A Big Announcement and Learn the English Phrase SHIFTING GEARS

I wanted to help you

learn the English phrase shifting gears.

Shifting gears is a phrase that we use

when we are making a change in life.

Originally, this comes from driving a vehicle,

sometimes you're in first gear and then second gear

and then third gear,

but we've now started to use this

to describe when we make a change in life.

Maybe you are a doctor

and you decide after years of being a doctor

that you don't want to be a doctor anymore,

that you want to be someone

who teaches other people to be doctors.

So we could say that you are shifting gears,

you are making a change in your life.

Maybe you are in school

and you're studying to be an auto mechanic

and you decide that you no longer want to study

to be an auto mechanic,

you might change your mind,

you might shift gears.

So we would say you are shifting gears

and learning to do something else.

The reason I'm talking about shifting gears

is because things are changing on this YouTube channel

and you might also be watching this on Instagram

or on Facebook.

I'm going to make some changes.

Normally, oh wait,

I should talk about the other phrase for a minute.

The other phrase I have is the more things change,

the more they stay the same.

This is a phrase we use in English sometimes

when we talk about things that are changing.

And sometimes people aren't happy when things are changing,

but the reality is,

the truth is that when things change,

often times they remain quite similar

or they don't change a whole lot.

So let's talk about this YouTube channel,

or if you are a follower on Instagram

or if you are following me on Facebook,

let's talk about how

these English lessons are going to change.

First of all,

you'll notice I'm shooting horizontally

instead of vertically,

that's one change,

I hope that's okay with everybody.

The first two minutes of the video everyday,

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday

will be exactly the same.

I will teach you English phrases,

English idioms and English sayings,

so nothing will change there.

There will be the same number of videos.

Every video will have English word for word subtitles

if you need them.

On YouTube and on Facebook you can turn them on,

on Instagram I will actually put the subtitles

right on the screen for you,

so that's not changing either.

But what is changing

is that after I teach one or two English phrases,

after the first two minutes of the video,

the video will be a bit longer.

And the segment that I'm adding

is that I will answer a question everyday

that I find in the comments of a previous video.

I will usually answer questions from members,

by the way,

if you did want to be a member of this channel,

there is a join button down there somewhere.

But sometimes I will also answer questions

from people who are non-members.

And if at the very least you are not a subscriber,

please consider subscribing to the channel.

So the more things change,

the more they stay the same.

There are some things changing with these English lessons,

but not a whole lot.

The first two minutes is the same,

actually if you're watching on Instagram,

you are now getting a much longer video,

which is one of the reasons why I'm making this change.

But let me talk about the last segment.

The last segment,

I will actually read a question from someone

who has left a question in a previous comment.

Today's question is from Elena,

hello Elena, thank you for being a supporter of my channel.

Elena's question is not actually a question,

it's more of a statement,

but here we go.

Elena says, "Thanks teacher Bob for the great video.

"Thanks to you and Brent,

"Learn American English With This Guy,

"I'm always motivated to learn English."

By the way, Brent,

who is Learn American English With This Guy on YouTube,

also makes great English lessons.

If you want to go and find his channel,

you should do that.

Elena continues and says,

"And I promise to carry on learning it

"until I speak as if I'm a native English speaker."

Well, Elena, I think you are on the right track.

I think watching YouTube videos

and learning from people on YouTube

is a great start to becoming completely fluent

in the English language.

Speaking of length,

it is now almost four minutes into the video.

My plan would be that these videos

are about three to four minutes long

and occasionally five minutes long,

and no longer.

I still want them to be short English lessons

that you can learn very easily.
