Also, I've noticed that my glasses keep slipping down after cutting my hair.

Always a very exciting time of year for me for various reasons.

Now a few people have written to me asking when my birthday is.

So it is this month on the 12th of August,

and of course during the month of August we often have nice weather as well.

The weather today is absolutely gorgeous outside

and there it is that is actually outside the window right now.

You can see it is rather warm.

You can see the heat vapour moving past the camera,

and we are looking at one of the many beautiful sights around this area.

And it is a very warm day.

Of course, there are problems that are caused by hot weather.

When the weather gets hot, when the temperature begins to rise, certain things will happen.

At the moment we have lots of insects flying around causing all sorts of chaos.

Last Sunday we were outside in the garden with Mr.

Steve and also myself, and we were talking about

quite a few subjects last Sunday, including ants,

those pesky little insects that get everywhere.

Well, can you believe it?

Yesterday

we had a lot of ants in our garden.

Would you like to see them?

They were all coming out because the weather is now very, very hot.

And also lots of ants will begin to to find new places

to build their nests.

So for those who do not like

insects, you are probably not going to like this.

So there you can see lots of ants coming out yesterday.

Some of them have wings.

Some of them are very large as well.

You will notice some of them are very big ants

that are flying away and they will be queens.

They will form their new nests.

And then of course there are lots of work ants.

They are the ones that do all the work

and they are running around as well.

So if you don't like ants, then then maybe this is not the sort of thing you should be looking at.

But I suppose the most annoying thing about ants is that they get everywhere.

You cannot get rid of them.

They are very feisty little creatures.

If something is feisty, it means it has a lot of energy and a lot of courage

so that they are not easy to get rid of.

They do

take a long time to get rid of.

If you are trying to remove ants from your house or in your garden, because that's the problem.

When do you get ants?

Quite often they will come into the house and once they come into the house,

they are very hard to get rid of.

It is very hard to get rid of ants.

There is an expression that we often use.

You might have ants in your pants

if you have ants in your pants, it means you are very active.

Or maybe you are restless for some reason.

So I hope you enjoyed that.

And of course, one of the big problems in your kitchen.

If you get ants in the kitchen, they will.

They will go to where all of the sweet food is kept and they are incredibly annoying.

We don't get large ants here.

Then the ants are not very big.

However, they are just as annoying.

In fact, I think small ants

are more annoying than large ones because they get everywhere

and they can get into your cupboards and into your food

and there is nothing worse than having lots of ants around.

They can be a real pain in the neck.

So normally in the summertime, especially when the weather is hot,

you will find that the ants will all come out and

they will try to find new places to live.

but it's not very good at making plans

for his social life or his pleasure, as it were.

So quite often we make plans for the future.

In fact, that is the only way you can make plans for the future.

Something that is going to happen a period of time

in the future that you want to to do something in.

So during that period of time, you will do something

and that is what we are looking at today.

It is common for people to make plans for their future.

I think it is something we all like to do.

We all like to maybe think about the things we will do this year,

or maybe in the distant future, we will look at all of those things today.

So it is common for people to make plans for their future.

And of course, when you think about your life,

there are many things that you can plan for.

Maybe a big event that is coming up in your life,

maybe something that you want to do in the future.

You can't do it at the moment, but maybe in the future you will do it.

It can create a sense of

direction and purpose in someone's life.

The action of making plans.

So I think it is something people enjoy doing.

We enjoy doing it because it gives us a sense of of direction

or maybe a sense of purpose,

a reason for existing even.

I know it sounds like a very dramatic thing to say, but it is true.

We often make plans because we want to have something in the future,

something to look forward to, something that lies ahead,

that we will do at some point.

So I think it is true that making plans for the future

does give a person a sense of purpose and also direction as well.

Plans are made for a near

future time, so when we talk about near future, we mean maybe

a few weeks from now or over the next month.

So short plans or the near future

things that you plan to do over the next few weeks,

or maybe over the next month or two,

plans are made for a near future time,

or a time in the distant future, or later in life.

So you might make a plan for

Christmas.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe I just said that.

I don't think I've ever used the word Christmas before

in August, but some people now, even now,

some people are making plans for the Christmas season.

All I can say.

It's too early.

It's too early to talk about Christmas.

Please, please don't talk about Christmas.

It's too.

Soon.

But some people are doing that

and of course later in life.

So it is not unusual.

It isn't unusual for people to make plans for themselves later in life.

Now, I suppose when you are young, if you are a teenager,

or maybe if you are in your early 20s, you are still very young.

Perhaps you are not that worried,

or you are not very concerned about making plans for the future.

However.

If there is one thing I realise,

or I've certainly realised it as I've got older,

is the best time to make your plans is quite often when you are young.

So have something planned, have something in place.

You don't have to plan many things,

but it is sometimes good to have a sort of pact,

something you will follow, a direction that you

you plan to go in in your life.

And of course, as you get older, I think we all start making plans for the future

because then it becomes more realistic in the future,

becomes something that is very tangible.

You can almost touch the future as you get older,

and maybe you realise there are things that you have to do as well, things

you have to have in place, things you have to plan for as you get older.

So that is certainly something I would agree with

from my own point of view in my own personal life.

And I suppose from Steve, his point of view as well,

we have done a lot of planning over the past 3 or 4 months about the future.

Not all of those things are happy things, by the way,

but some of them are, and some of them are not.

So there are many ways of of planning your future.

You might plan something for the near future,

or maybe the distant future.

A time that is far, far away

but still very important.

An activity or project can be planned

for a certain time, certain

a certain point, a certain time, a certain date.

That means you are choosing one particular thing.

So when we refer to something as certain, a certain thing,

we are pointing one thing out.

Maybe a certain date or a certain month.

That is the point at which you want to do something.

So that is the reason why we often refer to it as a certain time.

It is a point of time that you are planning to do something on or during.

Plans can be made definite with detail

and it is common for people

to make plans that they are very clear on or they are sure of.

You make plans to do something maybe you arrange to meet a friend

at a certain time, on a certain date, in a certain place.

So all of those things are definite.

You have decided, you have confirmed

with the other person that that thing will happen.

It is definite.

It will happen.

We have made that plan.

Or of course you can make a plan

provisionally without much detail.

So maybe you you have an idea.

Maybe you are talking with your friend about something and you think,

maybe we should go out for dinner next month,

and then you both decide when you can do it.

You might not arrange to do it straight away,

but you might have something planned.

But you don't have any details.

There are no details.

There are no definite plans.

So something is provisional.

You have made a plan provisionally.

It is not decided yet.

You don't have all the details.

You haven't decided when or where it will happen.

Something that is designed.

Something that is designed

but not yet made is a plan.

So perhaps you have decided to invent

something or design something.

Maybe a useful piece of equipment, or

maybe a new gadget that is very useful.

You might decide to design that thing.

You plan that particular thing.

You make a plan.

So quite often this is something that is practical.

You actually do it yourself.

You make a plan.

So maybe you draw your plan.

Maybe you write something down as your plan.

So something that has not yet been made or constructed

is of course, a plan.

We describe it as being in the early stages.

Maybe you have just started making plans for it.

We can say that it is still in the planning stage.

If something is in the planning stage, it means you are still discussing it.

You haven't made any solid plans,

it is still being designed.

You will still thinking of what it will look like.

So quite often plans

take a long time to be made

a definite plan

is sure and decided

while an undecided plan is not finished and could still change.

So if you make a plan that has been decided, that means there will be no changes made.

It is a solid plan.

Sometimes we might make a plan that is undecided.

It could still change.

You might still make changes to those plans, maybe something you are designing

or perhaps a moment of time where you plan to do something.

You might change the arrangements,

you might make changes.

You might say that a plan is up in the air

if it has not yet been decided.

So if you haven't made the plan,

if you haven't agreed on the plan,

we can say that it is up in the air.

It is a great expression that means something has not been decided.

I am not sure what we are going to do next week.

It is still up

in the air.

We haven't made any definite plans.

We are still trying to decide what to do.

For example, the new plans or the plans for the new housing

scheme are still up in the air at the moment, so perhaps there is something

that you are planning to do, but you haven't made any decisions.

The plans for the new housing scheme

are still up in the air at the moment.

That means we haven't made any decisions yet.

You might make plans for a certain period of time,

such as a week plan or a month plan.

So some people might plan ahead

by just one week or maybe one month.

Quite often in your job, if you have a certain type of job

where you have to plan your schedule before you start your new week,

then you will make plans quite often for the following week.

Steve has to do that, you say because of his job.

So quite often Mr. Steve has to make plans

in his work

diary so he knows where he will be during the following week.

So it does happen quite a lot.

sometimes people can make plans for the whole year,

but I would say that is more unusual.

People don't normally plan their whole year in advance

a schedule or schedule.

How do you say it?

We can say that something is scheduled to happen.

It has been planned.

For example, if you are waiting at the airport,

the plane is scheduled to take off at 10 p.m..

So the schedule is the plan.

When something is going to happen quite often at an airport,

you will look at the schedule board

or the notice board, where all of the times of the

the flights leaving are listed.

So the schedule or schedule

is something that lists when things are going to happen,

when they will take place.

Many people

have a diary or planner that they can check so as to know

where they should be at a certain time, so it isn't unusual.

Maybe if you are one of those very posh people who have

one of these,

maybe you have a phone and perhaps you have a plan on your phone.

So you might have an alarm that will ring when

you have to do something.

So it is very common.

Many people have a diary or a planner.

Of course, some people still have the old fashioned paper diary that they have to turn the pages of.

Like Steve, Steve

still has an old fashioned

diary so he can put all of his appointments

in so he won't forget them.

But I know a lot of people these days will use modern technology

to record their schedule or their schedule.

The choice is yours.

And before we finish

today, we have the most common things planned,

so things we will often plan on for

include

parties, maybe a certain celebration,

maybe a certain type of party such as a birthday party.

Maybe a person is having their birthday over the next few days,

maybe around the 12th of August for example.

Maybe someone is having a birthday they.

Also, you might plan your holiday.

I know a lot of people, a lot of friends of mine.

In fact, many people have booked their holidays for next year already.

So there are some people who have already booked their holiday

for next year, or even the year after as well.

So there are people making plans already for 2026,

which is a very long way off.

But it is true that many people do like to have

something planned, some sort of trip

vacation holiday

because it gives you something to look forward to.

Quite often in life, when you are working every day, you have to

work five days a week, sometimes six days a week.

You have to have something to look forward to.

So your vacation time, your holiday time is very important.

And I think that's the reason why a lot of people, they will make plans

a long time before they happen.

And I think that's one of the reasons why people like to book their holiday very early,

because then it gives them something in the future

to look forward to, something that will come in the future.

Weddings?

Oh yes. Weddings.

I suppose you can plan a wedding, maybe a couple who are planning to get married.

Perhaps they will make plans for the wedding

and maybe some sort of celebration afterwards as well.

Interesting.

It's been a long time since I went to a wedding.

The last time I went to a wedding, I think it was

maybe three years ago, the last time I went to a wedding.

Although.

I did, of course, have my own last year, last August.

That's all I'm saying about that.

And of course, these days, because many people like to plan ahead

for all of their things, some people even plan their own funerals.

It's true.

It's not unusual nowadays for for people to go to a company

or maybe a company that arranges your your funeral for you.

So some people plan their funeral.

And when I say that, I mean all of the things that will happen.

The colour of the coffin,

the music

that you want played as you are, as you are carried

into the church

or into the graveyard.

Some people do.

It is very common nowadays for people to plan their own funerals.

It is not an unusual thing.

It does happen.

In fact, we have adverts, TV advertisements,

advertising companies

that will arrange your funeral for you.

Some people like to do that.

Some people don't want to do that because they think they will live forever.

And of course general events as well.

Things that are happening, things that are happening

in the future, maybe a special event, maybe something you've planned

with your family or your friends.

Maybe you've just planned some sort of

get together

rendezvous, maybe a type of meeting where you will meet other people and get together.

Maybe some of your old school friends, maybe some of your classmates you haven't seen for a long time.

You might arrange an event for you to get together.

So there are many ways of expressing plans.

There are many ways of expressing future plans.

Things you will plan for the future.

I have to say,

and I know I've said this already,

I am not very good at making plans.

Very bad, very bad at making plans.

It was a little bit of a nightmare

when when we were planning the trip

to Italy to meet up with you.

It was a bit of a nightmare, but Steve

did something very clever and it's not very often that happens.

It is not very often.

So we decided to get a company to do it for us.

So Steve decided to ask someone to do all of the arranging for us.

And that was it.

By the way, we had a lovely time meeting up with you.

Maybe in 2025 we will do it again.

We will have another rendezvous, myself, Mr.

Steve and maybe you as well.

We will have to make plans

for it.

And that, as they say, is almost that for today.

Whatever your plans are for the future,

whatever they may be, may they go well, may they be successful,

and may they bring all the joy as you want.

Duncan, your wedding, and I also remember your birthday.

Well, the wedding was the day before my birthday.

Florence has some bad news.

I don't like bad news.

There is too much bad news around at the moment.

But Florence says, a month ago, my bike

was stolen here in Geneva.

I think one of the worst feelings that you can have

is to lose something through theft.

It is really annoying when someone steals from you.

There is no excuse for it.

Whatever people say, stealing

is not a nice thing to do to another person.

I've had many things stolen from me in my life,

especially when I was living in China.

I had many, many things stolen.

Two bikes.

I had two bikes stolen.

One of them was brand new, a bike.
