we are now into the month of May so May

has arrived just five days into May

how has the month been for you so far

has maybe in a good month so far for you

it has for me I have been taking it easy

over the past week I went over to see my

mother during the week I went over to

the place where I was raised

the town of Stafford now many people

keep asking mr. Duncan we never ever see

where you used to live where you were

raised as a child can you please show us

some photographs of your hometown so

here we go this is a photograph actually

I took this during the week when I was

over in the place I used to live I was

raised in the town of Stafford Stafford

now many people think that its Stratford

it is not Stratford that is a different

place altogether I was raised in a place

called Stafford and there is a view

taken in the local park in Stafford and

that is Victoria Parr

mark in the place where I was raised as

a child I wasn't raised in that Park

just in case you are wondering no

nothing like that I was born in Stafford

raised in Stafford and that is my

hometown but of course now I don't live

in Stafford I live in a place called

Much Wenlock and that is where I am

broadcasting to you live from right now

at five minutes past two o'clock on a

Friday afternoon as I've already

mentioned it is the fifth day of May

isn't the year going quickly don't you

think it's going by so quickly we are

already into May the weather today well

this morning I woke up to the most

glorious view would you like to see the

view from my house this morning here it

is so this is the view that greeted me

this morning when I woke up looking out

towards Shrewsbury you can see in the

distance you can see some buildings in

the far distance that is actually

Shrewsbury and you can also see some of

the landscape you can see lots of

rapeseed that yellow color is actually

rapeseed growing in the fields so there

it was this morning a glorious morning

now during the past few morning's it

around about five o'clock in the morning

I have been woken up by one particular

sound and that is the sound of bird call

now during the late spring and summer

months quite often the birds will sing

all together when the Sun rises so as it

starts to get light outside all of the

birds will sing together we call it the

dawn chorus

have you heard of that dawn chorus and

that means the moment when all of the

birds sing as the Sun rises so during

the past few morning's I have been woken

up by the dawn chorus now this morning I

was planning to get up early to record

the birds singing at the start of today

can you believe it this morning the

birds decided that they weren't going to

sing so I went to a lot of trouble this

morning to wake up very early at around

about 5 o'clock in the morning and the

birds can you believe it decided this

morning that they weren't going to have

a door and chorus they were going to be

very awkward so sadly there was no dawn

chorus for me to record this morning

which was very annoying so maybe I will

have some luck next week let's just see

what happens there shall we for those

who have just joined me welcome it is

the view from the window this morning

what about the live view outside let's

have a look right now so this is the

outside of the house right now at this

very moment in time and a little bit

later on I will be going outside to give

you some flash words

and some flash phrases as well so there

it is the live view at the moment that

is actually live outside in my garden

and a little bit later on I will be

going outside to talk to you live you do

to see the Blackbird then a black bird

just flew I of course the birds are very

busy at the moment because many of them

now are raising their little chicks so

many of them have fledglings to look

after of course

as beautiful as nature is there is

always a downside to nature so looking

at the birds and the trees and all the

landscape it's very nice but there are

some downsides to nature especially this

time of the year

when there are lots of tiny fledglings

young birds flying around of course I am

talking about the Predators the

Predators birds that prey on other birds

especially the young birds in this area

where I live there are lots of birds of

prey lots of predators including

buzzards

we have many buzzards around here flying

around you can normally see them in the

afternoon circling in the sky looking

for their next meal and of course we

have Magpies as well Magpies are very

mischievous birds so we do have lots of

Magpies also flying around looking for

something tasty to eat so besides the

nice things in nature there are also

some not so nice things and at this time

of the year when all of the young chicks

are flying around they are still getting

used to being alive and getting used to

the

surroundings and of course you might

find that there will be many predators

ready to swoop in and take the young

chicks away I know it's not very

pleasant is it but sometimes nature is

rather unpleasant so coming up today we

have lots of things we have some

excerpts from some of my English lessons

now way back in 2014 can you remember

that far back can you remember 2014 it

was three years ago so yes it was a long

time ago I did a series of English

lessons called mr. Duncan's Maydays and

I did a series of Mayday lessons way

back in 2014 and today I thought it

would be nice to show you one of those

made a lesson because of course we are

into the month of May May has arrived

so a little bit later on I will show you

one of my made a lessons I did a series

of lessons during the month of May in

2014 also we have an excerpt from one of

so much information to give you today

and I have such a lot to talk about and

don't forget you will also have a chance

to get involved as well later on when I

newcomer here let me just explain that

you will have a chance to type your

isn't technology amazing I think so so

I hope so talking of Technology how long

do your electrical devices last for how

long do they last for before they break

before they break down and what is the

oldest piece of electrical equipment

that you have

now when I say electrical equipment or

devices

I mean household things like washing

machines or maybe toasters maybe kettles

or maybe your stove so how long have

your or how long do your electrical

devices tend to last and what is your

oldest electrical device the oldest one

later on today I will be showing you my

oldest electrical device something that

uses electricity that I've had for a

very long time now the reason why I

mention this is because this week I went

to see my mother and when I arrived at

my mum's house my mum said that her

kettle had broken and the disappointing

part of that story is that I only bought

that kettle for my mother last year I

actually bought it last year for my

mother's birthday a year ago and already

the kettle has broken it has stopped

working so my question is what is the

oldest electrical appliance that's a

great word isn't it appliance so we can

say that something that you use in your

everyday life something that carries out

a task or does something for you and is

powered by electricity we can call it a

device or an appliance appliance

excuse me I just had to clear my throat

then so that is a question coming up

today also here's a good one here's a

great question

how well do you get on with your

neighbors oh yes how well do you get on

with your neighbors we all have them we

all live next door to someone some of us

live next door to many people some of us

don't but we all have someone nearby who

lives next to us or near us they are of

course our neighbors how well do you get

on with your neighbors another question

must be how often do you see your

neighbors do you see your neighbors very

often and do you speak to them now the

reason why I asked this is because I've

noticed a strange trend in society

certainly here in England that people

don't talk to their neighbors as much as

they used to I don't think we are as

friendly as we used to be towards our

neighbors so there is another question

to ask you today how friendly are you

toward your neighbors do you see your

neighbors very often do you see them at

all and if you do see them do you speak

to them and have you ever had a fight

with your neighbor

have you ever fallen out have you ever

had a disagreement with your neighbors

ever has it ever happened

you will have a chance to tell me later

on because we will be opening the live

will be going into my kitchen to make a

so let's have a look at one of my made a

lessons this is one of a series of

lessons that I made in 2014 and I did

these as a way of celebrating the month

of May so I thought hmmm let's show one

of those May Day lessons today

when water freezes it turns to ice it

becomes solid when heat is applied to

ice it begins to melt the ice melts if

an object is frozen in ice it also

becomes solid if heat is applied to the

frozen object then it begins to thaw it

thaws out there are some idioms and

phrases in English that concern ice for

example break the ice

the phrase break the ice means to begin

something or start something off

normally this is used in social

situations if you approach a person you

have never met before

then you will need to have something to

say to them you need to break the ice a

party needs a starting point it needs

something to break the ice if you are

going out on a date with someone then

you need an interesting subject to talk

about small talk can be a form of this

ice breaking it is a method of getting a

conversation and perhaps even a little

bit more underway

another idiom using ice is to be on thin

ice this phrase means that a person is

pushing their look someone is in danger

of coming to harm because they are going

too far with something if you keep

pushing your look by taking risks then

we can say that you are on thin ice we

can also say that a person is skating on

thin ice this has a similar meaning it

means that if you keep doing the same

thing then you will come to harm another

phrase is cold as ice we can describe a

person as being cold as ice if they have

no feelings for others this person seems

to have no emotions

a person who hurts other people

emotionally without showing any guilt or

remorse can be described as being as

cold as ice to receive no positive

emotion or response from a person or a

group of people can be described as icy

or frosty he greeted me with an icy

stare the reception they gave me was

frosty then there is see you on the ice

this expression means see you out there

you might say this before a performance

to another person who is also taking

part the final ice phrase is don't cut

no ice this phrase means that a person

or thing has no influence your mind

cannot be changed and your decision will

not be altered your kind words and

excuses don't cut no ice with me

I have no idea what you're trying to say

to me I really love technology it's so

useful

not to mention cool the only problem

with it is that there are so many words

to learn and remember the formal word

for these phrases is terminology some of

these words and phrases seem to make no

sense and are hard to understand we can

also use the word jargon to describe

these phrases many computer experts use

jargon when they are explaining

something the average person will not

understand what they are talking about

could you please explain it to me simply

without all the jargon a person who is

not familiar with a certain subject can

be described as a layman to simplify a

subject can be described as putting it

into layman's terms in computing there

is a lot of jargon to understand this is

one of the reasons why people are put up

or discouraged from learning about

computing words such as bits and bytes

megabytes and terabytes firewalls bitmap

override boot reboot copy and paste drag

encryption what is the difference

between software and hardware the list

goes on and on

some examples of computer jargon

firewall in computing terms a firewall

is a system that filters information as

it enters a computer a firewall limits

the information and the ability to

access the computer this prevents

unauthorized users from accessing the

computer and its contents a firewall can

be in a piece of software or hardware a

computer has the ability to store

information this is done digitally

digital information consists of a series

of ones and zeros the computer is a

digital machine as it can only read

information in this form a computer

reads information as one being on and

zero being off this type of information

can also be called a binary system

translated it means a 2-fold signal the

simple construction of this system

allows information to be stored in huge

amounts from the small kilobyte which is

a thousand bytes right up to the

mind-blowing yottabyte which is a

trillion trillion bytes or to put it

another way a septillion bytes yes there

is such a word as septillion to show you

just how large a septillion is counting

up to it from one would take millions of

years

I have received an email from Lena who

Lena asks what the word chav means well

Lena I'm not sure where you heard this

word but it is not one that is used

outside the UK the word chaff is a noun

that refers to someone in their youth

who behaves in an unsociable or loutish

way and often wears fake or genuine

designer sports clothes it is a very

derogatory and offensive term that

emerged in the 1990s to call someone a

chaff would be seen as appearing better

than the subject it is not used much

these days but references to it can

still be seen in movies and TV

programmes made during the 1990s and

early 2000s well sadly it is time for me

to make the jump to light speed and zoom

childhood used to go to the circus with

my family my parents used to take me to

the circus but nowadays it would appear

that lots of people don't like the

circus anymore they find certain

practices of not all circuses but some

of them to be rather cruel and inhumane

circuses do you think they are good or

well when I talk about keeping fit or

staying healthy certainly when it comes

to eating then there are certain things

that I do all the time so not just at

certain times of the day or during

certain meals but maybe during all of my

meals so for example I don't eat as much

fat as I used to so I don't eat much

meat anymore in fact I only eat meat

once a week or maybe twice a week but

for the rest of the week I don't eat

meat although having said that I do eat

fish which some people might say is meat

but it is a lot healthier it is a

healthy alternative to meat so you can

have fish instead of meat so there are a

couple of things that I do in my diet to

keep me healthy also of course I do a

lot of walking I like to stay very

active I get lots of exercise every

single day so that is another thing you

with my son's well what a coincidence

circus is coming to my area as well now

number 19 and in it I discuss many

different subjects Oh little floater in

my eye

shy because when I look your way you run

and hide

here's a word that when looked at

appears unreal this word is a real word

but its appearance seems odd as it

contains many consonants the word is

unbeknownst this word is a British

variation of unbeknown they both have

the same definition which is to be

unaware of certain information to do

something without being seen by anybody

an unknown thing is unbeknownst or

unbeknown without knowledge is

unbeknownst an action that has taken

place but is not known about is

talk about the things we have done in

the past in English there are certain

words we must use to show that this is

so using past tense may seem confusing

that something we did in the past is no

longer done we can also show that

something was done in the past for a

friends in Scotland other words include

always and

have I always stay with my friends at

Christmas I have always taken care of

myself I have always been keen on nature

in these sentences we are showing that

the habit is still continuing it is

still going on you have not stopped

doing it here is a good example of an

English word that is often used

incorrectly the word paraphrase is one

that is often misused

it is on occasion placed within a

sentence by mistake to paraphrase

something means to change the wording of

a sentence so as to make it clearer to

emphasize the meaning of something might

require you to paraphrase you reword a

sentence so as to make it appear more

clear teachers often paraphrase

sentences so as to allow their students

to recognize the important points of a

subject to express something in as clear

a way as possible might require some

paraphrasing to take place even here in

my English lessons

I often paraphrase so as to ensure that

my explanations come across as clearly

as they can many people believe that to

paraphrase is to shorten a sentence this

is not true to emphasize and clarify a

sentence is to paraphrase the word

originates from the Greek word para

which means modification and phrasing

is already ok it is very tempting to

alter something just for the sake of it

just for something to do it would appear

that the human condition is to always

look for problems even when there are

non to find so if you decide to make

changes to something that is already

working smoothly then don't be too

surprised if someone approaches you and

says if it ain't broke don't fix it

today is it better to learn English

through watching movies with or without

subtitles this interesting question

comes from Rodrigo marketing who lives

in Argentina as you are no doubt aware I

use subtitles in all of my lessons they

act as a guide for those who have a

basic grasp of English and now wish to

advance further while watching a movie

you will find subtitles useful for

getting used to the fast pace of English

speech and dialogue and accustomed to

the many different accents which exist

in English

some people find certain American

accents hard to follow

subtitles allow you to closely study the

words on the screen as they are spoken

subtitles serve a very important role

and are an invaluable tool for those

adjusting to the faster paced delivery

of English after a while you can start

listening to the words without the

subtitles and see how much you can

understand while watching my lessons you

can cover or hide the subtitles or just

simply listen to the sound test yourself

regularly this is not a quick solution

and just like any other learning

exercise it will take time so to answer

your question subtitles are very useful

and they do provide a great aid to those

who really want to improve their English

listening and comprehension skills

beautiful Chinese calligraphy is printed

which means people from a far far away

in this world are all related to me this

proverb inspires me a lot and that comes

working perfectly
