So, in today's lesson we're going to clear up the  confusion many of us experience with the words:

Which of these four answers do you think are the best?

The best ones are 'a' and 'b'.

Los mejores son 'a' y 'b'.

'Good thanks' and 'very well thank you'.

'Bien gracias' y 'muy bien gracias'.

Although you may hear the other two as well sometimes,

Aunque a veces también puede escuchar los otros dos,

'a' and 'b' are the better ones.

'a' y 'b' son los mejores.

Let's see why.

Let's start by looking at when to use 'good'.

Comencemos por ver cuándo usar 'bueno'.

'Good' is an adjective and is used to describe  a noun which can be something or someone.

'Bueno' es un adjetivo y se usa para describir un sustantivo que puede ser algo o alguien.

For example:

Por ejemplo:

This approach is good. Here, 'good' is describing something,

Este enfoque es bueno. Aquí, 'bueno' está describiendo algo,

an approach.

Linda is a good employee.

Here, good is describing someone.

So when someone greets you by  saying:

Hi, how are you doing?

Or...

Hello, how are you?

You can describe your state by using good.

Puedes describir tu estado usando bueno.

'I'm good'.

'Estoy bien'.

You're describing yourself.

Te estás describiendo a ti mismo.

'I'

'I'

You can also say: 'I'm fine',

También puede decir: 'Estoy bien', lo

which means you are in good health and or in a good mood.

que significa que tiene buena salud o está de buen humor.

Now in informal English, in response to  'how are you doing?' you may sometimes hear:

Ahora en inglés informal, en respuesta a '¿cómo estás?' a veces puede escuchar:

'I'm doing good'.

'lo estoy haciendo bien'.

But, because good is not an adverb,

Pero, debido a que bueno no es un adverbio,

This sentence is grammatically incorrect.

If you want to use 'i'm doing' in your reply,

Si quieres usar 'estoy haciendo' en tu respuesta

it's better to use 'fine'

, es mejor usar 'bien'

because fine is both an adjective and an adverb.

So, instead of saying 'I'm doing good' say:

'I'm doing fine'.

'Estoy bien'.

Okay! Let's look at how to use 'well'.

¡Bueno! Veamos cómo usar 'bien'.

Well is the adverb form of good.

Bueno es la forma adverbial de bueno.

As an adverb, it describes an action.

Como adverbio, describe una acción.

'This approach works'.

'Este enfoque funciona'.

Works is a verb an action.

Obras es un verbo una acción.

'well'.

'bien'.

Linda has done her job

Linda ha hecho su trabajo

'done' is an action

'hecho' es una acción

therefore, 'well'.

, por lo tanto, 'bien'.

But well is also an adjective which means  not ill or in good health.

Pero bueno también es un adjetivo que significa no enfermo o con buena salud.

So you can also say:

Entonces también puedes decir:

'I'm well'.

'Estoy bien'.

Here your reply is specifically in the  context of your health rather than your mood.

Aquí su respuesta es específicamente en el contexto de su salud en lugar de su estado de ánimo.

So, when someone greets you by saying:

Entonces, cuando alguien te saluda diciendo:

'how are you' or? 'how are you doing?' you can say:

'cómo estás' o? '¿como estas?' puedes decir:

'I'm very well thank you.'

'Estoy muy bien, gracias'.

Or 'very well, thank you'

O 'muy bien, gracias'.

But these days the most common answers are:

'I'm good thanks.'

'Fine, thank you.'

'Bien, gracias.'

And if someone asks you specifically about how you're recovering from an illness or succeeding in a task

Y si alguien te pregunta específicamente sobre cómo te estás recuperando de una enfermedad o cómo estás teniendo éxito en una tarea,

then you can answer:

'I'm doing well' or 'I'm doing fine.'

Right! it's time for our final quiz.

I'd like you to decide if there's a mistake  in the sentence, and if there is, correct it.

'how's your son doing at school?'

'He's doing good.'

Is this correct?

No it isn't because we're asking about someone's  performance at school.

No, no es porque estemos preguntando sobre el desempeño de alguien en la escuela.

So, we shouldn't use the adjective 'good' but the adverb 'well'.

Entonces, no deberíamos usar el adjetivo 'bien' sino el adverbio 'bien'.

'How's your son doing at school?'

'¿Cómo le va a su hijo en la escuela?'

'He's doing well.'

Lo está haciendo bien.

How's your mum? I heard she was ill.

'She's good again'.

Is this correct?

Again, it is not correct.

It's incorrect because we are asking about someone's health,

and therefore, we can't use the word 'good'.

But the adjective 'well'. 'She's well again'.

And the last one.

'Hi, how are you all doing?'

'We're all good, thanks.'

Is this correct?

It is because we are asking about  everyone's health or mood in general.

Es porque estamos preguntando sobre la salud o el estado de ánimo de todos en general.

And therefore, here we can use the  adjective 'good'.

Y por lo tanto, aquí podemos usar el adjetivo 'bueno'.

'We're all good, thanks'.

'Estamos todos bien, gracias'.
