well that was interesting i hope you can hear me and i hope you are receiving us all loud

and clear it is myself and also mr steve will be coming as well a little bit later on i

hope you can hear me clearly we've had some technical problems i know what you're going

to say mr duncan we can't see you we can't hear you but i am here now i i must apologise

something went wrong

i have a feeling it might be my fault but i don't think it is to be honest anyway we

are here finally together again yes it is english addict coming to you live from the

birthplace of english which just happens to be oh my goodness slap my thigh it's england

please someone help me now one of the problems doing this by yourself is if something goes

wrong if if you have a technical problem then unfortunately there is only one person who

can put it right and that is unfortunately me so when something does go wrong i have

to rush around and try to fix it so that's what i've been doing over the past few minutes

just a moment i have to put my glasses on i have my my normal glasses but i must wear

my reading glasses just a moment i will be back with you

oh yes someone said doing this is easy can i just tell you now it is not easy it might

be one of the hardest things in the world to actually do so this isn't easy it looks

easy and yes i know i make it look easy but trust me this is very difficult especially

when all of the systems in your computer suddenly stop working as you begin your live stream

well i'm pretty sure there is no one out there watching hello is there anyone there i hope

so i've gone to a lot of trouble today to come outside and present my normal or should

i say almost normal live stream it's a lovely day the only problem today is it's very windy

unfortunately we have a lot of wind blowing all over the place but everything else seems

to be all right not too bad thank you very much even though i have a feeling my gazebo

but i suppose the good news is there are no lawn mowers there is no noisy machinery to

again i know i keep saying hello to you but i am in a state of slight confusion at the

moment because i had to do lots of things normally it takes me an hour to prepare all

of the equipment so i had to do all of it in around about two minutes because everything

stopped working so i hope you will understand my predicament oh i like that word if you

have a predicament it means you have a difficult situation a situation that you have to try

and solve or sort out we have a predicament something we have to sort out unfortunately

yes mr steve will be here a little bit later on at around about five past three because

unfortunately

we had a slight technical problem and also we have oh we have also the sentence game

coming up today for those wondering where the sentence game is it will be here don't

worry it is a lovely day outside even though it's a little bit chilly apparently over the

next few days it's going to get cooler and i think next weekend we are going to have

some rain the rain is going to return next week because we have had a very dry april

i don't know what the weather's been like where you are but here it's been lovely it's

been really nice we have had one of the driest april months in history can you believe it

even drier than when the earth was first formed we have flags of the world as well coming

up in around about 10 minutes that should that should really confuse everyone i think

i think i think everyone is going to be very confused i am definitely confused today we

have lots of things to look at and i'm trying now to find it on the screen see we have mouth

and tongue idioms now there is a reason for this you may be aware that during the week

i have not been very well in fact for quite a few days i have had a slight physical problem

i know what you're going to say mr duncan we know you have lots of problems both physical

and

otherwise

however this is a big however during the week i have been suffering i have been in such

pain a few days ago i managed to bite the tip of my tongue i please don't ask me how

i did it but i did so i bit into my food but instead of biting my food i actually bit into

my tongue and during the past few days it became a little bit infected and also it became

swollen and very painful and so last wednesday i couldn't do my live stream last wednesday

because it was so painful i couldn't eat i couldn't speak i couldn't do anything with

my mouth unfortunately so it was a little bit annoying very annoying indeed so we have

mouth and tongue idioms coming up later on as a way of celebrating my little problem

that i had during the week mr steve will be here in a few minutes don't worry he is coming

up we also will be looking at the queen's english now quite often you will hear people

mention this they will say the queen's english what exactly is the queen's english and what

does it refer to so whenever we talk about the queen's english we are talking about the

way certain people use english and there are certain words that you might hear people use

and very often they will refer to those words as the queen's english some people also say

received pronunciation as well r p so when we talk about received pronunciation what

we are actually talking about is a way of pronouncing words or talking and maybe something

that you've actually learned to do so maybe you have been taught how to speak in a certain

way some people call it posh english now i have an accent a lot of people don't believe

this but i actually do have an accent it's true so i don't really have received pronunciation

because i do have an accent so it would be unfair to say that i have received pronunciation

because i don't the queen's english we will be looking at that a little bit later on oh

we've had a lot of lovely moments of nature we have something very interesting happening

at the moment right outside the window at the front of the house would you like to have

a look here it is

nesting in the tree right outside our window there is a pigeon in fact there are two pigeons

and they are building a nest right outside the window so there you can see the female

is inside the nest and in a moment you will see the male the male at the moment is bringing

little pieces of wood and there he is hello oh what's oh what are you doing stop stepping

on me get off why why are you stepping on me that looks very uncomfortable i must say

that does not look very comfortable at all

so at the moment we have a little nest that is being built right outside the window two

pigeons i'm not sure if there will be any eggs at the moment there are no eggs at least

i can't see any anyway but hopefully there will be

some chicks

oh get off me get off i must admit that looks very uncomfortable that does not look very

comfortable that is not a comfortable nest

so that is what is happening at the moment outside by my window at the front of the house

we go we might show this twice today here is a squirrel that decided to treat itself

to some of my bird seed however the bird's seed was not on the bird feeder it was actually

in the container that i used when i'm carrying the bird seed around two

and

there it was a little visitor that came to my garden during the week naughty squirrel

naughty naughty very naughty indeed

did you see that i have decided to put my coat on because it's freezing cold i don't

know why it does it does look like the weather is lovely today look at the front of the house

so at the front of the house everything is looking lovely and there you can see mr steve

in the distance what is steve doing we will find out a little bit later on what mr steve

has been up to over the past few days so we had a little problem today with our computer

and the software and everything it all went wrong so i do apologize for that mr steve

will be with us in a few moments oh my goodness i have to be honest with you it is absolutely

freezing i didn't realize the wind was going to be so cold today it's freezing cold i can't

believe it i'm putting my coat on that's better oh dear

better than i've been doing unfortunately because we had some technical problems can

i've had an email from belarusia i am glad to know that your wound is healing yes my

tongue is feeling much better thank you very much i was a little worried about that on

sunday i will be cooking during the live stream yes i know you love food you are right i do

kind of pasta filled with mashed potatoes fried onions and bacon and then it is boiled

i love the sound of that that sounds fantastic my brother ricardo and his family are going

to have lunch with me and i like cooking very much thank you belarusia if you are watching

hello hello everyone welcome mr duncan to my show i mean welcome me to my your show

yes it's my show well i think it's my show i'm not sure because at the start of today's

live stream everything went wrong all of the equipment went wrong everything crashed the

computer went wrong the software went wrong it's all all right now mr duncan the only

thing that was working all right was me that's unusual though isn't it yes it's quite unusual

to you that's broken and the equipment is fine well it's true because i have been broken

during this week i i've had a a swollen tongue because i bit my tongue a few days ago and

and it became very very sore and painful in fact it became so bad i couldn't eat can you

imagine what that was like not being able to eat food yeah but what was so wonderful

was that you couldn't speak either peace and quiet for days steve what was it steve was

enjoying that he really was enjoying the fact that it was peaceful and quiet because i couldn't

speak however guess what i can speak now so there

well mr duncan are we going to extend today's lesson i have no idea i'm still fuming i have

to be honest i was a little angry because i i spent all day i got up at seven o'clock

this morning to start preparing today's live stream he did seven o'clock and now it's three

o'clock in the afternoon and i haven't stopped and then as soon as two o'clock came i had

technical problems yes we know mr duncan but what i'm saying steve no what i'm well i'm

telling you a story is it a sad story what i'm saying is i've worked very hard to do

this and then my anger i could feel my anger growing yes well you know when everything

went wrong let's just carry on mr duncan it's all working now okay i'll remember that you

know the show must go on when you're having a problem the show must go on i will remember

that so what are we talking about today well first of all first of all steven your problem

no okay then what i'm trying to tell you

is that it can i tell you now come on okay then i'm in a very bad mood at the moment

it's windy which means sudden sudden blasts of air from strange directions and i don't

a whole load of wind from nowhere and it goes away well that that is there mr steve sometimes

get gets a load of wind from down there can be gusty in the house shall i go and collect

is this is a but that's not a technical issue that's like a mechanical issue wonder oh i

can see it i'll just go and get it mr doing yes see i i did put something on top i put

this piece of metal on top of the paper so it didn't blow away and the first thing steve

did was pick this up and then it blew away i know but i have to you know have it here

ready to make notes but i haven't seen anything interesting yet so you haven't even told us

what elude means allude if you if you allude to something it means you're sort of giving

hints yes as to something that you're talking about you might not give all the details but

you're sort of giving hints and little bits of information yes so you're not being explicit

you are eluding you are suggesting something without saying directly yes

or referred to maybe but yes uh i have been in the garden in fact i've i'm quite excited

because yesterday excited yesterday we we bought a new tree and steve has been busy

in the garden would you like to see the tree here it is here is the tree that mr steve

first person that guesses it's a kiss it's on it's on the screen so

there we go look at that mr steve has bought a new tree it's not big but it will be in

around 20 years time oh no once it's established okay established that so once the tree has

been in for a while and has settled down if you say you've become established it means

that you're you've been somewhere for a long time and you've sort of settled in okay and

get established in a position can't you work so so here is our latest tree it is a new

tree that mr steve has actually just planted so there it is in the pot but now steve has

actually planted it in the ground it is a eucalyptus tree there we go now it's of quite

a it's a bit of a poorly tree okay because um the place i purchased it from was the only

only the tree you're looking at is the one with the sort of blue leaves by the way because

there's lots of other trees in the background well it's it's the one that's at the front

that's right okay it looks poorly doesn't it look at the look at the uh the red spots

on those leaves that's because it's an old plant it's been sitting in a pot in this garden

centre for years and nobody had bought it it's the only one they had left okay i got

a lovely discount instead of 38 pounds i got it for 10 pounds so i thought i'm going to

give it a chance i'm going to put it like i've always wanted a eucalyptus tree yes so

if anyone from australia is working is watching have we got anyone from australia watching

because i think eucalyptus is indigenous to australia yes you often find the eucalyptus

tree it also has another name do you know what the other name is no i don't it is gum

tree gum tree gum tree because of course if you open the the bark there is there is a

sort of liquid that comes out from the sap so yes it's called a gum tree yes and there

is an expression in australian english if you are up a gum tree you are in a difficult

situation so in australian dialect if you are up a gum tree it means you are in a difficult

situation so there it is mr steve's new tree well intelligent has i was going to say that

but intelligent uh intelligent has already said that we need to get a koala bear yes

yes because of course koala bears their their main diet is eucalyptus leaves which are apparently

very very difficult to digest and only the koala bear uh well certainly uh that is the

only one that i know of that can actually has the ability to digest very hard coarse

eucalyptus leaves okay so we're hoping to attract a koala bear into much when you know

koala bears aren't bears no they look like bears they look like bears but they're not

bears they're cool yes so they normally they're normally called koalas but a lot of people

say koala bear because they look like little teddy bears my mother had one outside her

front door koala bear what a strange thing to find outside your house your mum must have

been very surprised yeah she's she found a koala bear in a garden so she bought a eucalyptus

tree and planted it just specifically for that koala so it had something to eat yes

very kind of course it was the other way around she had a eucalyptus tree when my parents

moved to the current house 10 years ago okay there was a eucalyptus tree but they were

persuaded to cut it down and i told them not to because a gardener said oh eucalyptus trees

the roots are near the house they damage the foundations well maybe if the tree is 100

foot high but not if it's only that high so ever since then i've i've been i've admired

the eucalyptus tree and i've always wanted one of the garden so i've got one for a bargain

ten pounds lewis says uh they like dry climates and poor soils luis mendes hello lewis uh

yes uh they don't like frosts apparently because when i bought this from the garden centre

am i boring you just a little bit just a little bit the man at the garden centre said that

nobody buys eucalyptus trees in this area anymore because about 10 years ago there was

a hard frost and everyone's eucalyptus trees died off in their garden that's amazing i

know he said he said you'll be the only house in this area with the eucalyptus tree he said

all you've got to do is protect the roots in the winter so the frost doesn't get onto

the roots and then you will be fine so we're going to you know so so because of course

in australia they don't really have frost no very much they don't have frost or snow

in australia but there it is mr steve's mr steve's lovely well we'll show it in situ

in situ uh which is a which i presume is a is a latin phrase uh which means in the place

that it sits in yes uh where where i have put it in situ we will we will show that next

week if you're interested people are telling me to slow down beatrice says i'm talking

too quickly so i will slow down even i can't understand you i have no idea what you're

talking about oh but something else as well steve has been very busy in the garden because

also he has planted some new lawn so so we are waiting for the seeds to come up but this

morning and also yesterday afternoon steve has been very busy outside watering his grass

seed there he is there's mr steve you might be able to see a chicken as well is that this

morning there is a chicken no last night oh yes i did i did say yes there's a chicken

but that's not i didn't see it that is not our chicken that is our neighbour's chicken

that's escaped yes it escaped so there is steve he's planted some grass seed and in

a few months we will have some lovely green grass growing in that corner of the garden

well i had to shoot afterwards because of course i'd put down a lot of grass seed okay

do you like my technique there for watering this very flick of the wrist yes flick of

the wrist okay uh and afterwards i so there's lots of grass seed on there that chicken must

have been watching me i turned my back went to the garage came back and the chicken was

all over there pecking away at the seed yes which is unfortunate for it because it might

poison itself because it's specially coated seed so i had to show it back over to the

neighbour's garden good i did think of you know ringing its neck and having it for tea

roasting it in the oven that's a good story that's that's a good solution i'm distracting

you mr duncan is uh mr duncan uh thinks that i take over the live streams too much and

talk about random subjects away from whatever mr duncan has decided to talk about so have

we got a oh we've got a bit of a technical issue shall i try and write that mr duncan

can i touch your equipment you can it's not very often that mr steve leave it i think

we'll leave it oh okay that's that's very decisive of you it's very gusty as i said

yes sudden gust okay blowing your equipment around yes good

what the hell is going on here today i've spent all week literally unable to speak or

or eat and i've been so so excited to come back and see you and then everything went

wrong and now and now my pieces of my equipment are starting to blow away i'm going to correct

it wait there yes uh victoria eucalyptus is a as a medicine for when you have a cold or

something uh the eucalyptus oil it's very strong you can put it in hot water breathe

it in and it will clear all your passages in your lungs and in your nose and in your

sinuses so yes i get lots of colds yes normally so when that tree is flourishing something

is flourishing it means it's growing well doing well lovely and everything is right

with the world i will chop off the leaves and steep them in boiling water and breathe

in the lovely eucalyptus oil and my cold will vanish into thin air what the hell are you

talking about i don't know i'm just talking and trying to talk slowly so that people can

understand what i am saying it's not so much the the way you're saying it it's more the

content of the sentences that's the problem to be honest enough about me mr duncan how

about the viewers and their desire to learn something of the english language what i think

now as you know pedro has been sporting he has been styling his hair in a very unusual

way very long i liked it long however last week pedro told us that he's actually cut

his hair would you like to see pedro's hair yes okay here is pedro belmont's hair for

those who are wondering there he oh look at that pedro very nice well now in english we

call that a short back and sides short back and sides so that particular hairstyle that's

what it's called so instead of having long hair pedro pedro belmont now has short back

and sides i hope that you kept your long hair that you cut off pedro um

because if you did you can send it to me i can have it turned into a wig and i can wear

it yes uh because you know i'm thinking of wearing a wig to look younger although i don't

think i need to based on experience okay i had this week right uh but uh what what are

you went to the hospital this week steve had a checkup this week at the hospital and when

he arrived at the hospital they asked how old steve was well and you told them didn't

you you said your date of birth and they didn't believe you did they they they couldn't believe

how old you you actually are the nurse thought she had the wrong notes yes she said how old

are you i said 60 she went oh she just couldn't believe it i was of course on the top of the

world and my blood pressure was of that of an 18 year old i mean i'm as fit as a fiddle

mr duncan i think i'm certainly fit enough for pedro uh even though i might not have

his body okay uh biologically obviously it's due to my checkup i have been told that i

have the metabolism of a teenager that's what i was told so i just wish i felt like one

steve wishes he felt like a teenager well we will try and find one for you

i think we need to move on because i think i'm just getting a bit hot under the collar

right under yes we're getting lots of what i love about this is steve is taking no notice

of the live chat and there's lots of things going on there's messages galore pedro says

of being recognized as a true hunk they are very impressive pedro very impressive indeed

and you will be pleased to know that even though i am 60 i actually had the metabolism

something it means you don't like it so uh i could say that i'm not put off by looking

at pedro's photographs well to be discouraged to be discouraged is to put off i am definitely

not put off by looking at pedro's pictures and takeoff means to take off some clothing

as in pedro took off his clothes to reveal a gorgeous hunky body to us all right that's

just showing how you can use those phrases in a sentence can i just say that this this

live stream will be deleted you are never going to see this live stream again you are

watching history here this this is something you're never going to see again because this

is going to be deleted forever take off all your clothes yes thank you for your phrase

you would use those particularly okay steve joe carl says this live stream is useless

today i think he means that in a humorous way no i don't think so do we know who joe

carl is has he been on before yes joe carl is one of our regulars fancy me not recognizing

they come to visit you this year yes the pheasants are very busy at the moment because the the

male pheasants are looking for lady pheasants now they normally have many many girlfriends

don't they at the same time they normally walk around with around maybe four or five

the pheasants in fact the pheasant was in the garden this morning steve walking around

all this week i've been i've been wishing that i could speak and now i'm wishing that

well i'm wishing that i couldn't read because i've just read a comment from pedro which

has just left me feeling just crestfallen and rejected pedro says i have a personal

trainer i'm dating her

that explains a lot that explains well why pedro's muscles have got larger

i can carry on all of them carry on okay i just feel awful now i just i just feel such

a fool i've been taken in all this time all along pedro's got a girlfriend no no one no

to look at so so we've just taken a look at pedro with his punky body yesterday we were

in town weren't we yes we were in town and there were lots of people around yesterday

including a group of cyclists

let's just say let's just say they were all rather overweight now i know at this time

of year people do become a little adventurous with their clothing as as the weather starts

to get nice and uh warm but there were there was a group of cyclists yesterday in much

wenlock town square and they were all very overweight in fact i don't know how they were

able to ride the bicycles let's just say they didn't have pedro's physique they did not

have pedro's physique and here is an example of the sort of thing we had to look at so

there it is now please please this is heartfelt from mr steve and myself if you are a person

who is overweight please do not i repeat do not wear lycra tight lycra because it's not

very nice to look at i'll be honest with you i know what you're going to say mr duncan

you are such a horrible man you are body shaming i'm not body shaming

it's nothing to do with that it's just that sometimes sometimes you just have to think

does this look good they i i mean it was you know a middle-aged man they were meant but

there was a middle-aged man with a big stomach but there were eight of them and they were

all overweight wearing lycra lycra is not a pretty sight if if you are overweight is

not a pretty sight all i can think is that these men are completely deluded or they just

what i'm saying is at some point a person looked in the mirror and this this this is

this is the thing that i can't actually grasp now i know it's unfair to say this but there

are other things you can wear besides this you see so imagine someone looking in the

mirror and thinking that this looks all right well i suppose at least they were wearing

black no they weren't oh well well i'm not sure yet but yes there must have been 10 of

them 10 uh middle aged men yes wearing tight lycra yes i it was it was they should have

been arrested quite frankly uh and the problem is in the uk as in a lot of western countries

but not france this should have been france and not italy what no i'm coming most men

in the uk are overweight when they're in their middle ages most yeah most at least three

quarters uh just give up that's not most put on it is it's more than fifty percent if it's

more than fifty percent it's most okay uh whereas if you go to other countries in europe

they take care of themselves a lot better we've got the highest rate of obesity certainly

in europe if not in the world one of the highest in the world i think the united states might

be top but you know fine let yourself go but don't subject the rest of us to the obscene

site what of wearing lycra in public no okay i'm not getting that excited about it it was

just a shock you see because there are certain things if i if and by the way i've just reminded

myself i'm just remembering something remember the time that i wore lycra in in greece however

i was 24 and also very slim you see you were wearing white lighter white like for shorts

with no underwear you were getting looks that is for certain yes i'm not sure what sort

of looks but you were certainly getting them i was getting lots of looks yes uh the things

you do when with the confidence and arrogance of youth the

exuberance

it means that you are a bit like we are today we're talking a lot we're we're using lots

of expressions we're being very lively and open is that how you would describe the world

exuberant is carefree carefree happy i'm none of those things today i feel the opposite

today but but you know what it is you know what you know what i mean you know that i'm

not being prejudiced now this isn't prejudice because in our life we have come up against

a lot of hatred and prejudice so so i'm not doing this lightly i'm not doing this without

thinking about it first but please please just wear something loose wear some nice baggy

shorts by the way yes yes please do are we moving on i don't know to another subject

john i noticed earlier is in chile hello john i watched a very interesting program about

chile here we go this week on al jazeera which is an excellent uh uh news channel okay and

they did a long program about chile because it's one i think in chile you have the highest

or the certainly the largest copper mine in the world and i think you've got the largest

resources of copper so you've got a giant copper mile which is three two miles wide

and half a mile deep okay and you're supplying all this copper for the rest of the world

in order for us to become greener and make lots of batteries but of course you're paying

the price with all the pollution in the air so i don't know what to say about that but

i'd sort of it was a very interesting program about the natural resources that you have

copper being the main one and i think i'm right about that and i hope you're not living

in the area that's being polluted by the mining because you're paying the price for for us

in the west being able to afford all this green technology and uh it's not really that

green is it if people in other countries are suffering uh because of the uh extraction

techniques thought i would say that okay are we playing the sentence game today mr duncan

i i to be honest with you i i just want to go into the house and watch columbo to be

honest because the problem today is everything went wrong technically and unfortunately when

that happens it's it's inside i feel deflated and let down you see so it's very hard to

become excited mr bruno is saying why should overweight people hide uh just because they

don't look like the models well that's well i'm not again again you see there there are

certain things that look good on people now i'm not saying that you have to be a male

model but i am saying that maybe maybe if you are 18 or 21 stone maybe wearing skin

tight lycra isn't a good idea

it's it's even worse well it's even worse on the beach i don't think you would see if

you go to the beach that you normally see very very overweight men in in tiny little

speedos speedos but yeah that we've got to be careful what we say yes well it's just

a point you see it's just a point say i wouldn't do it i wouldn't walk around the street now

wearing lycra because i have you know my body has changed over the years i'm not i'm not

as slim as i used to be so i wouldn't do it i i know that that would not look good that's

all that's nothing else wine as well in chile yes chilean wine is uh is well known here

and it's lovely but yes um what are we talking about next mr duncan i think we're only sort

it's something you enjoy there are many things that that might float your boat calm down

perhaps perhaps you like looking at men who are overweight in lycra you see you see there

like looking at overweight men in lycra but it's okay knock yourself out enjoy it have

fun the thing is um when it comes to just just don't do it in much wenlock town center

feel out of place because you won't discover that all the other men are wearing lycra so

five minutes the queen's english when we talk about the queen's english we're not talking

about the english that mr steve speaks

because when we're talking about queens there's no bigger queen than mr steve the queen's

english now quite often we think of posh english as being the queen's english but also there

are some interesting ways of using english that can actually refer to to certain words

for example you might have something called the royal one or the royal we have you heard

of that steve i've heard of it but i'll let you explain so when we talk about the royal

one quite often we are talking about a person talking about their individual opinion about

something or maybe their feelings so the person is talking about themselves in the first person

it's very interesting so one one how do you feel today one feels rather unhappy one feels

rather sad so you are actually referring to yourself how you feel and quite often you

will hear the queen of england speak in that way one feels sad one feels unhappy instead

of using i hm yes exactly so you if you want to sound very posh then use the word one ins

in place of the word i and people may think that you'll come from aristocratic

yes you may think that you are of royal birth or just pretentious so the royal one quite

often also if you look in a dictionary quite often you will see the word one used when

describing the definition of a word so one's own opinion might be stating something that

that person believes one's own thoughts one's own views so we we do actually use one to

mean a person or an individual quite often however most people relate this to the queen

or maybe a person who is very very posh one is most amused by your joke then of course

we have the royal we as well we so quite often again maybe you or the company that you are

in you can refer to it as we the royal we we would be most honoured if you would join

us later we would so there are two good examples of something that a lot of people tend to

refer to as the queen's english anaki has said use the phrase one never knows ah very

good yes excellent very good one if somebody might say to you um how do you think you will

get on today at work or how do you think you will get on in your new career and you might

say one never knows so you mean yes one never knows it's just it's it's posh people don't

normally use those expressions in that way one never knows what will happen next because

it's very hard to predict the future one never knows and that can refer to more than one

person can't it not just yourself or or an individual in general so an individual a person's

own feelings or thoughts or opinion or the way they look at the world around them one's

own view of the world so we often use that when we're talking about the individual the

individual feelings when people also refer to the queen's english they mean proper english

don't they yes but not using using constructing sentences in in a proper way yes well this

is what i've mentioned earlier about received pronunciation that's on the screen now so

rp is a form of pronunciation that is normally taught so we often think of the queen's english

as being received pronunciation because quite often and i suppose it might be true if you

come from a certain background or if you are royalty maybe there is a certain way that

people will expect you to speak so that's the reason why we call it received pronunciation

because it it is literally received it is taught a lot of people think that i have received

pronunciation but i don't i don't really have it because i do have an accent so i think

that's quite an interesting point to make do you um

mr duncan say you would you say you speak with the queen's english no no i i've got

an accent so so a lot of words that i use you will actually hear the accent like the

word accent you see so if you listen to my pronunciation of words such as bath path and

accent normally the the sound is very sharp it has a very sharp sound to it so that is

that is the main difference sergio says tell us about the queer's english well i think

you could probably tell us sergio

i don't know why don't you tell us is my answer to that uh we're joking of course we're joking

oh yeah giovanni says in italian yes use a sort of phrase to say a person we go like

i think it's probably similar or the bbc english yes valentina bbc english yes um many years

ago in the early days of the bbc in the radio days because before television of course there

was radio and everyone on the radio had received pronunciation so they wouldn't allow anyone

on the radio you couldn't hear any voices that sounded regional or had accents they

would all have received pronunciation in fact the bbc insisted that that's how they spoke

they wouldn't allow any regional accents on on the radio and i suppose also in the early

days of television as well so when television was still a new thing when the bbc was presenting

programs or the news the person would always have received pronunciation and later many

many years later slowly regional accents from different parts of the country you would slowly

start to hear them as well uh i think something is going on with the the colour balance because

uh jimmy from hong kong hello says it looks like the clock has gone gone back to the 1980s

oh so um another technical issue just to make you feel even better mr duncan is that uh

well you just think that you you were taking on a rosy glow a pink glow

we've got bees all over the place at the moment and you made a very interesting observation

this week did i about bees oh yes some of the birds have been eating the bees and eating

bees i was surprised because i thought if the bird eats the bee then maybe the bee will

sting the inside of the bird's mouth or mouth they don't have mouths they have beaks but

maybe as as the bird swallows the bee it might sting the inside of the bird but i was quite

surprised by that a black bird and also a robin yes we saw one yesterday with two bees

in its mouth two bees i think maybe they kill the bees with their beaks okay and then i

mean i didn't know that birds ate bees okay um so there we go maybe we can eat them as

well maybe we can one never knows and who knows are they the same says maybe yes who

knows who knows one never knows so you are in both of those sentences you are expressing

the fact that something is uncertain so if you are certain about something that means

you do know if you are uncertain about something it means you don't know you you have no idea

you have no clue who knows uh i would say if you say the word who knows then you are

replying to somebody saying something uh about it's a more general well who knows nobody

knows but if you sort of say one never knows you're sort of referring to yourself aren't

you i don't know really but one never knows is a very posh way to say who knows someone

said to you what do you think the weather's going to be like do you think it's going to

rain today and you might say well who knows but you might say uh if someone says what

is it going to rain today one never knows you you know that it would be a very posh

waves they are almost the same and i think you probably could use them more or less interchangeably

but if you said one never knows that would be quite posh i would say do you recommend

listen to the bbc no no okay in order to speak english no because now they've got all sorts

of acts so don't listen to the bbc stay away from the bbc all together if you see it coming

up just turn it off and listen to mr duncan instead yes that sounds like a good idea uh

yes because you can have the plural so when you go to the doctor you can also say you're

going to the doctors so maybe the surgery the place where the doctors work and they

will they will practice their medicine on you yeah so that is actually correct english

you would think that it wouldn't be it's very good but in fact it is because if you say

you're going to the doctors as mr duncan said it means you're going to the surgery that

contains where lots of doctors work that's it doesn't have to be a specific doctor so

it would work you're not normally terrified of doctors i would say although

you could say that certain examinations yes i suppose it depends where where they're looking

yes because there are lots of places that a doctor can look when they are examining

you maybe they look into your eye to make sure your eye is nice and clear yes maybe

they look into your ear to make sure that your ears all clear there are nice and clear

maybe they look into your mouth to make sure your mouth is healthy maybe they move down

lower and listen to your heart ah you see you see what i did and then they go further

down and that's when they put the big rubber gloves on those big rubber gloves whenever

you see a doctor with with a rubber glove that goes all the way to his elbow and a tube

of lubricant you know you're in trouble and then you may well be jimmy afraid of the doctors

very afraid well you might be afraid i don't know if it might be a treat for some people

of course uh we haven't been able to visit dentists or doctors surgeries recently because

of the lockdowns and and general pandemic so uh i haven't been to have my teeth checked

for a year and a half um so yes we soon will be able to be terrified of going to the doctors

another word uh back passage is is a sort of a common word isn't that the way into your

house around the back well that's it a back passage uh is a passageway at the back of

your house okay but it also means your colon yeah i think it means passage i think it means

something more explicit than that but there you go your back passage yes you you your

bowel your bowel or your colon bowels if you go to the bowels of a ship you're right at

the bottom of the ship hence using the word bowels to mean your back passage or your colon

what i didn't know this was going to turn into an anatomy lesson and i'm amazed i can

remember so much about that part of the human body yes it certainly seems like one you like

to think about i'm definitely not going to show you uh my prostate but i couldn't i couldn't

without a camera yeah you really can't really say anyway the sentence came the sentence

go and uh learned it right whatever you must learn to and that's all right well i think

uh tomec says my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer so i'm not asking to make

yes but i'm fine yes it's uh you know you need to have that examination if you're a

man because uh say you have to get up in the night and go to the loo go to the toilet a

lot more than you normally would do there's a symptom that you may have an enlarged prostate

and then you need to get it get it checked out maybe have a blood test because uh if

you leave it you might have a nasty cancer okay well and it's particularly prevalent

amongst uh black and asian populations apparently so uh for some reason the incidence is higher

don't know why but that's certainly in the uk it is so uh get it checked out it's embarrassing

but worth it to live a long

what are we going to use today mr duncan for that examination louis is going thank you

everyone for hanging on for longer today uh because of mr duncan's technical problems

we have gone on longer we've got two minutes to carry on this conversation we haven't gone

or something that they might and they but they take advantage of you you might say to

them you must learn to depend less on my generosity yes that's it you might say that to a child

if you are a parent and you're always giving out money to help them buy new things you

might say to them one day enough's enough you must learn to depend less on my generosity
