so here we go it's another Sunday though

Sundays keep coming around so quickly

don't you think coming up today we have

lots of things on the live stream just

for you including words to do with

staying at a hotel what types of words

do you use when you want to reserve or

book or stay or of course the

preparation that is needed before you go

to the hotel itself all of that coming

up today and of course you are more than

welcome to join in on the live chat

after all it's just after two o'clock

here in the UK it's a Sunday afternoon

and this is live English

do-do-do-do-do so here we go then it is

Sunday and just as an aeroplane decides

to fly over my house we say hi everybody

this is mr. Duncan in England how are

you today are you okay

I hope so are you happy well are you

happy I really really hope so here we go

once again it is live it's Sunday

afternoon it is just coming up to five

minutes past two here in the UK I don't

know what time it is where you are

because I'm not there Here I am now live

in the garden and there are two reasons

why I am outside today first of all it's

a beautiful day

I couldn't resist coming outside to

enjoy some of this fine summer weather

well I say summer but of course

yesterday was the start of the

meteorological autumn so autumn

technically has already started so today

I thought I would do something a little

different I thought we would have a

little look back over the summer months

from this year also coming up today

we'll be talking about words connected

to staying at a hotel when you go to

check into a hotel when you stay at a

hotel and before you go to stay in a

hotel we will look at some of the words

connected to doing all those things and

of course mr. Steve will be here as well

I must admit it feels very strange to be

out here in the garden with the cows

watching me over there the cows are

actually watching me at this very moment

as I sit here and also some of my

neighbors are probably wondering why I

am outside talking to myself as well

so here we go then it is Sunday I hope

you are feeling SuperDuper quite a few

things to show you today first of all

here's something that I would like to

show you if I can get it onto the screen

there are some things that I didn't

think about today one of them was the

fact that the Sun is so bright I can't

see the screen very clearly would you

like to see something quite amazing

here it is we have some lovely

Housemartins at the back of the house

yesterday I filmed this and so

Housemartins

were actually gathering together in one

of the trees near my house would you

like to have a look at it right now

okay there it is a tree not far from my

house and you will notice that there are

lots and lots of Housemartins

in the tree now I think there must have

been around about a hundred at least a

hundred one hundred Housemartins

in that tree and you can see them they

are busily flying around they are

feeding and one of the reasons why they

are going crazy at the moment for food

is because they will be flying back to

the place from which they came earlier

in the year

they will be flying back to North Africa

can you believe it so these particular

birds have come all the way from North

Africa I really can't believe that it's

incredible isn't it so I hope you

enjoyed that

now I'm thinking to myself I would like

to see something in slow motion now that

would be quite nice wouldn't it shall we

have a look at something now in slow

motion so here are the Housemartins

flying away and we're doing this in slow

motion

Wow that looks incredible

so I counted around 100 100 at least a

hundred Housemartins

were gathered together in that tree so

that is something I filmed yesterday of

course you know I love showing you the

nature

I love letting you see all of the nature

shots around where I live and today is

no exception so I hope you are well

today it's mr. Duncan that's me I teach

English on YouTube sometimes I do it

recorded and sometimes I do it live like

now I am now live in the garden and I

have decided to do my whole live stream

outside now it's a little different

because I'm actually sitting down and

one of the problems that I realized this

morning was where I want to sit is not

level so you might notice that

everything is is leaning slightly it is

leaning over so I do apologize if that

is putting you off your your dinner or

supper it might look a little odd on the

screen perhaps you could get your

computer and you could tip it slightly

you could put it at an angle and then

maybe it will look better

anyway mr. Steve will be here later on

don't worry he will be here live it

around about half past 2 but as I

mentioned we will be looking at some of

our lovely summer memories as we say

goodbye to summer 2018 and what a summer

it's been it's been wonderful I suppose

I should also look at the live chat as

well so let's get the live chat up on

the screen because sometimes people get

very excited because they want to see

the live chat

so let's have a look shall we the live

down which of course creates many

problems because it's very hard to set

the camera up when you are in one

position for those who know about

that sometimes it is very hard to set up

a camera if you are filming a subject

that is stationary that's why I prefer

standing up to be honest I really love

standing up so I prefer standing up when

I do the livestream who was first on the

live chat

Steve joins us but as I said today we

have something a little different

because we are outside in the garden and

I thought we would have some lovely

memories of our summer because it's been

a fantastic summer don't you think so

here we go we're going to start off our

summer memories with a wonderful video

that we did earlier in the year when I

decided to go on a lovely summer walk

mmm I fancy doing that right now to be

honest

a few days ago I was actually walking

through this very field here and if you

remember I promised that I would show

you the bloom of the wild garlic so as

you can see all of the wild garlic has

now come into bloom and hmm I really do

wish you could smell the aroma in the

air it smells very garlicky

filming in the woods on a summer's day

might look like a very enjoyable way to

pass the time

it might look like something that is

very pleasurable and relaxing however

there are some things you have to beware

of such as small obstacles hidden in the

undergrowth for example this tiny piece

of wood look this little piece of wood

it looks so innocent doesn't it however

if I were to step on this piece of wood

and if it were to roll underneath my

foot as I step onto it I could fall over

I might break an arm or a leg or even

worse my neck

if you were watching at the start of

today's livestream you would have seen

me standing in front of this lovely

field isn't it beautiful

I must say it really does feel as if

summer is in the air now because of this

this particular field is full of

rapeseed now this is something that I've

been showing you over the past couple of

weeks during my live streams and now we

can see it up close and personal

as I've mentioned before rapeseed is

used for making food oils and also for

making biofuels as well modern fuels

which are made from things that are

renewable so these plants every year

will grow and they can be harvested to

make biofuels it is something that has

become very popular just to show how

popular biofuels are nowadays many of

the fields in this area are full of

rapeseed which is good for the

environment but not very good news for

me because I suffer from hay fever every

single year I get terrible hay fever

which causes me to sneeze it makes my

eyes very itchy

in fact as I'm standing here now I can

feel my nose becoming very itchy I feel

as if I want to sneeze so there you can

see it the beautiful rapeseed growing

around the area in which I live many

people asking mr. Duncan where do you

live where do you normally broadcast

your live streams from normally I

broadcast from my little studio in Much

Wenlock which is situated in the county

of Shropshire

you know there's nothing I enjoy more on

a day like this than going for a wonder

the word wonder can have more than one

meaning it could also be spelt in

different ways there is wonder with a

and wonder with o wonder with a means to

roam around you roam around in a casual

way you wonder you wonder around the

field you wonder around the town and

then there is wonder spelt with an O

that particular wonder means to be

amazed by something something that is

amazing to think about is a wonder you

might say wonders of the universe or

wonders of nature so there are two

different types of wonder now I am going

for a wonder over there

doo-doo-doo-doo okay I'm not sure if

this is a good idea but so far things

aren't going too badly

we are having some lovely summer

memories today because we are coming

towards the end of summer

technically autumn has already started

here in the UK so that's the reason why

we are going to look back at some of

those magic moments from 2018 right here

on the livestream mr. Steve will be here

in around about five minutes I bet you

can't wait but the big question is how

is mr. Steve going to sit here with me

because it doesn't look as if there is

much room so I hope there is enough room

at this table for mr. Steve and also

myself as well we'll find out later on

we'll be talking about hotel words words

connected to staying in a hotel I will

give you a little example first of all

and there is one check-in check-in if

you want to find out what that means

so if I seem a little distracted now and

again it's because the flies are buzzing

think four weeks isn't a very long time

certainly if you are having problems

with your English you might find that

four weeks isn't long enough but my

advice would be to find out where your

weaknesses are so try to find out try to

work out what your actual weaknesses are

so the areas in which you think you have

a problem with your English and then you

can work on those but to be honest with

you for weeks but isn't a long time if I

was sir if I was going to be completely

I thought autumn starts around the 21st

of September well yesterday according to

the weather men and ladies it is now the

start of what they call meteorological

autumn so by their standards autumn has

already started although you'll be

pleased to hear that the leaves haven't

started falling off the trees just yet

so we still have a little bit of time to

go before the leaves start to fall but

today Wow

well today doesn't feel like autumn to

be honest it feels like we are still it

feels like July today to be honest it

feels just like July so we'll have a

look at another summer memory before mr.

Steve arrives what shall we have a look

at now oh I know what I know what we can

look at do you remember

not very long ago when we went to visit

a special place in Wales

mr. Steve has been working out our

finances for the year and apparently

because of all the money that I've

earned from YouTube this year from the

generous people at YouTube and of course

Google we can actually invest our money

into something quite amazing Oh mr.

Duncan I've been looking at luxury

yachts luxury luxury yachts just for you

and me mr. Duncan imagine the fantastic

lessons that we can produce onboard our

hundred foot luxury yacht wow it sounds

amazing we go to Monaco we can sail all

around the world on our luxury yachts

all the profits that you've made from

your YouTube channel this year mr.

Duncan anyway there's a nice boat yard

here I've been to speak to the owners

they've got a fantastic yacht for sale

or whoo okay would you like to see it

yes I would I'm getting very excited

it's right behind you mr. Duncan

I let me show you what do you think it

just needs a bit of paint that is not a

luxury yacht

we can afford mr. Duncan I've just

realized it's all we can afford

I'm sorry I've just suddenly realized we

are not making as much money from this

YouTube channel as I thought because

Google and YouTube don't pay as much

money and how fortunately there's an

walk at that hill and make another

lesson straight away and then we'll be

millionaires that's a nice idea a very

interesting idea so now we are going for

a walk up that hill over there and I

have a feeling it's going to be very

oh hello there we are on a lovely walk

today we're taking a nice walk but we

are having a little rest at the moment

mr. Steve has just finished eating his

peanut bar there we go there's an energy

bit of energy because we always like to

take care of some food with us and have

a nice rest don't we mr. Duncan look

what I've got here this is the

instruction it's a booklet on all the

walking trails at Lake Verne we that's

the place that we are at and that's the

most amazing thing about this area there

are so many places to actually walk

around it's huge look at all those

walking trails today we there are want

there are five walking trails that all

color-coded and today we are taking the

what do trail oh yeah that's great I

can't wait to see the subtitles for that

that's Welsh by the way and it's the red

route we're taking the red route the Red

Road danger if you are going to go in

any direction always follow the red

route but it says here this is a steady

climb and it gives stunning

hi views looking down on the lake at

access to the hills Moreland forests and

fields it says there's a moderately

steep hill moderately we've just come up

so we've walked for around about three

miles and I'm guessing we haven't got

much further to go let's have a look

there's just another six miles to go six

miles

I'm not going six miles when you're

trying to lose weight mr. Duncan look

this is what we've come on this walk for

to help you get fit and lose weight I am

losing weight see I haven't given him a

peanut Barb's get them all to myself

during this walk I have lost weight and

also the will to live well the only

right you're losing is because you keep

losing bits of equipment look what it

says here you see walking it gives you

some very inch some smart

pieces of advice before you set up on

your wall these are the things that you

must bear in mind you must think about

you must think about these things before

you go on a walk for example number one

we're strong shoes or walking boots

check check take that one off take warm

and a waterproof clothing oh I've got my

warm clothing Steve's got some warm

clothing I haven't look I've got a rain

poncho a rain poncho what's up what's a

poncho

it's a look there we go there's a

picture of a lovely lady yes thought you

described it it's a plastic waterproof

film covering that if we get caught in a

shower we put this poncho on which is

just sort of just covers you it's

basically a plastic bag plastic bag

there goes your head that goes over you

but normally a poncho is something you

wear loose over your body so you put it

over your head and then it just covers

your body if you if you remember in Star

Wars Luke Skywalker wore a poncho but

but apparently apparently most of the

scenes with de la

did with him wearing the poncho but

there are a couple of scenes in Star

Wars where Luke Skywalker is wearing his

poncho always have to get something in

about Star Wars it's so boring mister

dunne course anyway that's that touch

waterproof clothes watch out watch out

for service vehicles on forest track yes

it's very important I can't see any

service vehicles on that track so I

think we're all right for now so unless

they're electric we'll be able to hear

them keep on the roads and footpaths yes

on the road and footpath there is the

the lake is a drinking water reservoir I

are on the big Dam yes the big Dam and

there are two uses and two spellings of

the word dam aren't the mr. Duncan that

is true first the thing we are standing

on right now is called a dam dam

something used for containing water

normally made from stone and there you

can see this dam is holding all this

water in this is the reservoir the dam

contains the water and there is another

use and spelling of the word Dam and

it's a form of exclamation a swear word

and expletive normally used when you get

very very angry about something damn I

missed my bus damn I'm late for work

want to go to the hotel and have

something to eat and you kept me out

ray-bans yeah they look great I won

these in a competition many years ago so

I didn't what he'd never have paid

120 euros for these but I won them in a

competition so I don't think they really

suit me better I wear them anyway who

would pay who would pay a hundred pounds

for sunglasses somebody would my

goodness people with lots of money

happened in China as well you see I used

to get some very strange offers from

people in China and it would appear that

the same thing is happening now here on

on my youtube channel lots of strange

office so someone wants to come here and

live with me for a while can I just say

in the most polite way I'm a frown much

I'm not having strangers coming coming

to live with me I will do anything for

enough money mr. Duncan QB you know that

it could well I know I speak for

yourself well you need some more

equipment for your studio so you know if

someone's offering is 10,000 pounds to

because our garden our garden isn't

level it slopes it slopes sort of

downwards so everything is at an angle

today so I have to now sit here for the

whole livestream at this very strange

Duncan I didn't mean in the garden I

meant inside in a controlled environment

okay well this is this is a kind of

controlled environment well that's where

anything could happen out here mr.

Duncan we get wildlife descending on

at any moment what there's a wasp's nest

just behind you which I discovered a few

weeks ago when I was gardening in fact I

got stung by a wasp yes and me but that

was a different was this one was from

the nest and I was clipping some bushes

and I musta trod on a nest and all these

wasps came out one of them stung me mr.

Duncan hey I loved the fact that you you

know that that wasn't the same wasp what

did you did you get his name or

something that what are we doing today

mr. dwell well as I mentioned earlier we

are looking at some lovely clips from

our summer do you remember a few weeks

ago there was a there was a special

event called the World Cup taking place

do you remember Steve I do indeed yes

and and of course we couldn't resist

doing something I'm just trying to see

the problem is I'm wearing my sunglasses

let me just take my sunglasses off how

would help oh that's better I can

actually see now not much better so oh

there it is yes though it is I found it

on my screen isn't this going well so do

you remember when we went into the

garden and we decided to have a game of

football well could you call it a game

of football well I suppose you could and

ah so many wonderful memories

learn the Russian alphabet then that is

about the Russian alphabet very

interesting because we don't lots of

your viewers out there know lots of

different languages hmm and I often

think that's very clever and they're

very good of them because really I will

we know a bit of French yes but we

haven't really learned any other

language you mean they are by lis

bilingual yes a lot of the people

watching as a bilingual or maybe even

trilingual some people are learning

French and German and English as well as

of course their own native language and

we're just talking about English so I

think you know we ought to to learn

something and I'd quite like to learn

Russian the the word that describes a

person that can speak many languages is

polyglot polyglot so a polyglot is a

person that can speak many different

languages and understand many different

languages so we will be having a little

look at Russian later on with mr. vodka

finally today we will find out how to

pronounce mister vodkas name properly

and of course as we said before we love

to have videos

from our viewers sent to us so that we

can play them on the live stream and

we've had quite a few this year mmm but

if anybody out there wants to send us a

somebody's noticed that I'm looking at

the cellphone the reason I'm doing that

is because I'm looking at the live chat

yes and we are we are outside in very

strange conditions so because of the

light and of course the sun is shining

90 million miles away I I really did

think that the Sun wouldn't be that

bright today because it's so far away

you see but it would appear that I'm

wrong because the Sun is bright in the

sky and it's causing one or two problems

one problem in particular is that we

because it's something we all do this

week you were staying in a hotel

I believe the hotel you was staying in

was very posh it was posh hotel very

posh in fact it was so posh apparently

if anyone's heard a famous footballer

David Beckham I think they have then his

wife posh posh and Becks as they call

them yes apparently they got married

there so so posh spice and David Beckham

got married at the hotel that Steve stay

that this week it was a work do a worked

of work were paying and they were

treating some of us to one night away

and then we had a meeting the next day

it was a very nice hotel so we thought

let's talk about words connected with

hotel yes and see if anybody else would

like to talk about that would like to

come up with any suggestions of anything

they would like to talk about connected

with hotel another thing of course you

could talk about or mentioned today is

what what was the worst hotel or the

best hotel you've ever stayed at or in

so maybe you have a nightmare story

about a terrible experience you have now

we have stayed it some terrible hotels

in London and some of them are awful so

don't think that all of the hotels in

London are lovely because they're not

trust me some of them are really really

terrible

now there is one evening in particular

that we got stuck in London we actually

missed the last train so we went to stay

at this small hotel and it was awful it

was so dirty and rundown everything was

terrible inside the person was was was

unfriendly so yes so if you do booked a

hotel in London please don't assume that

the hotel will be nice not all hotels in

London are lovely some of them are

rather awful excuse me

Education so you can use it very loosely

general term so school is any form of

Education you can be schooled and to

school someone is to teach them or teach

them a lesson so school is actually a

word that can be used in many ways

College is more specific so College

normally means further education so

amount of salary or income that somebody

should have that gives them the best

quality of life okay and they

established that in terms of UK money

around 65 to 70 thousand pounds was the

perfect amount of money to earn but so

when they looked at lots of people on

less money than that or more money than

that the people around sixty thousand

had the best quality of life okay so

below that people were struggling to pay

their bills and then when you've got to

around sixty thousand pounds which it's

quite a big income hmm you would just

you basically had everything that you

needed so you didn't have to worry about

paying for your mortgage or getting

quite a nice car saving for your future

paying for your children or becoming

homeless but if you started getting more

and more money hundred thousand hundred

and fifty two hundred that in itself

created more problems

quite often than it solved apparently

because you then started to have

problems with friends and family members

and she was suddenly earning a lot more

than them that creates problems then you

have you have to then worry about what

to do with this money yes where you

invest it and then if you start buying

bigger homes and flashing a car you're

then one more vulnerable people start no

to sing you might get robbed you might

get assaulted you know so more and more

money apparently creates more problems

than having all the same problems as

having less so there is a sweet spot

there is a sweet spot a sweet spot so

having too little money or not earning

enough has its own problems and also

earning a lot of money or having a large

amount of money or if you earn a large

amount of money that also has its own

problems but apparently there is a

perfect point and that's around 60,000

pounds a year

well I all I can say is I wish I wish I

was earning that I'm not even earning

half of that or even you even earning

1/10 of that oh isn't it so good even a

tenth of that but yes there is this that

if that is a lot of money but apparently

that's a perfect point yes so in euros

that would be I'm just wondering eighty

wondering how many people actually earn

get a lot of satisfaction from still

using these you know and not throwing

them away and just buying use yeah stuff

for the sake of it I think the thing I

want about is also filling your life

with things that are useless mmm so

maybe you buy things maybe you buy

handbags that's the one thing I can't

about going out and buying a handbag and

paying for probably meals as well at the

same time rooms and meals provided for

payment so you can have different types

of hotel mmm so you can have a spa hotel

Oh spa hotel a spa hotel no a spar is

normally some kind of natural water but

a spa hotel it normally is a hotel which

there we go so there is word that's okay

it's far hotel you can hold them up as I

talked about this so it's a hotel

usually more expensive it has a high

star rating it's probably four or five

star rating well that's another thing we

have to talk about there isn't it we can

do and their views you got facilities

around exercise keeping fit and also

maybe beauty treatments spa treatments

you go in and have a face facial or you

have your heads or your nails done a

facial or one type of hotel is this well

you know they they yeah they sort of

give you a massage

all the massages they massage your back

they do things to actually care for your

body to allow yourself to relax and a

lot of a lot of people like to go to spa

hotels and of course the hotels can

charge a lot more for those yes so a

resort hotel mr. Duncan is deals well it

may not be our

listen this is going very well so resort

hotels mr. Duncan tell it is a hotel

that is usually a large complex covers a

large area of ground and they might have

a particular theme or a specialization

for example in skiing so you might have

a ski resort hotel or you might have a

Golf Resort Hotel so golf hotels are

very common in the UK it's a hotel in a

large area of ground with its own Golf

Course hmm

it's slightly different to a holiday

resort which is an area that's very

popular where there are lots of hotels

yes whereas there is a specific phrase a

hotel resort which is that just one

hotel but it's like they've got there

might have their own skiing run or they

might have their own golf course I think

the word you're looking for is

self-contained so we'll all say that all

of the things are self-contained in one

hotel so everything you want to do is

self-contained you might actually say

Disneyland so Disney laughs that's a

resort Disneyland is a resort hotel it

because it has everything there

everything there you don't need to go to

anywhere anywhere else another place and

the theme is parks yes Oh glide but then

you might talk about holiday resort

which is the place where all the hotels

are or all of the hotels for those who

are going on holiday where they are

situated now I have one for this but you

can put that one up now mr. Duncan a

boutique hotel a boutique hotel now

these have become quite popular over the

last few years so it's really a small

stylish hotel in a trendy location and

it might have a very specific decor or

decoration within the hotel

in a fashionable or exclusive location

so it's a boutique oh it's a small quite

expensive stylish and it's quite people

like to say that they've been to a

boutique hotel yes oh we went to a boot

wasn't any old hotel it was a boutique

hotel so Boutique Hotel tends to give

you a more personal service everything

is is more personal and quite often they

are not very big hotels so they might

just have a handful of rooms and we

stayed at a very nice boutique hotel in

Turkey twice we've been there so that

was very nice very lovelace a boutique

hotel the next one is Motel I'm waiting

for mr. Duncan he's a bit slow a motel

which is basically with it that that's

actually short for Motor Hotel hmm so

it's a it's a hotel that tends to be

near a motorway Junction yes no it's

abbreviated it's abbreviated so its

Motor Hotel so a place where you will

drive your car you will spend the night

at the hotel and then you'll drive off

and continue your journey Motel quite

often in a town or a city you will get

motels as well they don't necessarily

have to be right by a motorway Junction

but in in a town or city they tend to be

cheaper hotels okay so a motel in a town

would be a cheaper hotel more basic

accommodation the thing also I've

noticed if if you watch movies where

maybe there is a criminal who is hiding

from the police quite often they will

end up staying at a small motel it's

some way you're driving a long way to

somewhere and it's such a long railway

you want to stopover overnight somewhere

and typically they tend to be on main

particularly in America they're all on

the on the big Main

in this country with their just off

motorway Junction if we were traveling

to Scotland hmm for example it would be

probably a six to eight hour road trip

you might not want to do that in one day

but to cut break the journey up you

would say to motel which will be just

off a motorway Junction and it would be

an expensive way to to have a a break

yeah so there are many come June there

are many chains there are many companies

now that offer this type of stopover or

stay over so yes you find them quite a

lot now on the motorway so maybe there

is a service area where you can park

your car and get some food and quite

often nearby there will also be a hotel

so if you decide that you want to spend

the night there you want to have a rest

you can stay in the hotel the motel

having said that we don't call them

motels here in the UK we call them still

hotels I know we do we do can we do that

reduced oh we do for the motel sometimes

I've looked it up it's a Timken hotel a

motor hotel go there so I'm sure the

neighbors are enjoying that the cows are

coming by the way hello cows right next

one now I haven't got one for this one

and in you can write it down if you want

an I double em I double em and in thanks

and in it's a small hotel typically out

in the country somewhere but it's just

for overnight accommodation and it tends

to be in a public house or a pub mmm so

it's slightly different to a motel which

a motor would be more set out like a

hotel but an inn tends to be a moto is a

properly purpose-built hotel where as an

inn might be like a public house has

been come with some rooms at the above

the pub that have been turned or create

turned into into accommodation yeah to

stay at so maybe that may be the purpose

of the building isn't to actually be a

hotel there

some rooms above it that you can use to

stay in and they tend to be out in the

country in whereas a motel is near a

motorway Junction typically an inn is

out in the country somewhere so you'll

be on secondary roads and another

interesting thing is that this is the

very old term for hotel so in the past

you would only have Inns yes so in in is

a very old word it goes back maybe 200

years at least and you probably wouldn't

stay there long term you'd only probably

stay for one night then you'd move on

somewhere else so bed-and-breakfast so

we were bed-and-breakfast is a term

which is very commonly used chicken in

the UK and it's just accommodation

usually in somebody's house that they've

converted a room and it's for you to

stay quite cheaply and basically just

have somewhere to stay for the night or

a few nights but they're only going to

but they will provide you with breakfast

in the morning as the name suggests you

get bed and breakfast sometimes hotels

their rates they will say that their

rates include bed and breakfast and then

you've got to pay extra for an evening

meal but if we're talking specifically

about a type of accommodation here bed

and breakfast

you will see that advertised a lot for

example where we living here there are

lots of bed and breakfasts because

people want to visit tourist locations

you finally very commonly in tourist

locations or in towns where people have

been anywhere where people are visiting

and there they want to visit their

family or the visiting other people they

don't want an evening meal they only

want a night a cheap night to stay

somewhere and get some breakfast in the

morning and many people we could do it

here we could convert a room into a

bedroom and advertise bed and breakfast

and we could get people to come and stay

here and they would pay to stay

overnight I had a lot of people in the

village do that I couldn't do that I I

don't want strange people sleeping in my

house

you know to be honest as I said earlier

because I had an offer or should I say a

request from someone to come in come and

stay here we can charge them

bed-and-breakfast but we they have

nowhere to sleep what are they going to

do I think are they going to squeeze in

with us well they're working in a tent a

tent in the garden in the middle I gotta

sleep in the middle are they oh that's

bed and breakfast and it's quite a eat

quite a lot of people well into a lot of

people but it's a common way for people

to generate income if they've got spare

rooms in their house and they're in an

ideal location yet near the sea in a

town a city Oh tourist area just let a

room out and have some income through

the summer months well actually there

there are a couple of bed and breakfast

places near us that's what I just said

mister did not very far away so my

mother stayed at one so so maybe the

point I'm trying to make is maybe

someone could actually visit and they

could stay nearby and then maybe they

could get some English lessons and they

could pay me although it sounds like a

very expensive way to get English

lessons so first of all you have to pay

for the plane ticket then you have to

pay for the hotel and maybe the

transportation as well to the

bed-and-breakfast so it sounds like a

very expensive way of learning English

to me interesting they've been some

interesting comments somebody was asking

about the the chain of hotels called

holiday emo yes very big very big but

the as somewhat as Cara Jessa says it's

not an inn they just call it a Holiday

Inn yeah just the name of the company so

in either in as you said is an

old-fashioned word for hotel that's it

but today we would use the word so it's

harking back to the past yeah it's just

that the chain is called Holiday Inn but

they're they're quite big hotels it's

not an inn as we were described today's

a small somewhere above a public house

out in the country and it's fairly basic

accommodation it's a brand so Holiday

Inn is actually the brand the brand's

name so it's it doesn't mean it's an inn

of hotels so Holiday Inn is just the

name of the company yes and they're just

using the old word for hotel in their

in other people's houses well that's

and then you have a glimpse into the

somebody's house and you get to know the

family and people go and go back year

after year quite often to visit and they

will come and stay there as if it's a

hotel so anyone so not not at not a

place that actually is a hotel or a bed

in breakfast but anyone any person can

actually have their house used as a bed

can do it through companies a bit like a

new before taxes then yes it's a bit

like uber for hotels so anyone's house

can be used as a hotel room you put your

net you've you you you sign up somewhere

register yes and then write okay I'm not

hanging you covered in legal never mind

there are lots and lots of Oh trust me

there have been many problems with this

service I can imagine people have come

back and they found that their house has

been completely destroyed inside so yes

there are there are a lot of horror

stories and that's another reason why I

don't want people staying here who I

don't know it's not happening right so

well guest house have you written any of

GuestHouse so that is similar to B&B but

it's a separate it's a building separate

from the main house so somebody might

have so if somebody wants B&B

bed-and-breakfast they've got a room

within their own house that you will pay

them to stay in and they'll give you

breakfast but a guesthouse

it means it's slightly better than a B&B

it means they've got a separate house

away from the main house and it might be

a lot smaller but it might have

self-contained facilities it might have

a kitchen but they've got a separate

house away from the main house and

that's got a guesthouse and it would

normally cost more than a bit

bed-and-breakfast yes and it might be

self catering another thing to bear in

mind also is if you go on holiday in the

UK you can stay at one of the coastal

towns and quite often you can live in

someone's house and they will have maybe

two or three rooms put aside now we can

call those bed-and-breakfast hotels or

we can call them guest houses so a guest

house can be a place that you stay in

that looks like someone's house but

there are some rooms that are put aside

for you to stay in so yes so this word

can be used in quite a few ways in fact

expensive for you then you can stay in a

hostel which is a very cheap

accommodation very basic very basic and

sometimes you would even camp there

as well out and out in a field

have to share rooms with people who you

might not have a room to yourself a

hostel and youth hostel Inge is a very

popular thing to do when you're young

I've done it you cycle or you walk and

there's a book with all these youth

hostels in all around the country in you

you travel from one to the other cheap

accommodation and you get to see and

talk to lots of different people you

never have great fun

so that's hostel or a youth hostel youth

hostels obviously for young people but

there are hostels for people who haven't

got much money maybe lost their home and

they want somewhere to live

yeah and they can stay in a hostel which

is very very basic accommodation so in

its generic form the word hostel just

means very basic accommodation and quite

often you will have to share the

accommodation with two or three or even

more people at the same time which which

doesn't sound sound like fun to me well

I suppose it depends who you're sharing

with self-catering we've talked about

self catering slightly remember we

talked about the guest house but if you

if you go go self catering it means that

there is a separate room for you to do

your own cooking and if there's normally

if it's a guest house so that's a room

separate or building separate from the

main house that will have its own

kitchen showering for surges and things

like that and it means that you can cook

your own food again it's an expensive

way of of going on holiday you're not

going to go out for evening meals you're

going to even do your own brick it's

probably cheaper than bed-and-breakfast

actually what might be the same price

but at least you can cook your own

evening meals you can cook all your

meals there and save lots of money

basically you take care of yourself you

take care of yourself so you're just

paying for the room and the facility

camping that's the other one camping

we're getting more and more basic you

see what I did was I started with the

expensive ones and I've worked down to

the more cheaper forms of accommodation

so if you are into camping I know I love

camping

there is nothing I enjoy more at the

weekend than going out camping I love to

camp in the village I love to camp in

the churchyard

I left a camp in the cafe although I

think that mr. Steve is talking about a

different type of another canvas camping

I'm talking about a tent I'm talking

about tent pegs I'm talking about

rucksacks and cycling and going on

holiday with just a rucksack on your

back which has your tent and then you go

from one campsite to the other and there

you are in the field with lots of other

people you have to put your tent up and

there's a there might be a little cafe

nearby or you might do your own cooking

on on a camping stove and there would be

shared toilet facilities probably as

well so as I see camping it's it's it's

basic temporary accommodations yeah

that's it very basic but of course we've

also got which is quite popular and

always has been in the UK caravanning ah

caravanning yes so that the - that

really is you've just got a a cat well a

caravan is like a separate vehicle that

you hitch or hook onto the back of your

car on and you can sleep in it cooking

it and you just drive with that Caravan

to a camp to a caravan site and it means

you basically taking your home with you

yeah it's a mobile home on wheels

yes so there are two types there's the

caravan that's separate and you attach

it to the car and pull it behind you or

of course nowadays you can get the whole

vehicle and like a Motorhome a Motorhome

or a mobile home and it's it's all one

thing

very popular in the United States so

gigantic and they're huge so the ones

here are quite small but the ones in the

United States they are literally houses

on wheels they're converted vans or

lorries in this country the roads aren't

big enough to accommodate large vehicles

like that but when when I was growing up

in the 70s and 80s let's say the

nineteen seventies caravanning was

incredibly popular in the UK not so

popular now but the road used to be

clogged up because caravans are slow

because if you're towing this Caravan

behind your car yeah then you can only

go at a certain speed and my father used

to get very annoyed in the summer months

because the roads were clogged up with

caravans locked up everyone seemed to

own a caravan I can't stand those

clogged roads and we had quite a lot of

my clothes my parents had one we had

many Caravan holidays they're not very

pleasant because it's a small space and

here with your family all cooped up in

this very small space you can't get away

from them and you tend to have lots of

arguments yeah so you're in a very

enclosed space and that always happens

anyway when you go on holiday with your

family there's always an argument of

some sort I'm pretty sure I bet you have

been on a holiday with your family and I

bet at some point there has been an

argument I'm a Brady yes you can use

caravans in the UK it's perfectly legal

people keep them on their driveways at

home and they get them out in the summer

months and tow them behind the car to a

campsite and of course you can hire them

yes you can hire them of course they've

never got their own toilets and showers

in them I I've stayed in I've served in

many caravans can't say they were

particularly pleasant holidays you know

but it's not too bad renew young nothing

you were with your family so that sort

of different types of accommodation okay

super SuperDuper we may we have well be

having a breakdown than afterwards I've

got lots of words we are having a tea to

the hotels themselves we are having a

little break we're going to have another

we're wrapped up in in woollen winter

but it's actually very cold so I've got

the beach towel and what have you got

mr. Duncan I have my Spade so I can dig

in the sand because we are on a sandy

beach and I have my bucket as well my

little bucket so I can put the sand into

the bucket and I can build a little

sandcastle whoo I've got the same

matching I've got the blue ones you've

got the red ones so are we going to

start building sandcastles mr. Duncan

I'm all excited I think mr. Steve is

very eager even though the wind is

blowing it is quite windy on the beach

we are very close to the sea we are on

the Welsh coast in a place called a

bedevi it's very nice normally but

unfortunately it's a little cool and

quite windy what else have you got there

Steve I read a beach towel yeah which

I'm now using to keep warm with do you

hike

do you like Steve's beach towel I'm

using it as a scarf to keep warm so

let's start building some sandcastles

oh I do like to be beside the seaside oh

I do like to be beside the sea all over

the UK during the summer months people

come and they visit the seaside they go

to the beach I don't know what it is

about being near the sea the sights the

sounds the weather and also the fresh

air to be honest with you there is a lot

of fresh air around today

because it's so windy and look at the

sea

isn't it beautiful in fact I think mr.

Steve is going to go into the water for

a paddle you paddle in the water you

splash around in the sea

all that splashing around in the sea has

made mr. Steve feel very hungry so he

decides to go to the local chip shop

there's nothing like a bag of fish and

chips

piping hot from the fryer with extra

salt and vinegar mr. Steve appears to be

enjoying his chips hmm delicious do you

know what this bird is it's a seagull a

very common bird that can often be found

near the seaside or on the coast we

decided to see what would happen if we

threw some of the chips on the ground

needless to say the result was chaos you

will often see seagulls at the seaside

so our day trip to the seaside is almost

at an end as we walk off together into

the sunset

I know one thing I could really really

eat some chips right now

we are going to take a look at the

Russian alphabet in a few moments but

mr. Steve you have something for us as

well I do got some more words associated

with hotels and staying away interesting

comments have been a nice comment here

from Francesca who has said that she has

lived in a hostel ok in London for the

last year and it's been the best time of

her life because hostels you get to know

a lot of people in hostels because

although the accommodation is relatively

inexpensive compared to a hotel which is

quite impersonal in a hostel I bet you

Francesca's got I've got to know a lot

of people and we've been able to

practice your English very well so yes

that's a hostel so do you want me to go

through some more words I would not like

to stay in a hostel I like my privacy I

like to lock my door of the hotel room

and be on my own and I think you can

have your own you can do everything

privately I like my own bathroom as well

I don't like to share bathrooms with

other people so sometimes when you stay

at a hotel you might have to have a

bathroom that lots of other people use

and sometimes they are a little dirty Oh

mr. Duncan you too fussy if you're not

staying away somewhere particularly

somebody if you were gonna if I was

going to stay in London what I was going

to stay in in a foreign country in the

capital city somewhere okay for a long

period of time because I was studying

you wouldn't want you couldn't stay in

the hotel every too expensive so a

hostel would be an ideal place to stay

for that year and you'll get to know

lots of people so right so you've

decided you want to stay in a hotel okay

there are lots of words and phrases that

we can use connected with that okay then

we need to get through two or three of

these and then we'll go through the

Russian alphabet with one of our lovely

lovely viewers and then we'll have some

more

so right give us the first one first one

then is that you when you

you've decided where you want to stay

you phone them up or you go on the

internet and you make a booking a

reservation or a booking it's the same

thing yes if that hotel you phone up and

there's no rooms left they will say that

it's fully booked

okay so booked up so you want to make a

reservation you want to actually

reserved a room booked a room make a

booking reserved a room for a particular

date so that's that one some hotels will

ask you to pay a deposit hmm or if they

don't they might ask you for credit-card

details

all right so that if you don't turn up

they'll have a cancellation policy and

they'll charge you on your credit card

yes if you don't turn up for the

accommodation or cancel it yeah within a

period of time this happens sometimes so

maybe you booked the hotel room you

reserved it but then you can't actually

use the room but they will still charge

you a small amount of money to say that

you know we reserved the room we could

have given that room to someone else yes

sometimes for example if you if you are

going on holiday and you booked it six

months in advance or a hotel they might

you might get all your money back if you

cancel it within say five months but if

you say cancelled it within a week you

might have to pay half the fees hmm or

if you cancel it the night before you

might tell you have to pay a hundred

percent of the fees because it means

redo the hotel could have rebooked that

room yes had you had you told them in

advance so quite often if you're staying

at a hotel then you will usually get

breakfast mmm faithful and they call

that that's a complimentary breakfast

yes so it's included in the price it's

included in you're already paid for it

but it's complimentary so it's it's

there within the price you might also

particularly in the UK this is very

common

you will get complimentary tea and

coffee in the room now in a lot of

hotels outside the UK this is not common

practice but in the UK when you stay in

the hotel in the UK or even a

bed-and-breakfast anywhere you would

virtually always expect to have tea and

coffee facilities in your room and you

usually get some peanuts or some

biscuits as well so that's because we

all love tea in this country if you went

away you wouldn't want to pay for tea

you and no one no UK person would expect

to pay for tea and coffee you know in

their room in a hotel but most hotels

abroad or certainly a lot of them do

charge extra for this it's not a

standard thing but it is in the UK it's

interesting because this leads on to one

of the most annoying things about

staying in hotel rooms sometimes you

have to be very careful because what

they do is they give you a refrigerator

in the room full of drinks oh yes

and you have to be very careful because

the drinks in that particular place they

will charge you for and they will often

charge you a lot of money so maybe you

are feeling thirsty in the night and you

want to drink you take a drink from the

fridge

and they call this the minibar the

minibar

because besides soft drinks there are

also alcoholic drinks and they charge a

lot of money for those so that is one of

the things I don't like about staying in

hotels sometimes they will have all of

these lovely things to tempt you and

then you drink what may be some of the

the orange juice or maybe you have a

bottle of beer and then when you look at

your bill the bill is very high and you

think why why have you charged me so

much for this and they say you used the

minibar very expensive and the mini bars

are very clever now

you used to have to write to the maid

came round the next morning to look into

the bar to determine what you've used

but now they're all got sensors in the

bottom so if you even if you take

anything out of it it's automatically

that they know it the reception and that

you automatically get charged so it's

all computer-controlled yes so quite

often things can be complimentary as

well for example you might want an iron

okay you might want an iron in your room

and quite often in the UK or travelers

hotels there will be an iron because you

might be going out and you might your

clothes might be all creased from being

in the suitcase but I have been to

hotels where you have to pay to have an

iron and actually charge you or you have

to phone at the reception and get them

to bring one to your rooms and sometimes

they have they have what they call a

trouser press so you put the trousers in

a big machine and it closes and it will

put a nice crease in your trousers or

maybe you are going to wear a lovely

skirt and you want to have it nice and

flat and ironed another phrase which we

haven't used is if you have staying and

staying somewhere hotel or anywhere else

and you get one meal okay they normally

call that half bored half bored okay

what does that say on there that well

that's a complement always interest so

if you get the breakfast along with the

accommodation that's half bored

what does bored mean that's the food

okay then so if you full board means

that you get all your meals everything

included a half board can mean sometimes

breakfast and lunch time but full board

definitely means you get literally all

your meals provided full board you get

the room you get all the meals you

probably have to pay extra for alcohol

but full board means every meals

provided yes you quite often hear the

phrase bed and board yes

so bed and board it means a place to

sleep and something to eat actually I

think even full board I think you don't

yes I think you get all your meals

provided

yes dinner lunch and evening me a full

board means that you get everything all

of the meals that you require breakfast

lunch and evening meal or maybe just

breakfast and evening meal and I think

get half board is breakfast and then

maybe lunch okay so when you're booking

a room you might want a single room or

you might want a double room so the only

difference there is a single means that

are single beds in the room but there

could be two single beds separated so

that if people like friends are staying

yes together or maybe a married couple

that don't like each other anymore but

normally you would book a double room

which means one big double bed obviously

if you're married but a single room

which could contain one single bed or

two single beds it just refers to the

size of the bed yes so it means you can

stay with a friend and you've got your

own bed in the same room but it's

cheaper because you're only having to

pay for one room what I didn't

understand any of that

okay I'll say it again no no don't

please don't say it again please don't

say it again double room double bed

single can refer to one bed or two

single beds in the room a double room

can refer to also two single beds I

suppose no oh okay then so a double room

is a double bed where two people or two

people can sleep inside clay in the bed

yes the single room okay before you

carry on okay I just do one more no

because that then stops at an

interesting point Oh does it yes it

better do you might want a book if

you're staying say you're taking your

parents or your children away we do to a

hotel don't and you want them to be

nearby

you might book an adjoining room which

is a room to say you've booked two rooms

next door to each other in the hotel but

there's a door that goes from one to the

other to save you having to go outside

into the corridor you could do with some

diagrams for this an adjoining room it

means you've got the room next door but

it's connected with a door inside so you

don't have to go outside to get to the

negative so you can look after you check

I've stayed at hotels before where it's

been a single but there it's been a book

just one room but there has been this

door and you worry oh I wonder where

that you know is it locked can the

people from the other room come through

but they're often booked out of single

rooms but if you booked it the adjoining

room as well it just means it you can

have your children staying next door

your parents and you can just wander

between both rooms in that way I need a

little drink which is good job we're

stopping mr. Duncan I hope I've spelt

this right but I think I believe that's

that's adjoining adjoining I believe

that's the spelling it's not a word I

use very often adjoining throw a d in

there now add joining somebody can tell

us add add joining so my next set of

words are to do with yes when we're in

the hotel okay but who wants to learn

the Russian alphabet I do okay

through these very quickly right hotel

hotel lobby that's the large area as you

go through the front door of the hotel

the lobby so the front door of the hotel

you walk in and the first thing you see

is the lobby and the first thing you do

is you know you go to the reception or

the front desk and you check in check a

check in give them all your details your

address email number credit card details

do you want to

a paper in the morning do you want an

alarm call in the morning do you want a

book the meal for the evening what they

tell you what Tom breakfast is is do all

the sort of things that you would expect

when you book it the other thing to

remember of course is you may have

reserved the room already so when you go

there you just say I believe you have a

room reserved for me and then they will

ask what your name is normally your

surname or your family name and then you

will say whatever and that's it they

will say oh yes we can see that you have

reserved one room for tonight we did

that earlier oh well I'm doing it now

because that's what you do when you go

to the reception so there is more than

one thing you can actually book the room

at the reception if you haven't reserved

the room if you haven't reserved the

room or you can go there if you have

already reserved the room and you need

to check in so you have much time to fit

in so yes I'm just trying to explain

this is a very important point so

whatever you are doing before you can

actually go and stay in the room you

have to check in at reception check in

at reception now you may have baggage oh

I've got baggage just me or luggage they

both mean the same thing really and

they'll be heavy probably bulky and you

may not want to take them to your room

yourself the room might be a long way

away and if you don't want to take the

luggage to your room yourself then there

is somebody in the hotel that will do

that for you it's called the bellboy

really the bellboy bellboy that's a bit

sexist so they will or bell girl but

it's typically a man because you have to

be strong to carry those bags usually do

they have Bell girls not generally

because they'd have to be very strong

because you have to obviously have big

muscles to carry these large heavy bags

around they don't usually give that task

to a woman and what women can have

muscles can't like they can but I've

never seen a Bell girl in a hotel I've

never only seen bellboy

exactly they need to be strong that's

not being sexist that's just been

factual and then of course the trouble

is if you do accept the services of a

bellboy to take your luggage to your

room

or again they will usually expect a tip

that's embarrassing really

so if you don't want to have to hand

over a tip or some money to the bellboy

then carry your own luggage to your room

because you you must give a little bit

of money to the bellboy for the extra

service that he offers yes whether it's

carrying your banks or or something else

in the UK it's very um it's very

uncommon for people to use a bellboy you

usually take your own luggage to your

room but when you go on holiday quite

often you're sort of hassled a bit and

they will always someone will always

carry the bags to your room for you they

won't let you do it yourself because

they want the tip they will force you

almost to have your bags carried so then

you have to give a tip but it doesn't

happen in the UK so if you have arrived

by car and you don't want to park your

car yourself you can just turn up

outside the hotel entrance hand the keys

over to the valet valet valet and that

is a person who will then park your car

for you well they will park your car for

you and then when you're ready to leave

they'll come in bring it back out but as

I understand that this is normally at

very posh hotels very posh hotels

usually yes and like like I don't know

like the the Hilton in London or maybe

the Dorchester in London so maybe they

have a valet there there's also someone

you've forgotten also somebody also if

you stay in a hotel and they haven't got

their own car park nearby often they'll

do that for you so we've now got the

concierge concierge it sounds very

French to me and that is the person that

you go to normally just by the reception

there might be more than one concierge

and they typically look after your

baggage so

if you've arrived before your room is

ready then you would hand your bags into

the concierge they would give you a

ticket and then when your room is ready

you can then pick it up later with with

your ticket or if you'll have to check

out of the hotel it normally it was sort

of 10 11 o'clock in the morning but you

might want to go somewhere else and pick

your bags up later you can hand your

bags into the concierge and pick them up

later they will also book taxes for you

and a book tours so if you're living in

a city you want to go on a tour you

would go to the concierge for that oh of

course you could go to the reception as

well there we go there's always somebody

who looks after your room keeps your

room clean that's the maid or

housekeeping housekeeping housekeeping

so if you want any more towels or we've

run out of soap or your complimentary

tea you would call the maid or

housekeeping and they would come and and

refresh you in that way you might want

room service if your don't want to go

out for a meal or you don't want to go

down for breakfast in the morning

or for an evening meal or you just fancy

something to eat and you don't want to

leave the hotel room you could call room

service and they will bring it to your

room

for you at a cost that's it

when you've enjoyed whatever you're

doing in the hotel for whatever reason

you're there you might be seeing the

sights and sounds around the city that

you will be time to leave so you then

check out and we don't mean committing

suicide we mean you are leaving the

hotel so you go to the reception desk

and you say ready to leave you pay your

bill and you make sure you've left

everything you've cleared everything out

of the room normally you have to be out

by a certain time or they charge you

extra yes so actually it so checkout is

the end of your stay you tell them that

that's it I'm going now I'm leaving the

hotel and then you pay your bill you

check out of course as Steve just

pointed out if you check out it can also

be a slang term for commit suicide we

don't
