Is it clear when you should use 'interested' and when you should use 'interesting'.

「interested」 と「interesting」をいつ使うべきか明確ですか。

I have noticed that many of you are still  confusing the 'ed' and 'ing' adjectives.

「ed」と「ing」という形容詞をまだ混同している人が多いことに気づきました。

So, in this short lesson we're  going to look at their usage again.

Okay! Let's start by looking at  what a participle adjective is.

わかった！ 分詞形容詞とは何かを見てみましょう。

A participle adjective, also  called participial adjective,

分詞形容詞は、分詞形容詞とも 呼ば

is an adjective from a verb root. 

れ、動詞の語根に由来する形容詞です。

For example the verb 'to interest'  has two participle adjectives:

たとえば、動詞「to Interest」に は 2 つの分詞形容詞があります。

Present Participle 'interesting', and Past Participle 'interested'.

現在分詞の「interesting」と 過去分詞の「interested」です。

Okay, let's look at usage now.

さて、使用法を見てみましょう。

Let's say that the sentence  is: History interests me.

文 が「歴史に興味があります」だとしましょう。

History is the subject.

歴史が題材です。

History is generating interest in me.

歴史は私の興味を引き起こしています。

So, we should use the Present Participle:  History is interesting.

したがって、現在分詞を使用する必要 があります。歴史は興味深いものです。

'Me' is the object.

「私」は対象です。

The action is affecting me.

その行動は私に影響を与えています。

So, now we should use the Past  Participle: I am interested in history.

では、過去分詞を使用する必要があり ます。私は歴史に興味があります。

The most common mistake I  hear is using Present Participle 

私が耳にする最も一般的な間違い は

'interesting' instead of Past Participle.

、過去分詞の代わりに現在分詞「興味深い」を使用することです。

And saying something like:  I'm interesting in history.

そして、次のように言います: 私は 歴史に興味があります。

That's maybe because you think you're using the Present Continuous tense,

それはおそらく 、現在進行形を使用していると思わ

so be careful with this.

So, let's look at two more examples.

それでは、さらに 2 つの例を見てみましょう。

First example: John intrigues everyone.

最初の例: ジョンは みんなの興味をそそります。

So here, both the subject  and the object are people. 

ここでは、主語 も目的語も人です。

John and everyone.

ジョンとみんな。

So, let's see what you would  choose for the two sentences below.

それでは、 以下の 2 つの文で何を選択するか見てみましょう。

John is .......

ジョン

And, everyone is ........ by John.

は.......そして、誰もがジョンによって.

John is the subject. So, John is intriguing.

題材はジョン。 だから、ジョンは興味をそそられます。

And 'everyone' is the object. So,  everyone is intrigued by John.

そして「みんな」が対象です。 ですから、 誰もがジョンに興味を持っています。

So, for John, which is the subject, we  use the Present Participle 'intriguing'.

そのため、主語であるジョンについて は、現在分詞 'intriguing' を使用します。

And, for 'everyone', which is the object, we use the Past Participle 'intrigued'.

そして、目的語である「everyone」には 、過去分詞の「intrigued」を使用します。

Let's look at the second example.

2 番目の例を見てみましょう。

This situation upsets her.

この状況は彼女を動揺させます。

So, this situation is .........

それで、この状況は…………

And, she is ......... about the situation.

そして、彼女は…………状況についてです。

Which adjective would you put in each sentence?

各文にどの形容詞を入れますか?

The situation is the subject. So, it is upsetting.

状況が主題です。 だから、それは動揺しています。

And, she has been affected by the situation.  So, she is upset about the situation.

そして、彼女はその状況に影響を受けています。 それで、彼女は状況に腹を立てています。

So, for the situation, which is the subject, we use the Present Participle 'upsetting'.

そのため、主語である状況 については、現在分詞の「動揺」を使用します。

And for her, who is being affected  who is the object of the sentence,  

そして 、文の目的語である影響を受けている彼女

we use the Past Participle 'upset'.

については、過去分詞の「動揺」を使用します。

Now, remember that 'upset' is an irregular  verb. So, it's upset - upset - upset.

ここで、「動揺」は不規則動詞であることを思い出してください 。 だから、それは動揺 - 動揺 - 動揺です。
