into the kitchen and they will make a cup of coffee and then after this yes

mr steve will be here live in the studio you know i always like to think of myself as a

very helpful person after all i do like helping you with your english i also like to help

people save money i'm going to do that right now here in my magic kitchen yes this is where

much of the magic happens when it comes to food because i love eating food and i also

like drinking coffee as well there is nothing worse than going to a very expensive coffee

shop and you have to stand there for ages while they serve you it takes such a long

time and sometimes the coffee is cold by the time you get it and the worst thing of all

is that the coffee costs a lot of money it's very very expensive to go to a coffee shop

and have one of those skinny lattes or espresso it's very expensive if you go to london can

you believe it in london a cup of coffee can cost as much as eight or nine pounds for one

yes one cup of coffee today i'm going to show you how to make your very own barista style

coffee and it will only cost you a few pennies yes it's true here we go we have everything

we need right here first of all we have the kettle so i'm going to boil some water first

of all in the kettle

the kettle will boil and i will also show you what else i have here so here is my new

sachet of coffee i don't know about you but i love opening a new sachet of coffee i really

do i love the smell the the aroma that you get when you open a fresh container of coffee

so that's what i'm going to do first of all i'm going to open this sachet that's a great

word sachet the sachet is a type of container quite often made of paper or plastic

they are normally soft they are normally very flexible so this is a sachet of coffee so

now i'm going to open the sachet and oh oh my goodness oh that is amazing there is nothing

like the smell the aroma of a freshly opened container of coffee i must admit do you want

to sniff there we go have a little smell of that it is absolutely delicious oh i can see

why coffee can be very addictive because it smells so amazing so i need to first of all

refill this container so i'm going to refill this container

there we go so now i have refilled this container and first of all i will put some coffee in

the cups and i'm going to show you how to make a very expensive cup of coffee for just

a few pennies ooh mr duncan we are very intrigued we are very interested in what you are going

to show us so first of all i will put some coffee in mr steve's cup because i'm making

a cup of coffee for not only myself but also for mr steve as well because he's very thirsty

and i will also put one teaspoon of coffee just one teaspoon in my cup as well so that's

the first stage

then i will put a little bit of sugar in each cup now mr steve likes a little bit of sugar

in his coffee so i will put a little bit of coffee a little bit of sugar rather into mr

steve's coffee and i will put in my coffee i have two teaspoons i know i'm very naughty

a lot of people are going to say mr duncan you shouldn't have so much sugar in your coffee

so that's that now here comes the very interesting part this is how you can create your own special

cup of coffee so i will put some milk now into each cup

and the reason why i'm putting the milk in first there is a very special reason for it

and the reason is as the sun comes out the reason is i'm going to do something very special

with the milk and the coffee that are in these cups so watch what happens next

in fact i will put a little bit more milk in just a little bit more not too much and

i will show you my special little tool this is the device that i use for making my expensive

coffee

can you see it it is a little frothing machine so this will help the milk to become very

frothy and what you have to actually do is put the hot water into the cups so you put

the hot water into the cups don't forget the water has to be very hot preferably boiling

so it's better if the actual water is boiling at the time and what you want to do you want

to heat the milk as quickly as possible so if you put the boiling water straight onto

the milk and coffee it will create a very special style of coffee you will have your

very own cappuccino and it won't cost you much money it's true so here we go i will

boil the water again it's very important that the water is boiling

so it's very important that the water is boiling

we'll just make sure that it's really really really really hot okay and now very quickly

we will pour the boiling water onto the coffee

and at the same time you will use your little machine to froth the coffee there we go so

now i am making the coffee all frothy oh so there it is i will do that for a few moments

and look look what we have here yes it's incredible

look at that so now we have a very expensive style of coffee so this now looks just like

the sort of coffee that you would get in a very expensive coffee shop in london or italy

so there we go a lovely frothy coffee and now i will do mine so this is mr steve's and

now i will do mine and don't forget it's very important that the water is very very hot

so you make the water as hot as possible like this

another good thing you can do you can also pour the water from a great height so if you

pour the water from very high up it creates even more friction in the milk so i will show

you what i mean i will show you what i mean by that here we go again don't forget you

need this device as well a little coffee frother right let's go

and there you have it look at that that is absolutely perfect

so if you went to a coffee shop if you ordered this at a coffee shop this would cost you

about five or six pounds or maybe even eight or nine pounds if you bought this in london

and here i am in my kitchen making a very expensive cup of coffee for just a few pence

isn't that amazing

and there it is

done and done so let me just show you so now we have two cups of very expensive coffee

so if you went to a coffee shop this would cost you about five or six pounds and here

i am in my kitchen making it for just a few pennies and those few pennies of course relate

to the electricity that i used to boil the water and that's it

so i will take this cup of coffee up to mr steve and you will rejoin me live in the studio

because it is a sunday afternoon and this is live english

oh look at that doesn't that look delicious i i never understand why coffee is so expensive

when you go into a restaurant or a cafe i will never understand it i don't think i ever

hello he is looking all clean and bright he is mr steve hello mr duncan how are you and

how are you i'm okay question mark i'm okay mr steve is here we had a busy week we've

been doing lots of things in preparation we have a special guest of honor coming this

week to stay with us for three or four days i'm exhausted exhausted because obviously

uh my mother hasn't been for two years and we haven't cleaned the house in that entire

time for the whole two years because we only clean the house when my mother comes to visit

that's it otherwise we don't bother and we don't bother we've decorated every room we've

cleaned every carpet we've painted the outside of the house i've hovered everywhere i mean

if she's not happy then you know tough yes but she will find the slightest speck of dust

oh look you haven't cleaned here i'm joking she's not like that steve's mother steve's

mother will go around the house and she will run her fingers uh over everything do you

do you know someone like that who does that they they go around and they put their finger

on top of things and move it across to find out if there is any dust take great delight

in finding a little bit that you missed in fact i might leave a bit deliberately to see

if she can find it well i was going to just leave it completely just to see what happens

anyway it is quite we're joking really um but it is quite good isn't it mr duncan and

you out there when somebody's coming to visit yes it sort of spurs you on it gives you the

incentive to to do jobs in the house and things that you've been putting off for a long time

yes like you know cleaning the the poo off the living room floor that sort of thing no

i'm only joking but it does doesn't it when when someone's coming to visit and you've

got a few weeks oh yes i'll just decorate that little bit i'll just clean that i'll

do this i'll do that tidy up get rid of all those magazines that are everywhere lying

around can i just say that there is no poo on our carpet not yet anyway it might be by

the end of the week but we will see what happens there oh willian says that he's got a polo

show it's a polo shirt similar to mine okay i can't speak properly this afternoon uh we

were talking about you cleaning by the way steve you were cleaning yesterday and and

i bone i managed to film you cleaning let's have a look at mr steve cleaning and you will

not believe what mr steve does what you do when you are cleaning around the house this

might be the strangest thing you've ever seen take a take a look at this this is so weird

so here is mr steve doing the vacuuming he is cleaning the floors and for some reason

mr steve does not like the sound of the vacuum cleaner he doesn't like it at all so when

he's doing it he wears his ear defenders so the loud noise of the vacuum cleaner does

not startle him he is very easily triggered

oh i think he's trying to suck me huh i hate the sound i i i'm very sensitive to noise

i don't know what it is you are i always was even as a baby uh so even when i'm hoovering

or vacuuming i always put headphones on i'm not listening to music i just hate the noise

i just hate the noise of it so i can just sort of blissfully clean and vacuum the house

uh and i can't hear anything because i've got the year defenders on you know what the

weird thing is though if i have to talk to steve i can't i so i'm shouting i'll say mr

steve steve steve steve steve and then he and then he jumps behind me and gives me a

shock well i just try to get your attention because you've got your stupid ear defenders

on yeah that's just me i do the same when i'm uh when i'm you know you see me in the

garden don't you with those ear defenders yes but that but they're noisy things well

there's that our vacuum cleaner is noisy i don't think it's that if it's over 90 decibels

it could calm your hearing and i don't want to be deaf when i get older i'm not sure about

that i wonder if that is straight does anybody else wear ear defenders no when they're vacuuming

let's have a look no one does you might be the only person on the planet does anyone

else do it i'm not listening to music to zika i'm not i'm actually they're just ear defenders

yes they're just keeping the noise out away from mr steve's sensitive ears because he

gets very triggered you see any sudden sounds or movements things that come nearby maybe

a little wasp will buzz around oh talking of wasps

we we have found a wasps nest outside my studio window would you like to have a look and i

will tell you the story the sad story of the wasps so there they are just above my window

so that is the window just above my studio you can see the top of the window at the bottom

of the screen but there is a nest of wasps and there it is the hole where the wasps are

going in and out and they've been there for a while clearly and they're just above the

window and the thing is mr steve's mother is coming to stay so steve is really worried

that his mother might get stung by a wasp so i don't know how to tell you this i don't

know how to break this news to you but can i just say that this is not my decision this

is mr steve's decision steve tomorrow is having a man come to our house to kill those wasps

yes well you must mr duncan you can't have wasps nests terrible in your house because

somebody might get stung and if they're allergic to the the beast the wasp sting you they could

die but that is a rare occurrence but you know the other thing is that will be in the

ceiling that will be in the ceiling space somewhere yes above the ceiling a wasp's nest

is not a good idea because they get very wet and damp and uh they can apparently get very

there's a lot of moisture in a in a wasp nest and it can cause your ceiling to get weak

yes and then the the ceiling can collapse if it's just above your ceiling and then you

end up with a roommate with a room full of wasps yes i i i can see your point but i'm

not sure if i if i agree i'm not sure if i agree well they're gone with killing them

uh what kind of vacuum cleaner says stefano what kind of vacuum cleaner is that oh okay

yeah okay well we'll answer that afterwards there we go we're looking at the wasps at

the moment lots of them yeah so tomorrow but tomorrow we have an exterminator coming and

he's going to kill these wasps he's going to destroy this lovely little wasp nest that

i wanted to keep i said i don't want them to be killed i want to keep them i i've even

named them they've all got names now and mr steve is going to to to get a guy to come

here tomorrow and kill them which i don't i don't like i think that's very sad to be

honest yes uh umberto that they're not bees they're wasps they're not beings what might

you do do do uh can you get honey from wasps i've never heard of it you don't know uh i

don't think wasps provide anything yes so yes they are wasps and we we really you know

we don't want those and the other thing is they're right above the window that my in

in duncan studio where my mother will be sleeping yes so if she was to open the window i've

been training you should fly in they'd get caught caught up in her bouffant hairstyle

okay and maybe they'd build a nest in my mother's hair they might do but anyway lots of people

commenting about your oh i forgot to uh what kind of vacuum cleaner it's a sibo s-e-b-o

yes it's a very unusual brand i've always had a sibo uh i broke the last one by trying

to suck up dust from a building but we it was um what plaster dust in the carpets and

it doesn't like the dust from plaster it was what it was when i was in china and steve

decided to have the house that we used to live in he had it smashed to pieces by builders

and then he decided to use the lovely vacuum cleaner to suck all of the debris from the

building work and it destroyed the vacuum cleaner tomex says hello tomic tomex says

that he uses ear defenders when he's vacuuming no so you know i'm not the only person that

does that so what about when you do the washing up if you do the washing up steve you're washing

the dishes do you put little armbands on inflatable armbands in case you fall into the water and

and you're sound mr duncan sound so even the sound of a plate clanking in in a bowl will

annoy me uh hello skye skye asks are you a couple a couple of what we are a couple of

something we are a couple of something lots of people talking about your coffee by the

way you well yes comments about your coffee making yes uh well well let's just well is

it coffee making uh because zuzika says where is the coffee machine well you don't you don't

to be honest with you i'm going to be honest with you there are coffee machines very expensive

coffee machines that are available and a lot of people like to have them in their kitchen

just so they can show off to their friends when they come around oh hello would you like

a fresh cup of coffee from my machine it cost me 2 000 pounds look at me but the thing is

those machines take such a long time to make the coffee it's about 10 minutes and it comes

out lukewarm and you don't get very much of it they're good for espressos i think that's

about it which a lot of people have said we've got lots of people watching from italy today

because all cecilia amberto uh are saying that what we should try we should come to

rome says cecilia for a good expresso yes uh and umbrerto says i like a strong black

italian so does steve coffee coffee steve likes a straw steve likes a strong black italian

coffee or any strong black yeah saturino says that um english coffee is is is like brown

hot water to her well it's not i mean let's face it it's not a proper espresso is it but

it's it's near well but i've been to coffee shops and this is this is the point i'm trying

to make just because you have a coffee machine doesn't mean the coffee is going to be nice

because i've had some disgusting coffee when i've been around to people's houses and they

have this posh machine you put the beans in and then it takes ages and it makes lots of

noise

and it takes like eight minutes if he can't speak then uh belarusia wants a copy you're

right

belarusia uh hasn't had breakfast yet um it's amazing how early it is there so uh she's

dying for a cup of coffee and she does want to try our coffee by the way um so when we

come over to your neck of the woods uh you're part of the country then we'll try it you're

right have you recovered from that sort of seizure i was making what you were having

i was making the sound of a coffee machine and unfortunately one of the little beans

got stuck in my throat adele says we've got to have what about brazilian coffee well that

would be nice i would like to try coffee all over the world obviously yes um so hopefully

well we've had lots of invitations haven't we to go to various parts of the world by

our wonderful viewers but what i was going to say the point i'm trying to say is just

because you make it in a machine doesn't mean the coffee is going to be nice because we

went to someone's house someone who lived near us they don't anymore and we went there

and she had this wonderful coffee machine she was saying oh my coffee machine it's very

expensive and wonderful but it took ages to make the coffee and then when we had it it

was almost cold it was one of the worst cups of coffee i've ever had but this machine that

she was making it in was was really expensive so that's the reason why i make my coffee

very simply very it's a very simply made cup of coffee it is nice but it is nice well it

does the trick it's got caffeine it perks me up makes me feel lively now somebody asked

what nissa says what does frothy mean oh well it's roughy if something is frothy it means

it has lots of bubbles normally on the surface so maybe on the surface of something there

are lots of small bubbles foamy quite often you will see foam are on top of coffee cappuccino

normally has lots of foam on top also when the sea comes in when the tide comes in sometimes

you will see lots of foam on the water froth as as the sea moves as the the waves there's

another there's another meaning if something is frothy uh if a person you can describe

a person as frothy they're sort of lively effervescent you can have a frothy conversation

yes you can be used as a what would you what would you lively yeah that's it sort of frothy

oh you're a bit frothy today yeah you could say imagine if you're you're doing your washing

in the washing machine and you put too much powder in there and then the foam will stir

up as the cloves are washing and then the foam will start to come out the top we can

say that that is froth so the foam the the white foam can also be described as froth

as well it's all coming out of the washing machine yes lots of people just it's italian

coffee seems to be the one that everyone is talking about um so yes we'll have to go we'll

have to go uh but colombian and cuban coffee says john uh is also the best and uh john

has asked if i would talk about my school days uh not today i don't think we've got

nothing not on mr duncan's agenda today mr steve's very eventful i'm just whenever steve

mentions his time at school i always see two things one of them is steve being chased around

the school by all the bullies because it's very similar to me that's what happened to

me i was bullied a lot at school but then some people say that i i have the sort of

face that looks like it needs bullying dominic says that i don't pronounce the word expresso

correctly no you don't how do you pronounce it then expresso i can't roll my express oh

i can do it expresso that's it but you don't have to shout well well we say espresso in

the uk it might be pronounced differently in italy which of course is quick a quick

quick cup of coffee so thanks for that criticism

although he does say that the chances of getting a proper or legitimate cup of coffee from

a [ __ ] from a machine is more likely than pouring boiling water into instant coffee

i mean just you know we're just being constantly criticized aren't we me for my pronunciation

i'm using your coffee i'm used to it uh well we're used to it from tomic that's good but

but the thing is i i don't think any shop any coffee shop can ever justify when i say

justify it means they can defend the reason why they charge so much money for a cup of

coffee some places if you go to london 10 pounds because they're barristers yes but

it's just still coffee it's the same coffee it's just coffee it's crushed up coffee beans

well they've got to eat they've got to they've got to pay the rent on the on the on the shop

they've got to buy the machines employ the staff pay taxes pay wages it's obviously not

going to be 10 pence a cup is it well no well i wouldn't expect that either but maybe maybe

two pounds fifty i think i think the most i would pay for a cup of coffee reasonably

would be around two pounds fifty i think that's a reasonable price to pay for a cup of coffee

but if you go to london it's like 8 pounds 10 pounds for a cup of coffee lewis says um

the best coffee that he tasted was in venice a long time ago well yeah we'll have to go

there as well but we were watching something about venice the other night because a lot

of the big ships are now being told that they can't come they can't dock because of all

of the the the pollution and also the fact that it's disturbing the water as well so

when these big ships come they they they empty all of their passengers thousands of people

are running around and and disturbing the peace of venice so yes i think i i think there's

a lot of these big ships have now been banned well one crashed in crashed somewhere didn't

they enter into the port or something yeah a while ago which caused a few problems um

yes nissa says hello nissa that uh obviously in india they like tea indian tea and assam

of course is and we love assam tea because it's very strong and i do like indian tea

because they make it with sort of cardamom and spices and milk it's quite milky from

what i remember and full of flavor but with assam tea yes i do right well that's strong

i mean our tea can be a bit weak um but indian tea is strong just like a black italian a

coffee which is also strong and powerful and uh sexy even okay i think you know i can see

myself now sitting on the lovely italian riviera having a nice cup of coffee the italian riviera

okay i'm sure that exists but where exactly would that be which place i'm not an expert

in geography oh i see so you love italy so much you can't name one place pizza pizza

okay there we go i don't think that's on the riviera but there you go

right what are we talking about today mr duncan moving on moving on i was going to say tuscany

tuscany are you sure it is sure it is the most it is a wonderful i've always wanted

to go to tuscany i i maybe rent an apartment there and maybe i could take up a new artistic

endeavor like painting i could find a muse have you ever had a muse mr steele sort of

thinking amusing thinking if you know that the thing that they were muse in art oh in

art is yes well that's what i'm talking about clearly not listening to a word i'm saying

i never listen to you in in art if you are a painter or a sculptor maybe something you

are deeply interested in something that captures your imagination and you want to recreate

it in your artistic interpretation such as a sculpture or maybe a painting or drawing

that person or that thing becomes your muse

uh yes does the coffee disturb your sleep says stefan well it can do because uh well

they actually recommend they who doctors okay scientists people in the know baristas uh

not baristas because they would want you to drink drink coffee at all times so they if

you don't want disturbed sleep you shouldn't drink coffee you know six hours before going

to bed okay that's what they say uh some people drink it at night i know they do i know they

do some people have a cup of coffee after their meal at night i wouldn't sleep uh i

don't believe that because i'm very sensitive as you know sensitive to sound sensitive to

everything caffeine you know i only have to sniff coffee and i'd come alive from the the

caffeine fumes sometimes two alive actually i can get heart palpitations from too many

cups of coffee i remember the first time i ever had a proper cup of coffee a proper one

a proper proper cup of coffee in uh you know barista a camera from a proper coffee machine

um because we didn't really have them in the uk sort of star books and places like that

they they didn't really come into us from 1990s we didn't have coffee before we needed

to have lots of coffee shops i think coffee existed coffee existed but all you got was

instant coffee in a plastic cup in the uk that was what you commonly got and then all

these coffee shops came in and i remember the first time i had one that's true well

when we grew up there were no coffee shops cafes yes but i'm talking about proper coffee

from a machine but there used to be there's a lovely place in stafford where i was raised

and that had the most amazing coffee i don't think so but it had a machine yeah but you

know they were they're everywhere now but they weren't when we grew up in the 1970s

and 80s this was yeah but not every town had them mr duncan you're being annoying uh we

didn't have starbucks and nero's and what's that other common one costa costa we didn't

have any of those they all sort of came in for them sort of well from the 2000s onwards

really mainly i mean they're everywhere now uh and i i remember the first time i had a

cup of coffee from one of these shops i was high as a kite the caffeine was so strong

it was literally making me hyperactive which is what i need most of what what you need

is the opposite you need you need one of those tranquilizers in a dart fired into your neck

to calm you down a bit i do when i'm on live with mr duncan hey steve um we have the sentence

game coming up later on after popular demand from from everyone out there everyone wanted

the sentence game back so it will be back we're also talking i went to the sentence

game but they didn't want flags of the world it's what we established last week yes the

one the one thing we learned what a lot the one thing we learned last week was flags of

the world not popular sentence game popular with some people the people that can do it

it's popular with them if you can do something normally it's more popular yes ah right yeah

stefano says uh can't drink coffee in the afternoon to preserve my sleep yes exactly

yes don't have it too late actually what they say is if you if you're tired if you come

home from work and you're tired and you want a little sleep have a cup of coffee and then

have half an hour sleep and when you wake up the coffee would have gone the caffeine

will be you you'll wake up lively i've never tried it but apparently that is the case some

people watch this they watch our live stream to become engaged and lively apparently although

i'm sure some people watch it so they can go to sleep as well i'm pretty sure of that

we have some interesting subjects today by the way one good we are looking at a simple

word but it's one that i think has a big a big meaning in everyday life and we are talking

about holding a grudge i think that's a great word by that way grudge i i think in english

sometimes a word will sound exactly like the thing it is describing and i think this is

a great example grudge so even when you say it your face looks like the emotion grudge

i have a grudge so if you hold a grudge well first of all let's look at the word shall

we well the word grudge means bitterness or resentment so maybe a person has done something

to you and you are refusing to forgive them maybe someone has beaten you in a competition

or maybe they have something that you don't you might feel bitterness oh yes maybe maybe

somebody on the live stream whose name begins with tea maybe i feel bitter and have a grudge

and resentment so grudge means bitterness resentment and it's normally something you

feel towards another person to feel bitterness towards someone is a grudge so we say that

you are holding a grudge grudge is a great word and it describes a certain type of emotion

that you might feel for example resent felt after an unpleasant experience so something

that you do or maybe a place that you go to maybe you have a terrible experience maybe

something happens that affects you negatively you might afterwards get or hold a grudge

like we do against that shop our local shop yes the local shop that we went to because

we we went to it all the time and then the owner's son came out the son of the owner

came out and he criticized us and he he made us look stupid in front of everyone yes in

the car park accusing us of parking too long in his parking space but we were customers

and regular customers so what did we do we we we just boycotted the shop and we haven't

been there since and we hold a grudge so which will be there till my dying day so now we

hold a grudge against the nissa the nissa shop the nissa convenience store in much wenlock

we now have a grudge we will never shop there again never once somebody has crossed me mr

duncan once they cross me that's it they're out forever i'm not sure about that but sometimes

i don't think you do hold grudges see i don't think you are good at that i think you do

over time you you start to you start you mellow now i on the other hand i am the king of grudge

i never forget and i never forgive it is very rare for me to forgive anyone who's true who

who does anything against me especially if it's done spitefully if it's done in with

hate i'm i'm not a forgiving person i will be honest with you sometimes i will give chances

if if maybe the thing in question is accidental but i quite often i am i will hold my grudge

and sometimes that grudge will last forever yes that is true you wouldn't think mr duncan

was a person that held a grudge for a long time but it's true he does apparently there's

a film called the grudge okay a horror film um so no i didn't know that so yes right you

can have a grudge match yes i'm i'm going to look at these things look at that i'm jumping

the gun i'm getting a head to be to be unwilling to forgive someone is a good definition of

grudge you hold something against another person as i said earlier something they've

done maybe they've achieved something that you wish you had achieved yes iron man says

the grudge like holly field has a grudge on mike tyson hmm there we go yes well when you

when you think about certain types of competitive sport we often use the word grudge quite often

we will use the word grudge to describe that that feeling so we can say that a person carries

a grudge so to carry a grudge means you hold it you hold on to it it's a little bit like

having an emotion that you can't get rid of you can't remove it it is something that stays

there in your mind and also in your heart so it is a very powerful emotion a little

bit like jealousy i think jealousy is very similar to that so jealousy is something it's

very hard to get rid of it's very hard to hold back and i think having a grudge is is

also very similar to hold or bear a grudge towards someone hmm steve regrets yes that's

it it's somebody somebody's done you wrong or done something to make you maybe embarrass

you or maybe been unfair to you in some way that you feel slighted by it you feel annoyed

by it and that person doesn't apologize and uh i think we've got a wasp or we got a wasp

mr duncan a wasp well all i can say is hello wasp make the most of your life because tomorrow

mr steve is going to have you killed yes so if you want to sting him now this is the guy

that's going to kill you tomorrow thanks for telling the wasp come on over here miss mr

wasp he's the guy sting him sting him right there get it out quick sting him on his head

wasp yes it's not going to do wasps will only sting if they are attacked so as long as you

don't attack them unless it thinks we're attacking it yes well that's why i told that wasp then

i told it that you are the one who's ordered the execution of that nest see what could

happen now is that wasp we might forget about that wasp not me it's him we might forget

about the wasp sting him and then it uh secretes itself somewhere okay because it's exhausted

trying to get out and then mother comes there we go i bet everybody saw that then mother's

sleeping here and the wasp wakes up and comes alive and crawls all over and stings her which

we don't want but why can't i get rid of it for you no it's all right it's fine i've got

windows open in here that eventually the wasp will fly towards the window and it will fly

away and it will live for about another 18 hours but then thanks to mr steve they will

all be killed tomorrow well you know too dangerous so to hold and bear a grudge towards someone

so there might be some wasps living nearby who might bear a grudge towards mr steve that's

why by having their friends and relatives murdered that's why i've got to kill them

all there can't be any any left because they will then bear a grudge and come after me

you know you're starting to sound like somebody else this is starting to turn into something

far more sinister than just getting rid of well it's like in those films isn't it where

somebody kills a member of somebody's family yeah uh but in fact they don't kill all of

them so there's always somebody left to get revenge um yeah the answer is you've got to

kill all of them okay otherwise there'll be somebody left but mind you sort of uh that

has been the case in history isn't it where evil horrible dictator type leaders will wipe

out whole areas villages all that sort of thing so that there's nobody left to come

and get revenge on them later i'm going to guess that steve hasn't read the news recently

that's it's going on all around the world i know but it never stops does it anyway we're

talking about having a grudge holding a grudge here's another interesting word steve rudge

beatrice makes a good point well i'll read that out in a minute yes begrudge be great

if you begrudge someone or something you envy them yes or resent them that's different isn't

it so again it's slightly different but you begrudge some someone you feel the emotion

of envy or resentment towards someone so i like that one maybe they become successful

in something yeah and you're jealous of it so you've got a friend or a relative and uh

they become famous or they start a business and make millions of pounds and you but you

you don't like that you feel jealous you begrudge them their success yes what i was saying earlier

about me though i i will hold grudges against people who've who've done me harm intentionally

or people who've done things because they they they want to hurt me so i don't just

do it with everyone but i do if a person has been very mean or mean-spirited or maybe they've

done something big big you know for various reasons for hatred because they're they're

a hateful person so yes i will i will hold grudges but normally i have a very good reason

for doing it beatrice can i make do you want to carry on can i make a comment no beatrice

and flower make make a a very good point similar point holding a grudge is not healthy to keep

a grudge for a long time can bring on illness or cancer as beatrice says yes well i mean

they do know that um you know medical science has proved that if you you know if you're

all the time thinking of holding grudges or want revenge and things like that it can be

a negative can be have a negative impact on your health stress which can cause illness

is a similar thing i don't i don't feel stressed because of it but i do make sure that i don't

suffer the same fate again so from my point of view it is more about protection you're

protecting yourself i suppose yes i think i think it is actually it's probably an evolutionary

thing isn't it because if you hold a grudge that's an emotion because that you are then

remembering that that person is a bad person they could be a bad person

so in a way when you see them you will have that emotion you will never trust them so

it's your body telling you you know don't get caught out twice yes because that person

might might do you wrong again so in fact it's a bit of a warning to you isn't it in

a way that certain people yes you don't want to be associated you stay away from things

that might cause you harm two rivals two people who are often battling each other can hold

grudges and we had a good example earlier with boxing so you we often hear the the phrase

grudge match between two boxers who really don't like each other so they go into the

ring and they punch and hit each other in the ring lewis says uh well flower says it

life's too short you should let it go peacefully and lewis makes a similar point uh lewis is

the kind of person that can have a big argument a hot argument with someone and then over

time the feeling of the being angry goes i don't keep rancor that's a good that's a good

word yes rancor encore is a very similar word rancor yes and but yes i wish i was that type

of person i'm the type of person that won't react when someone's nasty to me unless it's

atomic i'll always react then and uh and i won't react at the time and then i'll go away

and then i'll have all these conversations going over in my head about what i wanted

to say to them you know i and in fact you end up making up whole scenarios and i think

it's your your brain just trying to cope with it um you know if someone's does something

to you on the road that you don't like you know i go through all these scenarios of what

i'd say to women but you are a person who sometimes if you are slighted by someone if

someone does something to you you you will often think at the time i wish i had done

that to them i wish i had done that but but you didn't and then later you you think oh

you you play it's almost like watching a movie in your head you will play it back but this

time it is your version and what you wish you had done i think it is healthy to have

an argument with somebody at the time uh get it out of the way have the argument and then

forgive and forget because i think if you don't have that argument if that argument

isn't resolved if that conversation isn't resolved and it's just going on in your mind

it causes stress yeah i suffer from that yes very much very much yes that uh so holding

a grudge that the word grudge derives from french did you know that from the french word

grouch so the word grouch is a person who who might be irritable or grumpy so that's

where grudge comes from right although the the original definition that we don't actually

know where it came from originally but that is is is its nearest definition somebody said

earlier where is sergio on today well i haven't seen sergio i have not seen sergio today and

i don't think we have because all that talk of coffee we know sergio would have said forget

coffee just have vodka yes so the fact that i didn't see that comment leads me to believe

that sergio is not here today that is one thing if you want to be if you want to actually

rest or sleep or or be in a place where you can relax then i suppose a little bit of vodka

might help you to get there synonyms of grudge by the way include envy bitterness ill will

resent you might also have a chip on your shoulder which i love i love that expression

it's a great expression so you walk around in your life feeling bitter towards other

people you you have a chip on your shoulder you often feel as if everyone around you is

is against you or maybe everyone is is having a better life or maybe they are treated more

fairly you can have a chip on your shoulder i i think that's an interesting expression

uh yes belarusia says sometimes holding a grudge has a connection related to self-esteem

yes i think you could be right yes um well how could she how could she do this to me

yes it's a yes it is if you can't maybe i've got self-esteem problems mr tonka i think

that's very obvious you you have many self problems all prefixed with the word self self

and whatever whatever psychological term you want to use really sharon says we need a magnetic

insect screen to stop the wasps coming in that is a great idea you know what you know

what

that is the most amazing idea in fact there are things you can buy that are that roll

up they roll up and you just unroll them and you stick them across the frame of your window

and they're like a fine net and they stop the insects from coming in they have them

in lots of countries they have them uh can i just say that that is brilliant you know

i might actually do that because that is a problem we have in this studio we can't open

the windows because of flies and all sorts of insects coming in thank you i'm going to

make a note of that i'm going to do that i'm going to get something to put on the window

lots of countries particularly hot countries that want to keep the insects out will have

uh mesh screens on the doors as well so you can have the door open to let the air in but

the insects don't come in yeah i'm gonna do that i'm going to look for something to put

over my windows so i can have my windows open on a hot day and of course we have the studio

lights as well which are a little hot when they are on so a grudge can also be a complaint

about something so if you go to a restaurant you might have a grudge you might feel as

if the food wasn't good enough or the service wasn't good enough so you can develop a grudge

when you have a complaint about something so that's also interesting you don't often

hear people talk about grudge in that sense but actually a complaint or a disagreement

or maybe another word is gripe i like that word if you have a gripe it means you have

a complaint about something you feel something wasn't good enough for me i now have a grudge

well i hope nobody's got a gripe about today's live lesson i hope not or holding grudges

because we don't answer all of their questions are from the live stream finally steve the

word begrudgingly so it's describing the actual action you are doing something in a certain

way the word begrudgingly relates to doing something reluctantly or with bitterness so

you don't really want to do it but you have to do it so you do it begrudgingly yes perhaps

you're in a contest and maybe the person who comes second has to give the prize to the

person who comes first so you give the prize but you you don't really want to give it to

them you give it to them congratulations begrudgingly yes that's often seen for example if somebody

asks you to do something say a friend says oh can you pick me up and uh give me a lift

to work but you don't want to do it because it's a bit out of your way you want to drive

a couple of miles out of the way too far and you do it but you don't want to do it and

it's obvious you don't want to do it in your attitude and your behavior someone would say

oh you you've done that but you've done it begrudgingly you've helped somebody that person

have a lift to work but you didn't want to help them uh so you you you sort of you'd

have an expression on your face or get in didn't really want to help you so you do it

begrudgingly the one thing i do i do agree with is having a grudge can can also be destructive

it can have a negative effect on your life but i i don't have grudges against everyone

around me but only people who've really done something and they've done it intentionally

and i i think sometimes you you can't forgive but i think you can be too forgiving sometimes

i think you have to sometimes say that's it enough is enough no more i'm sorry you did

it once for me you did it twice you're still making a fool of me it won't happen again

so sometimes you do have to put a stop you just you have to say enough is enough well

flower says sometimes holding a grudge can be a good thing because it shows it's punishment

for the person that you know if that person has some feelings and uh you know is is a

response we've got two wasps in here now mr duncan okay two um so um yes somebody somebody

might it could be a punishment for them so it might it might actually modify their behavior

if they can see that you're you don't want to talk to them or you ignore them or you

don't you don't have meals with them anymore at the restaurant or the cafe maybe they they

might change their behavior their bad behavior and become you know better people we're going

to have to shut that window i think mr duncan you wanted to open well steve was complaining

that it was hot in here so i opened the windows and now we have wasps flying everywhere but

don't worry they will not be around much longer because steve is going to have them terminated

tomorrow well these two might have to be terminated uh earlier than the others just send them

out of the window don't worry about it steve even psychopaths deserve sympathy says belarusia

they can't avoid hurting people because they have a mental illness oh well that again that's

different yeah i mean although they do need locking up at the same time you know psychopath

is not the sort of person you want living next door have you seen mr johnson yeah he

he does he does occasionally murder people after after inviting them into his house are

you talking about the prime minister but he's really nice sorry who are you talking about

what do you mean who am i talking about well you just said mr johnson well mr johnson can

be anyone it's just a name that we use i see i thought you were talking about our prime

minister too no it's just a generic well quite often when we are relating a story to something

imaginary we we often use certain names and mr johnson is is is a common name that we

will just bring up not not the problems i didn't say it was you're the one that keeps

saying i know but i've never heard of that you see he said we need to explain that we're

not talking about boris johnson no we're talking about somebody no we're not talking okay well

that's that's my story just completely destroyed what i'm just saying you know i think we're

talking about boris johnson we're not well because we said mr johnson yes on the planet

yes you know how many millions of johnson's there are i know but that's a famous name

at the moment isn't it welcome yes here but not on the planet not on planet earth well

there are no our prime minister oh okay steve go on carry on with your story i can't it's

gone i'll call it call call him mr smith instead okay or mr blogs oh mr smith that could be

that could be maggie smith or maggie smith's husband you see what you're saying what you're

saying are you saying the actress maggie smith my husband is a psychopath mr duncan just

you can't really forgive them but that they should probably be be sort of sedated or locked

away so so i'm not saying we should be really really too forgiving iron man says wives uh

show a grudge to their husbands or yes yes that's right well you know if the husband's

done something the wife doesn't like she might show that she's holding a grudge against his

behavior maybe he went out uh and came back late and was drunk and she's wondering what

he got up to the wasp came down and said hello to you then and then went away again he's

the one if you want to sting this one he's the one that's having you executed tomorrow

okay there's there's there's one of them maybe it's coming to plead with me yeah ask me please

please don't kill all my brothers and sisters yes um well i'll say i'll say no for now because

then i won't get stoned so that is the subject holding a grudge we will not hold that grudge

any longer because we will move on one of the things i noticed recently steve

did you see the story about the new 50 pound note we have a new 50 pound note here in the

uk it's been replaced what am i going to do with all my old ones but what i was going

to say is you never see 50 pound notes i don't know why they even changed it because no one

ever sees them it's quite pointless in fact even though yes i know what you're going to

say oh mr duncan they put alan turing on the back of the 50-pound note who would know that

but no one but no one ever sees a pound note ever because we never see them i don't even

know what a 50 pound note looks like to be honest but it it brought me round to an interesting

subject about physical money physical cash as opposed to cryptocurrencies you mean well

as opposed no as opposed to anything that isn't real or physical so something you can

hold in your hand and maybe pass on to your loved one is it the end of physical cash because

coronavirus coronavirus came along steve so what was the first thing the first thing people

started doing well you weren't allowed to use physical cash in the shops because they

could be contaminated with the virus um so yes you could in a lot of shops you could

only use contactless card which we know is not real money anyway it's electronic money

uh i mean physical cash has been going out for some time hasn't it um and uh yes what

do you want me to say mr duncan

i mean people talk about physical cash but i think virtually all transactions are electronic

now anyway if you transfer money to somebody that's electronic there's very little physical

care i'm on about going to the local shop and buying buying a loaf of bread well yes

you can still use that i think the vast majority yeah so physical cash has been going so what

you're saying mr duncan is in a massive change of subject away from what we've just been

talking about i'm trying to get my brain into gear now from you switching from being uh

grudging to the end of physical cash why is that so hard to do ah it's just to change

a subject i'm not asking you to saw one of your languages a big subject mr dumb can we

it's a big subject because we can get into all sorts of things here well no value of

money all i'm talking about it's it's a very simple subject actually it's money you hold

in your hand so when you go into your wallet you pull out money but nowadays and certainly

because of coronavirus and covid lots of shops have refused or they have become more cautious

so they would rather most people use their card and especially these days because you

don't even have to touch anything you can just get your card and

you don't have to touch anything some people use their mobile phones some people use the

internet and pay for something in advance maybe a delivery maybe your shopping order

so anything like that and that's the reason why i'm making this an important question

is it the end of physical cash probably because it seems a long time since i handled hash

the the roof repairer what are they going to do well they're going to put their prices

up they will have to pay taxes to put their prices up because they'll then have to maybe

put it up by 20 or 30 percent uh because to account for the the tax they'll have to pay

but then i often suspect that they often say to you don't they build us oh um if you pay

me in cash you can get it cheaper but then how do i know that they haven't already put

the price up beforehand well yeah anyway so you think you're getting something cheaper

but maybe you're not because they've already you know they're trying to make as much out

that they haven't used physical cash for years anyway but just because it's of course more

convenient you don't have to carry cash with you uh and um what's in the west uh oh no

well of course yes this is why cryptocurrencies are becoming popular no i'm just let me say

something this is why i'm not promoting them cryptocurrencies are becoming popular because

they're seen as being outside government control yes so therefore people are quite keen to

use them so it's almost equivalent of having cash physical cash in a way because you can

you know interact with people pay for services without having to get the government involved

but of course the government aren't going to be very keen on that so i'm sure that they

and you were hacked into you wouldn't be compensated because they're not controlled in that way
