Needn't vs No need to - English In A Minute

'You needn't worry about the exam,

you've studied lots.'

They're the same right? Maybe 'needn't'

Sono la stessa cosa vero? Forse 'need't'

is a little bit more formal, but the meaning

è un po' più formale, ma il significato

is that there is 'no necessity for you to worry'.

è che 'non c'è bisogno che tu ti preoccupi'.

Now look at these two sentences in the past:

Ora guarda queste due frasi al passato:

'He didn't need to worry about the exam.

'Non aveva bisogno di preoccuparsi per l'esame.

He had already passed the course.'

Aveva già superato il corso».

'He needn't have worried about the exam.

«Non doveva preoccuparsi per l'esame.

It was really easy.'

È stato davvero facile.'

These are different! In the first sentence,

he had already passed the course, so he knew

aveva già superato il corso, quindi sapeva che

he 'didn’t need to' worry.

"non doveva" preoccuparsi.

In the second sentence, he didn't know the

exam was going to be easy, so he was worried,

but he 'needn't have been'.

ma "non avrebbe dovuto esserlo".
