English conversation tips | Present Perfect: Use it confidently!

Should we say:

Devemos dizer:

I've lived here for 10 months or, I've been living here for 10 months.

moro aqui há 10 meses ou moro aqui há 10 meses.

Do 'I've lived' and 'I've been living' mean the same thing or are they different?

'Eu vivi' e 'eu vivi' significam a mesma coisa ou são diferentes?

The answer is a bit tricky.

A resposta é um pouco complicada.

I have been doing and I have done.

Eu tenho feito e tenho feito.

The rule I teach for I have been doing is action that continues from the past until now.

A regra que ensino porque tenho feito é uma ação que continua desde o passado até agora.

For example:

I've been reading reports for an hour.

Por exemplo:

estou lendo relatórios há uma hora.

The rule I teach for I have done is an  action completed before now.

A regra que ensino porque fiz é uma ação concluída antes.

For example:

Por exemplo:

I have already read two reports.

já li dois relatórios.

Now, why do you think I have underlined 'action'?

Agora, por que você acha que eu sublinhei 'ação'?

It's because I'm sure you know, there are two types of verbs in English.

É porque tenho certeza que você sabe que existem dois tipos de verbos em inglês.

Action verbs and state verbs.

Verbos de ação e verbos de estado.

Examples of action verbs are read, study, walk, etc.

Exemplos de verbos de ação são ler, estudar, andar etc.

And state verbs are verbs like be, have, and know.

E os verbos de estado são verbos como ser, ter e saber.

The main difference is that with an action verb, you can start and stop easily.

A principal diferença é que com um verbo de ação, você pode começar e parar facilmente.

You can start reading, stop reading, start reading again.

Você pode começar a ler, parar de ler, começar a ler de novo.

But, with a state verb, you can't do that.

Mas, com um verbo de estado, você não pode fazer isso.

If you are tired, you are tired.

Se você está cansado, você está cansado.

If you know something, you know it.

Se você sabe de algo, você sabe isso.

You can't easily unknow it.

Você não pode facilmente desconhecer isso.

Now! There's a rule that you have to remember about state  verbs.

Agora! Há uma regra que você precisa lembrar sobre verbos de estado.

And that rule is that you can't put them in a continuous tense.

E essa regra é que você não pode colocá-los em um tempo contínuo.

You can't say:

Você não pode dizer:

I have been having this car for two years.

estou com este carro há dois anos.

Despite the fact that the state of having this  car continues, you cannot use that.

Apesar de o estado de ter este carro continuar, você não pode usá-lo.

You cannot use the Present Perfect Continuous tense.

Você não pode usar o tempo presente perfeito contínuo.

You have to use the Simple tense.

Você precisa usar o tempo simples.

Just Present Perfect.

Apenas Presente Perfeito.

The correct sentence is:

A frase correta é:

I have had this car for two years.

estou com este carro há dois anos.

And another example.

E outro exemplo.

The verb know.

O verbo saber.

You can't say:

Você não pode dizer:

We have been knowing each other for 15 years.

nós nos conhecemos há 15 anos.

You've got to change that back into its Simple form:

Você precisa mudar isso de volta para sua forma Simples:

We have known each other for 15 years.

nos conhecemos há 15 anos.

That brings us to the question:

Isso nos leva à pergunta:

Is live a state verb or an action verb?

viver é um verbo de estado ou um verbo de ação?

What do you think?

The answer is...

it can be both.

pode ser os dois.

It depends on the context.

Depende do contexto.

That's why it's tricky.

So, if you want to state a fact like:

Então, se você quiser declarar um fato como:

I live in Paris,

eu moro em Paris,

we use the Simple form:

usamos a forma Simples:

I live.

eu moro.

Whereas, you can also use the verb 'live' to refer to a  temporary situation.

Visto que você também pode usar o verbo 'viver' para se referir a uma situação temporária.

For example, you can say:

Por exemplo, você pode dizer:

I am currently living with my parents.

Atualmente estou morando com meus pais.

Okay! Let's look at this in the Present Perfect tense:

OK! Vejamos isso no presente perfeito:

I live in Paris.

eu moro em Paris.

A fact!

Um fato!

So, I have lived in Paris for 10 months.

Então, moro em Paris há 10 meses.

I am currently living with my parents.

Atualmente estou morando com meus pais.

Temporary situation at the present moment:

Situação temporária no momento atual:

I have been living with them for a week.

estou morando com eles há uma semana.

So!

The sentences I asked you about at the start of the lesson mean the same thing.

Então!

As frases sobre as quais perguntei no início da lição significam a mesma coisa.

There is no difference.

Não há diferença.

If you say:

Se você diz:

I have been living here for 10 months,

estou morando aqui há 10 meses,

you're talking about an action that continues.

você está falando de uma ação que continua.

If you say:

I have lived here for 10 months,

eu moro aqui há 10 meses,

you're talking about a state that continues.

você está falando de um estado que continua.

So, it's up to you whether you want to refer to live as a state verb or as an action verb.

Portanto, cabe a você decidir se deseja se referir a viver como um verbo de estado ou como um verbo de ação.

Both are correct!

These two sentences mean exactly the same thing.

Essas duas frases significam exatamente a mesma coisa.

But!

I'm sure you're asking me this very good question:

Isn't 'I have lived' a completed action too?

'Eu vivi' também não é uma ação concluída?

It's the Present Perfect. I have done.

É o Present Perfect. Eu fiz.

I just said have done refers to a completed action until now.

Acabei de dizer que fiz refere-se a uma ação concluída até agora.

And the answer is...

Yes! It can be a completed action,

Sim! Pode ser uma ação concluída,

if you're talking about your life experiences until now.

se você estiver falando sobre suas experiências de vida até agora.

For example,

if you say:

I have lived in several big cities.

morei em várias cidades grandes.

Or:

Ou:

I have lived in some horrible flats.

morei em alguns apartamentos horríveis.

These are completed actions.

Estas são ações concluídas.

Completed experiences in your lifetime until now.

Experiências concluídas em sua vida até agora.

And there are other verbs like this.

E há outros verbos como este.

These are verbs that can be an action or a fact.

São verbos que podem ser uma ação ou um fato.

Some examples are:

Alguns exemplos são:

work, play, smoke.

trabalhar, brincar, fumar.

Let's look at some examples with work.

Vejamos alguns exemplos com trabalho.

If you say:

Se você disser:

I've worked for some big companies,

já trabalhei em grandes empresas,

you're referring to some life experiences until now.

está se referindo a algumas experiências de vida até agora.

If you say:

I have worked for this firm for five years,

Se você disser:

trabalho nesta empresa há cinco anos,

you're talking about a state, a fact that still continues.

está falando de um estado, fato que ainda persiste.

And if you're working on a report at the moment,

then it's a temporary situation,

you can say:

I've been working on this report for a week.

Now, this leads to some very common mistakes.

The biggest one I hear a lot of my students make is saying things like this:

I have lived in London for 10 months. Now, I live in Paris.

Obviously, applying the rule that I have lived, I have  done is an action completed in the past,

makes this correct.

But, as you can see it doesn't.

It's confusing.

So, do you live in London or do you live in Paris?

So, remember once again that if you use 'have done' with the preposition 'for' and a length of time,

you are always always talking about a state that continues.

So, I have lived in London for 10 months means you still live in London.

So, what tense should we use for this situation?

So, let's put all of that into a dialogue to make it crystal clear for you,

Here's a typical dialogue.

You've just met someone.

The better tense here is:

You're asking about this fact of their life.

Rather than:

How long have you been living in Paris?

quanto tempo você mora em Paris?

Although, you can say that, and it's not wrong.

These two tenses are interchangeable.

Esses dois tempos são intercambiáveis.

So, what is their answer?

I've lived here for two years,

is the most common answer.

But, again, they can say:

I've been living here for two years.

Right! Let's continue this dialogue.

Let's suppose you want to ask them about some of their life experiences.

Now, you must use the Present Perfect Simple. Right?

Actions completed in the past until now:

Yes! I've lived in Rome and London too.

Now, you want to know how long they lived in London.

You must use the Past Simple!

Don't say:

They don't live there anymore.

So, your question is:

And the answer:
