'Unless' vs 'As long as': What's the difference? English In A Minute

Unless and 'as long as' can be used to replace 'if'

Let's have a look at some example sentences:

Diamo un'occhiata ad alcune frasi di esempio:

I will go to the party if you come too.

verrò alla festa se vieni anche tu.

I will go to the party as long as you come too.

Verrò alla festa purché tu venga anche tu.

Both of these sentences have the same meaning.

Entrambe queste frasi hanno lo stesso significato.

Notice that the verb after 'if' and 'as long as' is positive.

Si noti che il verbo dopo "if" e "purché" è positivo.

Now look at these sentences:

Ora guarda queste frasi:

If you don't do your homework, you can't watch the film.

Se non fai i compiti, non puoi guardare il film.

Unless you do your homework, you can't watch the film.

Se non fai i compiti, non puoi guardare il film.

Both of these sentences have the same meaning.

But notice that the verb after 'if' is negative
