So, in today's lesson we're going to clear up the  confusion many of us experience with the words:

Which of these four answers do you think are the best?

The best ones are 'a' and 'b'.

Les meilleurs sont 'a' et 'b'.

'Good thanks' and 'very well thank you'.

'Bon merci' et 'très bien merci'.

Although you may hear the other two as well sometimes,

Bien que vous puissiez parfois entendre les deux autres,

'a' and 'b' are the better ones.

"a" et "b" sont les meilleurs.

Let's see why.

Let's start by looking at when to use 'good'.

Commençons par regarder quand utiliser "bien".

'Good' is an adjective and is used to describe  a noun which can be something or someone.

"Bon" est un adjectif utilisé pour décrire un nom qui peut être quelque chose ou quelqu'un.

For example:

Par exemple :

This approach is good. Here, 'good' is describing something,

Cette approche est bonne. Ici, « bon » décrit quelque chose,

an approach.

une approche.

Or...

Ou...

Linda is a good employee.

Linda est une bonne employée.

Here, good is describing someone.

Ici, bien décrit quelqu'un.

Linda.

Linda.

So when someone greets you by  saying:

Ainsi, lorsque quelqu'un vous salue en vous disant :

Hi, how are you doing?

Bonjour, comment allez-vous ?

Or...

Ou...

Hello, how are you?

Bonjour, comment allez-vous ?

You can describe your state by using good.

Vous pouvez décrire votre état en utilisant good.

'I'm good'.

'Je vais bien'.

You're describing yourself.

Vous vous décrivez.

'I'

"Je"

You can also say: 'I'm fine',

Vous pouvez également dire : "Je vais bien",

which means you are in good health and or in a good mood.

ce qui signifie que vous êtes en bonne santé et/ou de bonne humeur.

Now in informal English, in response to  'how are you doing?' you may sometimes hear:

Maintenant, en anglais informel, en réponse à "comment ça va ?" vous pouvez parfois entendre :

'I'm doing good'.

« Je vais bien ».

But, because good is not an adverb,

Mais comme bon n'est pas un adverbe,

This sentence is grammatically incorrect.

cette phrase est grammaticalement incorrecte.

If you want to use 'i'm doing' in your reply,

Si vous souhaitez utiliser "je vais bien" dans votre réponse,

it's better to use 'fine'

il est préférable d'utiliser "bien",

because fine is both an adjective and an adverb.

car bien est à la fois un adjectif et un adverbe.

So, instead of saying 'I'm doing good' say:

Donc, au lieu de dire "je vais bien", dites :

'I'm doing fine'.

"je vais bien".

Okay! Let's look at how to use 'well'.

D'accord! Regardons comment utiliser "bien".

Well is the adverb form of good.

Well est la forme adverbiale de good.

As an adverb, it describes an action.

En tant qu'adverbe, il décrit une action.

'This approach works'.

"Cette approche fonctionne".

Works is a verb an action.

Works est un verbe une action.

'well'.

'bien'.

Linda has done her job

Linda a fait son travail

'done' is an action

"fait" est donc une action

therefore, 'well'.

, "bien".

But well is also an adjective which means  not ill or in good health.

Mais bien est aussi un adjectif qui signifie ni malade ni en bonne santé.

So you can also say:

Ainsi, vous pouvez également dire :

'I'm well'.

"Je vais bien".

Here your reply is specifically in the  context of your health rather than your mood.

Ici, votre réponse est spécifiquement dans le contexte de votre santé plutôt que de votre humeur.

So, when someone greets you by saying:

Ainsi, lorsque quelqu'un vous salue en disant :

'how are you' or? 'how are you doing?' you can say:

"Comment allez-vous ?" ou ? 'Comment ça va?' vous pouvez dire :

'I'm very well thank you.'

"Je vais très bien, merci".

Or 'very well, thank you'

Ou "très bien, merci".

But these days the most common answers are:

Mais de nos jours, les réponses les plus courantes sont :

'I'm good thanks.'

"je vais bien, merci".

'Fine, thank you.'

'Bien, merci.'

And if someone asks you specifically about how you're recovering from an illness or succeeding in a task

Et si quelqu'un vous demande spécifiquement comment vous vous rétablissez d'une maladie ou réussissez une tâche,

then you can answer:

vous pouvez répondre :

'I'm doing well' or 'I'm doing fine.'

"Je vais bien" ou "Je vais bien".

Right! it's time for our final quiz.

I'd like you to decide if there's a mistake  in the sentence, and if there is, correct it.

'how's your son doing at school?'

"Comment va votre fils à l'école ?"

'He's doing good.'

"Il va bien."

Is this correct?

Est-ce correct?

No it isn't because we're asking about someone's  performance at school.

Non, ce n'est pas parce que nous posons des questions sur les performances de quelqu'un à l'école.

So, we shouldn't use the adjective 'good' but the adverb 'well'.

Donc, il ne faut pas utiliser l'adjectif 'bon' mais l'adverbe 'bien'.

'How's your son doing at school?'

"Comment va votre fils à l'école ?"

'He's doing well.'

"Il va bien."

Number 2:

Numéro 2 :

How's your mum? I heard she was ill.

Comment va ta mère ? J'ai entendu dire qu'elle était malade.

'She's good again'.

"Elle est de nouveau bonne".

Is this correct?

Est-ce correct?

Again, it is not correct.

Encore une fois, ce n'est pas correct.

It's incorrect because we are asking about someone's health,

C'est incorrect, car nous posons des questions sur la santé de quelqu'un

and therefore, we can't use the word 'good'.

et, par conséquent, nous ne pouvons pas utiliser le mot "bonne".

But the adjective 'well'. 'She's well again'.

Mais l'adjectif 'bien'. "Elle va bien à nouveau".

And the last one.

Et la dernière.

Number 3:

Numéro 3 :

'Hi, how are you all doing?'

'Salut, comment allez-vous ?'

'We're all good, thanks.'

« Nous allons tous bien, merci.

Is this correct?

Est-ce correct?

It is because we are asking about  everyone's health or mood in general.

C'est parce que nous posons des questions sur la santé ou l'humeur de chacun en général.

And therefore, here we can use the  adjective 'good'.

Et donc, ici, nous pouvons utiliser l' adjectif "bien".

'We're all good, thanks'.

"Nous allons tous bien, merci".
