Economic or Economical? Politics or Policy? | English Vocabulary Lesson | Part 1

Hello and welcome everyone to this lesson which  is based on some very common vocabulary mistakes

I hear from some of you my students. So, let me  share my screen ... which is here. There we go,

and here are the words, the vocabulary that  I often hear mistakes with, and it concerns

the difference between 'economic & economical',  'historic & historical', 'classic & classical',  

'경제와 경제적', '역사와 역사', '고전과 고전',

and very importantly 'politics & policy. So,  let's start with the first pair, which is  

그리고 매우 중요한 '정치와 정책'의 차이에 관한 것입니다. . 그럼, 첫 번째 쌍인

'economic & economical'. They're both adjectives,  but they have actually very different meanings:  

'경제적 & 경제적'부터 시작하겠습니다. 둘 다 형용사이지만 실제로는 매우 다른 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

'economic' means 'related to the economy',  which is a country's industry and trade system,  

'경제적'은 국가의 산업 및 무역 시스템인 '경제와 관련된'을 의미합니다.

for example: 'The country's economic situation  is worsening.' There are two related words to  

예를 들어 '국가의 경제 상황이 악화되고 있습니다.' '경제'에는 올바르게 알고 사용하는 것이 중요한 두 가지 관련 단어가 있는데,

'economic' which are important for you to know and  use correctly, and these are 'economics', which is  

the subject of study related to the economy,  and 'economist', which is a person, an expert,  

경제와 관련된 연구 주제인 ' 경제학'과 사람, 전문가를 의미하는 '경제학자'입니다. ,

in the field of economics. Notice the difference  in pronunciation (word stress): economics and  

경제학 분야에서. 발음(단어 강세)의 차이에 주목하세요: 경제학과

economist. So, these words... Also, it's always  good to review the pronunciation from a word  

경제학자. 그럼 이 단어들은... 그리고 항상 단어 강세 관점에서 발음을 복습하는 것이 좋습니다

stress point of view. So, that's 'economic'.  What about 'economical'? Now, 'economical'  

. 그래서 '경제적'이다. '경제적'은 어떻습니까? 이제 '경제적'이라는 말은

has a completely different meaning. It means  'not costing a lot of money', for example:  

완전히 다른 의미를 갖습니다. 이는 '많은 비용이 들지 않음'을 의미합니다. 예:

'Is solar energy more economical than fossil  fuels?' So, it's more or less like 'cheaper',  

'태양 에너지가 화석 연료보다 더 경제적인가요 ?' 그래서, 그것은 다소 '저렴한'과 비슷합니다. 이 아이디어와

and there is an interesting expression related  to this idea, and that is a 'false economy',

and that means 'something that costs less now  but will cost more in the long run', for example:

'Buying a cheap car is always a false economy.'  And, the last thing to say about these two words

is the adverb. The adverb form 'economically'  is used for both meanings. So, let's have two

examples: 'Economically (that's the first meaning  related to the economy of a country), the country

is facing huge challenges. Second example related  to 'not costing very much': 'My savings are

growing because I've been living economically.'  Also for pronunciation, notice that it is not  

경제적으로 살아왔기 때문에 저축이 늘어나고 있습니다.' 또한 발음의 경우 '경제적'이 아니라는 점에 유의하세요

'economiCALLY'. Many of you make this mistake of  pronouncing 'C-A-L-L-Y' as 'kally'. It's 'cli':

economically. Right, so bear that in mind because  it's important for the other words as well. Right,

that's this pair. Let's look at 'historic' and  'historical'. Again, they're both adjectives.

They're both related to history, so similar  meanings but slightly different. 'historic'

means 'important in history'. So, it's related  to history, but it also has the connotation of  

역사에서 중요한'을 의미합니다. 따라서 역사와 관련이 있지만

being very important, very big, for example: 'The  fall of the Berlin Wall was a historic occasion.'  

매우 중요하고 큰 의미도 있습니다. 예를 들어 ' 베를린 장벽의 붕괴는 역사적인 사건이었습니다.'

'historical' just means 'related' to history,  'related to things from the past', for example:  

'역사적'은 단지 역사와 '관련된',  ' 과거의 일과 관련된'을 의미합니다. 예:

'I enjoy watching historical movies.' And, there  is an adverb form 'historically', but it's mainly  

'나는 역사 영화 보는 것을 좋아합니다.' 그리고, '역사적으로'라는 부사 형태도 있지만 주로 과거

used for the second meaning related to things in  the past, for example: 'This book is not always

historically accurate.' That brings us to the next  pair, which is 'classic' and 'classical': again

both adjectives, but with different meanings.  Actually, 'classic' has two meanings. The first

one means 'of high quality thanks to a traditional  style', for example: 'This is a classic car from

the 1950s.' And, the second meaning of 'classic'  is 'typical'. It's a synonym for 'typical',

for example you say: 'This is a classic mistake  many CEOs make, a typical mistake.' It's a strange

meaning, but that's a second meaning. Now, let's  look at 'classical'. 'classical' refers to art

forms that belong to a long tradition, for  example: 'Beethoven is my favourite classical

composer.' There is an adverb 'classically', but  it is again mainly used for this second meaning,

which is for example : 'She's a classically  trained ballet dancer.' O.K. Let's look at

the last pair. ... Lots of mistakes here that  I've noticed from many different students. So,

let's be very careful with these two words:  'politics' and 'policy'. They are nouns. Now  

'정치'와 '정책'이라는 두 단어에 매우 주의하도록 합시다. 그들은 명사입니다. 이제

looking at 'politics'. 'politics' refers to the  activities of a government or the study of such  

'정치'를 살펴보겠습니다. '정치'는 정부의 활동이나 그러한

activities, for example: 'I'm not particularly  interested in politics.' or 'He's going to study  

활동에 대한 연구를 의미합니다. 예를 들어 '나는 정치에 특별히 관심이 없습니다.' 또는 '그는

politics at university.' It's very important  to remember this point: The adjective form  

대학에서 정치를 공부할 예정입니다.' 이 점을 기억하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

of 'politics' is 'political' NOT 'politic'. The  word 'politic' doesn't exist (unlike 'economic,  

'politics'의 형용사 형태는 'politic'이 아니라 'political'입니다. '정치적'이라는 단어는 존재하지 않습니다('경제적,

classic, and historic). This word doesn't exist in  English, so don't use it, for example don't say:  

고전적, 역사적과는 달리). 이 단어는 영어로 존재하지 않으므로 사용하지 마세요. 예를 들어 다음과 같이 말하지 마세요.

'I try to avoid politic discussions.' It's always:  'I try to avoid political discussions.' It's the  

'정치적 논의를 피하려고 노력합니다.' 항상 '나는 정치적인 논의를 피하려고 노력합니다.'

only adjective form for the word 'politics'. There  is an adverb form 'politically' obviously. So,  

'정치'라는 단어의 유일한 형용사 형태입니다. 분명히 '정치적으로'라는 부사 형태가 있습니다.

for example: 'I try to avoid politically  sensitive topics.' Notice again the pronunciation:  

예를 들어 '나는 정치적으로 민감한 주제를 피하려고 노력합니다 .' 발음에 다시 한 번 주목하세요.

Not 'kally', but 'kli'. It's 'politically'. So,  we had: economically, historically, classically,  

'kally'가 아니라 'kli'입니다. 바로 '정치적'이다. 그래서, 우리는 경제적으로, 역사적으로, 고전적으로,

and now politically. Important, and also, this  is another mistake I often hear: a person who is

involved in politics is a politician, again  not a politic! So, for example don't say:

'She's lost her trust in all politics.' It's:  'She's lost her trust in all politicians.' And,

that brings us to the last word, which is  'policy'. What is 'policy'? 'policy' refers to a

set of rules or plans that governs the activities  of a government or a company or an organization,

so for example: 'The focus of the Prime Minister's  speech was foreign policy.', not foreign politics.

That's the mistake you need to avoid. Or: 'These  company policies, not these company politics.  

그것이 당신이 피해야 할 실수입니다. 또는: ' 회사 정책이 아닌 회사 정책입니다.

'These company policies are outdated and need to  changed.' O.K. that brings us to the end of the
