Is it clear when you should use 'interested' and when you should use 'interesting'.

I have noticed that many of you are still  confusing the 'ed' and 'ing' adjectives.

So, in this short lesson we're  going to look at their usage again.

Okay! Let's start by looking at  what a participle adjective is.

OK! Vamos começar examinando o que é um adjetivo particípio.

A participle adjective, also  called participial adjective,

Um adjetivo particípio, também chamado de adjetivo participial,

is an adjective from a verb root. 

é um adjetivo de uma raiz verbal.

For example the verb 'to interest'  has two participle adjectives:

Por exemplo, o verbo 'interessar' tem dois adjetivos no particípio:

Present Participle 'interesting', and Past Participle 'interested'.

particípio presente 'interessante' e particípio passado 'interessado'.

Okay, let's look at usage now.

Ok, vamos ver o uso agora.

Let's say that the sentence  is: History interests me.

Digamos que a frase seja: A história me interessa. A

History is the subject.

história é o assunto. A

History is generating interest in me.

história está gerando interesse em mim.

So, we should use the Present Participle:  History is interesting.

Portanto, devemos usar o Presente Particípio: História é interessante.

'Me' is the object.

'Eu' é o objeto.

The action is affecting me.

A ação está me afetando.

So, now we should use the Past  Participle: I am interested in history.

Então, agora devemos usar o particípio passado: estou interessado em história.

The most common mistake I  hear is using Present Participle 

O erro mais comum que ouço é usar o particípio presente

'interesting' instead of Past Participle.

'interessante' em vez do particípio passado.

And saying something like:  I'm interesting in history.

E dizendo algo como: sou interessado em história.

That's maybe because you think you're using the Present Continuous tense,

Talvez seja porque você acha que está usando o tempo presente contínuo,

so be careful with this.

então tome cuidado com isso.

So, let's look at two more examples.

Então, vamos ver mais dois exemplos.

First example: John intrigues everyone.

Primeiro exemplo: John intriga a todos.

So here, both the subject  and the object are people. 

Então, aqui, tanto o sujeito quanto o objeto são pessoas.

John and everyone.

João e todos.

So, let's see what you would  choose for the two sentences below.

Então, vamos ver o que você escolheria para as duas frases abaixo.

John is .......

John é .......

And, everyone is ........ by John.

E todo mundo é ........ por John.

John is the subject. So, John is intriguing.

João é o sujeito. Então, John é intrigante.

And 'everyone' is the object. So,  everyone is intrigued by John.

E 'todos' é o objeto. Então, todos estão intrigados com John.

So, for John, which is the subject, we  use the Present Participle 'intriguing'.

Assim, para John, que é o sujeito, usamos o particípio presente 'intrigante'.

And, for 'everyone', which is the object, we use the Past Participle 'intrigued'.

E, para 'everyone', que é o objeto, usamos o particípio passado 'intrigado'.

Let's look at the second example.

Vejamos o segundo exemplo.

This situation upsets her.

Essa situação a perturba.

So, this situation is .........

Então, essa situação é...

And, she is ......... about the situation.

E ela é... sobre a situação.

Which adjective would you put in each sentence?

Qual adjetivo você colocaria em cada frase?

The situation is the subject. So, it is upsetting.

A situação é o assunto. Então, é perturbador.

And, she has been affected by the situation.  So, she is upset about the situation.

E ela foi afetada pela situação. Então, ela está chateada com a situação.

So, for the situation, which is the subject, we use the Present Participle 'upsetting'.

Portanto, para a situação, que é o sujeito, usamos o particípio presente 'desordenado'.

And for her, who is being affected  who is the object of the sentence,  

E para ela, que está sendo afetada, que é o objeto da sentença,

we use the Past Participle 'upset'.

usamos o particípio passado 'chatear'.

Now, remember that 'upset' is an irregular  verb. So, it's upset - upset - upset.

Agora, lembre-se de que 'chatear' é um verbo irregular. Então, está chateado - chateado - chateado.
