Learn the English Phrases CREAM OF THE CROP and BEST OF THE BEST - An English Lesson with Subtitles

So today, I wanted to help you learn

the English phrase cream of the crop.

Now, cream is something that rises to the top

when you have milk.

The cream is like the buttery, fatty part of the milk,

and it rises to the top.

Some think it's the best part of the milk,

and a crop is something like this hayfield behind me

or the soybean field in the distance.

The crop is what you harvest when it is ripe.

The cream of the crop, though,

is a phrase we use to describe the people

or things that are the best in a group.

So when you have a company and you want to hire people,

you want to hire the cream of the crop.

You want to hire people who are graduating from school

with the highest grades,

so you want to get the best students

as people who are working for your business.

You want to hire the cream of the crop.

So the cream of the crop is the phrase we use to describe

the best part of a group of people or of a group of things,

but what if you hire the cream of the crop and then,

within the cream of the crop,

you want to find who is the best.

You would call them the best of the best.

So you've already hired the cream of the crop.

You've already got the best people.

You hired the smartest people.

Now, within that group of people,

you want to find out who is the best of the best.

So the cream of the crop would be the best people

in a group of people in terms of how well they do

in school or how well they do at work,

or it would be the best things in a group of things

that you would have, and the best of the best would be

within that cream of the crop,

who is better than everyone else.

I'm not sure I'm doing a good job of explaining this.
