Get SMART and Get Results in English

Hi guys, this is Christina and you’re watching Speak Better, Feel Great TV. The place to

boost your English and boost your career. It’s not always easy to know how to organize

your time and your work in English to get results. At the same time, we all know how

important it is for staying motivated. That’s why today, I’ll show you how

you can get clear results regularly, every week even, and how to be smart about setting your English objectives.

Ya ready?

“Become fluent”, “understand better”, “improve my English”. These are all great

aspirations, but at the same time, they’re not concrete objectives. It takes years to

become fluent, and you can always continue to improve. Keep those big goals in mind,

but to see progress, be organized, and stay motivated, get SMART about your objectives.

SMART goals. Maybe you’ve heard of them. Maybe you already use them for your projects.

SMART goals are good for projects and great for English.

What are SMART goals?

SMART means intelligent. And it’s also an acronym for

Let’s look at how you can fix SMART goals and begin seeing immediate progress in English.

Pick a really specific, small goal. For example,

“Understand my Indian colleague better

when he gives me a status report on a project.”

That’s pretty specific, so it’s perfect.

You need a way to evaluate if you’ve reached your goal.

How will you measure it?

In the above example, you can plan a call with your Indian colleague, then evaluate

how well you understood him. Your feelings can be a good evaluation.

Think about HOW you'll achieve your goal. Will you listen to recordings of

Indian accents every day? Call your Indian colleague once a day? Study the vocabulary

typically used in a status report to help you guess when you don’t understand?

Then, create a plan to help you reach the goal.

Don’t expect perfection. Be realistic.

If you feel you can understand half of what

your Indian colleague says, aim to understand a bit more. Don’t aim to understand 100%.

That’s not realistic.

Fix a deadline for yourself. For this example, your deadline could be your

next status report with your Indian colleague.

You could also set a deadline like “in 2 weeks.”

Deadlines almost force you to do things.

Also, put your English time in your calendar.

Plan it, and you’re more likely to do it.
