Hey, Ezekiel, what are you up to, old buddy?

Hi, James from EngVid.

I just came in the room and Ezekiel's playing darts.

It's when you take a sharp object and you throw it at a chart and get points.

But Ezekiel's chart is made up of all these little things here.

And it seems to me Ezekiel is wondering about his relationship.

In English, we have many different terms to talk about the state of our relationship.

Some are good, some are bad.

And what we want to do today is look at how you can talk about your relationship

and give people the idea and let them know what's going on in it.

Okay?

So let's go to the board.

Now, please be advised, these words are dangerous and must be used with adult mind.

Okay?

For instance, how about we start off with the good ones?

And for you ladies out there, okay, Ezekiel, well, he's taken.

Taken means, if you say I'm taken, he's taken, she's taken,

I already am in a relationship and I'm happy.

Or they are in a relationship, usually taken because they're no longer on the market.

We call the market when everybody's single, looking like for food, hungry.

Okay?

But when you're taken, you're off of the market, you're cool, you're good.

Usually happy if they're taken because otherwise we'll use some of these other ones to explain.

So taken means in a relationship.

We're dating.

We're dating.

Now, there's a stage in a relationship where you first go out a couple of times,

you meet the person for the first time, you say hi, my name's James, hi, my name's Ezekiel.

I think he's a boy, so it wouldn't happen, okay.

But, you know, hi, my name's Janice.

Hi, Janice and James.

You go out on a couple of dates.

That's not dating.

People say that's dating, it's not dating because you're getting to know each other.

But after a while, when you go, you know what, I really like you, you say, let's go out.

Let's be boyfriend and girlfriend.

Then you say, we're dating.

This is before engagement and it's not as strong as engagement,

but it means we're dating as in we're past the initial, the beginning stages,

and now we're quite comfortable with each other and we're going to refer to each other as, you know,

my partner, girlfriend, or boyfriend.

We're dating, okay.

Dating.

Seeing each other.

Some people confuse seeing each other with dating.

They think seeing each other and dating are the same.

They're not really.

If you're seeing someone, you don't have to have the relationship of girlfriend and boyfriend,

but you could have a sexual or intimate relationship.

Yes, I said sexual.

Because sometimes people are seeing each other, but they're like, well, we're not girlfriend and boyfriend or anything,

but they're, you know, they're together in another way, right?

And they're saying, but, you know, we have a relationship that's more than a friendship,

so we're seeing each other.

But some people also do mean it for dating, like we're seeing each other as in dating.

So be careful and check for context.

If the guy's like, hey, I'm seeing her, they're not dating, they're not girlfriend and boyfriend.

They're like, yes, I'm seeing her.

She's my girlfriend, girlfriend, boyfriend.

Okay, so watch for context.

Because sometimes it means just sex, and other times it means dating.

We hooked up.

Speaking of sex, if you say we hooked up, you could be talking about a long-term relationship,

and you're talking about meeting in the past.

We hooked up, got together, and now we're together.

We hooked up, I went to the bar, got drunk, met another person who was drunk and had sex.

We hooked up last night.

We hooked up last year, and we've been together ever since.

Long-term committed relationship.

You may notice when I say long-term committed relationship, I have a painful look on my face.

It's like prison time, okay?

And that one is the next one.

We're in a long-term committed relationship.

It means we're not married because I'm too cheap to buy the ring, but we are together for a long time.

I'm joking.

But ladies, if you say that, it means you seriously care about your boyfriend.

And if you ever hear your boyfriend saying that, he's probably in trouble and wants to look good.

Men usually say we're dating.

To say we're in a long-term committed relationship takes too much brain power for your average man,

so we usually don't say that.

We say we're dating or we're going out or we're seeing each other, okay?

But this is like close to marriage.

It puts me to sleep.

Next, the piece de resistance of my personal favorite, Ezekiel.

High five.

His too.

We're in an open relationship means, yes, I have a girlfriend or boyfriend,

but they don't mind if I have sex with other people.

In fact, they're having sex with someone right now.

So if someone says to you they're in an open relationship,

they're trying to tell you that if you want, they'll have sex with you.

Yeah, really.

Okay?

And they won't get in trouble because their girlfriend or boyfriend thinks it's okay.

So if somebody says that to you and you don't want that, run.

Okay?

And, you know, if you like them and they say let's have an open relationship,

that's what they're trying to tell you.

I want to have sex with you and as many people on the planet as possible.

That's right.

So they're going to go traveling.

Now, if you looked at this, these have been kind of like a good--I know--

but they're still in a relationship.

It's good.

These are good things.

This is a strong one.

This means we got together.

But careful.

Context.

We hooked up last night.

Sex.

We hooked up two years ago.

Maybe sex.

But we're still going out.

Definitely long-term relationship.

We're dating.

She's taken.

Means I'm in a relationship and I'm pretty happy.

I'm happy about it.

Okay?

This one committed.

She'd be committed.

You know?

Insane asylum.

Okay.

Next one.

How about these ones?

Now we have six.

Ezekiel still has to throw that dart and see where his relationship is at.

Is he committed in a relationship or she ended it?

Well, we know end means over, right?

Well, she ended it.

You're no longer going out.

You're single.

You don't have to say I'm in an open relationship.

You are.

Anyway.

She or she ended it.

They ended our relationship.

How about this one?

It's over.

Right?

You usually say that when it may not be ended just yet, but something has happened in the

relationship.

You're not happy and you just decided this is not going to work for anymore.

It's over.

I cannot go back with him.

I'll have to end it.

So this could be just before ending it or it could be it's over.

Someone has a relationship.

It's over.

It's finished.

It's completed.

Or you can use it to say you will end the relationship because what you've discovered

is too bad or too hurtful to continue.

Right?

I found her with my best friend and his dog.

It's over.

Right?

Now I have to go and end it with her.

Okay?

Cool.

How about this one?

We're on a break.

Okay.

I've got to be honest.

Most women don't like this and men don't like it either.

Okay?

We're in an open relationship.

Some people say we're on a break and they mean we're in an open relationship.

What do I mean?

We're on a break means I told my girlfriend or boyfriend officially we're not dating

right now but later on I will come back so in between I can do whatever I like and it's

okay.

So if someone says, you know, we're on a break right now.

We're having some difficulties.

They're saying I'm allowed to have sex with anybody I like but later on I will go

back to my partner.

So be very careful because if you want a long term committed relationship with this person

they're telling you it won't happen because I will go back to my partner.

But for now we can have all the peep peep we want.

Okay?

Cool.

How about this?

She cheated on me.

The word cheat means to break the rules.

On a test you have to do your own test.

You cannot look at somebody else's work.

That's called cheating.

You break the rules.

If people are running a race and they fire a gun but before they fire and you start running

you're cheating.

You have to wait for the gun.

In a relationship there are only two people.

If there's somebody else like Ezekiel standing over here you cannot go over with Ezekiel.

Bad.

Cheating.

You have to be here.

This person has sex with somebody else.

They cheated on me.

So if somebody has cheated on you they have broken the rules and had sex outside of your

relationship.

Bad.

This is why it's red.

Don't do it.

Speaking about cheating.

You can cheat on somebody once.

You can cheat on somebody twice.

If you're sleeping around.

Around is a preposition which means you know it's around.

It's approximate or it's all over the place.

If somebody's sleeping around they're doing this.

All over the place.

Meaning they're having constant sex and they're cheating a lot on you.

Everywhere.

They were sleeping around means they've had more sexual partners than one.

I don't know.

Who knows.

Maybe twenty times.

Maybe ten times.

But more than one.

Definitely.

Okay.

Otherwise they cheated one time.

They're sleeping around.

You need to get.

Kick them to the curb.

That's another one.

We didn't put that.

Kick them to the curb means get rid of them.

Okay.

He dumped me.

Well, garbage.

When you have garbage in your house or if you're English.

Trash or you know the trash bin or rubbish.

You have to take it and you have to throw it away.

We call that dumping it.

Dumping it outside or getting rid of things.

When you don't want it.

When you want to get rid of something.

You dump it.

Throw it out.

Right.

Throw it out.

So if somebody dumps you it means they've thrown you away like garbage.

You're gone.

What do you mean you don't love me anymore?

What do you mean you're dumping me?

Ah.

See.

Throw me away.

Okay.

I'm no good anymore.

And we broke up.

Well, break.

If you have something and you break it.

They're no longer together.

Right.

You broke the table.

Broke.

Break.

So we broke up.

We're no longer together.

Unfortunately, I don't know how Ezekiel feels.

Right now.

I'm going to have to say it's over.

I'm going to end it.

I'm going to leave.

I'm not dumping you.

By the way.

I just have to break up this particular lesson and teach another one.

So I'm going to get going.

But hey.

We've hooked up now.
