By vs Until - English In A Minute

and today I'm going to tell you the differences

y hoy les voy a contar las diferencias

between 'until' and 'by'.

entre 'hasta' y 'por'.

We use 'until' to talk about doing something

Usamos 'hasta' para hablar de hacer algo

up to a certain point in time.

hasta cierto punto en el tiempo.

If I say:

Si digo:

I have to take care of my dog until 5pm,

tengo que cuidar a mi perro hasta las 5 p. m.

it means I will start taking care of my dog now

, significa que comenzaré a cuidar a mi perro ahora

and stop taking care of it at 5pm.

y dejaré de cuidarlo a las 5 p. m.

On the other hand,

Por otro lado,

we use 'by' to talk about doing something

usamos 'by' para hablar de hacer algo

before a future time or deadline.

antes de un tiempo o fecha límite futura.

If I say:

Si digo:

I have to finish an essay by 5pm,

tengo que terminar un ensayo a las 5:00 p. m.

it means I can start any time

, significa que puedo comenzar en cualquier momento,

but I will make sure that at 5pm

pero me aseguraré de que a las 5:00 p

I have finished writing the essay.

. m. haya terminado de escribir el ensayo.

So, I may even finish it at 3pm or any time before 5.

So we use 'until' to describe doing something
