oh hello there hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today

are you okay I hope so are you happy are you happy that is the question I am

asking right now are you happy I really hope so here we are then outside on a

Saturday just after lunchtime it is around about 5 minutes past midday 12

p.m. it's just after lunchtime although I'm not having my lunch just yet in

about an hour and a half I will be going into town to have some lunch with mr.

Steve but at the moment I'm standing in the garden and I think it might be the

first time I've ever done a livestream in the rain

it is raining at the moment and I've had to put a big cover over my head to

protect myself so if you see anything flapping around above my head that is

the reason why I am undercover but I am still outside I think this might be the

first time I've ever done a livestream in the rain so at the moment it is

raining and we've had some glorious weather over the past few days it's been

absolutely gorgeous but today everything has changed it has reverted oh I like

that word reverted if something revert it means it goes back to its former

state so the way it was before so if something reverts it goes back to how it

was before it reverts very similar to reverse so revert means to go back to

its former state so the weather at the moment has reverted to typical British

summer weather which is rain and lots of gray clouds anyway I'm feeling great

today even though last night I had a terrible night's sleep I couldn't get to

sleep last night at all I found it very difficult to slow

because it was so hot so the weather yesterday was at its peak the highest

temperature yesterday and it was very humid so last night in bed I could not

get to sleep I was tossing I was turning I couldn't get to sleep I was awake

until around about 3:30 in the morning I could just couldn't get to sleep

it was so hard it was so hot in the in in the bedroom the windows were open but

there was no air nothing no fresh air was coming into the house so it was

really quite hot and humid so I didn't sleep very well which worried me I was a

bit worried I thought well maybe I won't have enough energy to do the live stream

but to be honest with you I feel quite good this morning I woke up as usual

with a smile on my face so glad that I get to see another day of existence

isn't that lovely I hope you are well - I'm going to set the live stream up so

just give me a moment oh that was easy I've done it quite quickly there so here

we go it's Saturday my name is mr. Duncan if you don't know who I am I am

garden in the rain it's not raining heavily it is what we call

all drizzle drizzle so drizzle means something that falls very lightly it

isn't too heavy so the rain at the moment I can feel it on my hand the rain

at the moment it is just drizzle drizzle so it's not too bad

known as hay fever I don't like it it makes my nose very

sore it makes my throat sore as well it makes my eyes itchy and my nose runs and

I sneeze quite often during the hay fever season so if I do sneeze I

when you watch my videos you can always stop the video you can pause it or if

you want to review the video you can watch it again so sometimes there might

be words that you don't understand or maybe a word that you hear or maybe you

see a word on the subtitles sometimes that you don't understand or maybe you

don't know the meaning of but I always suggest that you can stop the video like

that you can pause the video you can

stop the video so if there is something that you hear or see in the video that

you want to understand more clearly you can

pause the video you can stop the video and look at what is on the screen so

that is my advice to you learning is the same whatever you are trying to learn

whatever you are interested in learning is always the same the process is always

the same you have to do things in stages many people make the mistake of trying

to learn too much too soon when sometimes you just need to give

yourself a little bit of space to breathe you need to do it carefully but

also don't do too much don't overdo it or else you might feel too stressed and

then perhaps you will give up so don't worry too much if you don't understand

everything it is perfectly normal that is how we all learn I really learn too

explained you learn just the way you learn anything you learn from what I

call the basics the simple parts of any subject are the first things you learn

hello mr. Duncan please give me some advice how to understand another English

accent yours is very pure but there are some really hard there are some accents

that are really hard to understand will I sympathize with you and can I just say

something there are accents in English that even I don't understand clearly and

this is something I always explain when when students say I don't understand

everyone when they speak English but the thing to remember is sometimes even

native speakers like me don't understand some of the accents Scottish accents can

be very difficult to understand they are not clear sometimes with the

pronunciation so what I always say is don't worry too much about it because

quite often even a native English speaker will have difficulty

understanding certain accents and the reason why I speak clearly is because

that's how I speak so this is my my normal speaking voice

this isn't put on this is how I normally speak even in everyday life this is how

I speak hmm it is very generous of you mr. Duncan thank you very much you are

welcome it's not a problem I enjoy doing this and I hope you enjoy watching

my advice is always the same thing you need to make it a part of your life

you need to get into the habit of learning new words every day and slowly

you build your word power it happens over a period of time you can't rush it

never try to rush learning something because the fact is eventually you won't

well it's really raining now it is chucking it down it is coming down very

heavily something very strange happened during

the week now we've had some very weird weather over the past few days it's been

very dry but also very windy which is very unusual for summertime during the

summertime we don't tend to have strong wind but this week there were there was

dry weather and also very strong winds and something very strange happened

right here do you want to know what it was many farmers at the moment are

cutting the grass they are making bales of hay for the animals to feed on later

in the year but something very strange happened whilst they were cutting the

grass the wind caught some of the grass and carried it into the air and a lot of

it landed in the garden in fact the house on the roof has lots of hay on top

of it and also in the garden there there are pieces of hay lying around you want

to see some of it there's some right here look so this this was literally

falling from the sky the other day this was falling out of the sky

so this is hay that was being cut during the week so when this is growing it is

grass once it is cut once it has been trimmed we call this hay hay so this is

hay and because of the strong winds during the week this was flying all over

the place and lots of it was landing in the garden so it's everywhere some

clumps and lots of fragments as well fragments of hay everywhere apparently

rana says I love rainy days I'm not sure if I share

you're feeling I'm not sure if I share your opinion of that but yes I suppose

the rain is okay as long as you are not outside in the rain like today so the

forecast yesterday was for rain and here it is

the weather forecast was right thank you for getting it right and making my live

stream very soggy can you give us some advice on interesting books to read this

summer well there are many different types of books it just depends what you

are interested in so there are many different types of story many different

types of novels many different types of books that you can buy about all sorts

of things some people like a particular type of

story some people like to read historical books they like to read about

history and things that happened in the past other people like to read crime

novels books about crimes sometimes the crimes are real and they really happened

and sometimes the crimes are fictitious they are fiction fiction and fact so

fact and fiction are antonyms they are the opposites so fact means something

that is real it really happened fiction is something that is unreal it

has been created it it is I suppose you could use the word fake fake now there

is a word that is being used a lot recently acmad hello Ahmed nice to see

don't worry Olga says the strong wind is starting around the place where I am at

the moment maybe it's the same wind that you had before yes maybe the wind has

moved away from here and now it has gone to where you are Olga I

think so we need simple books yes well there are many different types of

textbook you can buy and of course you have the Internet I love the Internet

there are so many things you can read so much you can learn from surfing the

internet so don't forget you can also find lots of simple lessons lots of very

basic lessons and texts on the Internet hi mr. Duncan you're always providing us

the most beautiful landscapes we've already seen during the English classes

it is very hot apparently in Egypt it is hot you are

lucky it's cool and raining here in fact today it feels a little bit tropical

I'll be honest with you so maybe it isn't very warm but it does feel humid

it feels very damp the air feels like it's got a lot of moisture around mr.

Duncan could you please tell me how we can prepare ourselves for the IELTS exam

well once again III don't want to repeat myself but normally it is best if you

find out the things that the IELTS test will test you on one of the big things

that they will test you on is your comprehension the way you understand

English and I think this is the hardest part of learning English and quite

possibly learning any language so you have to understand you have to have the

comprehension when we talk about comprehension we mean

understanding the meaning of words and sentences so you comprehend you

understand so quite often in the IELTS test you will be tested to find out if

you can really understand what is being said so you might listen to a

conversation taking place you might read something and then you are asked

questions about it quite often they will do both

so they need to to understand if you comprehend English they need to find out

how much English you understand so I think possibly the hardest part of the

IELTS test is the comprehension test where they find out how much English

you understand in your brain it's a very hard thing but also it is a very useful

thing for both you and the examiner a very useful thing indeed voila oh it

would appear that wala is also suffering from hay fever I was suffering from hay

fever two years ago and then I started drinking ginger with lemon and honey and

also I use a lot of garlic in my recipes now I feel better well I've heard that

garlic can be very good for all sorts of things and and garlic is something I eat

a lot of so I do eat a lot of garlic but yes I like your suggestion about the

ginger and lemon and honey in a drink I like that the garden around you also

looks tropical it does doesn't it well if you look behind me carefully if you

look carefully you can see just over there can you see that there is actually

a tropical plant growing in the garden so that particular plant there is

actually tropical it is not supposed to grow here in the UK

but it is a tropical plant but we didn't plant it we didn't plant it it was here

when we moved here but now it is getting very large quite large so yes it doesn't

look like I'm in a rainforest at the moment and you can see already the the

rain is starting to drip can you see the rain it is dripping behind me the rain

is falling from above it is something I don't love we live British English very

much oh thank you very much you're you're welcome mr. Duncan can you

make Spanish accents well I'm not going to do an accent today

I will just stick with British English accent I think

yes well the reason why I always try to speak clearly even though my accent is

clear anyway is because I want you to understand what I'm saying

I remember when I was in China when I first joined the school that I was

working for there was a teacher there who was from Scotland and as I mentioned

earlier the Scottish accent can be very difficult to understand and many of the

students when I arrived at the school they all said Oh mr. Duncan we are so

happy we can hear what you say we can understand you we have another teacher

here at the school and he's from Scotland and we can never understand

what he says so the Scottish accent can be very difficult to understand even for

us even for native English speakers so that is the reason why it is better to

be understood if you are teaching a language it's a little bit like taking

driving lessons from someone who doesn't know how to drive a car it would be

useless wouldn't it it certainly would because Exmouth your

garden looks like paradise it is amazing it seems like fiction well I can

guarantee I can tell you now that this is real

everything you see behind me now is real do you want me to go over there but the

only problem is if I go over there I will get wet because now it is raining

heavily when I say I don't quite understand Brits always don't quite

comprehend and think I didn't get anything at all Thank You Sergio

sometimes and again this is something that I'm saying because I like to be

honest with you sometimes native English speakers can be very impatient ah maybe

you've had this situation yourself so maybe you've tried to communicate with

someone who is a native English speaker but sometimes they seem very impatient

they don't have time to to try and understand what you're saying so yes I

think that can happen sometimes I think you can have a situation where a native

English speaker might have no patience they don't want to try and understand

what you're saying even if your English is quite clear and maybe if it's the

opposite way round maybe you don't understand what the native English

speaker is saying and the same thing applies so the native English speaker

might not have the patience to keep explaining themselves they won't have

the patience to keep repeating themselves so this can happen sometimes

but don't worry I can guarantee that I am a very patient person so you don't

have to worry about me if you want me to repeat myself a million times I will

don't worry about that Giovanni says it doesn't look like a summer day where you

are and you are right it doesn't look like it it's very humid and it's also

something and try doing something well again it's basically the same thing

except for in one case you are talking about actually doing it so du is the

action of doing and doing expresses the actual action of the thing you are doing

so they are basically the same thing but they are used in slightly different ways

but the base meaning is identical I am trying to do something I am in the

process of doing something so doing is active I am not so close to that volcano

but I live on the foot of another volcano which is Mount Etna hello Maria

something hi mr. Duncan according to your personal experience which country

is the most similar to the UK as a French person I think we are very

similar what do you think thank you owl owl I think you are watching in France

well yes there are many similarities between French culture and what I would

call British culture certainly the language there are many words that exist

in French that we use in English and also there are many words the

exist in English that have been derived they have been created from the French

language they have used French to create certain English words so I suppose

France is very similar if I was to say a country I tell you where I'm going to

tell you where right now I suppose countries like Australia New Zealand I

know what you're going to say but mr. Duncan they speak English and also they

are British colonies or they were so yes I suppose a country where English is not

spoken but is very similar to Britain I would say probably France yes I think

that's actually a good good way of looking at it yes I think so should I

speak to myself to practice English asks Rana the answer to that is yes yes never

be afraid to talk to yourself to listen to the way you speak another good thing

you can do is to record your voice and this is something I talked about many

years ago over ten years ago I made a lesson all about speaking and one of my

tips one of my little ideas to help you is to record your voice hello my name is

mr. Duncan and I enjoy speaking English and then you can listen hello Duncan

I enjoy speaking English you can listen back to your voice so there are many

ways of improving your English and a good one is to listen to your own voice

by recording it and of course another thing you can do you can also practice

in the mirror I'm not joking so look in the mirror speak English

to yourself in the mirror have a look at your face as you speak get used to the

sound of your own voice and also get used to

seeing yourself speak English these are all very helpful things and they can

really help you to improve not only your English but also your confidence as well

which is something many people have a problem with I am going in a moment yes

in the garden I am in the garden honestly and if you look behind me you

can see the birds there are some birds flying around me they are feeding just

behind me so yes I mean my garden here in the UK just behind me you can see all

the plants and flowers and also there is a lovely bird feeder where the birds

cricket I don't follow sport I think I should have a t-shirt and on the front

learn English by yourself is to listen to English being spoken by other people

and one of the best ways to do that is right here on the Internet

so first of all this is the best thing that you could be doing this is the best

that you can be doing right now is listening to English being spoken also

later on you will see subtitles under the video and also you can play them

that the videos you can play the lessons again and again in a game so you can

listen to these messages or these short videos or my live streams you can listen

to them again and again and again don't worry

about it there are many many many ways oh that's

screenshot that is a good idea yes I think so I am going in around about one

minute maybe two minutes and then I'm gone you can learn English alone it's
