The Modal Verb 'SHOULD' | Super Easy English 20

So today, I want to look at the modal 'should'.

Now other examples of modal verbs would be;

モーダル動詞の他の例は次のようになります。

can, could, must, might, may.

できる、できた、しなければならない、かもしれない、かもしれない。

Now 'should' can be used,  mainly to either give advice,

'should' は、 主にアドバイス

or to make a recommendation.

So here are three perfect scenarios

So let's ask the question;

what is the purpose of the word 'should'?

「しなければならない」という言葉の目的は何ですか？

Now I can think of three  purposes for the modal 'should';

ここ で、モーダル「すべき」の 3 つの目的を考えることができます。

advice, obligation and expectation.

アドバイス、義務、期待。

Now 'advice' or 'recommendation',

ここで、「アドバイス」または「推奨」

is an opinion which I might give  to you, a stranger or as a friend.

は 、見知らぬ人または友人としてあなたに与える可能性のある意見です。

For example, if you've  broken your leg, I might say;

たとえば、足を骨折した場合、次のよう に言うかもしれません。

you know, you should see a doctor.

医者に診てもらうべきです。

Now for 'obligation', 'should'  is used for an objective truth,

「義務」の場合、「すべき」 は客観的な真実を表すために使用され、

where it can take the place of the word 'must'.

「しなければならない」という言葉の代わりになります。

For example, you should pay your taxes.

たとえば、税金を支払う必要があります。

Now 'expectation', is an estimate or a guess.

現在、「期待」は見積もりまたは推測です。

For example, mmm... you should arrive by tomorrow.

たとえば、うーん... 明日までに到着する必要があります。

However, of all of these three,

ただし、これら 3 つのすべての中で

I would say that 'advice' or 'recommendation',

、「アドバイス」または「推奨」

is the most prominent use of the modal 'should'.

Now let's look at how we can  use should to give advice.

それでは、 should を使用してアドバイスを与える方法を見てみましょう。

I believe you can separate the  uses into three separate segments;

用途を 3 つのセグメントに分けることができると思います。

ourselves, others and things.

自分と他人と物。

For 'ourselves', you can use  'should' in the first person.

「私たち自身」の場合は 、一人称で「すべき」を使用できます。

For example, I should exercise more.

たとえば、私はもっと運動すべきです。

'Others' is for other people.

「その他」は他人のことです。

For example, you should work harder.

たとえば、あなたはもっと一生懸命働くべきです。

And 'things' represents objects.

そして、「もの」はオブジェクトを表します。

For example, this should work.

たとえば、これはうまくいくはずです。

Now luckily, you can use should  in all three senses in the past,

幸いなことに、 should は過去、現在、未来の 3 つの意味すべてで使用できます

the present and the future.

Now modal verbs such as 'should',

現在、'should' などの法助動詞

always have to come in combination  with a verb to complete them.

は、動詞と組み合わせて完成させる必要があります。

Now I often hear non-natives putting the verb

今では、母国語

a bit too far at the end of the sentence

でない人

when using the modal 'should'.

がモーダル 'should' を使用する際に、動詞を文末に少し遠ざけているのをよく耳にします。

For example; ''I should now fix the car'',

例えば; 「今すぐ車を修理しなければならない」

or ''I should tomorrow go to work''.

または「明日仕事に行かなければならない」.

Now with the modal 'should',

モーダル「should」

the verb must be present exactly  after you use the word 'should'.

を使用すると、「should」という単語を使用した直後に動詞が存在する必要があります。

For example; I should fix the car today,

例えば; 今日車を修理するか、

or I should go to work tomorrow.

明日仕事に行かなければなりません。

So in even simpler terms,

したがって、さらに簡単に言えば

your sentence should look something like this;

I should _____ and then the verb.

I should _____ そして動詞。

Now, as you may have just seen,

one of the great things  about using these modal verbs

when you are talking in the  present or the future tense.

However, when we're talking in the past tense,

we do need to change things around a little bit.

So two things need to change;

the first, is you need to use the word 'have'

1 つ目は、'should' という単語の直後に 'have' という単語を使用する必要があるということです

directly after the word 'should'.

So, I 'should have'.

And then you must use the past participle

次に、探している動詞の過去分詞を使用する必要があります

of the verb you're looking for.

For example; I should have worked yesterday.

例えば; 私は昨日働くべきだった。

It's important to also say

that you can shorten this to 'should've',

これは、'should've' の短縮形である 'should've' に短縮できることも重要です

which is a shortening of 'should have'.

。

So, I should've worked yesterday.

だから、私は昨日働くべきだった。

Now maybe that's a bit complicated,

少し複雑かもしれ

but what should make things a bit easier for you,

is if you want to use the  negative of should; 'shouldn't',

then all the rules still apply.
