Tom's Tongue Twister Challenge #1 (Better English Pronunciation)

Welcome to Tom's Tongue Twister Challenge!

Now in a minute I'm going to tell you guys all about my really exciting English challenge

that I have for you but first what is a tongue twister?

Well, it's a sentence that we say to help us improve our pronunciation.

Usually looking at specific sounds.

So how does Tom's Tongue Twister Challenge work?

Well there are four stages.

Number one I'm going to teach you guys a tongue twister and how to say it correctly in British

English.

Number two you guys have to practice!

Practise!

Practise!

Practise!

Number three when it's perfect I want you to get your phone and film yourself saying

the tongue twister.

Number four here comes the fun part.

I want you to upload it on to Facebook or Instagram and tag me so that I know you've

done it so I can come and watch your video.

Also I want you to tag a friend that you would like to do the tongue twister challenge as

well.

Alright let's do today's challenge.

We've got two sounds today.

Ok, we have s and sh, ok? s and sh.

Alright let's look at how to make those sounds.

First of all s.

Now have a look at my mouth /s/ ok, so my lips are wide my cheeks are wide /s/ my tongue

is flat and quite high /s/ /s/ and I'm blowing air out of my mouth and it's kind of flowing

on the top of my tongue and hitting the back of my teeth, ok? /s/ a bit like a snake /s/.

Ok, you should be able to feel air on the back of your hand /s/.

Words that have this sound are sea, six, Sunday, sunshine loads of words like that.

Ok and the second sound /sh/ as if you are telling people to be quiet /sh/ it's that

sounds.

Now there are big differences here.

Look at the mouth.

As I say it /sh/ look at my lips they come out, ok?

So the other sound/sh/ lips are back or are wide now this time my lips go forward /sh/

not too far but you know, half way /sh/ almost like a kiss.

Ok, so /s/ /sh/ /s/ /sh/ ok, now the key thing here is to think about the tongue, where is

the tongue?

Now, at the beginning the /s/ sound the tongue is forward and quite high but with the /sh/

sound the tongue goes back, ok the tongue is back /sh/ and letting the air flow out.

So I'm going to go between the two sounds and this is my tongue ok?

So /sh/ back and then /s/ it's forward /sh/ /s/ /sh/ /s/ ok so it's coming back and then

forward for the two different sounds.

What words have the /sh/ sound?

Well she, shoe, ship, hashtag the hashtag so lots of words with sh.

Let's look at our tongue twister for today.

This is a classic one.

She sells seashells by the sea shore.

It's a tough one, it's a tough one.

Alright let's look at the sounds together.

She /sh/ sells /s/ sea /s/ shells /sh/ by the sea /s/ shore /sh/.

Ok, one more time.

She sells seashells by the sea shore.

Ok, alright, let's see if we can speed up a little bit.

Ok, here we go!

She sells seashells by the sea shore.

By the sea saw?

Not by the sea saw, by the sea shore.

It's difficult, oh my goodness, it's difficult let me try again.

She sells seashells by the sea shore.

Oh my goodness, it's not easy.
