Still vs Already vs Yet - English In A Minute

Today, I'm going to tell you the difference between

Oggi vi dirò la differenza tra

'still', 'already' and 'yet'.

"ancora", "già" e "ancora".

They all talk about things around the present,

Parlano tutti di cose del presente,

but they don't mean the same.

ma non hanno lo stesso significato.

We use 'still' to talk about something

Usiamo 'still' per parlare di qualcosa

that hasn't finished.

che non è finito.

Are you still studying? Let's go out!

Stai ancora studiando? Andiamo fuori!

We use 'already' to talk about something that

Usiamo 'already' per parlare di qualcosa che

has finished,

è finito,

and maybe we didn't think it would have by now.

e forse non pensavamo che lo sarebbe ormai.

She's already finished work. She's gone home.

Ha già finito di lavorare. È andata a casa.

We use 'yet' in questions and negatives

Usiamo "ancora" nelle domande e nei commenti negativi

to talk about things that haven't happened,

per parlare di cose che non sono accadute,

but we think they will.

ma pensiamo che accadranno.

Haven't you left yet? You'll be late!

Non sei ancora partito? Sarai in ritardo!

So just remember:

Things that are 'still' happening, haven't finished.

le cose che stanno "ancora" accadendo, non sono finite.

Things that have 'already' happened, have finished

Le cose che sono 'già' accadute, sono finite

and things that are 'yet' to happen, haven't started.

e le cose che devono 'ancora' accadere, non sono cominciate.
