Learn the English Phrases TO FIRE UP and TO BE FIRED UP - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

In this English lesson I wanted

to help you learn the English phrase, to fire up.

When you say that you are going

to fire something up in English,

it simply means that you are going to turn it on.

Let's say that my computer was off

and I wanted to send an email to someone,

or maybe I just want to check my email.

I could say, I'm going to fire up my computer

so that I can check my email.

Let's say that your brother and you are working on a car

and you've just changed the oil.

Your brother might say to you,

"Hey, just jump in and fire it up for a second.

"Let's make sure everything is running right."

So when you fire something up in English,

when you turn something on,

you can describe it by saying that you are going

to fire it up.

This is different though, than the phrase to be fired up.

Remember a couple of days ago,

I did the phrase to be fired up.

In English, if you say that you are fired up

about something, it means that you're excited to do it.

I'm always fired up to make a new English lesson

for all of you.

So again, just so you know the difference,

when you fire something up,

it means that you are turning it on.

Earlier, I fired up my camera just

to set everything properly,

so I could make this video,

because I was fired up at the time

to make a little English lesson for you.

Should I repeat that one more time?

Earlier I fired up my camera.

So that means my camera was off and I turned it on,

because I was fired up to make a video for you.

That means I was excited to make a little English lesson

for all of you, so you can learn a bit more English.

Anyways, hopefully you understand the difference

between those two things.

Sorry, I'm a little distracted today

because it's very, very windy out here,

I'll show you that in a moment.

But first we should look at a comment

from one of the previous videos.

This is from the lesson where I explained the phrase,

the calm before the storm

and this is from Julia Olis.

Julia says, "I love the calm before the storm

"when it comes to weather.

"Nature is gorgeous at that moment

"and you can feel the hidden power in that calmness."

I agree by the way.

"When it comes to political or economic situations though,

"or the pandemic situation, it's not good at all."

And then my response was,

very true nature is one of my favorite things.

I like the calm and the storms,

but when it comes to calm and storms

with politics and pandemics, not so much.

So anyways, Julia, thank you so much for that comment,

I agree with you completely.

Nature has this gorgeous element about it.

When it's calm before a storm,

there's a lot of beauty in that.

And then when it gets really stormy,

there's a lot of beauty in that as well.

In life though, I would say not so much.

I would say I would have a different opinion.

I don't like it when in politics

or in the economy or with pandemics,

when there is a calm before there is a storm,

it's just not a very nice time.

But speaking of calm before the storm,

it's actually not very calm here right now.

Let me just up and let me just give you kind of a look

at what's happening here right now.

The audio might get a little bit bad

while I'm walking out here

because it's extremely windy right now.

In fact, I'm having trouble holding the cameras still.

I'm also walking through some weeds,

that doesn't help either.

But if you look out here,

you'll see that it's extremely windy outside right now.

There's small waves on the river,

they've gotten a little bit smaller now, so not huge,

but you can see across the river.

Maybe you can see, let me zoom in for you.

You can see across the river, the trees are moving

in the wind a little bit.

So hopefully the audio of this portion of the video is okay,

and you can actually hear me, but yes,

we are certainly experiencing the storm part right now.

It has been raining about every hour here

for the last little while.

So the calm part is over and we're now definitely

in the storm part.
