here we go it's another Sunday livestream it is myself mr. Duncan I

have of course been here on YouTube for a very long time how many years have I

been here do you know well at the end of October I would have been here for 11

years I have been here now broadcasting on YouTube with recorded lessons and of

course live lessons as well I've been on YouTube for nearly 11 years

and can I just say a big thank you to YouTube for sending me all of those

lovely flowers and all of the congratulations and all of the the the

the lovely greeting no actually I didn't get anything did I

I didn't get anything from YouTube I didn't get anything last year YouTube

did not acknowledge my 10th anniversary last year so I have a strange feeling

that they're not going to do it this year either with my 11th year so that's

a shame isn't it anyway the important thing is that you

are here with me today thanks for joining me we have a very special show

today we have something rather amazing happening later I'm not going to tell

you what it is I'm not going to mention it I'm not going to go into too much

detail but let's just say we have a lot going on here today

it's a glorious day here in the UK it's absolutely unbelievable I can't believe

how warm it is outside outside at the moment it's about 21 degrees I kid you

not it is definitely warm today very warm

indeed so it's a very hot day which of course is very unusual for October now

normally at this time of the year the temperature starts to fall because of

course we are now into autumn but today it is warm it is sunny outside that's

the reason why I'm wearing my sunglasses because I have been outside preparing

something very special but where will we be we will be outside we will be live

and we will be in a very special place and of course mr. Steve will be there as

well we have of course mr. Steve coming your way something I haven't realised or

something I've forgotten about is the fact that I can't see very well when I'm

wearing my sunglasses so please just just let me change my sunglasses

because I can't see a thing it's very hard to operate the equipment that's

better I can see you all now in fact suddenly everything is very bright I

might put my sunglasses back on so as i said mr. steve is here steve is here at

3 o'clock today but i will also be with mr. steve

outside in a very unusual place that's all I'm saying for now so join us later

on or stick with us through till 3 o'clock when mr. Steve arrives and of

course I will be here today for two hours in total what are we going to do

for the whole two hours I have no idea but it's going to be a very busy day we

went for a lovely walk yesterday mr. Steve and myself we went for a lovely

walk here it is this is the walk that we went on yesterday a lovely autumn walk

through much Wenlock and as you can see the trees are starting to turn green and

many of the leaves are falling but this particular walk is one of my most

favorite walks it's a beautiful area to walk along especially on an autumn day

so there it is we went for a lovely walk let's start walking shall we to do we

are strolling along on an autumn day looking at all the lovely sights so

there it is the autumn leaves are now falling and

everything is looking very scenic I don't know about you but I love autumn

so much I think autumn is such a magical time of year of course I like summer as

well summer is quite nice I like summer because during summer it's

hot and sunny in fact we are having a very hot and sunny day today

I have no idea why perhaps it has something to do with global warming do

you think so maybe it has something to do with the fact that the earth is

getting warmer and maybe the weather will start getting more dramatic during

the autumn and winter season who knows so lots of people on the live chat oh of

course it is October isn't it which of course means that at the end of this

month besides my 11th anniversary something

else is also happening do you know what it is you can see over the road

you can see some pumpkins can you see the pumpkins now this gives you a clue

as to what is happening later this month but what is it what is happening later

this month do you know what it is do you know what particular event is on the way

luciano says is it Halloween mr. duncan you are right yes halloween is on its

way at the end of october and there you can see some pumpkins i actually filmed

this yesterday during my lovely autumn walk so this particular shot was taken

yesterday in Much Wenlock town center right in the square I must admit I have

never eaten pumpkins I've never tried to eat a pumpkin I know you can make

pumpkins into a pie you can have pumpkin pie but to be honest with you I've never

tried to eat pumpkins ever

Tomek also says mr. Duncan it's Halloween at the end of the month yes

you are right that is the reason why the pumpkins are

on sale the other reason why I've never eaten pumpkins is because I don't like

the smell and I'm the only person is it just me am I the only person who doesn't

like the smell of pumpkins it's very pungent pumpkins smell very pungent I

don't like it at all mr. Duncan I'm very surprised when I see your live stream

says 'no Jun Kwang why are you so surprised

I don't know why you're surprised because I'm here every Sunday so you can

catch me live on YouTube every single Sunday what's the problem why are you so

surprised I'm here every Sunday so I'm here this

Sunday I'm here next Sunday and also the Sunday after in fact I might be here

every Sunday until the end of time wouldn't that be nice a sad story to

tell you now I actually injured myself today can you see that I've actually

hurt myself whilst preparing for today's livestream can you see that look at that

terrible scratch on my arm do you want to see how I did that this is how I

scratched my arm I actually caught my arm on one of these Rose thorns so this

particular thorn the one you can see now in the picture scratched my arm this

morning and there was blood everywhere I was bleeding for a moment I thought I

would have to call an ambulance but fortunately the bleeding stopped but

there it was there so that's the cause of my big

horrible scratch on my arm can you see it look at that so look at the things

that I do to teach English to you I'm actually getting injured now I'm

injuring myself just so you can learn English look at that I've cut myself and

cut oh dear do you go trick-or-treating during Halloween do I do it now I'm not

a child I think trick-or-treating is for

children not for adults to be honest wow so many people are joining me today on

the live chat thank you very much we have Shi Jing mr. Duncan I thought

Halloween is a kind of us festival no we we do celebrate Halloween here as well

in the UK in fact many countries around the world have started celebrating

Halloween but I suppose if I was honest I suppose it is celebrated more in the

United States but we do celebrate it here as well we kind of do lots of

special things children will dress up as scary characters and they will walk

around the streets and normally they will knock on the door or knock on the

doors of the houses nearby and they will ask for something nice and if they don't

get something nice they will play a trick so that's why we call it

trick-or-treat have you ever made a jack-o'-lantern

jack-o'-lantern so that's the thing that you make out of a pumpkin you make

little eyes and a mouth and normally you put a candle inside I've never made one

myself because I don't like the smell of pumpkins

I think pumpkins smell horrible they're quite disgusting so no I'm not a

big fan of pumpkins

I'm just thinking of all the fun we're going to have later on today look look I

injured myself I am actually injured I could have lost all of my blood I could

have bled to death preparing today's live English lesson

look at that I've actually I've actually hurt myself I want my mummy my mummy to

come and kiss it better just without just like when I was a child

because the weather today is amazing I can't believe it it doesn't feel like

October it feels like July it is so warm and very sunny all will be revealed

it's a beautiful day today shall we have a look at one of my

English lessons well before that I will tell you what else is coming today we

have some flash words and also one flash phrase from mr. Steve the first one

coming very soon but first of all we are going to have a look at one of my

English lessons and this is taken from full English number 23 have you seen my

full English lessons you haven't why not hello my name's

George Clooney and you're watching mr. Duncan's full English you'd better not

have a problem with that or I'll get the missus to sue you then this is their

wife

they say that eating fruit is good for you there are so many different types of

fruit to choose from however for me my favorite fruit has to

be the mango it's sweet aromatic juice contained within that soft and succulent

flesh is irresistible to me I first started eating mangoes regularly whilst

I was living in China the mangoes there grow in the southern region which has a

warm climate a perfect place for them to grow sadly here in England the climate

is not suitable for mango plantations they have to be imported from warmer

climes this particular mango has come all away from Ivory Coast in northwest

Africa mangoes are available in most supermarkets here although their quality

can vary this particular mango is nice and ripe it is ready to be eaten

if you want to know how ripe a mango is just give it a squeeze I can tell that

this mango is perfectly ripe and is ready to be eaten do you like eating

fruit which type of fruit is your favorite can you see the pink flower

behind me it is called a rhododendron whenever I think of this flower I always

find myself remembering my time at school not because we grew them there

but because whenever we had to sit in English spelling test they would always

ask us to spell the word rhododendron as you can see it is not a very easy word

to spell and I always got it wrong still the rhododendron does look nice when

it's in full bloom it's nice to look at but not so nice to spare

here is another lovely plant however unlike the rhododendron this one is

still growing I've put in this particular plant for two reasons

first it has a lovely appearance and second it has a special name that caught

my eye for those who don't recognize it this is

a Senora car dunk ulis I like the fact that dunk is in the name

this plant is also known as an artichoke thistle as its name suggests the flowers

formed on this plant are large and thorny the main flower itself is a

majestic purple I really can't wait to see this plant come into bloom not least

of all because bees butterflies and birds are attracted to this plant

fortunately for me the card uncle is gross very quickly

mr. Duncan what are you doing I'm watching this part I'm waiting for the

water inside it to boil but why haven't you got anything better to do I want to

see the pretty bubbles in the water as it comes to the boil you bonehead

haven't you heard of that well-known proverb which proverb do you mean many a

Mickle makes a muckle a stitch in time saves nine look before

you leap don't look a gift horse in the mouth

no mr. Duncan the proverb is a watched pot never boils

if you wait for something to occur it will take longer for it to happen or at

least it will seem to oh I see so in fact it is better for me to walk away

and leave the pot to boil in its own time let whatever is happening happen

when it's ready exactly sometimes waiting for a thing to happen can be

frustrating it is much better to forget about it and let it happen in its own

time remember mr. Duncan a watched pot never boils

squeeze squeeze squeeze no matter how much I squeeze this tube of toothpaste

nothing will come out it would be safe to say that this toothpaste tube is

empty do you notice how I pronounce the word tube the first part of the word

sounds like chair it is common in British English to pronounce the T use

sound as two other words include tune tutor tuba there are of course

exceptions to this the word Tunnel is still pronounced with the hard T sound

in American English the hard T is often used in most words beginning with T u

words such as tube toon tutor tuba are all pronounced with the hard T this is

one good example of the civil differences that exist between American

and British English pronunciation

take a close look at this branch can you see what's happened here

it looks as if it's being pecked at by something well it has these marks were

made by a woodpecker a great spotted woodpecker to be precise this branch has

been adopted as a feeding area by the bird

it picks nuts from the nearby bird feeder and brings them to this point

where it places the peanut into a small hole so as to make it easier to peck at

the spectacle of a woodpecker feeding this closely is nice to watch however

over time this feeding routine will erect Leiby damage the tree the branch

will eventually die as the bird digs deeper and deeper into it so there is an

upside to this in that I get to view something that is very unusual in my

garden while the downside is that my lovely dams and tree will end up being

severely damaged I don't blame the woodpecker after all it's got to eat

found this small piece of my house lying around the house lying around in fact I

had put it in a safe place but I couldn't remember where it belonged

can you believe that I've actually found out where this came from

let's have a look would you like to have a look where where it came from the

mystery piece the mystery object if I can find I can't find it now where is it

gone come on quickly I'm doing so well today where is it where's the where's

the mystery object I can't find it I can't see it it's not fair why is this

happening to me today where's it gone please don't tell me that I haven't put

that into the encoder oh my goodness how foolish how silly of me I wanted to tell

you where I had found this but I forgot it

let you know what as embarrassing wasn't it we have of course the mystery idioms

whew we have something else to look at the mystery idioms from last week here

they are whoa that was close

here are the mystery idioms now last week I gave you these mystery idioms

but I didn't reveal the answer because we had well we had a lot of things going

on last week so instead we're doing it again this week we're going to do it

this week and I will give the answers later so there is the first mystery

idiom for today and there is the second one

say that I've been very busy today is it as an understatement I've been so busy I

weather is amazing today in the north of England is it really well it's beautiful

here we will be taking a look outside later on because we are going outside

to see the sleeping bull who remembers the sleeping bull from a few weeks ago

in fact three months ago I showed you the sleeping bull

I've been asked if it would be possible to show the sleeping bull again because

right now the Bulls at the back of my house are all being taken away one by

one that's what's happening to them there they're going away for slaughter

unfortunately so let's have a look at one of the the sleeping bulls taking a

relaxing rest at the back of my house

talk about accents we think it's not a good subject to talk about and the

reason why people get very upset is because sometimes a person can be judged

by their accent so if a person has a certain type of accent we might think

that they come from maybe a lower class or maybe we assume that they come from a

very high class in society so I think the subject of accents sometimes can get

people very upset and very angry I think so so sometimes the the subject of

accents can be a little controversial but we will be talking about accents

with mr. Steve a little bit later on talking of mr. Steve what does mr. Steve

we are here today we're going to talk about something that can be a little bit

controversial yeah something controversial I don't know what I was

feeling today like I wanted to do something a little bit controversial so

we're going to talk about accents accents accents what so from your point

of view what how would you describe an accent

well it's a way of pronouncing words or sentences that's particular to an

individual or a group of people or even a country so it's just a way of

pronouncing words different ways of pronouncing the consonants or the vowels

slightly different that marks it out but you can still always understand the

English so doesn't matter where you are in the world English is always English

as you often say but the accents mean that there are enough changes it you can

tell it's slightly different but you can still understand what it's about so you

can get country accent so you get a British accent or an American accent or

Australian Caribbean accent still English but slightly different accents

and ways of pronouncing the words and then you can get within different

countries you get a regional accent so you might get a northern accent you

might get a Scottish English accent a Welsh English accent and then that can

even come down to individual towns so you get a London accent yeah so what's

interesting and the thing that I sometimes I get very angry about is when

people talk about American English and British English because normally when we

talk about these things that they are often divided is if is if there there is

more than one type of English so the English normally that's being spoken or

used is the same English so the accent isn't necessarily a different type of

English it is just a different sound that the English makes and that is some

something that I I sometimes get annoyed about is when people say oh is this

American English you're talking or is it British English can I just say now there

is only one only one English language and that is English so accents are

variations on the sound not the syntax I think that's the best way of putting it

would you say mr. Steve yes I won yes I would agree so it doesn't really

matter whether you're speaking American English or British English as long as

people understand Durst and you that's probably the most important thing I

would say I mean I've got friends that come from all different communities or

different parts of the country just as whoever's watching now whatever country

you're in China France Russia I'm sure you have individual accent regional

accents within your own country as well and you can still understand what what

they're saying in the same language in different parts of the country that's

the same here it's just the course English's of widely-used sort of

worldwide language so you get even more variations because of that which is it

and it's very interesting it's nice to try out different accents and try and

speak in Australian we won't do that today because I'm not very good at

accents I'll try an American accent or a Caribbean I've been talking about

specific accents by the way we have lady birds at the moment lady Birds

everywhere they are swarming all around here today so no we're not going to talk

about the actual accent the sound of them we're just going to talk about

certain variations of words in English so we're talking about sometimes the way

a word might be pronounced so not the actual spelling of the word or the fact

that there might be more than one type of English there isn't one more than one

type of English there is only one type of English and that's English so all of

the variations are other things as well they've got people walking by it's okay

I said anything has happened anything is happening that's good so come and join

us shall we invite them perhaps they've got an accent that we'd like to listen

to yes yes Steve's now describing the thing that

you can't see there are people walking OH

behind this is quite exciting it's very oh we're going to talk about a

particular word the a word aren't we yes they are words they are words that have

the the a sound now in in certain accents the a can be

pronounced how liking the word pass for example you can pronounce it with an a

sound or an R sound so you can say passed or you can say pass so the two

sounds are actually are and AH so that is the letter A ah ah so can you give us

some examples mr. Steve is the more here I've got past last or past and last

dance there's that there's one and quite often if you depending on how you're

brought up then you might pronounce it in a different way if I say for example

I'm going to the dance or we went out last night dancing people would say I

had a bit of a posh accent because a southern English accent so if you want

to sound posh in English then say it with an R sound so say dancing in the

past I used to play the piano something like that if you say last night I went

dancing that immediately gives away in the UK that you probably come from a

lower socio economic group shall we say that's getting very controversial so you

just go over second I don't know I pronounce my eighth dance but you are

you are making such a big mistake there mr. Steve now so you are saying that an

accent can define someone's social class I can I think it's wrong I think you are

definitely wrong there I don't think it has any any relevance sometimes if a

person is born in a place where there is a very strong accent or where people say

path instead of path I don't think it means that you are any further down or

in fact any further up the social class to be honest it's just it's just

something that people perceive in this country snobbery and class is very

important sometimes in certain jobs if you've got

the right accent or we pronounce words in certain ways you might be perceived

as coming from a Pasha background of course that has a well like for example

on the television and radio you only have people that's spoke with you call

it received and yes there is there is such a thing as received pronunciation

now I suppose the this the simplest way of putting it is to say the Queen's

English so basically the way in which the Queen speaks hello my name is the

Queen of England and my accent is very precise so it is very precise it is

received pronunciation it is almost taught so you are taught how to

precisely speak English received pronunciation people used to think that

I had received pronunciation until until they heard mr. Steve and a lot of people

now say that mr. Steve sounds very posh and I sound very common

he's as common as muck is that what they say is it who's saying this just people

who they want to know so I can go around and beat them up I can

I think our accents are actually quite similar although your accent depends on

where you grow up and how your parents speak and it doesn't stay fixed of

course it changes over time so they have noticed that even the Queen speaks quite

differently now than she did when she was younger

did you put more insects flying in front of us there that one just flew in front

of your lens then mr. Duncan what what you going to say to that lady I'm going

to say here Lady Bird stopped bugging us

because it's an insect and sometimes you can call an insect a bug so if something

is bugging you bugging it is annoying you so today there are lots of insects

flying around thing else to do with accent think I'm

bugging you at the moment you're pushing me off the lens I don't know believe it

you have more room there than you realize I think I've got the lean II

know you don't have to leave in don't worry it's a very wide lens on this

camera so don't worry here's another word that we we often laugh about that

we pronounced differently your tongue I say tongue but what do you say mr.

Duncan I say Tong Tong Tong you see that's

different see to me Tong is something that you used to pick up something with

a pair of tongs but where mr. Duncan comes from in Staffordshire particular

County in sort of North Midlands area they pronounced tongue as Tong so what

how do you pronounce Tong if you're going to pick something up with a pair

of tongs I still say Tong so I stick out my

tongue and I pick something up with a pair of tongs so actually do the

pronunciation is the same there we go so we've covered that one

and how I speak more partially than you because I elongate my are vowels a's in

my words and I say path bar I think it would be fair to say that over the years

over the years though Steve a serious point is that I think I have slightly

refined my accent over the years since I started teaching so I've been teaching

now for around 14 years can you believe it so over 14 years I've been teaching

and at that time I think I have slightly refined the way in which I speak because

you have to make it clear that there is no point standing in a classroom and

speaking to the class and then class there you go

Chloe would say class so you would say class stand in front of the class and I

would stand in front of the class code but there is no point standing in front

of the class and having your students not understand what you're saying so

sometimes you have to speak clearly you have to

speak precisely and sometimes you have to speak slowly not all the time but

sometimes you do especially when you're teaching English I think it's very

important to make sure that your students can understand what you are

saying but just to recap accents very you can have lots of American accents so

even though people assume that American English is very different from British

English within American English or within America itself and by that I mean

the United States of America there are lots of different accents as you travel

around the country you will hear lots of different types of accent being spoken

and just the same here in the UK if you come to the UK and you go to London you

will hear lots of people speaking a certain type of English cockney alright

yeah yeah how's your father how you're doing

so it's a bit like that it's a bit like George Clooney at the start of today's

live stream yeah hello hello I'm from London George Clooney do you have him on

your show yes we have all the celebrities here brief I didn't get him

on the roof though did you know is he's afraid of heights oh that doesn't

surprise me so we've talked about accents and what

sector things like that but that's that's gone away a lot now and even on

a very precise English way but now you get regional accents people talking all

interesting here is one or two people have said it sounds like you're saying

private thing but I always wonder what's wrong with the person who is who is

getting the medicine I have a have a ladybird now crawling up the inside of

career now but failing that somebody funny like Jerry Seinfeld who is who is

one of my think he's a wonderful comedian in America and I could watch

him in any show and he's in being a lots of shows of course Seinfeld if anyone

watches that one wasn't that popular over here in the UK but I think round

the world it's a very very popular so I would love to meet him he's a very

interesting person and I think we could have lots of laughs and jokes and maybe

I could persuade him to come on your show Jerry Seinfeld yes Jerry Seinfeld a

very famous stand-up comedian what's the deal with peanuts on a plane why do they

give you peanuts on a plane I don't know why I don't know why they give you

peanuts on a plane I I would imagine it's very cheap

peanuts are very cheap to to package and buy and sell so I suppose that's the

reason why they give you peanuts I I think the reason why they give you

peanuts on an aeroplane is just to distract you for as the plane is taking

off and in going up into the into the cloud so I think that the peanuts are

just there to distract you I mean while you're choking on the peanuts I know

you're forgetting the fact that you're trundling on a runway at hundreds of

miles an hour about to soar into the sky with trundle

the trundle trim the log or accelerating rapidly down a runway with with no way

back I was gonna say I I hope that we're not trundling because trundling is going

very slow I hope it's speeding I hope it's it's it's thrusting it's speeding

along the runaway not trundling trundling is bad it's funny when you're

going on a runway there's a point when you know there's no way back anyway mr.

Duncan what is famous celebrity would you lie

to me if I if I could meet a famous celebrity there there are a lot of them

yourself of course well I'm not a celebrity I don't care

but if I could meet a famous person I think that there are a couple of people

I would like to meet one is one of my idols David Letterman I would love to

spend 20 minutes talking to the famous chat show host David Letterman and also

Steve Martin a very funny comedian very famous being in many many movies so I

think that those are two people I would like to meet and have a chat with

because I think they are very talented people and also very influential as well

I think I've been very influenced by those people by those two gentlemen and

they're people that make you make you laugh they they entertain and make you

laugh and I don't think I'd like to meet any politicians or or industrialists but

I think comedians actresses actors I don't think I'd like to meet any of

those but if Shirley Bassey definitely Goldfinger it's always it's always about

Shirley Bassey with Steve everything any question you ask him any question the

answer is always Shirley Bassey so can you sing a famous Shirley Bassey

song Gold of him Oh that'll do I have a feeling that the council tax around here

is going to drop dramatically over the next few months because of because of

all of all of this going on we have some new neighbors they must be wondering

what the heck is happening oh they're moving they're moving away already

we won't we've already scared we've already scared the new neighbors away

but all right baby come back Oh they've gone luciano says David Letterman is

very funny when he throws his pencil into the crowd yes he he likes to throw

his pencil at the camera of course he he's retired now so now he

doesn't present the chat show he stopped doing it perhaps you could do that throw

pencils around sometimes I feel like throwing something far sharper

a pencil might fit on the camera head missing can you are definitely on the

paper people were quite enamored and found it quite funny one particular

expression and I'm just going to show everybody again for anybody that didn't

see it last week this is mr. Duncan's expression that was how I looked last

week so there is my facial expression from last week that caused a lot of

hilarity amongst your viewers but I know why because because normally I look so

happy so it's very unusual to see me looking and happy so there you see so

there is a very rare moment one more time very rare it's me looking unhappy

look see how unhappy I look they're very unusual because normally I have a big

smile on my face I just kept that in there in case things

went wrong but they didn't but I showed it anyway

am i off now he's throwing me off the balcony apparently I look very glum and

very bored on that photograph at least I hope it's the photograph you're talking

Steve recorded in the studio and maybe if we have time I will chase mr. Steve

that sounds good doesn't it wait for that is that a deal go on back to the

studio now now mr. steve is going to do something

called ad libbing he is going to ad-lib whilst I go back to the studio I will

see you in a moment mr. Steve it's all yours

well mr. Duncan said I was going to ad-lib but in fact I'm not going to do

that I'm just going to disappear off the camera now let's think how long will it

take mr. Duncan to get down the ladder back to his studio well he's on the

third rung he fell off I'm not joking I'm not joking he nearly fell off the

ladder he put his foot up cause it's a little damp although it's dry out here

in sunny there's a lot of moisture on the grass and I think he must have

transferred some of that on to the rungs of the ladder and he nearly fell off

which meant I would have had to carry on for another ten minutes but anyway I can

hear him trotting back now he's going to take his shoes off I'm going to allow

him time maybe to have a glass of water mop his brow a bit because he gets very

hot and sweaty when he's doing these shows so let's assume he's just walking

back through the studio door and he's about to sit down and he's going to

suddenly cut me off so before he does that I'm going to say bye bye for now

and hopefully see you all next week so I'll leave you with a view which will

look very different in a month's time because it'll probably be snowing or

I am back in the studio even though I very nearly fell off the ladder did mr.

Steve tell you what just happened as I climbed over the side to get onto the

ladder I actually slipped and I had to grab very quickly at the ladder because

I nearly fell off I know I actually nearly fell off the ladder so not only

have I scratched myself today look there is the injury on my arm I also nearly

fell off the ladder that would have been a very interesting moment of time you

would have heard a scream as I fell to the ground lots of people saying goodbye

thank you for the ad-lib that's a great word actually ad-lib let me just quickly

write that down

ad-lib there it is ad-lib if you ad-lib it means you make something up as you go

along you ad-lib you do something off the top of your

head without any preparation you ad-lib so I must admit I think mr. Steve did a

very good job of ad-libbing shall we have a look at a little bit of one of my

it's been a long time since I last did this but as we say in English absence

makes the heart grow fonder yes I'm back again with another question-and-answer

any more digressing let's have our first question for today what is the

difference between on time and in time

this question was sent in by Sir Jay who lives in Latvia the difference between

on time and in time is well defined we use on time to show that something has

happened or occurred at the time it should have the burse was on time I was

on time for my job interview I hope you will arrive at my house on time when we

say in time we are expressing something that occurred within the time limit or

deadline the event happened before it was too late I did not miss my bus

because I got to the bus stop in time this means that I arrived at the bus

stop before the bus came I got there in time

I was within the time limit it is worth noting that there is no off time the

opposite of on time is late how can I speak English if I only learn

to read and write in it this question comes from Emmanuelle stanzler's who

lives in Tanzania believe it or not this is a very common situation when English

is being taught there is normally an order in which the language is presented

usually the first stage is to teach the students how to read English words then

they are taught how to write using the language quite often the writing in

reading is taught within the same period of time students will be asked to read

books and copy from the blackboard as time goes by the students should be able

to attain a fairly clear understanding of basic English word definitions and

grammar however when it comes to actually speaking English there may be

problems you must first get used to speaking out loud and listening to the

sound of your own voice the biggest problem facing you will be building your

confidence speaking a new language takes time and patience it is often seen as

the final part of learning any second language especially in schools this is

the reason why video lessons such as mine are so helpful to lose learning

English the words on the screen and the sound of my voice give a clear reference

allowing those watching to learn as they repeatedly play the videos again and

that was a very interesting moment of time yes I nearly fell off the roof only

before falling backwards so no fortunately I did manage to save myself

sky the meaning a pleasant but a realistic plan or idea that is unlikely

to happen some people thought that doing a live stream from the roof of my studio

was a pie in the sky idea but I proved them wrong you might view a seemingly

impossible plan or concept as being pie in the sky too fantastic

so there they are today's mystery idioms have been solved
