What's the difference between I am doing something  and I have been doing something?

In this lesson, we're going to review the difference between Present Continuous (I am doing),

En esta lección, vamos a revisar la diferencia entre el Presente Continuo (estoy haciendo)

and, Present Perfect Continuous (I have been doing).

y el Presente Perfecto Continuo (he estado haciendo).

Okay! let's start with Present Continuous (I am doing).

¡Bueno! empecemos con Presente Continuo (estoy haciendo).

We use the Present Continuous tense (I am doing, he is doing they are doing)

Usamos el tiempo presente continuo (yo estoy haciendo, él está haciendo, ellos están haciendo)

for actions in progress or temporary situations.

para acciones en progreso o situaciones temporales.

For example: I'm currently working from home.

Por ejemplo: actualmente estoy trabajando desde casa.

Some common time expressions for this tense are currently, now, at present, at the moment, etc.

Algunas expresiones de tiempo comunes para este tiempo verbal son actualmente, ahora, en la actualidad, en el momento, etc.

So, what about Present Perfect Continuous?

Entonces, ¿qué pasa con el presente perfecto continuo?

We have been doing, she has been doing, etc.

Hemos estado haciendo, ella ha estado haciendo, etc.

We use this tense for an action that started in the past  and continues in the present.

Usamos este tiempo para una acción que comenzó en el pasado y continúa en el presente.

For example:  I've been working from home for one month.

Por ejemplo: He estado trabajando desde casa durante un mes.

Common time expressions for this tense are 'for', which is plus the length of time.

Las expresiones de tiempo comunes para este tiempo son 'for', que es más el tiempo.

'Since', which is plus the start point of the action.

"Since", que es más el punto de inicio de la acción.

And also, expressions like 'all day' or 'this week' etc.

Y también, expresiones como 'todo el día' o 'esta semana', etc.

A common question I get is: Are these two tenses interchangeable?

Una pregunta común que recibo es: ¿Son estos dos tiempos verbales intercambiables?

For example, can we say: I am working from home for one month or since April.

Por ejemplo, podemos decir: estoy trabajando desde casa durante un mes o desde abril.

That is using the Present Continuous with 'for' and 'since'.

Eso es usar el presente continuo con 'for' y 'since'.

No! This is a mistake.

¡No! Esto es un error.

If you use time expressions like 'for', 'since', 'all day', etc.,

Si usa expresiones de tiempo como 'for', 'since', 'all day', etc.

you must use Present Perfect Continuous:

, debe usar Present Perfect Continuous:

I have been working from home for one month or since April.

He estado trabajando desde casa durante un mes o desde abril.

What about the other way around?

¿Qué acerca del otro camino alrededor?

Can we say: I have been working from home?

¿Podemos decir: he estado trabajando desde casa?

So, using Present Perfect Continuous without mentioning how long.

Entonces, usando Present Perfect Continuous sin mencionar cuánto tiempo.

And the answer is...

Y la respuesta es... ¡

Yes you can!

Sí se puede!

If you don't know how long or you don't want to mention it,

Si no sabe cuánto tiempo o no quiere mencionarlo

you can use this tense to indicate that the  action has continued for some time.

, puede usar este tiempo para indicar que la acción ha continuado durante algún tiempo.

If you want, you can add the expressions 'for a while' or 'for some time'. But, you don't have to.

Si quieres, puedes añadir las expresiones 'durante un tiempo' o 'durante algún tiempo'. Pero, no tienes que hacerlo.

You can just say: I have been avoiding coffee.  Or: she has been thinking of quitting her job.

Simplemente puede decir: He estado evitando el café. O: ha estado pensando en dejar su trabajo.

Right! There is one special case I need to mention to you, and that is when we use the Present Perfect Continuous without 'for' or 'since'

¡Derecho! Hay un caso especial que debo mencionarte, y es cuando usamos el presente perfecto continuo sin 'for' o 'since'

for an action that has just finished with an undesirable effect in the present.

para una acción que acaba de terminar con un efecto indeseable en el presente.

For example:  Why are your eyes red? Have you been crying?

Por ejemplo: ¿Por qué tienes los ojos rojos? ¿Has estado llorando?

Or, someone may say: Why are your clothes wet? And the answer can be: I've been washing the car.

O, alguien puede decir: ¿Por qué está mojada tu ropa? Y la respuesta puede ser: he estado lavando el coche.

You're not washing the car anymore. You've just stopped.

Ya no estás lavando el coche. Acabas de parar.

But now the effect is that your clothes are wet.

Pero ahora el efecto es que tu ropa está mojada.

And one last thing. As always, watch out for State Verbs.

Y una última cosa. Como siempre, tenga cuidado con los verbos de estado.

A State Verb describes a mental or emotional state or a fact.

Un Verbo de Estado describe un estado mental o emocional o un hecho.

Make sure you don't put a State Verb in a Continuous tense.

Asegúrate de no poner un verbo de estado en un tiempo continuo.

For example, take the verb 'have'.

Por ejemplo, tome el verbo 'tener'.

'Have' can replace 'eat', which makes it an Action Verb.

'Tener' puede reemplazar 'comer', lo que lo convierte en un verbo de acción.

For example, you can say: I'm having lunch now.  Or: I have been having lunch for 10 minutes.

Por ejemplo, puedes decir: Voy a almorzar ahora. O: He estado almorzando durante 10 minutos.

But the real meaning of 'have' is to own, which is now a State Verb.

Pero el verdadero significado de 'have' es poseer, que ahora es un Verbo de estado.

And now you cannot use a Continuous tense with this verb.

Y ahora no puedes usar un tiempo continuo con este verbo.

You cannot say: I am having a headache.

No se puede decir: me duele la cabeza.

You can only say: I have a headache.

Solo puedes decir: Me duele la cabeza.

And, you cannot say: I have been having a headache all day.

Y no puedes decir: he estado teniendo dolor de cabeza todo el día.

You need to say: I have had a headache all day.

Tienes que decir: He tenido dolor de cabeza todo el día.

Right! Let's finish by putting these two tenses together in a dialogue:

¡Derecho! Terminemos juntando estos dos tiempos en un diálogo:

What are you doing?

¿Qué estás haciendo?

I'm repairing my bicycle.

Estoy reparando mi bicicleta.

How long have you been doing that?

¿Cuánto tiempo has estado haciendo eso?

I've been doing it all morning.

Lo he estado haciendo toda la mañana.

Are you thinking of selling it?

¿Estás pensando en venderlo?

No, I think it's too old to sell.

No, creo que es demasiado viejo para vender.

Notice that in the question, the verb 'think' is an Action Verb.

Observe que en la pregunta, el verbo 'pensar' es un verbo de acción.

It's about are you thinking now of doing this thing.

Se trata de si estás pensando ahora en hacer esto.

Whereas, in the answer 'think' is a State Verb, which means I believe it's my opinion.

Mientras que, en la respuesta, 'pensar' es un verbo de estado, lo que significa que creo que es mi opinión.

And therefore, it's not in the Continuous form. It's in the Simple form.

Y por lo tanto, no está en la forma Continua. Está en la forma Simple.

How long have you owned it?

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que lo tienes?

I've had it for three years.

Lo tengo desde hace tres años.

And now, both the verbs 'have' and 'own' are State Verbs.  So, you do not see the Continuous tense anymore.

Y ahora, tanto los verbos 'tener' como 'poseer' son verbos de estado. Entonces, ya no ves el tiempo continuo.

Right! That's the end of this lesson.
