So, in today's lesson we're going to clear up the  confusion many of us experience with the words:

The best ones are 'a' and 'b'.

I migliori sono 'a' e 'b'.

'Good thanks' and 'very well thank you'.

"Bene grazie" e "molto bene grazie".

Although you may hear the other two as well sometimes,

'a' and 'b' are the better ones.

Let's see why.

Let's start by looking at when to use 'good'.

Iniziamo osservando quando usare "buono".

'Good' is an adjective and is used to describe  a noun which can be something or someone.

"Buono" è un aggettivo ed è usato per descrivere un sostantivo che può essere qualcosa o qualcuno.

For example:

Ad esempio:

This approach is good. Here, 'good' is describing something,

questo approccio è buono. Qui, "buono" sta descrivendo qualcosa,

an approach.

Or...

Oppure...

Linda is a good employee.

Linda è una brava impiegata.

Here, good is describing someone.

Qui, buono sta descrivendo qualcuno.

So when someone greets you by  saying:

Quindi, quando qualcuno ti saluta dicendo:

Hi, how are you doing?

Ciao, come stai?

Or...

Oppure...

Hello, how are you?

Ciao, come stai?

You can describe your state by using good.

Puoi descrivere il tuo stato utilizzando good.

'I'm good'.

'Sto bene'.

You're describing yourself.

Stai descrivendo te stesso.

'I'

"Io"

You can also say: 'I'm fine',

Puoi anche dire: "Sto bene",

which means you are in good health and or in a good mood.

il che significa che sei in buona salute e/o di buon umore.

Now in informal English, in response to  'how are you doing?' you may sometimes hear:

Ora in inglese informale, in risposta a "come stai?" a volte potresti sentire:

'I'm doing good'.

"Sto bene".

But, because good is not an adverb,

Ma poiché buono non è un avverbio,

This sentence is grammatically incorrect.

questa frase è grammaticalmente errata.

If you want to use 'i'm doing' in your reply,

Se vuoi usare "sto facendo" nella risposta,

it's better to use 'fine'

è meglio usare "fine"

because fine is both an adjective and an adverb.

perché fine è sia un aggettivo che un avverbio.

So, instead of saying 'I'm doing good' say:

Quindi, invece di dire "sto bene", dì:

'I'm doing fine'.

"sto bene".

Okay! Let's look at how to use 'well'.

Va bene! Diamo un'occhiata a come usare 'bene'.

Well is the adverb form of good.

Bene è la forma avverbiale di buono.

As an adverb, it describes an action.

Come avverbio, descrive un'azione.

'This approach works'.

'Questo approccio funziona'.

Works is a verb an action.

Works è un verbo un'azione.

'well'.

'BENE'.

Linda has done her job

Linda ha svolto il suo lavoro

'done' is an action

"fatto" è un'azione

therefore, 'well'.

quindi "bene".

But well is also an adjective which means  not ill or in good health.

Ma bene è anche un aggettivo che significa non malato o in buona salute.

So you can also say:

Quindi puoi anche dire:

'I'm well'.

'Sto bene'.

Here your reply is specifically in the  context of your health rather than your mood.

Qui la tua risposta è specificamente nel contesto della tua salute piuttosto che del tuo umore.

So, when someone greets you by saying:

Quindi, quando qualcuno ti saluta dicendo:

'how are you' or? 'how are you doing?' you can say:

"come stai" o? 'Come va?' puoi dire:

'I'm very well thank you.'

"Sto molto bene, grazie".

Or 'very well, thank you'

O "molto bene, grazie".

But these days the most common answers are:

And if someone asks you specifically about how you're recovering from an illness or succeeding in a task

then you can answer:

'I'm doing well' or 'I'm doing fine.'

"Sto bene" o "Sto bene".

Right! it's time for our final quiz.

I'd like you to decide if there's a mistake  in the sentence, and if there is, correct it.

'how's your son doing at school?'

'He's doing good.'

Is this correct?

No it isn't because we're asking about someone's  performance at school.

No, non è perché chiediamo informazioni sul rendimento scolastico di qualcuno.

So, we shouldn't use the adjective 'good' but the adverb 'well'.

Quindi, non dovremmo usare l'aggettivo 'buono' ma l'avverbio 'bene'.

'How's your son doing at school?'

"Come va tuo figlio a scuola?"

'He's doing well.'

"Sta andando bene."

Number 2:

How's your mum? I heard she was ill.

Come sta tua madre? Ho sentito che era malata.

'She's good again'.

'Sta di nuovo bene'.

Is this correct?

È corretto?

Again, it is not correct.

Di nuovo, non è corretto.

It's incorrect because we are asking about someone's health,

Non è corretto perché stiamo chiedendo informazioni sulla salute di qualcuno

and therefore, we can't use the word 'good'.

e, pertanto, non possiamo usare la parola "buono".

But the adjective 'well'. 'She's well again'.

Ma l'aggettivo 'bene'. 'Sta di nuovo bene'.

And the last one.

E l'ultimo.

'Hi, how are you all doing?'

'Ciao, come state tutti?'

'We're all good, thanks.'

"Stiamo tutti bene, grazie."

Is this correct?

It is because we are asking about  everyone's health or mood in general.

È perché chiediamo informazioni sulla salute o sull'umore di tutti in generale.

And therefore, here we can use the  adjective 'good'.

E quindi, qui possiamo usare l' aggettivo "buono".

'We're all good, thanks'.

'Stiamo tutti bene, grazie'.
